Watch EWHS, LHS, MHS, MTHS football games live on the Internet
Edmonds School District alumni who want to watch their favorite high school football team in action,
but can’t attend in person, are in luck. The Sound Live Sports Network broadcasts every home football game,
live from Edmonds District Stadium, every Friday night via your computer, tablet or smart phone. All games
are also archived for later viewing.
The games are presented in partnership with the broadcast and journalism programs at MTHS and the
My Neighborhood News network of online community news sites: Lynnwood Today.com, MLTnews.com and
MyEdmondsNews.com. MTHS students gain valuable experience working on the technical side of each
broadcast, under the direction of teachers Angelo Comeaux and Vince DeMiero. Veteran high school sports
broadcasters Steve Willits, himself an MTHS alumnus, and Keith Nealey, father to an EWHS alumnus and
two current Edmonds-Woodway students, provide play-by-play for the broadcasts. The Sound Live Sports
Network will also follow all games for any teams reaching the postseason.
This football season’s pre-game show is presented by Dewar, Meeks & Ekrem and the player of the
game award is sponsored by Jersey Mike’s of Lynnwood. Other sponsors include Shoreline Community College, Action Jackson Plumbing, Sorelli Pizza in Mountlake Terrace and Burger King Edmonds. The halftime show sponsor is Edmonds Community College..
And remember that even if you do attend a game, you can watch the play by play on your phone.
The Sound Live Sports Network also plans to follow local teams during winter and spring sports seasons, including basketball, baseball and softball.

Bruce and Jo Caldwell and their
adventures with life and music
Bruce and Jo Caldwell have been working since they
retired - Bruce from Edmonds-Woodway in 1995, and Jo from
Meadowdale in 1997. It’s not been all work, however. In those
years they have also managed to enjoy many good times.
Bruce and Jo met in the UW Husky Marching Band and honeymooned with the band on the Huskies’ 1964 Rose Bowl trip.
Bruce began his career teaching music at Madrona Junior High
then moved to Woodway High when it opened in 1967. Jo
taught in Northshore then stayed home while their children
were young. When she was ready to return to work, teaching
jobs were scarce; only non-continuing contracts were offered.
She taught sixth grade at Martha Lake, (which closed at the end
of the year), then at Forest Crest (which closed at the end of that
year), then second grade at Sherwood. Because of double-levy failures, there were no jobs in Edmonds, so Jo
commuted to Auburn for two years and Snohomish for six years. Finally in 1984, she returned to Edmonds,
teaching (mostly) English and advising the yearbook at Meadowdale High School.
In 1995 the Washington Music Educators Association (WMEA) decided to pilot a paid position for someone
to manage the association. Bruce, a former WMEA president, was hired. At the same time, the association was
searching for a new editor for its publications, and Jo, with her yearbook-adviser experience, was hired. The
room above the garage in the Caldwells’ home became the WMEA office. The two-year pilot project is now in
its 19th year and employs a staff of five in addition to the Caldwells. In June 2009, the office moved into space
in the EEA building.
As WMEA’s executive director, Bruce supervises day-to-day operations of the association and manages an annual conference for music educators – a state conference in even-numbered years and a conference for
the six states in the Northwest Division of the National Association for Music Education (NAfME) in oddnumbered years. Jo does all the publications for the organization and its events. For 11 years she also served as
editor of The Journal for the Washington State School Retirees’ Association.
The retirement jobs have been wonderful in two ways: allowing the Caldwells to keep in touch with many of
their former colleagues and providing them the opportunity to travel. Each year they attend a summer workshop at NAfME headquarters near “the other Washington.” Especially fun was a year ago when one of their
granddaughters joined them after the meetings for a week of sightseeing in the nation’s capital.
Loyal Husky fans, the Caldwells tailgate in their motorhome at each home game, travel to some away games
and attend Dawg Days in the Desert in the Palm Springs area in March. Other motorhome travels include a
couple of trips each year to California and Arizona, where they visit their son, Steve, in Flagstaff, and at least
two trips to Ashland for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
Since 1997, the Caldwells have traveled to Europe nine times and have been on several cruises. They have especially enjoyed trips with other friends who are retired teachers. To celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary
in December, the Caldwells are looking forward to a trip to Europe with their children and grandchildren.
Each fall the Alumni Association awards the Wesley-Birkett Smith Ski School Memorial Scholarship in
memory of Wesley, a Meadowdale Middle School student. Because of Wesley’s love of snow sports, his parents created this
award. Seventh and eighth grade students in the Edmonds School District who are participating in the Edmonds Shoreline Snowsports division of Olympic Ski School may apply for this scholarship. It includes transportation, snowboard or ski lessons, and lift
ticket expenses.
Applications for the scholarship will be in middle schools and are due on November 22nd. The applications will be available in
middle school counselor’s offices, in the main office in K-8 schools, or on the ESDAA website website: www.eddalumni.org

Please renew your membership
It’s again time to ask you for your yearly membership contribution.
As you are receiving this by e-mail, please clip out the renewal form and
mail to the posted address. College costs are rising. Many students are being priced out of the college market. Please consider giving as much as you
can. Because of the high costs, we try and make the minimum scholarship
at $1000. Any amount will help, and we thank you sincerely for your effort
to help deserving Edmonds District students.
