Nepal Experience 2012
On Sat 21st July a group of Baines 6th Form students will be departing on an
exciting journey to Nepal. We will be joined by a party of students from St Mary's
High School for a two week adventure. Mr Raeburn and Mrs Kimber will be
leading the group together with the St Mary's staff including former Baines RE
teacher Mr Mannino.
The group will be visiting the sights of Kathmandu and they will be given a taste of
the Hindu and Buddhist cultures which shape this unique country.
The main purpose of the visit will be to take part in a teaching project at
Shubhakamana Academy in the Kathmandu valley. Our students will be delivering
lessons designed to build English language skills which are so important for future
education in Nepal.
Shubhakamana Academy is a school which educates village children aged
between 3 to 16 years old. Many of the local families are very poor and a number
of the children are orphans. Some children show symptoms of malnutrition. Nepal
is the 14th poorest country in the world and the poorest country outside of Africa.
Our group have been busy fundraising for the teaching project and on Friday 25 th
May a very successful fundraiser was held at the Breck Club in Poulton which
raised nearly £500. Our thanks to the Rotarians for their support of this event
and for much else besides. The students have been imaginative in their efforts to
raise money for this trip. The recent "Step up for Nepal" day was well supported in
school and an evening of Zumba (a kind of energetic form of exercise en vogue
amongst young persons) was very popular.
When the teaching project is completed the students will have a chance to enjoy a
very different experience of Nepal. We will journey to the Chitwan national park
and spend 3 nights in the sub tropical jungle district. We will ride elephants on
safari. We will see wild rhino, crocodiles, sloth bears, leopard and perhaps even
tiger. We will of course need to be extremely lucky to catch a glimpse of some of
these extremely rare species.
This promises to be a trip of a lifetime for our young people. When we return there
will be a further article on this website describing our adventures and some
pictures to give you a flavour of some of the things the students were involved in.

ILC News
Pupils can now chill out in the ILC thanks to the generous support of the Friends of Baines, the Former
Pupils Association, Silverdells of Kirkham, pupils and parents. Our aim was to raise £5,000 to provide
comfy seating to encourage reading and achieving this has enabled us to buy sofas and colourful
stools to enhance the new ILC.
ANDREW HAMMOND
In March, the author Andrew Hammond visited Baines to talk to Year 9 pupils and visiting pupils from
Fleetwood High School about his new book “Traitor’s Revenge”, second in the Crypt series.
“Andrew’s views on the paranormal struck me as genuine and the way he talked about past
experiences was very interesting. I have never really believed in ghosts myself because, of course, we
are all told endlessly that monsters DO NOT exist! I wonder what Andrew tells his children about
ghosts.”
“Andrew spoke to us as if we all shared his views and knew precisely what he was talking about. I’m
sure many people in the room could not explain a lot of the items of technology that he listed, but he
spoke to us in a way which made us feel involved. I think by speaking in that way he made us want to
read the CRYPT books, perhaps to find out what it was he was really going on about! He did not say
much about the characters in the books, so I guess I’ll just have to read them to find out! “
“Andrew has definitely convinced me that ghosts just might be real and also to read the CRYPT series.
He has inspired me to give writing in the horror genre a whirl. He claimed that writing about the things
you fear makes for superb reading. So I might attempt writing a novel based on spiders... I thoroughly
enjoyed the visit and have been mightily persuaded to start reading Andrew Hammond’s books!”
Georgina Malone
“I really enjoyed the visit from Mr Hammond, it was factual and humorous. The stories were based on
memories from his childhood. He started by asking the rhetorical question “do you believe in ghosts?”
The ghost at the start of “The Gallows Curse, was what he imagined he looked like after he fell down
the stairs at Kings Cross Station when he was a child. He told us that he grew up in a tall narrow
house, supposedly haunted by the old butler, from Victorian times. Also he and his brothers used to
slide down the banister on the stair case which was similar to a picture that he showed us in his
PowerPoint presentation. In this picture the ray of light down the middle of the staircase looked like a
figure. He then went on to say that some adults could not see the figure but most teenagers could, and
if you could you should think about joining CRYPT, Covert Response Youth Paranormal Team.”

ILC News
A few weeks ago Andy Robb visited
Baines School to introduce his new and
first ever published book, ‘Geekhood:
Close Encounters of the Girl Kind'
“A deliciously tender story that wittily
captures the ecstasy and agony of being a
teenager” says Julia Eccleshare,
Lovereading4kids.
This book has an amazing start to it.
Andy is funny, kind and wasn’t scared to
tell us personal stories about himself
when he was just 13 year of age. It may
have been hard for him to come to Baines
and speak to the whole of Year 7 and he
admitted that he was nervous. He told us
a bit about his acting career. You may
have noticed him in “The Woman in Black”
and “Coronation Street”. He is a friendly,
funny chap and I would recommend you
buy his book!” Gabrielle Stephenson
FUTURE EVENTS
“Andy Robb´s visit was very entertaining.
He was intelligent and made us all laugh.
He told us how his book was based on
himself and a beautiful girl named
Catherine who he liked when he was 13. I
found it fascinating.” Zoe Zampini
PUPIL LIBRARIAN CONFERENCE 20th June

Manor” to pupils from Carr Head, Poulton C.E. and Singleton primary
schools.
LAUREN KATE 17th July

Coast to Coast
From Friday June 29th to Sunday July 1st 2012, a group of Year 12 students from Baines School will
follow in the tyre tracks of many others before them who have ridden from Bridlington to Blackpool,
covering 160 miles, to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. This will be our latest and largest
bikeathon which now comprises 40 students compared to the original ride in 2000 which had just 15
cyclists.
We ride in memory of two brave former students, Lewis Crookall and Fraser Olufojude who, with the
support of Christie Hospital, battled with cancer. The first ride in 2000 was led by Mrs Robinson and Mr
Cotterall and included friends of Fraser who wished to raise money in memory of their friend as a
lasting memorial that we continue with each year.
The Teenage Cancer Trust now work with Christie’s and continue to support young people who are
fighting cancer by providing inspiring treatment environments and personal support that is more
appropriate than that which can be offered by the NHS.
We can't think of a more fitting way to remember two special individuals and hope that you can support
us in our pursuit of raising another £10,000 for a very special charity!

Friday June 15th 2012 is BLUE DAY!!!
Supporting MNDA – Motor Neurone Disease Association
A family who recently lost a close family member to Motor Neurone Disease approached school
to ask if we could support a fund-raising event in school in the month of June which has been
launched by MNDA as “a month for optimism”. From this request a group of pupils have
organised a “blue” day on Friday 15th June. All monies raised will go directly to the association
and will be added to the amount raised by 2 parents who are completing the London to Paris
Cycle Challenge on June 22nd for which everyone at Baines wishes them the very best of luck!!!
Should you wish to make a donation you can do so through: Virginmoneygiving.com/claireegan
All donations will be gratefully received.

Welcome to the new fortnightly ‘Life @ Baines’ newsletter. It is the school's
opportunity to share with you the parents and carers, the full and rich array of
activities that our pupils engage in during their time at Baines. We hope that by
providing you with a fuller, more regular picture of life at the school, we can encourage
even more involvement from you the parents, carers and families who support your
children's education at Baines.
Hopefully the newsletter will speak for itself, we hope you enjoy this edition and
please feel free to suggest things that you might like to be included in future editions.
