One of Grand Turk’s main attractions is wall diving, with a 7,000 foot drop
a mere 1/4 mile from shore. It is consistently ranked among the world’s top
scuba-diving destinations. The Columbus Landfall National Park provides
access to rare black coral, giant manta rays, sharks, and dolphins. Grand
Turk also features phenomenal bird watching at each of its abandoned
salt ponds via a walking or driving trail. During whale-watching season
from late December through April, visitors can watch migrating humpback
whales travel across the deep-water Columbus Passage. There is also a stateof-the-art cruise ship center on Grand Turk’s southwestern shore.

Grand Turk is the original home of the Turks & Caicos National Museum.
Located in historic Guinep House, you will find a central exhibit that tells
the story of the Molasses Reef Wreck, the oldest European shipwreck discovered in the Western Hemisphere. The Museum has a natural history
gallery and displays that interpret many historic events. There is also a Salt
Museum that focuses on this most important industry in Grand Turk’s history. Stamp collectors never miss a stop at the Philatelic Bureau, as the
Islands are known for their colorful and unusual issues.

Grand Turk’s other historic sites include the 1852 Lighthouse (built of cast
iron pieces imported from England), St. Thomas’ Anglican Church (consecrated in 1823 and considered the oldest on the island), the former HM
Prison, Oddfellows Lodge, Gun Hill, and South Creek. A most popular
excursion just off Grand Turk is Gibb’s Cay, where visitors can enjoy an
uninhabited island, a picnic on the beach, and a chance to feed the beautiful
stingrays who swim right up to snorkelers.

Cockburn Town (on Grand Turk) is the nation’s Capital, where most government offices are headquartered. On Guanahani Beach, Christopher
Columbus first made landfall on his voyage to the New World in 1492.
Almost 500 years later, U.S. astronaut John Glenn splashed down in the sea
here after he became the first American to orbit the earth.

In Cockburn Town, Duke, Queen, and Front Streets are lined with timeless
18th and 19th century landmarks that reflect the Bermudian-style architecture of the Salt Raking Era. Two of these buildings are now inns and others
include government offices, the public library, churches, private residences,
and fraternities. Outside of town is the Governor’s residence at Waterloo.
