“Realizing God’s Love by Serving and Empowering...”
Welcome, Pastor Jake Kim!
We have full approval on a memorandum of understanding
(contract) with a temporary supply pastor for 1 year.
We are happy to extend a very special welcome to the Rev. Jake
Kim. Rev. Kim is the Executive Pastor of First Presbyterian
Church of Upland, where he is re-training and re-deploying the
congregation into a “disciple-making congregation." Prior to
returning home to Southern California, he was recruited by
Burlington Stores' corporate headquarters in Burlington, New
Jersey to work as the Manager of Workflow for the Allocations
and Planning Department. Before his stint in corporate America,
he served as the Director of Alumni Relations at Princeton
Theological Seminary and as the founding Director of Alpha
Northern California. Pastor Kim has pastored churches in
Rockford, IL, Corpus Christi, TX, Cleveland, OH, and San
Francisco, CA. He enjoys empowering people to enjoy and
worship Jesus, and to grow as His disciples. Jake and his wife
Yuni live in Upland, and they have two young boys, Ari (Lion)
and Avi (Abraham).
Pastor Kim will begin his ministry at NPC sometime in May.
In the meantime, Session voted to change the status of our
Youth Director Paul Knopf, on a temporary basis, for the period
March 8, 2016 through May 30, 2016. He will be full-time,
assuming all pastoral responsibilities until Pastor Kim arrives.

“Love Openly”
Pat’s Perspective… Small groups in the church, continued thoughts...
Some small groups seem to just emerge! Maybe you begin to notice them in our midst, as folks who seem
to be gathering together on the patio after church, seeming to know one another familiarly, sitting together
when we meet for a pot luck, or heading off for lunch after church, looking as if it was all planned ahead of
time. One such group has existed for a long time here at NPC. When they began they didn’t even have a
name, but the name has come to be, “The Walking Group.”
The Walking Group began over 20 years ago when two men who enjoyed talking to one another decided to
meet together early in the morning to get some exercise and walk about 2 miles on Monday, Wednesday and
Friday at 6:30 a.m. They enjoyed the recently built walking paths in Phillips Ranch. Sometimes they drank
coffee at the donut shop, sitting on the parking lot curb afterwards. Slowly the group began to include others
who wanted to get some exercise.
One time I preached a sermon on how the apostle Paul stated how difficult it was for him to behave in ways
he knew God expected of him. I preached that I knew that that was how it was for me with exercise. I knew I
should, but I just kept putting it off, just like Paul.
After church, one of the walkers called my bluff, inviting me to join the group. I didn’t join them then, but later
on, when I didn’t begin work so early, I joined the regular walkers who by then had included longer walks on
Fridays where we’d walk and conclude by meeting afterwards in restaurants in Walnut, LaVerne, Brackett
Field, Chino and Claremont.
That’s how the Walking Group came to be. Are there rules? Only this: We meet at 6:30 a.m. and begin
walking at exactly 6:40. Fast walkers walk fast and slow walkers walk slow. We pair up to converse as we go
and some folks talk more than others.
The beautiful thing that has happened through the years is that our group has begun to include folks who
have retired and have brought another new generation of walkers to keep us current with life as it is being
lived in this day and age. (These folks usually walk faster).
Now those of the older generation, the original walkers, read from health literature that we will live longer if
we exercise and form lasting friendships. So we value this group we are part of on many levels. We no longer
sit on the curb of the donut shop to drink coffee; we’ve moved to Phillips Ranch Starbucks and sit out on the
patio drinking coffee or tea – old friends, as Simon and Garfunkel once sang:
Old friends,
Sat on their park bench
Like bookends.
Can you imagine us
Years from today,
Sharing a park bench quietly?
How terribly strange
to be seventy.
Old friends,
Memory brushes the same years,
silently sharing the same fear...
We who live in the suburbs yearn to create the small town closeness that once came naturally to our
forbearers. It’s in our blood, so God gives us opportunities to form small groups that bring us into the sweet
spaces that provide family- neighbor closeness.
The more I look to see closely how important these friendship circles are to the well-being of a congregation,
then the more I feel compelled to suggest that those folks who see the value of being part of a gathering
recognize how clique-like we appear, and how we need to leave open spaces in our circle and lead others to
form groups that suit their needs.
Not everybody wants to get up at 6:30!
But if you do, you’re welcome to join us.
In Christ, Pat Williams, Parish Associate

The FOOD DRIVE is the 1st Sunday of each month. NPC supports Inland Valley Hope Partners food
banks. Soups, rice, beans, boxed dinners, cereals, and pastas are good choices. We are also collecting plastic grocery bags. If you have a surplus, IVHP can use them! Please leave them with your
food donation. The Deacons also accept cash and check donations so IVHP can purchase larger
amounts of food. We now have a donation can in the shopping cart. Make checks payable to NPC
with IVHP on the memo line.
Inland Valley Hope Partners is requesting special items for their Beta Center and food banks. The
following items are needed:
Manual can openers - many of the food recipients have no way to open the food that has been shared.
Hygiene items - even partially used like lotions, shampoos, and the like.
Office supplies - the various IVHP offices welcome any office supplies that would be available.
You may bring these items along with your canned food on the 1st Sunday of each month. Thank you!
