About Our BBQ Competition
Our BBQ Contest is a competitive event that
is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque
Society and run by local KCBS representatives.
The contest is judged by KCBS certified BBQ
judges. Contestants pay a fee to enter the
contest, and compete for cash prizes which
are awarded based on voting by the certified judges.
The highest scoring team is awarded the Grand
Champion prize, and because the contest has been
designated as a “State Championship” contest, the
winner is invited to compete at the American Royal
Invitational Cook-off in Kansas City the following year.
Most teams arrive on Friday night to set up camp and
begin the food preparation process. KCBS reps run the
contest in accordance with strict sanctioning rules,
which specify the type of meats cooked for presentation,
type of fuel used, when preparation begins, and even
garnishes used at presentation time. On Saturday, after
the meat inspection, teams spend most of the day
prepping their ribs, beef brisket, pork butt, and chicken
for the slow overnight cooking process that produces all
that great smelling and tasting food. Unfortunately,
because of MA regulations, contestants are not allowed
to sell food to the public from their sites. However, in
addition to being a serious cooking competition, this is a
social event! The BBQ folks are passionate about their
cooking and also a very friendly bunch, so plan to spend
time down in the camp and you’ll be sure to make some
new friends, learn a lot about BBQ, and have some fun.

daughter Kati & youngest son Mikey compete
about 8 times a year. Sharon & Kati love the

past July. The Riverside Blues & Brews Festival holds a very
special part in their bbq hearts.. They were here in October
2011, for the inaugural bbq competition, after the hurricane
flooded out the riverside venue and have been here every year
since, so it was extra special in 2013, when they received their
very first Grand Championship in the NEBS Grilling Contest.
They've met some of their closest BBQ friends at this venue & look
forward to their 5th year of FUN in 2015!
General Joe's BBQ consists of Jerry Kahil,
Tom Kahil, Darby Greco, Ryan Haar and Pat
Stevens. Based in the Albany, NY area,
General Joe's has been competing in KCBS
events since 2011. Some minor successes in
Troy, Syracuse and Rochester have been achieved. The team is
proud of its streak of no health department violations and is
particularly fond of Willie Nelson and other American traditions
such as baseball, mass-produced light beer and backyard BBQ."

Neil, Jim, and Mike. Yes, you counted right- there are only three
of them. They started their smoking team with 4, but after one
