Hanukkah New Years!
December 17,
2010

After the first snow of
the season, the only thing
on that is everyone’s mind
is, Christmas! With only a
handle full of days left before
Christmas Vacation begins,
it’s hard to concentrate on
anything but presents, family,
and Santa. But what about
those that don’t celebrate
Christmas? “Those
people are crazy!”
you might scream
in a fit of rage,
“How dare someone
not
celebrate
Christmas!!”
The truth of the
matter is that 94%
of the American
population
does
celebrate
Christmas. What
does the other 6%
of
American’s
celebrate
during
the
month
of
December? Only the most
wonderful
holiday
ever;
Hanukkah.
The
average
person
might
shout
a
“Happy Hanukkah” to a
friend, but do they even
know what Hanukkah is?
Hanukkah happens to be
the most important Jewish
holiday. It marks one of the
greatest miracles in Jewish
history. Over 2,400 years ago,
Judea was ruled by an evil
Syrian king named Antiochus.
He forced his Jewish subjects
to assimilate to the Greek
culture. Antiochus oppressed
symbolizing the eight days of
Hanukkah. On Hanukkah eve,
celebrants light a “shamash”
(usually the extra candle in the
middle of the menorah), and then
use this lit candle to light the first
candle on the left. This ritual
continues over the next eight
days until all eight candles are lit.
One ritual that is similar to
Christmas is the singing of
songs in a celebratory manor.
Although there are not as many
Hanukkah songs as there are
Christmas carols, there is still a
lot to choose from. Most songs
have games that go along with
them such as the
song “I Have A
Little Dreidel.”
While
singing
this song, players
spin a dreidal.
Depending
on
which side it lands
on, the player win
or lose candy.
Another
ritual
celebrated during
Hanukkah
is
the eating of

After three-years of struggling

A new years resolution, if you
don’t already know, is a promise
to something, or someone, that
a person makes on New Years
Eve. Their goal is to dedicate
themselves to their resolution all
throughout the New Year. Often
time you will hear of people
choosing to eat healthier
and start exercising more.
Therefore, come January
of the new year, gym’s all
over the country gain many
new members. And usually,
once a few months have
passed, gyms get less and less
populated. Sometimes, you
can find people who have a
bit more unique resolutions.
While not everyone follows
their words true for the entire
year, here are a few people
who are gong to try.
Name: Jessica Perez
Resolution: Make more
time for myself
Reason:
Jessica
spends so much time
doing schoolwork and
participating in clubs that
she doesn’t take the time
to enjoy her senior year.
Starting January 1, 2011,
expect to see Jessica at a
couple less school events,
and
enjoying
herself
elsewhere.

Name: Aaron Dawson
Resolution: Get his license,
a job, and volunteer
Reason: Aaron includes
three goals for his new years
resolution. By getting a
license it will allow him to
get himself around town. He
put it as giving himself, “a
sense of freedom.” A job will
give him a steady income,
which is special to him.
And volunteering around his
community makes him feel
good. He hopes to do more of
these things once 2011 hits.

Santa cannot do it all alone; of course he needs
the assitance of his little helpers:

line, and make sure he does not eat too many cookies prior to
Christmas Eve.
Location: Santa Claus was born and raised in the North
Pole, and has lived there nearly all of his life.
Job Descripton: This smooth operator will enter your house
through your chimney while you sleep, and leave you with
many wonderful gifts. He is not a force to be reckoned with!
Little Known Fact: What this jolly old man wouldn’t want
you to know? He has a closet full of Darth Vader collectables.
Inventor of the magic toy-making machine:
Bushy Evergreen
Guardian of the secret of where Father
Christmas’s village is located: Pepper Minstix
The oldest elf and cofounder of the secret village
in The North Pole: Shinny Upatree

through fog, blizzards, tornadoes, and hail the size
of baseballs.
Three words to describe Rudolph: Hardworking, alpha male, jackhammer, merciless, insatiable.
Body Type: Slender and furry with bluging
muscles.
Special Talents: Besides his super nifty, red
glowing nose, Rudolph studly athletic abilities and
special spidey senses make him a prime candidate
for Christmas M.V.P.
Who will be crowned this Christmas’s M.V.P? Will it be jolly Santa, the highly skilled elves, or the studmuffin
Rudolph? It’s up to the holiday committee, but you can contact your nearest messenger pigeon to cast your vote.
My brother booby-trapped
the house to try and catch Santa.
You couldn’t even see the floor; it
was so covered in string. One of
our dogs just tore through it and
ruined all of Brads work in trying
to catch ol’ Saint Nick.

Christmas
memories
When I was seven and I
came downstairs and there was a
humungous doll-house in the center
of the living room. I raced to it and,
what to my wondering eyes did
appear?? There was a rolly, polly
beagal puppy sitting there when I
open the doll-house door.
-Angelica Dawson
Although they don’t have the
same families both agree, “Spending
time with our grandkids and kids is
the best part of Christmas. Seeing
the joy on their faces when they
open their presents is truly what
Christmas is all about.
-Mrs. Crugar and Mr. Nay.
“My
fondest
Christmas
memory would have to be when
I was five. I had always wanted
to drive and I finally got that new
racecar that I had been wanting.
My eyes lit up and I was so
excited!”

GINGERBREAD
MEN
1 c. butter
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1 c. molasses
2 tbsp. vinegar
1 1/2 c. flour
1 1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. ginger
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. cloves
1/2 tsp. salt
Mix together butter and sugar.
Add the remaining ingredients
and mix well. Spread dough.
Form gingerbread men by
cutting with cookie cutter. (May
be helpful to refrigerator dough
for a while before cutting. I’ve
always used this recipe with
children at school and stored
in refrigerator to use the next
day.) Bake in greased pan at 375
degrees until done. Decorate with
powdered sugar and milk icing
and whatever else kids want to
use. (This is delicious and a fun
activity at Christmas.)

Come
one,
come
all to FCA.There are
many well-known clubs
on the RHS campus.
LGBT,
Key
Club,
ROTC, sound familiar?
All of us have heard
those names a time or
two. The Fellowship of
Christian Athletes is a
club that up until this
year, even I had never
heard of. Every Tuesday
morning at 7 am all are
welcome to join a bible
study and share the
appreciation for one of
God’s biggest blessings:
SPORTS.
Members
are
encouraged
to
be athletes, but it is
definitely not required.
The sole purpose of
the club is to spread
the word of God and
keep the light in todays
youth lit even in a place
full of drama, peer
pressure, and influential
situations. Supervisor,

Mike
Pardon,
has
excelled in educating
the group about the bible
and is helping Roseburg
students gain a clearer
perspective on the way
they should look at life.
Fortunately the group is
growing each week and
hopefully will continue
to grow. A leadership
team is also in the works.
The group brainstorms
fun and unique ways to
help out the Roseburg
community. A recent
event that was organized
was
a
“Rake
and
Run”.
Wyatt
Jones,
Jared
Priestley
and
Jake Backen all met
on Saturday, Nov. 13
dressed in black to
sneak around Roseburg
and rake people’s yards,
then dash away.
If you are interested
in FCA, the meetings
occur every Tuesday
at 7 am in room M104
(Mr.
Pardon’s
classroom). Bring a
friend, or bring ten.

‘Twas the night before Christmas...
‘Twas the night before
Christmas and all through
the house, not a mammal was
stirring,
not even a
liger. The
stockings
were hung
with care,
in
hopes
that better

nestled all
snug in their

under the
stairs, one had a runny nose
and one had dreads. When
out on the lawn there arose
such a clatter, we all sprang
from bed to see what was the
matter! Away to the dryer I
flew like a flash, Tore open
the door and threw up the
lint trap. There inside was a
Christmas miracle. The Santa
costume was as good as new!
After feeding 3 gallons of
eggnog to my baby brother,
he threw up all over the Santa
costume. I had to run it through
the wash, for I was very afraid
that it would never see the light
of day again. When I walk into
the living room I see something
new, a Christmas tree that was
very blue. With amazement in
my eyes I started to cry, for my
dear new puppy was going to
die. Then there I sat, waiting for
Santa, when out of the chimney
came a purple banana. I was
not sure if I should scatter away
with fright, or tell the banana I
wanted to fight. I then decided
to have a one-on- one with the
purple banana. I said to it, “
where might Mr. Saint Nicolas
be? For when you came down
my chimney, I was for sure you
would be he. The banana was
confused to say the least; he did
not have an answer for me. “I
was just passing through,” he
claimed. I suddenly sat down to
cry, claiming I wanted to die, for
I was so sure Santa could fix my
sty on my eye. The purple banana
sat down

saying,
“Fear

I

hope in
my head as I started to whittle
the paper into such cutting edge
snowflakes. The purple banana
got bored and grew wings. So
he flapped and he flapped to the
top of the tree, as he stood watch
for the Pillsbury doughboy. For
Santa took all the cookies and
he craved pastries with the left
over warm milk. “Oh what’s
that?” I said not a mouse or
a child. “Is it the doughboy?
I think not it appears to be ole
saint nick.” I jumped up with
glee, and screamed when I saw
that it was not ole saint nick
but an imposter called the
Grinch. Next thing I know my
head was a spinning and I fell
in a trance and woke up in a
hole. I start to panic but then
realize I read this in a book
called Alice and wonderland.
I started to daydream when all
of a sudden I look up and I see
little oompa loompas. As they
pulled me up I
came to find that
I was simply
mistaken and it
was Santa’s little
elves. It was
such a happy
ending they took
me to Santa’s
workshop where
you
smelled
magic in the air
and
spaghetti
covered in syrup
was served day
in and day out.
I had simply
forgot all about
my awful night
and lived happily
ever
after.
