FROM THE...
CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
Dear Friends and Fellow Chamber Members,
Happy New Year! I hope everyone had
a great holiday visiting with your family and
friends. I sure got in the holiday spirit when we
got a taste of winter with a couple of inches of
snow on the ground in early December.
During the month of December, we had a
couple of great opportunities for our Clear Lake
Area Chamber members and community to get
into the holiday spirit. I hope all of you went to
our Christmas Boat Lane Parade on December
13th. We had over 40 boats participate this year
CATHY TURNER
and had some good parade watchin’ weather
Houston Chronicle
to go with it. I am so grateful that we had such
a hard working committee led by Jim Christiansen from Lockheed Martin.
With the help of the committee, the cities, the Coast Guard and of course
our sponsors, this boat parade was just what our community needed to
show that Clear Lake is back on track after the storm!
If the boat lane parade didn’t get you in the holiday spirit then surely
our Holiday luncheon did! The Bay Area Chorus serenaded the crowd
at Lakewood Yacht Club with great holiday music that had the crowd
singing along.
Have you made your New Year’s resolution yet? I hope one of your
resolutions is to get more involved with our chamber. Your chamber
membership can only be effective if you get involved. Join a committee,
go to a luncheon, check out our monthly business development meetings
or come to an after hours mixer. If you’re not sure where to start, talk to
Cindy or one of her staff. They will help you. Let the chamber help you
make this a prosperous 2009 by getting involved and making the most of
your chamber membership!
Sincerely,
PAGE 11

Chairman of the Board
H
appy New Year! Now is
the time to start fresh,
make those New Year’s
resolutions and set some
goals for the upcoming
year. One very important goal for
your business should include your
involvement in the Chamber. Did you
know that The Best Companies join
Chambers of Commerce?
According to a recent study by the
American Chamber of Commerce
Executives, a professional association
for Chambers of Commerce, it was
determined that the best places to
work belong to their local chamber.
Of Fortune Magazine’s top 100 Best
Companies to work for, 94 are all
members of their local Chamber
of Commerce including the top 24.
Businesses that tend to care about
their employees tend to care about
their community so they invest in both.
Just by joining the Chamber you have
made a wise investment for yourself,
your employees, your company and
your community. Now I hope you
will get involved, because YOU our
members keep us moving forward
and give us the credibility to continue
to be a strong voice in the Clear Lake
Area.
There are so many opportunities
for involvement in the Chamber
please call me or any member of
the Chamber staff at 281-488-7676 or
e-mail [email protected] to
see how you can get involved.
As many of you know we are
renovating the Chamber building
and still under construction, but we
made a lot of progress during the
month of December. Your Board of
Directors has a vision for our Chamber
and wants our building to reflect
that vision. Many of our Chamber
members have generously donated
products, services or just plain cash
to help that vision become a reality.
I want to thank our current “Partners
for Progress”:
AMOCO Federal Credit Union –
Sponsoring a new lighted sign for the
front of the Chamber.
ARI Construction – Donating
some of their services in making the
renovations.
Brinkmann Roofing – Discounting
materials to update the exterior of the
building.
a message from
the President
& CEO
CINDY HARRELD
Cokinos, Bosien & Young and DRDA,
PC CPA’s - Donated cash to make
some much needed repairs.
Lynn’s Landscaping – Donating
all new landscaping and exterior
lighting.
My Flooring America – Completely
renovating the Board Room which will
now be known as the “My Flooring
America” Board Room.
There are still opportunities for your
company to be one of our “Partners
for Progress”. Please contact me for
more information about the program.
In November we lost a long time
chamber member, our third Chairman
of the Board and our very good friend
Bob Chuoke. To honor his legacy in
our organization we will rename our
small conference room the Robert C.
Chuoke Conference Room. We will
make this dedication at our “reveal
party” in the spring. Thank you Bob
for your leadership and support of our
Chamber, you will be missed!
The Chamber will celebrate our
50th year in 2012 and we are finalizing
the development of a 5 year strategic
plan we call Chamber 2012. The
Chamber 2012 committee lead by
Joe Mayer with Lockheed Martin and
Jane Sweeney with Minuteman Press
has worked hard all year to develop
this plan by holding meetings with
key organizations such as Bay Area
Houston
Economic
Partnership,
BayTran, Bay Area Houston Convention
and Visitors Bureau, Clear Creek
Independent School District, University
of Houston Clear Lake and the Gulf
Coast Yacht Brokerages Association.
We also enlisted your comments
and
suggestions
through
focus group meetings
with
the
following business industries: Financial,
Real Estate, Small Business, Marine,
Tourism, Health Care, Aerospace
and Education. Finally we held a
leadership forum in October with our
current Board of Directors and Division
and Committee Chairmen where
we were able to develop the 20082009 Program of Work focusing on
the suggestions from the Chamber
2012 meetings. The Chamber 2012
committee will present the 5 five
year strategic plan to the Board of
Directors at their January meeting.
I’d like to thank our Chamber 2012
committee members for their
dedication to this initiative that
will lead our Chamber into the
future.
Again I wish you all a happy
and prosperous New Year
and thank you again for
the opportunity to lead this
Chamber by serving the
community it represents.
Warm Regards
