ANNUAL REPORT 2013
WHO WE ARE
Founded in 1974, Business for the Arts (Council for Business and the Arts

the value of investing in the arts and to address the concerns and interests of
the arts and culture sector. Our programs, events, training and educational
resources enable arts organizations to partner more effectively with the
business community. Our goal is to develop the next generation of creative
thinkers, innovators, influencers and leaders with the knowledge, skills and
resolve to guide arts and culture organizations in their financial and artistic
management.
VISION
To inspire Canada’s business community to partner
with the arts to ensure a thriving cultural sector.

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT AND CHAIRMAN
Our efforts in 2013 to bridge the gap between business and the arts in
Canada continues to surge forward at a remarkable pace. From coast to
coast, in rural towns and major urban centres, our programs to stimulate
new investment in the arts have brought much-needed resources and skills
to hundreds of small and mid-sized arts organizations who serve and are
valued by their communities.
By inspiring local businesses to partner and invest, and by providing matching
funds and training in the art of sponsorship to arts organizations, we have
made a significant impact on small community theatres, artist collectives,
street festivals, art galleries, orchestras and film festivals.
Since the introduction of our artsVest™ program in 2002 to 2013, we
have facilitated sponsorship relationships between 1,571 businesses with
465 arts organizations in five provinces, and generated more than $9
million in private sector sponsorship by leveraging just under $3 million in
matching funds. In 2013, our national expansion included the launch of the
program in British Columbia, Toronto and Nova Scotia as well as seven new
communities in Ontario. The program was also extended for another two
years in Saskatchewan.
In 2013, boardLink™, our board-matching program, saw more than 400
young professionals come together to participate in our national boardLink
Live tour in Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa-Gatineau,
Toronto, Vancouver and Winnipeg, connecting young professionals to nonprofit arts organizations looking for board and committee members. We’re
delighted to report that the majority of these events were sold out.
Institutional arts, culture and heritage sector leaders from across the country
gathered in Montreal from April 12-14 for the 16th Annual Canadian Arts
Summit to address the concerns of the arts and culture sector.
And to cap off a great year, our annual awards black-tie celebration at The
Carlu in Toronto drew more than 450 guests to honour individuals and
companies who exemplify true arts championship.
It is with great pride that we salute our members, sponsors and partners,
board of directors, ambassadors, staff and volunteers for their continued
support and dedication over the past year. Stay tuned for more exciting
developments as we celebrate our 40th anniversary in 2014!

UPCOMING IN 2014
OUR 40TH ANNIVERSARY
In 2014, we celebrate our 40th anniversary and four decades of investing in communities to strengthen
Canada’s cultural assets. In 1974, a group of leading business CEOs in Canada saw a need to encourage
private sector support of the arts to strengthen our cultural institutions, support our artists and improve
quality of life for all. Business for the Arts continues that vision today by working at a grassroots/community
level to create meaningful partnerships between business and the arts. Be sure to join us later this year for
our 40th anniversary bash at the Canadian Arts and Business Awards.
CANADIAN ARTS AND BUSINESS AWARDS
We’ve updated our award categories to better acknowledge the accomplishments of business and arts
leaders and organizations in creating a thriving cultural sector. Along with our Edmund C. Bovey Award,

CANADIAN ARTS SUMMIT
The 18th Annual Canadian Arts Summit will take place April 10-12, 2014
in Toronto. Organized by Business for the Arts in partnership with The
Banff Centre, the weekend forum brings together the chief executives,
artistic directors and board chairs of Canada’s largest not-for-profit cultural
institutions to discuss the issues and challenges facing our arts and culture
sector. Ten individuals will be invited to join the conference as fellows.
A livestream of panels and discussions in both official languages will also
be available. Summit materials and videos for 2013 can be viewed at
canadianartssummit.com.
BOARDLINK™ NATIONAL TOUR
On the heels of last year’s successful sold-out national tour, our live
matching events, where arts organizations and young professionals
have the opportunity to meet face to face to discuss available volunteer
opportunities, kicked off in Vancouver in May with remaining events in
Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Ottawa-Gatineau, Montreal, Toronto, and
Winnipeg scheduled for fall 2014.
ART OF SPONSORSHIP E-LEARNING COURSE
Business for the Arts is developing a comprehensive e-learning course called
The Art of Sponsorship. It is designed to dovetail with the artsVest program,
with our participating small to mid-sized arts and culture organizations in
mind. The series of six modules will start with a general overview of the
process of securing sponsorship, a Sponsorship 101. This will be followed
in the coming year with five additional in-depth modules that will cover
specific stages of the sponsorship cycle.

INVESTING IN BUSINESS FOR THE ARTS
IS INVESTING IN YOUR COMMUNITY
Last year, member contributions helped leverage more than $3.8 million in
private and public sector support in our artsVest™ national program, which
provided investment and training to 190 arts organizations and helped
them secure 600 new business partners. Member contributions last year
also helped 110 arts organizations meet more than 500 young business
professionals who were interested in volunteering on an arts board through
our national boardLink™ program.
Your contributions are also vital to our work in bringing Canada’s arts and
culture leaders together, in partnership with The Banff Centre, for our
annual Canadian Arts Summit to discuss best practices, explore new ideas
and initiate national projects.
As a contributor to Business for the Arts, you become
part of a national network of business leaders in
Canada who understand the economic and social
value of investing in the arts.
When you contribute to Business for the Arts, your dollars are leveraged
by a multiplier of $3.30 to reach arts organizations both large and small in
communities across the country, enabling us to bring much-needed skills
and training to Canada’s arts sector.
Why is this important? Because businesses that invest in the arts recognize
that their investment improves the quality of life for the communities around
them, as well as that of their employees.
NATIONAL BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP
Business leaders cite the improvement of quality of life for communities as
the number one reason for investing in the arts, linking a healthy, stimulating
cultural environment with healthy and happy communities1.
• Exclusive member events hosted by BftA Board of Directors.
• Member Circle recognition and first rights for tables at the Canadian Arts
and Business Awards.
• First rights to sponsor and attend national and international conferences,
events and programs.
• Front of the line ticket opportunities for select artsScene events.
Canadians concur, with 92% of Canadians believing that arts and culture
make a community a better place to live2. Moreover, we know that
Canadians are consuming the arts in large quantity. Canadian spending on
live performing arts ($1.4 billion) is more than double their spending ($650
million) on live sports events3.
EXCLUSIVE EVENTS
RECOGNITION
And there’s more. Supporting the arts can boost your market share, enhance
your brand awareness and community profile, engage your employees and
win new customers.
• Profile in BftA newsletter (reach 10,000+).
• Opportunity to be profiled at BftA events.
• Recognition on BftA marketing collateral, and the Canadian Arts and
Business Awards.
When business and the arts come together, the benefits are significant and
meaningful.
