Community Event Supports IU Health Olcott Center
On Saturday, September 26, more than 5,000 walkers, runners, survivors and volunteers will walk, run, stroll
and strut throughout IU’s beautiful campus for the 16th Hoosiers Outrun Cancer.
This fantastic fall race – once again voted the #1 local road race – benefits the Indiana University Health Olcott
Center. The Center provides our community with information on cancer prevention, early detection, diagnosis
and treatment – all free of charge thanks in large part to Hoosiers Outrun Cancer and the amazing runners,
walkers, volunteers and local businesses who support the race.
The IU Health Olcott Center’s comprehensive – and free – services provide comfort, support and education to
cancer patients, their caregivers and loved ones throughout our community. Cancer screenings, health fairs,
classes and sunscreen distribution also occur annually. Altogether, the Olcott Center touches more than 13,000
people every year, and Hoosiers Outrun Cancer is their primary funding source.
“Hoosiers Outrun Cancer helps send a message that we as a community are behind the people who regrettably
have to go through cancer treatment,” said Jon Barada, Bloomington Hospital Foundation President. “It
provides an opportunity for people to express their compassion for such a great cause.”
Year in and year out, Hoosiers Outrun Cancer also offers the opportunity for businesses to show their support.
For 2015, the Foundation rolled out new sponsorship opportunities to help local companies demonstrate their
commitment to the IU Health Olcott Center through Hoosiers Outrun Cancer:
 Start Line Sponsor – exclusive designation as the Start Line Sponsor includes a company name/logo on the Start Line banner
 Finish Line Sponsor – much like the Start Line Sponsor, this exclusive opportunity includes name/logo recognition on the Finish Line banner
 Kids’ Zone Sponsor – exclusive sponsorship of the always-fun Kids’ Zone
 Overpass Sponsor – this sponsorship gives businesses the exclusive rights to decorate the Overpass at 13th and Indiana
 Zig Zag Sponsor – the course takes a zig and then a zag around mile one, giving the Zig Zag Sponsor the exclusive opportunity to decorate the area
 Water Station Sponsors – there are two water breaks on the course and thus two sponsorship opportunities at the Water Stations
 HOC Partners – this giving level offers a way for many businesses to show their support.
RE/MAX came on board to support Hoosiers Outrun Cancer and jumped at the chance to become the Overpass
Sponsor for 2015.

“We enjoy the visibility that the well-known RE/MAX Balloon has and we thought the
Overpass would be a great place to have such a large presence,” said RE/MAX broker Tracee
Lutes. “It shows the community that we are out there supporting a wonderful local resource.”

“We like the fact that the money stays in our community to help so many people,” added
RE/MAX broker Andy Walker. “We have had several agents in our office who have family
members affected by cancer. The fact that the Olcott services are offered free of charge is
something our community should be extremely proud of. We’re taking care of our own.”
Tenth & College/10 Salon & Spa is another key sponsor. They have supported Hoosiers
Outrun Cancer in the past but decided to become the Start Line Sponsor this year. “It’s
almost impossible to find someone who has not been touched by cancer,” explained spa
owner Elliot Lewis. “HOC is an awesome way to come together as a community and connect
with people who have been touched by cancer, either personally or through a friend, family
member, spouse or loved one. The Start Line Sponsorship seemed like a great way to show
our support and encourage the participants.”
“The Foundation is grateful to our business sponsors – old and new,” said Barada. “We could
not have raised an astounding $2.5 million without their generous support over the years.”

But Hoosiers Outrun Cancer is about much more than sponsorships. It’s about people:
walkers, runners, survivors, families, volunteers, those remembering lost loved ones and
those honoring current cancer battlers.
“The event isn’t only about giving something to a great cause, it is also a chance to
hear others’ stories and share experiences with people,” explained Angela Parker,
Committee Chair of this year’s Hoosiers Outrun Cancer. “If you’ve not been to Hoosiers
Outrun Cancer or if you’re on the fence, give it a try. If you experience it just once, you’ll
be back year after year.”
Hoosiers Outrun Cancer offers something for everyone: a 5K race, a 5K walk, a 1-mile
family walk and a 1-mile kids’ run. Plus there are many fun pre-race and post-race
activities planned for both adults and children. There will also be a survivors gathering and
celebration. People can even be a part of the fun without the run by being a Spirit Runner!

Bloomington Hospital Foundation
Alzheimer’s
Resource Service
2015 Expansion and Outreach Initiative
In the United States, someone develops Alzheimer’s every 67 seconds. It is a
devastating disease affecting not just the patient, but those who love the patient
most.
IU Health Bloomington Hospital Alzheimer’s Resource Service serves these family
members, along with professional caregivers, who live or work with patients with
Alzheimer’s disease. Care for the caregiver is a primary mission of the center, along
with serving as a resource for those seeking or managing a diagnosis. Education,
support, and resources are offered at no charge.
The demands of providing care are extremely hard on family caregivers with
approximately one third of all caregivers dying before the person they are supporting
does. Caregivers often neglect their own physical and emotional needs while focusing
instead on their loved one.
The 2015 Expansion and Outreach Initiative will help
provide caregivers with an understanding of the disease and its effects on their life, as
well as tools and support for addressing the disease’s many challenges. Please join
the Bloomington Hospital Foundation as we offer support to the Alzheimer’s Resource
Service through the 2015 Expansion and Outreach Initiative.
Your support of the Alzheimer’s Resource
Service through the 2015 Expansion and
Outreach Initiative will help provide:
■
Annual Alzheimer’s Symposium featuring a national speaker and local
experts to provide education and awareness in our community
■
“Caregiver University” classes in rural communities on topics such as
home safety, legal issues in caregiving, end-of-life care, and available
resources for support
■
Telemedicine Equipment for six satellite locations
■
Interactive Training Area to educate patients and caregivers on how to
use safety and adaptive equipment in common home areas
■
Transportation Vouchers to and from Alzheimer’s Resource Service
group meetings and activities
■
Respite Care so caregivers may attend Alzheimer’s Resource Service
support groups and classes

Briefly Speaking
Planned Giving Corner
A Message from Planned Giving
Committee Member Tony Stonger
Americans are pretty generous – in fact, 83 percent of us donated
money to charitable organizations last year, according to a Gallup
survey. A key motivation for making charitable gifts, of course,
is to help those organizations whose work is meaningful to you.
However, by supporting these groups, you can also make life less
“taxing” for yourself.
Save the Date!
The Foundation’s Annual Holiday Gala will be held on Saturday, December 5,
2015. Mark your calendar and save the date for this fun-filled evening
supporting the IU Health Bloomington Hospital Alzheimer’s Resource Service.
100 Men Who Cook Sizzled in May!
In May, a sold-out crowd gathered for 100 Men Who Cook – an event
featuring local “chefs” whipping up their best dishes for a good cause.
Hosted by Old National Bank in partnership with the Bloomington Hospital
Foundation, the 2015 100 Men Who Cook supported Get Onboard Active
Living, or G.O.A.L. – a free, family-focused, community approach to
decreasing childhood obesity.
Specifically, by making charitable contributions, you may be able
to receive some valuable tax breaks. To claim a deduction, though,
you need to itemize your taxes, and you need to make sure that the
organization you’re supporting is qualified, from a tax-deductibility
standpoint.
You are not confined to making cash gifts. In fact, if you donate
certain types of noncash assets, you may be able to increase your
tax benefits.
If you want to take a longer-term approach to charitable giving,
while incorporating your gifts in planning for your estate, you
might want to consider establishing a charitable remainder trust.
Under this arrangement, you’d place some assets, such as stocks
or real estate, into a trust, which could then use these assets to
pay you a lifetime income stream. When you establish the trust,
you may be able to receive an immediate tax deduction based
on the charitable group’s “remainder interest” – the amount the
charity is likely to ultimately receive. (This figure is determined by
an IRS formula.) Upon your death, the trust would relinquish the
remaining assets to the charitable organization you’ve named.
This type of trust can be complex, so to create one, you’ll need to
work with your tax and legal advisors.
While the tax benefits associated with charitable giving are
significant, they should not, ultimately, drive your gifting decisions.
You should also consider the effect your gift will have on the
other areas of your estate considerations – so make sure you
communicate your plans to your family members.
In any case, though, be as generous as you can today and in the
years to come. Your generosity will be a rewarding experience –
for everyone.
