Why St. Mark’s?

Why would your neighbor who has never been
to any church wake up one Sunday and come
to your church?
That was a question Fr. Timothy Dombek asked me
during the last General Convention in Salt Lake City,
Utah. He caught me off guard and I do not think
I gave him anything close to whetting his
excitement. Now that you have time to
think about it, I would like to pose it to
you, why would your neighbor who has
never been to church wake up one Sunday
and come to St. Mark’s Cathedral?
While we may take it for granted that we meet
here every Sunday, your neighbor may not think
that way. I think it is a genuine question whose
answer must be on our fingertips. What makes
you energized to come to St. Mark’s?
What are the top three things you
would say St. Mark’s is known for in the
community (besides the kindness and
goodness of the people)? I think if we
are proud of what we have and what we
are known for, we would be proud to share
it. You would be amazed by the ignorance out
there about what happens on this campus. I
am surprised by the majority of the members
who are not aware of all the activities that
happen here. If this is our home away from
home it is our responsibility to know what goes
on in and around it.
Here is what I suggest we need to do. First
of all we need to be faithful in reading our
newsletters, The Evangelist* and The Messenger. A lot of effort is
put into them just to keep you updated and informed about the
activities and ministries offered at St. Mark’s.
Second, many of you are on social media; take some pictures and share with your
group about what excited you in worship today. I encourage you to leave out the
negative part of it for now.

Third, make use of the Order of Service bulletin as a tool for
evangelism. I am aware some of us are scared to share our faith.
There is a better way to do it when you go out for lunch after church.
Ask the waiter or the neighbor if she or he has been to church. And
as they struggle with the right excuse, hand them the bulletin for the
Sunday Service and invite them to come and see for themselves.
That means, you need to have your bulletin handy. You would be
surprised about the number of people who have been reached by
Christ through the Sunday bulletin. It is too wonderful a tool to be
left behind for recycle.
So, why St. Mark’s? It is because we are here “to love and serve
Christ, to love and serve one another in Christ, to love and serve
the world for Christ.” That is our mission statement. It is a great
definitive statement of what is being done here and it is our
responsibility to interpret it in the eyes of the world. Our goal is not
so much about filling this place, but rather to be witnesses for Christ
in the world. If you can refer a friend to a bible or book study class at
St. Mark’s you would have served Christ. If you can celebrate some
joys from St. Mark’s on your social media, you would have served
another in Christ. If somebody can read a portion of scripture from
the bulletin you gave out, you would have served the world for
Christ. Let us do the sowing of the seed and leave the germination
to God. This is something to think about.

Music News
RSCM Music Camp 2016
Mark your calendars now for St Mark’s Annual
RSCM Music Camp which will be held June 2024 from 9am –noon. The camp will culminate
with camp participants leading the 10:30am
Eucharist on Sunday, June 26. The camp for
children in grades 1 – 9 is free and open to the
public. Registration information will be listed
in the May issue of the Evangelist. If you have
any questions or desire additional information,

Evensong
St. Mark’s services of Choral Evensong will
resume on April 3 at 5:15pm. If you have not
attended one of these beautiful services, please
come and experience the incredible work that
has been done this year by the St. Mark’s Boys
and Girls Choir. This talented group of young
singers has fully grasped the 500-year old
musical tradition of the Anglican Church and
they deserve our support.
Our final Choral Evensongs until the Fall will be

Durufle Requiem
The St. Mark’s Choirs will present Requiem by
Maurice Durufle (1902-1986) on Sunday, April
24, 2016 at 4:00pm. This magnificent work is
unique in the fact that it is entirely based upon
Gregorian Chant. Although the music swims
in luxuriant harmonies that combine elements
used by composers such as Debussy, Fauré,
and Messiaen, all of its melodies are based
exclusively on themes from the Gregorian
funeral mass. Sometimes the chants are used
in their original form, leaving the orchestra to
support or comment, in other passages the
chant serves merely as a stimulus.
The Requiem will be accompanied by St. Mark’s
Assistant Organist, Dr. Joseph Henry. The St.
Mark’s organ, with its vast array of tonal colors
and resources is perfectly suited for this work.
The performance will be under the direction
of Bryan T. Mitnaul, St. Mark’s Canon for
Cathedral Music.
The concert is free and open to the public.

Our Road to Emmaus by Chaplain Kane
As the church now lives into a new season of Easter joy, announcing to the world that our Savior Jesus Christ the Lord
is risen, I am increasingly aware of how the Spirit is present
in our midst as we serve of the poor, the elderly, the hopeless and the needy. We are witnesses to Jesus’ resurrection
if, as the disciples on the road to Emmaus, we have our
eyes open and our hearts ready to be caught up in the power of the Spirit moving through our small and humble efforts. These simple gestures of ordinary
offering become an occasion of God’s holy grace. Then we need only to share
the Good News with others as our students, “disciples-in-training,” have recently walked the Way. “As they talked and discussed these things with each other,
Jesus himself came up and walked along with them.” Luke 24:14
Our Fellowship of Christian Athletes shared the light of faith, preparing lunch
bags and care packages for the urban poor at Holy Cross Hope House. Following those events, the Service Leadership Club (SLC) made visitation to the
Veterans home and shared Easter greetings. SLC also donated fruit for Friendship House and Easter baskets for children at University Health pediatric ward
and Shriner’s Hospital. “They were talking with each other about everything that
had happened.” Luke 24:3
Our students and their families served Sunday suppers at Providence House
and served at the Highland blessing dinners. Saturday mornings they staffed
Noel Food Pantry, and worked after school at the Highland Clothes Closet.
They also provided an Eastertide party and Mardi Gras party for the children
at Shriners. Jesus asked them, “What are you discussing together as you walk
along?” Luke 24:17
In Advent, each grade researched and sponsored a different charity including purchasing llamas and milk for Heifer International projects, food for the
Northwest Louisiana Food Bank, books for the Gingerbread House, supplies
for Shriner’s Child Life department, books for Magnolia Charter School, cleaning supplies for Providence House, bicycles for the Community Outreach
Program, and a party for the special needs children of Creswell School. “For
the manifestation of the Spirit is given to each one for the profit of all.” 1 Corinthians 12:7
Our Parade of Hope, designed and coordinated by 7th Grade Christian Ed
students, yielded a Lenten harvest of socks for the Bishop’s socks distribution
for the homeless foot washing on Maundy Thursday, a coin collection for the
Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, board games for the Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (CADA), bar soaps for the Memphis Ronald McDonald
House, sponsorship of an international child for 3 months toward food, clothing and education, funds for “Blue Forever” to provide lifesaving devices for
local police wounded in the line of duty, research money for a child with the
rare Batten Disease, and dollars to support Puppies Behind Bars, a program in
which abandoned animals in shelters can be trained by prisoners as a Service
Dog for military personnel wounded or dealing with PTSD.
How true it is that the risen Lord continues to reveal the power of his presence
to those who are open to the revelation as we journey to the many places of
woundedness and need. We offer our simple gifts, our ordinary kindnesses,
and our humble selves in love and service of others. Here at St. Mark’s Cathedral School, we are blessed to make the journey of Emmaus all throughout the
year; proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ throughout the world. “It is
true! The Lord has risen!” Luke 24:34
May you also be blessed with the manifestation of the Lord as we share the
journey home.

Remembrance Service

down to the library for Children’s Chapel.
For the thirty-third year, the Shreveport and Bossier
communities will come together in prayer, memory, and
hope for our annual Holocaust Remembrance Service.
Each year a different house of worship hosts the event, and
this year it will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday, May 1 at St. Mary of
the Pines, 1050 W Bert Kouns Industrial Loop, Shreveport,
LA 71118. The Very Rev. Rothell Price is Vicar General for
the Catholic Diocese of Shreveport and the Chair of the
remembrance service this year.
Nursery: Newborn to K3 (3 years old by Sept. 31st). 9:15 –
12:30 (2nd floor church office building adjacent to Parish Hall)
Communion Celebration (first communion): for 1st and 2nd
graders will be Sunday, April 10th. The class will be held on
April 9th in the morning.
Our special guest speaker will be Joe Rosenbaum, one of
‘the Tehran Children.’ During the rise of Hitler, Joe, his
mother, and younger sister suffered for several years in
Siberian labor camps. The deportees were freed along
with the Polish army. Sent southward to Tashkent, they
eventually were moved to Tehran. The Jewish Agency
negotiated the children’s evacuation (now numbering over
900) to Palestine, by ship and then by train across the Sinai
desert, arriving at Atlit detainee camp on February 18, 1943.
Over 100 essays and poems from local middle and
high school students, and research papers from college
students were submitted for our Holocaust Literature
contest. Awards will be presented to the winners, and to
participating teachers.
