Since the introduction of the
original VSC system in 1979,
Foster + Freeman have been
recognised as world leaders in
the design and manufacture of
high sepecification systems for
the forensic examination of
questioned documents.
A multi-functional system for the examination and
authentication of passpor ts, ID cards and drivers’ licences
The current range of VSC systems
includes the VSC6000/HS, the
compact but powerful VSC400
and the modular range of VSC40
instruments.
Of a similar size to the compact passport
scanners commonly seen at airport terminals,
the VSC-QC1 provides a far more
comprehensive interrogation of a document.
The range is supplemented by
the VSC-QC1, a fast ‘touch screen’
system for the verification of
passports and ID cards.
The VSC-QC1 enables 12 authenticity checks to
be carried out on a passport or ID card in a
matter of seconds, combining ease of use with
rapid examination and data capture.
Supremely versatile, typical applications for
the VSC-QC1 can be found at border
crossing points, immigration controls, secure
airport terminals, in police or border patrol
vehicles, or within private companies such as
hotels, banks, car rental companies or
casinos where identity documents may be
used as a security deposit.

• Compact system suitable for use in vehicles
Whilst the integral 10” display is recommended for users
seeking a document scanner that is efficient and intuitive, the
option to use the VSC-QC1 with any Windows compatible
device make the system an ideal solution for large scale
deployment within organisations with an IT infrastructure.
Fully portable for mobile operation
Frontline immigration & border control
Using the optional DC adaptor, the VSC-QC1 can be
powered via a car battery making it the most uniquely
mobile VSC in the Foster + Freeman range.
For countries dealing with the problem of increased
illegal immigration or under threat from terrorism, the
VSC-QC1 provides a solution that surpasses the
frontline technology currently in the field.
Examine identity documents and driving licences using the
VSC-QC1 within a police or border control vehicle.
A laptop or touch screen PC, licence plate reader and
GPS systems are now commonplace in modern police
and security vehicles. Connecting a VSC-QC1 to an incar computer allows officers to quickly authenticate
and record ID documents whilst on patrol.
The VSC-QC1 can dramatically upgrade security when
deployed for passport examination at immigration
control.
Document scans are fast and efficient resulting in a high
first time read rate and a remarkably low error rate.

Front desk fraud prevention system
Expert results with minimal training
Hotels, casinos, and car rental companies often take
passports, national ID cards and drivers' licences as
security against high value items.
It can take more than 3 years to train a forensic
document examiner, a VSC-QC1 operator can be
identifying suspect documents in a matter of hours.
Examining identity documents using the VSC-QC1 can
help prevent the theft of goods and services.
Simple and effective software used in combination with
the optional security document reference database will
allow a new VSC-QC1 user to confidently examine the
many thousands of passports, ID cards and drivers
licences currently in circulation.
Performing a simple discreet document scan at the front
desk in under 5 seconds will allow the operator to detect
counterfeits with minimal offence to the customer.
Data can be recorded, stored or exported, eliminating
the need for manual data entry.
Key features that benefit VSC-QC1 users that do not have
experience in document examination include, semiautomated examinations, a contactless RFID reader, and
automatic pass or fail notification based upon MRZ data.

Video microscopy to assist sample selection
The Foram® has a large, A4 size, XY translation stage with fine spatial adjustment
to allow the operator to align the laser probe on to a sample as small as 5 microns.
Sample selection is assisted by the use of an integral video microscope with a
rotating turret that can be fitted with up to four objective lenses to provide
on-screen magnification of up to x450 on a 22" monitor. The ability to select small
samples enables the operator to examine individual particles or fibres for instance.
To protect samples from laser damage, the Foram® is fitted with a low power
laser probe with an intensity control that permits operation as low as 10% of
maximum output. Operation at low laser intensity is compensated for by signal
integration to provide measurable Raman spectra.
Powerful signal processing functions
Processing functions such as signal integration and averaging enhance the
naturally low intensity of Raman emissions to ensure accurate and reproducible
spectra. Other functions include baseline correction to remove background
fluorescence and peak labelling for easy-to-read printouts.
Technical features
®
The Foram has a precision X-Y translation
stage for accurate laser alignment.

Spectral comparisons and
database search
Foram® employs an automatic
peak-to-peak correlator, a program
that identifies the peaks in two preselected spectra and determines the
significance of their match. This
provides a simple numeric measure of
the degree of similarity of two
spectra, making it ideal for comparing
large numbers of spectra and for
database search and match enquiries.
Foram® also provides facilities for
users to create databases.
Spectra of ink samples compared
automatically using peak-to-peak
correlation giving a match score of 99.6%.

ESDA 2
®
THE IMAGING SYSTEM FOR INDENTED WRITING
ESDA 2- the improved system for
detecting indented writing on
questioned documents
®
New features include:
● Toner pad for cleaner image development
● Retains the original cascade development technique
● Processes documents up to A3 size
● Replaceable vacuum bed
● Aerosol hood for 'powder cloud' development
ESDA 2
®
Outstanding technology with improved design
ESDA® is the leading technology for detecting indented writing on questioned
documents. ESDA® works by creating an invisible electrostatic image of indented
writing, which is then visualised by the application of charge sensitive toners.
The sensitive imaging process reacts to sites of microscopic damage to fibres at the
surface of a document, which have been created by abrasive interaction with
overlying surfaces during the act of handwriting.
ESDA® is the ideal forensic tool. As well as being simple to operate, it produces positive,
life-size transparencies of indented writing without damage or contamination to original
documents and without interference to other forensic tests, and documents may be
processed repeatedly without loss of sensitivity.
The Cascade Developer
This is the standard image development system for ESDA and consists of carrier
beads coated with specially formulated toner powder that becomes tribo-electrically
charged when in contact with the beads. When ‘cascaded’ over the electrostatic
image of the document the charged toner becomes dislodged and is attracted to the
areas of indented writing. The beads are recovered from the collection tray on the
side of the instrument for reuse. Loose toner which may fall on to the background
is recaptured by the carrier beads and removed to maintain a good
image contrast.
The Toner Pad development system
Traditionally, cascade developers have been used in the
image development process but ESDA®2 is supplied with a
new system - the Toner Pad – a technique that ensures a
cleaner operating experience while maintaining excellent
sensitivity.
The Toner Pad allows the operator
more control over the image
development process.
A soft, brushed-textile pad, impregnated with toner is
simply wiped across the surface of the imaging film
to produce visible images of any indented writing
present. Each hand held pad, has an integral
reservoir of toner, sufficient for 200 images, which is
simply dispensed into the pad, prior to use, with a
light tap. The new system is cleaner to use; it removes
the need to handle loose powder and, as the
concentration of toner in the pad is easy to control, it
eliminates problems associated with under-or over-toned
cascade developer.
The Toner Pad gives the operator better control of the image development process as it
can be applied to specific areas of interest. It also eliminates the need to constantly
recover cascade beads.
The Aerosol Hood development system (optional accessory)
Now available as an accessory, the Aerosol Hood is an alternative to Cascade Developer
and the Toner Pad. It dispenses a fine powder cloud of toner which is attracted to the
electrostatic image of any indented writing as it settles over the document.
The clear acrylic hood enables the operator to monitor image development to obtain
optimum results. It uses the same toner as the cascade developer.

New A3 size bed with airborne toner filter
The larger vacuum bed and wider imaging film enable documents up to A3 size (310mm
x 440mm) to be processed. The new stainless steel vacuum bed is also easily replaced.
ESDA®2 also features a powerful extraction fan and filter to remove airborne toner. Air
above the instrument is drawn around the sides of the vacuum bed and through the
filter to create a cleaner operating environment.
Permanent records
Images of indented writing can be made permanent by the simple process of laminating
the developed images with transparent self-adhesive plastic film.
ESDA 2 – the complete system
®
ESDA®2 is designed for examining all types of documents up to A3 size and is supplied
with one reel of imaging film, cascade developer, 50 toner pads, a pack of fixing film and
document humidifier. Foster & Freeman are always pleased to offer advice, training or
routine equipment maintenance, and ESDA®2 is just one of a range of innovative
instruments available to forensic science laboratories for improving the quality of evidence.

ESDA -Lite
®
THE IMAGING SYSTEM FOR INDENTED WRITING
The new portable system for
detecting indented writing on
questioned documents
Features include:
● Complete, portable system weighing less than 18kg
● Cascade and Toner Pad development techniques
● Document examination bed 230mm x 358mm
● Universal power input for 'go-anywhere' operation
● Fast and simple to operate with no interference
with other forensic tests
ESDA -Lite
®
ESDA - Lite a proven system that's now portable
®
Designed for travelling, the new 'ESDA®-Lite' is ideal for the private document examiner
commissioned to work away from the laboratory and is supplied complete with
accessories in a robust, padded carrying case that's suitable for air travel.
Electrostatic imaging, the most effective technology for detecting indented writing on
questioned documents, creates an invisible image of indented writing, which is visualised
by the application of charge sensitive toners. The sensitive imaging process reacts to sites
of microscopic damage on the surface of a document, which have been created by the
abrasive interaction with overlying surfaces during the act of handwriting.
ESDA® is the ideal forensic tool. As well as being simple to operate, it produces positive,
life-size transparencies of indented writing without damage or contamination to the
original document and without interference to other forensic tests, and documents may
be processed repeatedly without loss of sensitivity.
ESDA - Lite Cascade and Toner Pad development techniques
®
ESDA®-Lite is supplied with a choice of development techniques, in both cases the document
being examined is placed on to the vacuum bed and overlaid with the imaging film.
The corona discharge unit is passed over the film two or three times to charge the surface and
form latent images of the indentations present.
Development of a visible image is achieved by either lifting the vacuum bed to an angle and
pouring cascade developer (fine beads coated with toner) over the surface of the film.
This process is continued until a satisfactory image is obtained. The developer beads are
collected in a tilting tray on the side of the instrument for further use.
The imaging film and developers are safely located
under the vacuum bed for compact transportation.
ESDA®-Lite is quickly operational by simply
attaching the imaging film roll onto the locating
pins.
In situations when cascade development is not convenient the Toner
Pad technique can be used. A soft, brushed-textile pad,
impregnated with toner is wiped across the surface of the
imaging film to produce visible images. Each hand held pad has
an integral reservoir of toner which is simply dispensed into the
pad, prior to use, with a light tap.
If, after inspection, the results are required for record, a protective
sheet of transparent adhesive film can be laid over the image to
produce a permanent image. This is peeled away from the
document which is recovered completely undamaged.
