Large Fight Erupts At Racino Bar Opening

MTA: 3rd Avenue Exit
To Reopen In May

After more than two years of
work, engineers with the Metropolitan Transit Authority say they
expect to reopen the Whitestone
Expressway’s 3rd Avenue exit by the
end of May 2015.
MTA Bridges and Tunnels closed
off the exit ramp in January 2013 as
part of a $109 million capital improvement project to reconstruct
the 1,010-foot-long roadway and
add a new emergency breakdown

will add a deceleration lane and new
curbing at the 14th Avenue exit.
“The work was expected to be
completed earlier, but this winter’s
extreme weather caused delays,”
MTA spokesperson Judie Glave
said in a statement. “The contractor is making up for lost time as best
they can to get the work finished by

However, drivers shouldn’t get
their hopes up just yet. Glave said
the completion of the exit ramp is

The 3rd Avenue exit has been
closed to traffic for the past 27
months, causing a flood of congestion and detours for drivers taking
the adjoining Cross Island Parkway.
As the exit is the last one before the
bridge, drivers who do not wish to
go to the Bronx – and pay the toll
– have to exit earlier. Immediately
after the 2013 closure, local civic
leaders complained about the signage warning of the closure, noting
that many drivers who either didn’t
know or forget the exit was closed
ended up on the bridge.

Commuters from Queens to Manhattan started their week with an especially heavy dose of 7 train pain.
Around 8:30 a.m. Monday morning, a Manhattan-bound train stalled
in the tunnel between Vernon Boulevard-Jackson Avenue and Grand
Central. According to the MTA, the
cause of the accident was a smoke condition created when the car’s contact
shoe touched the third rail protection
board.
The stalled train was stuck underground for nearly two hours, according to the MTA.
Service was subsequently suspended in both directions; limited service
was restored by 10:15 a.m.
The FDNY said all passengers were
removed by a rescue train and one
passenger received medical attention,
which the MTA identified as a passenger who felt faint.
Monday’s incident follows a winter
of passenger discontent with 7 train
performance, coupled with scheduled
work. In March, Councilman Jimmy
Van Bramer (D-Sunnyside) held a press
conference flanked by unhappy riders to
call out the MTA for what he called “disgraceful” 7 train service and disruptions
over the past several months, including
a day-long shutdown due to an icy rail
in early February.
“Monday’s catastrophic delays with
the disabled train on the 7 line is just
one more incident in a long list of horrific experiences Queens riders face
almost every single day during rush
hour,” Van Bramer said in a statement
Monday.
“The MTA is still investigating the
cause of Monday morning’s incident,
but it does not appear related to the
weather-related issues seen earlier this
year,” an MTA spokesperson said in
response. “As subway ridership continues to grow, however, even the smallest
incidents have the potential to disrupt
travel for more and more of our customers… While [repair and maintenance] work creates temporary inconveniences on nights and weekends, this
short-term pain will bring long-term
gain for customers all along the 7.”

Sunrise: $5.8M Settlement Is A First Step

A $5.8 million settlement to support the relocation of 45 auto shops
from Willets Point to the Bronx will
fund the initial costs of that process,
but businesses expect to seek more,
according to leader Marco Neira.
Neira is President of the Sunrise
Cooperative, a formal group of businesses that sued the City and the
Queens Development Group – a joint
venture of Sterling Equities and Related Companies – arguing that their
plan to build $3 billion worth of retail
and residential space on the peripherals of Citi Field was unlawful.
In March, a settlement agreement
established $5.8 million to help with
the Cooperative’s relocation en masse
to a warehouse in Hunts Point in the
Bronx, making way for the Willets
Point development. The funds will be
available through an escrow fund, disbursement of which must be approved
by the New York City Economic Development Corporation.
The City will pay $4.8 million and
the Queens Development Group will
provide $960,000 of those funds. The
Sunrise Cooperative will contribute
$143,000 to the fund. Councilwoman
Julissa Ferreras (D-East Elmhurst),
who helped negotiate the agreement,
called it “beneficial to the local com-
munity, good for business and contributing to the progress of our City.”
Neira called the settlement a “victory,” noting that construction to
make the Hunts Point location suitable
for the auto shops is estimated to run
around $4 million. However, he added,
the Cooperative intends to seek further
financial support from the City.
“For right now it’s enough, but if
you want to have everything in the facility, we need more money in order
to install,” he explained. “It’s important [Mayor Bill de Blasio] knows that
we are serving the community... and
we’re planning to let [him] know that
we need more support.”
The community across the river,
however, is not convinced that the
Cooperative’s relocation will make a
positive impact.
Josephine Infante, president of the
Hunts Point Economic Development
Corporation, said traffic congestion in
the area, as well as the prevalence of
similar shops, pose “challenges” to the
project.
“I would want it to work but at this
point right now, it’s anybody’s guess,”
Infante said. “There’s no welcome mat
here.”
Per the settlement, Sunrise Cooperative businesses must vacate the
first construction phase of the Willets
Point development by June 1. Many
are already in temporary locations.
Neira said he expects the businesses
to be fully relocated in the Bronx by
November.

Extensive Repairs for FP Carousel

The Forest Park Carousel has a new
look as it reopened for the spring season.
The landmarked Woodhaven Merry-go-round reopened last week for its
fourth season since a new vendor put
it back into service in 2012.
While it has undergone minor fixes
in the past, NY Carousel, which is the
Carousel’s operator, stripped the merry-go-round down to its base to replace
parts in the 100-year-old attraction.
According to a release from NY
Carousel, several parts of the ride were
fixed and replaced, including the top
bearing, cranks, sweeps and commutator.
“Over the past several months we
undertook a major rehabilitation project of the 100-year-old Forest Park
Carousel,” David Galst, the company’s
managing director, said. “The entire
machine was disassembled and every
mechanical and electrical component
was examined. As with any type of aging hardware, certain parts had to be
fixed and replaced.”
NY Carousel said it worked with
Todd Goings from Carousels and
Carvings on the project. Goings is a
renowned merry-go-round expert,
who is known as the “Carousel Doctor.”
Goings has worked on repairs for
other carousels throughout the City,
including the Prospect Park Carousel
in Brooklyn. According to a 2012 New
York Times article, Goings traveled
from his home in Ohio to help repair

Airport Roundtable Gets Off the Ground

The seemingly never ending discussions about a roundtable for LaGuardia and John F. Kennedy airports
came to an end Tuesday night as all
parties involved left a meeting at York
College with smiles on their faces.
When the Port Authority announced the structure of the roundtable in February, local advocacy groups
were less than pleased with the result.
Now the tables have turned with
the outspoken leaders of Queens Quiet
Skies, Janet McEneaney, and Eastern
Queens Alliance, Barbara Brown, serving as co-chairs of the Coordinating
Committee for the two airport groups.
Both leaders were happy to be
unanimously voted to take the reins of
the newly formed committee.
“If I could have imagined the best
possible way to move forward, this
would have been it,” McEneaney said.
“Everyone is motivated to get things
done.”
Brown was focused on all the work
ahead of them, but is content in knowing that the people who sparked the
movement towards building a roundtable are at the forefront of the decision making.
“I’m anxious to get started. This
has taken long enough,” Brown said.

prioritize the issues for all the airport
communities.”
The purpose of the roundtable is
to serve as a collective body to report
community issues revolving around
the airports to the Port Authority and
the Federal Aviation Administration.
It will also receive feedback from the
PA and FAA about noise monitoring
and runway modifications.
The approximately 100 attendees
also named Kendall Lampkin, executive assistant for intergovernmental
relations at the Town of Hempstead,
to the vice-chair position to represent
Long Island.
Richard Hellenbrecht, former president of the Queens Civic Congress
and member of Community Board
13, was named the secretary for the
committee, which is responsible for
coordinating between the two specific
airport committees and the PA, along
with handling a lot of the legwork for
the roundtable.
Now that the coordinating committee has been established, they will have to
create the by-laws for the roundtable. The
committee can also choose to name a second vice-chair if they feel it is necessary,
which was brought up at the meeting.
Ralph Tragale, the PA’s assistant
director of aviation, started the meeting by declaring that the agency was
insistent on moving forward and
Tuesday’s meeting would be different
from the previous gatherings.
“I’m not going to entertain going
back and forth between one or two
roundtables,” Tragale said. “If you
don’t like that, that’s OK, but remember where we were in November. So be
kind to me.”
The attendees, who consisted of
residents and elected officials from all
of Queens and western Long Island,
complied with his request and participated in discussions that steered in a
mostly productive direction.
Once Brown and McEneaney were
chosen, Tragale handed off the microphone, stepped out of the hot seat and
joined other PA members on the side
of the room, rather than sitting front
and center.
“The best feeling is that the communities will finally have an opportunity to discuss the important issues
that they’re concerned about,” Tragale
said after the meeting.
Both Tragale and FAA representatives also committed to being available
for any concerns that may arise between Tuesday’s meeting and the first
official roundtable meeting.

Smart Growth In Queens
The news that Queens’ population has grown by 90,000 this decade so far is worth
cautious optimism. On one hand it seems we have closed the door on the urban decay of the latter 20th Century. Queens is becoming home to new arrivals and young
professionals who are keeping our economy thriving.
But this growth has to be sustainable.
Affordable housing is increasingly difficult to find. As incomes remain depressed
as a result of the financial crisis, it is more important than ever for the city to build
housing that is affordable. Queens residents have some of the longest commutes in
the country. No new subways have been built in the Borough since the 1980s and
buses are subject to the congestion of roads built for a population that is only a fraction the current numbers. And while the city has been building schools all across
Queens, whether or not they are adequately funded and are able to accommodate
the growing population of immigrant children remains a concern.
Queens is growing. The census numbers prove it. The people of Queens must
demand that City Hall and their elected officials look towards sustaining our future
growth as they make decisions on spending on capital projects. Participatory Budgeting is only good if the citizens of this community set the priorities for the future.
Spending tax dollars to sustain a growing population only works if we take out the
pork and listen to the people.

In Support of Congestion Pricing

N
o one wants to pay
more in taxes, tolls or
store prices. No one
questions that the cost of living, working and operating a
business in New York is prohibitively high. However, the traffic
pricing proposal that some are
quick to reject – the Move NY
Fair Plan – would, in fact, reduce
these costs, not increase them.
The hidden but very real tax
is the one we incur whenever
we travel on a transportation
network that is neither funded
nor sensibly priced.
Systemic underinvestment in
maintaining and expanding our
transit and road infrastructure
make trips unpleasant, burdensome and inordinately time
consuming. Motorists in the
New York metro region alone
lose 40 million hours annually
stuck in gridlock, which adds up
to $2.2 billion in lost productivity
– costs that are passed along to
consumers as assuredly as some
opponents of the plan fear the
Move NY tolls would be.
Move NY is the most effective
way out of this trap. With State
and City leaders shying away
from other alternatives to fund
transit and road investments, the
plan would generate a revenue
stream that is both lasting and
enables improvements that make
the roads, bridges and transit
faster, safer and fairer.
Since the mid-1990s, when
government first retrenched
on its obligations to the MTA,
the agency has become increasingly reliant on fare-backed
borrowing for its capital needs.
The outcome is the seemingly
never-ending cycle of fare and
toll increases that has caused
anxiety among commuters, and
rightly so. To support its debt
service, the MTA spends 17
cents of every operating dollar
on bond payments. According
to a study last October by State
Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli,
fares and tolls would go up by
an eye-popping 15 percent if the
$15 billion hole in the upcoming
capital program is plugged with
more debt. This would be on top
of the four percent fare and rate
hikes already scheduled.
We all want a prosperous and
sustainable future. To get there,
we must embrace, not reject,
the Move NY program. It will
smooth out traffic flows, enable
transportation investments that
improve mobility and accessibility from the innermost to most
isolated reaches of the five boroughs, and in turn hold the line
on fares and tolls while slashing
the time-draining traffic congestion that is the real threat to the
city’s continued viability.

TPP: A Bad Deal

t this very moment,
in the backrooms of
Washington D.C., lobbyists from big, multinational
businesses are hashing out a
secretive trade deal that will
hurt businesses and families
right here in Queens. If this
deal goes through, here are
just a few changes we might
see around town:
No more “Buy Local” or
“Made in Queens” labeling on
products – even a “Made in the
USA” sticker might violate the
terms of this trade deal; food
safety regulations set by foreign
countries that are far more lax
than the ones we’re used to;
more countries that can export
to the U.S. free of tariffs, further
threatening the livelihood of
the local family farmers so
important to Queens and to
New York. This trade deal could
allow foreign companies to
sue local or state governments
if they pass ordinations to
protect the environment, such
as New York State’s recently
passed fracking ban. The deal
might include provisions about
copyright law and intellectual
property that extend beyond
the scope of U.S. law. If you’re
on public assistance, new rules
might prevent the government
from offering subsidies that
cut into big pharmaceutical
company profits.
The trade deal in question,
called the Trans-Pacific Partnership, has been called “NAFTA
on steroids” by the nonprofit
group Public Citizen. We all
know what a disaster the North
American Free Trade Agreement has been for American
jobs and business. Now imagine
a bigger, more expansive version
of that same deal involving many
more countries.
The worst part of it all isn’t
even the TPP itself. It’s that,
under a policy called “Trade
Promotion Authority (TPA),”
also known as “Fast Track,”

our concerns. If Fast Track is
approved, Congress can only
take an up-or-down vote on
the completed package. Here’s
how our elected representatives
get to review the draft TPP’s
29 chapters (only 5 of which
have anything to do with trade,
by the way): they get to sit in
a room by themselves with a
copy of the draft legislation.
They can’t make copies, they
can’t bring their staff in – they
can’t even take notes!
So whose voices are being
heard? Corporate lobbyists –
hundreds of them, the very
same ones whose bosses will
stand to benefit from the trade
agreements if passed.
It’s not surprising that
members of Congress most
allied with those big businesses
support fast-track. It might
be surprising to some that our
Democratic President also supports fast-track. It’s evidently
been quite a long time since his
community organizing days.
But most liberals (and many
conservatives) understand the
dangers of Fast Track, no matter who’s president. So far, over
150 Democratic representatives have signed on to a letter
expressing serious concern
over the lack of involvement
Congress has had in the TPP
negotiations. The letter rightly
reminds the President that the
Constitution affords Congress
the responsibility of setting US
trade policy. Other lawmakers
from Queens and New York
State have not yet made their
positions known. Be sure to
call your representative to make
sure they know you do understand this issue and you don’t
support for Fast Track.
If we don’t raise our voices,
Fast Track will become law, and
the TPP will be ratified. Fast
Track is bad for Queens and bad
for democracy – a bad trade.

Queens’ Population Tops 2.3 Million

If the streets seem increasingly more
crowded, it’s not all in your head.
According to Census estimates, the
Borough of Queens grew by about 4
percent this decade, adding over 90,000
residents. The Census Bureau estimates
2,321,580 people live in the Borough.
Queens still trails Brooklyn, which
saw the biggest gain of all the boroughs.
Its population now tops 2.6 million.
The Borough may be growing, but experts warn it
is not because people are not leaving.
New York City suffered significant population
declines due to “white flight” in the 1970s, with the
City’s population dropping more than 10 percent
that decade. Queens saw a population drop of about
half that in that time frame.
That outmigration continues, mostly to the
South, according to Queens College professor Andrew Beveridge, but the city is making up for what
it lost through immigration and a birthrate that outnumbers deaths.
Beveridge noted that the spike in population may
be due to rapid growth early in the decade when the
economy was still bad around the country and people were staying put.
“Growth has been slowing in the last two years,”
he said. “It really is going back to a normal migration pattern.”
As Queens grows, however, the question over
whether or not the Borough has the infrastructure
to handle it becomes ever more present.
“The trouble with the City growing fast is you
need to have services,” Beveridge said. “There is tremendous overhang of fixing infrastructure.”
He added the infrastructure is needed even without
the growth, but a bigger population makes it more vital.
“New York City and the metropolitan region do
not have adequate infrastructure to accommodate
the growing population,” said Wendy Pollack, a
spokeswoman for the Regional Plan Association, in
an email. “Our infrastructure is already falling short
of meeting our current needs, and there will only be
more pressure on our aging systems and facilities as
time goes on and as the population increases.”
Though the City has poured millions into building new schools all across the Borough, they’re often
already overcrowded by the time they open.
The growing population also strains the City’s roads,
subways and buses, and drives up the cost of housing.
The 2010 official Census numbers claimed
Queens grew by only about 1,400 people in the last
decade, a count that many, including former Mayor
Mike Bloomberg, says was wrong.
“I don’t think Queens was undercounted,” Beveridge said. “One possibility was that since they used
the base number from the prior Census. New York
was overcounted in 2000.”
He asserted that he didn’t believe the 2014 estimates were “a correction” of undercounting in 2010,
instead a representation of rapid growth during the
first few years of this decade.
Estimates based on race, ethnicity and gender
will be released later this year, so there is no specific
data on where immigrant populations are coming
from. Beveridge said Latin American immigration
remains strong in Queens, as is immigration from
South Asian countries like Pakistan and India.
But Beveridge warns that immigration statistics
could be fluid as people come and go over short periods of time.
“That’s what makes it so hard to predict,” he said.
“You might have a country that has a problem, and
a lot of those citizens come over here.”
He added that sometimes immigrants will return to
their home countries if the situation improves there.
In a statement, the Department of City Planning
said New York City’s unique situation makes Census numbers hard to keep track of.
“It is important to keep in mind that New York
City has a very dynamic population, with several
hundred thousand people coming and going each
year,” the agency said on its website. “This ‘churn’ has
long characterized the City, and represents a fluidity
that is difficult to characterize using the net migration
measures presented herein.”

Weddings can be expensive, so most brides
and grooms need to establish a budget before
they start planning the
wedding so they can
afford to get hitched.
Many couples are now
getting married later in life and paying
most, if not all of the
costs themselves, so
it’s important to start
budgeting sooner than
later.
The following tips
will help you and your
fiancé keep your costs
down so you can stay within your
wedding budget. They cover everything from the moment when you
say “Yes” to the second you say “I
do.”
1. Set a long engagement There are two benefits to having
an engagement of a year or longer.
First, it allows you to spread costs
over several paychecks. For example, if you get engaged this spring,
you can choose one month to put
a down payment on the reception
hall, and another month for purchasing the wedding dress and renting the tuxedo. A third month could
be used for purchasing honeymoon
trip tickets, and a fourth month for
the photographer’s down payment.
During your engagement you can

Food trends constantly evolve, reflecting society’s growing awareness
of how what we eat affects our health
and the environment. More Americans are choosing foods with an eye
to nutrition, natural
and locally sourced
ingredients and sustainable preparation
processes.
They’re not just
considering
those
factors for their own
plates either - they’re
thinking about them
when it comes to
choosing pet food, too.
“Trends in pet food have always
mirrored what’s happening in human
food,” says Geoff Bednar, senior scientist with Hill’s Pet Nutrition. “When
human foods became more processed
and mass produced with less-thanhealthy ingredients, the same thing
occurred in some pet foods. Now, as
consumer awareness shifts toward
more healthful options, Americans are
looking for the same positive qualities
in the food they feed their pets.”
A survey of grocery shoppers found
that many are conscious of the ingredients that go into the food they choose
and how that food is prepared. Twenty-eight percent of those surveyed by
the Hartman Group said they want
food and beverages that are minimally
processed, 26 percent look for ingredients they recognize, and 25 percent
seek foods with the shortest list of
ingredients. What’s
more, they’re willing
to purchase specialty
items; nearly 75 percent of consumers
say they made a specialty food purchase
last year, according to
Mintel Group Ltd., a
market research firm.
Pet food trends of
recent years have included corn and
grain-free foods, gluten-free options
and foods made with more natural ingredients, such as ancient grains. The
most recent trend - small-batch style
cooking - focuses on how pet food
processing is associated by consumers
with the quality and healthfulness of
the finished product. With the entry
into the marketplace of products like

The Catholic Charities’ Howard
Beach Senior Center continues to
recover more than two years after
Superstorm Sandy left it homeless
and financially struggling.
Like many residents and businesses in the Howard Beach community,
the senior center had to pick up the
pieces the storm had destroyed.
The center had to move from its
old location, the Rockwood Park
Jewish Center campus, to where it
is based now, at 155-55 Cross Bay
Blvd. on the first floor of the Peter J.
Striano Residence Apartments.
Judy Ascherman, the director of
the senior center, said the move has
been a positive for them on several
levels. The facilities are all new in
the center, with the exception of the
kitchen which is still not open due to
renovation. She said the location is
more convenient location than it was
before, and many of the seniors who
live in the apartments often come
downstairs and take advantage of
what it offers.
“I think this is a much better location for us,” she said. “There’s
no stairway, it is new, its beautifully
clean, it’s light and it’s gorgeous. We
do the best that we can.”
Ascherman added that some who
go to the center say they do like the
old location because the space was
a little bigger than now.
One positive addition to the center,
Aschermann said, was the addition
of a commuter van that takes the seniors from the facility to run errands or
for a leisure activity. The vans began
last summer, funded by Councilman
Eric Ulrich (R-Ozone Park).
She said the van allows the seniors to get out of the building for
a little while and go to places such
as the Gateway Shopping Center in
Brooklyn or to a local park to enjoy
the nice weather. They share the van
with other senior facilities within Ulrich’s District.
The senior center is looking to add
more activities for its members. In
particular, according to Ascherman,
they would like to add more dance
classes, as that is popular activity in
the center.
“We’re looking to see what the seniors want and we’re looking to add
those activities,” she said. The center currently has a dance class every
other week on Fridays.
Another one of Catholic Charities’
senior centers in the area, the Woodhaven-Richmond Hill Senior Center,
has been affected the past couple of
years by the partially collapsed building that housed the center.
Ascherman said that all the senior
centers in their network are in constant communication with each other
and they help out their neighbors in
Woodhaven.
“Everybody works together to
help each other out with whatever
we can,” she said. “They have done
a wonderful job over there considering what they’ve been through, it’s
just heartbreaking.”
The kitchen in the senior center
has still not opened more than two
years after the rest of the facility,
which was remolded from a hospital
to a senior residence. The center gets
their lunches catered by Russo’s On
The Bay and bagels donated to them
by Old Country Bagel, both nearby
on Cross Bay Boulevard.
Debra Hoffer, director of field operations for Catholic Charities, said
they hope to have the renovations
to its kitchen done soon and once
that is complete, they will begin to
serve meals cooked from its kitchen.
Lunch will continue to be catered by
Russo’s until then, she said.

Simple Ways To Reduce Heart Disease Risks
The greatest health risk women
face as they age is one society most
often thinks of as predominantly affecting men: heart disease.
“Heart disease is the number one
killer of women in the United States,”
notes Dr. Kevin O’Neil, chief medical officer for Brookdale, a leading
senior living company that operates
approximately 1,150 communities in
46 states. “Maybe one out of every
25 women may die of breast cancer,
but one out of every two women will
die from heart disease or stroke.”
Heart disease takes many forms,
O’Neil says, with coronary artery
disease being the most prevalent.
Plaque builds up in the arteries, constricting and sometimes blocking the
flow of blood to the heart. This can
damage the heart muscle over time
and even contribute to a heart attack
if a blockage occurs.
Many risk factors for heart disease
are particularly relevant to women.
Because the onset of heart disease
in women typically occurs a decade
or more after men, many women may
assume they’re safe. Yet other bodily
and environmental changes related
to aging can increase the risk, even
among women who appear healthy.
Risk factors of particular concern
to women include:
* Decreased estrogen after menopause - “Estrogen appears to have
a protective effect” for heart health,
O’Neil says. As estrogen levels fall,
the risk of heart disease can increase.
* Inactivity - Mobility and balance
issues may make it difficult for senior
women to maintain a healthy level of
activity.
* High blood pressure - As people age, blood pressure naturally
increases. Uncontrolled high blood
pressure is a significant risk factor
for heart disease.
According to the Mayo Clinic,
diabetes also increases heart disease risk more for women than men.
“Recent recommendations suggest
statin therapy, even in diabetics with
a normal cholesterol level, as statin
medications have benefits above
and beyond cholesterol-lowering,”
O’Neil said
Symptoms of heart disease and
especially heart attack can be very different for women than for men, O’Neil
says. “Heart disease symptoms in
women are often what we refer to as
‘atypical presentation.’ They may or
may not experience pain, but may instead feel short of breath, nauseated
or fatigued,” he says. “Often, we hear
heart attack symptoms described as
a feeling of pressure instead of pain.”
In fact, women are more likely than
men to experience symptoms such as
indigestion, heartburn, nausea and
vomiting, breathing problems, dizziness or light-headedness, or extreme
fatigue, the Mayo Clinic says.

Quitting cigarettes and exercising
daily are some ways seniors can
promote heart health.
When heart disease leads to damage to the heart and/or heart attack,
the damage can be severe and irreversible, O’Neil said.
Even if you have mobility and balance issues or other health problems,
it is still possible to significantly reduce
your risk of heart disease, he added.
* If you smoke, quit. Smoking
significantly increases your risks of
heart disease and stroke, and quitting delivers immediate benefits -
even if you’ve smoked for years.
* Get active - at least 30 minutes
of exercise daily. “Even if you’ve
never been active before or you
have problems that make traditional
forms of exercise difficult, you can
still improve your activity levels,”
O’Neil says. Women with balance
and mobility issues may benefit from
upper-body aerobics, swimming or
other pool therapies. Walking, balance training, tai chi, yoga and even
dancing can be helpful, offering benefits for both the body and brain. “I
always tell my patients, find something you’re going to enjoy and put
some variety into your exercise.”
* Monitor and control your blood
pressure. Women whose blood
pressure has historically been good
may need only to get it checked
once a year. Anyone who’s being treated for high blood pressure
should be monitored more regularly
by a health care provider, having
their blood pressure checked at
least every few months.
* Stay connected. “Depression increases heart disease risks,” O’Neil
notes. Staying in touch with loved
ones can help combat depression
and stimulate brain health.

Red Storm Return:
Mullin Comes Back To St. Johns As Coach

It’s a collision between past and
present.
Chris Mullin, arguably the greatest
player in St. John’s history, was introduced as the school’s 20th head coach
on Wednesday at Carnesecca Arena.
Mullin led St. John’s to the 1985 Final
Four, a season in which he was named
College Basketball Player of the Year.
He was the first player to score 2,000
points in school history. And the fans
are clamoring for the program to return
to the way it was in its glory days under
Lou Carnesecca.
“I still think St. John’s needs to be,
first and foremost, a New York City
team,” Mullin said. “We want to make
our campus proud, our alumni proud
and the whole city of New York proud
about St. John’s University.”
The local connection was a factor.
Steve Lavin brought respectability and
relevance to the school, but he was a
bit of an outsider. Now there is a New
Yorker on the sidelines and a legend as
the face of the program.
“President Eisenhower, after winning World War II, didn’t get that much
space in the papers,” joked Carnesecca.
The recruiting will be a major factor
for Mullin, specifically, recruiting locally.
“I guarantee you’ll see me at the public
school gyms, the Catholic school gyms
and the AAU gyms, all over New York
City,” Mullin said. “You don’t have to tell
me where they are, I played in all of them.
I know how to get in the backdoors. If
not, I know the janitor in the gym, so I’m
going to get there. I think it’s really important that we dominate New York.”
There have been examples of schools
bringing back a legend to coach, with
disappointing results. Matt Doherty at
North Carolina. Clyde Drexler at Houston. Mullin isn’t concerned though.
“They’re two different things,” Mul-
lin said. “My resume as a player is
separate from my career as a coach, and
that’s starting now. I don’t think one
will tarnish the other. Hopefully, more
importantly, promote it, make it even a
stronger resume.”
Can Mullin bring the program back
to where it was 30 years ago?
“No doubt about it,” Mullin said.
“That’s why I’m here.”
Bayside Boxer Triumphs At Golden Gloves

Stepping into the ring at the Barclay’s Center on April 2, 25-year-old
boxer Stylianos Kalamaras of Bayside
was confident he would defeat his opponent Franklin Johnson and take the title
as the 2015 New York Golden Gloves
Light Heavyweight Champion.
With five victories under his belt –
two by way of knock-out – Kalamaras
was the only contender to knock his
opponent to the canvas.
“I fight very aggressively,” Kalamaras
said. “In the amateurs, you don’t really
see people getting knocked out a lot.”
Throughout 14 of his fights, Kalamaras said not one of his opponents made
it out without bleeding or getting hit to
the floor. The main event, on April 2,
was no different.
“I feel amazing,” Kalamaras said
about winning this year’s Golden
Gloves tourney. “This is something
everyone dreams about.”
Kalamaras said winning the Golden
Gloves was something he had been
trying to do since 2011, when he was
eliminated by majority decision in the
tournament semifinals over a heavilyfavored opponent.
Before becoming a Golden Gloves
contender, Kalamaras was a three-time
junior Olympic gold medalist, five-time
national champion and six-time international champion in judo. By age 16, when
he decided to pick up the gloves for the
first time, he was already a natural.
“I don’t get nervous [fighting in front
of people],” Kalamaras said. “I knew I
would make it.”
Today, Kalamaras serves as an
engineer with the U.S. Navy and is a
full-time student at Queens College,
where he is pursuing a degree in exercise science and nutrition. He added
that winning this year’s Golden Gloves
Championship was a once in a lifetime
experience, which he hopes will open
more doors to future competitions.

Film Puts New Voices In Horror Genre

For a little more than a week, film
fans have the chance to support a new
horror film that will put underrepresented voices into the genre.
“Paralysis,” written and directed
by Rego Park-based filmmaker Robin
Shanea Williams, is a short film that
fans can contribute to online, at indiegogo.com/projects/paralysis, until
April 19. Following “Contamination,”
an award-winning thriller about a
woman with OCD shut inside her
apartment, “Paralysis” features a Black
photographer named Jessica who has a
sleeping disorder.
Williams, who counts Alfred Hitchcock and “The Twilight Zone” among
her influences, said it was important
for her to tell the film’s story through a
Black female character.
“Watching horror films growing up,
and watching them now even, there’s a
lot of great films but there’s definitely a
lack of diversity,” Williams said. “Very
few people of color, women, women
of color.”
According to a 2015 report from
UCLA’s Bunche Center, minorities in
Hollywood are “underrepresented on
every front,” from industry employment
to leadership positions to representation;
women are similarly underrepresented.
“To me, it’s great to always see yourself
on screen, and I feel like everyone deserves
that,” she continued. “It makes me very
excited about making a film like this.”
Throughout the movie, Jessica is
surrounded by terror and torment in
her new apartment, never sure whether
her sleeping disorder or supernatural
entities are to blame. The movie delves
further into the exploration of the
psyche that Williams began with “Contamination.”
“There’s something for everyone
with ‘Paralysis,’” Williams said, noting
that some of the major themes in her
body of work include isolation and
loneliness in New York, family ties and
mental illness.
As of press time, “Paralysis” has
earned about half of its funding goal.
Williams said she intends to start shooting the film in the fall.

New York media has been
abuzz about the coyote sighting
on the roof of L.I.C. Bar in Long
Island City last week.
We here at QConf are still
wondering about the unanswered questions.
How did he get to Queens?
Did he pay the toll to get over the
Triboro - sorry, Robert F. Kennedy - or Throgs Neck bridges
or did he take the Queensboro...
er…Ed Koch-Queensboro?
Perhaps he hopped on a ferry or

politician will stay in Albany,
but we wonder if there would
ever be two den Dekkers in
Washington.
From the hallways of
Queens high schools to some
of the City’s most popular
venues, the punk- and metalinspired band Single Red Cent
has developed their homegrown, high-energy sound
over years of practice and
performance.
Vocalist Oscar Arias, a
Bellerose native, and guitarist
James Pagano, who grew up
in Flushing, met at Benjamin
Cardozo High School in Bayside, and played in a series of
bands until meeting drummer
Eri Kurshan in 2010.
“[James and I] know each
other for so long, and when
we got the drummer, it just
kind of clicked,” Arias said.
“We’re not that serious – I’m
kind of a goofball and so is
the drummer, a little bit, so
we have a lot of fun even just
hanging out.”
In Single Red Cent’s early
days, Arias said, “we were
kind of all over the place.”
The group worked to hone and
meld their sound, ultimately
shifting genres slightly.
“I think we started off a little
more alternative sounding,
and then as we’re progressing, it’s getting a little harder
and faster and bluesier,” he
explained.
The band continues to
progress, never completely
abandoning the songwriting
process.
“We have songs that are
still years old that we’re still
doing little tweaks to,” Arias
said. “A song is never 100
percent finished for us, just
because everyone’s kind of
perfecting in their own little
way.”
According to Arias, the
three band members bring a diverse set of musical influences
to the songwriting process.
Joe Jackson, Elvis Costello
and AC/DC are all important
to him and to James, while
he and Kurshan are “both big
Metallica and Queens of the
Stone Age fans,” he said.
On stage, the band members play conversationally,
sometimes in call-and-response, demonstrating comfort with their instruments
and a variety of beats and
melodies.
Thematically, their songs
deal largely with culture and
social issues, often with humor
and witty lyrics.
As a musician, Arias said
he hopes to express “freedom, being who you are, the
tension that arises from what
you want and what's expected,
recognizing BS without getting
too bogged down by it.”
“If I had to some it up in one
word: live!” he added.
The band’s passion for life
comes through in their strong
and dynamic performance
style.
“The songs are written that
way so we just play them with
a lot of energy,” Arias said.
“Beer helps. But really, playing
onstage is a huge adrenaline
rush and we try to get that
across.”
With one demo already
released, Arias said the band
is looking to record again in the
future. To hear Single Red Cent
live this spring, music fans can
stop by the Grand Victory in
Brooklyn on April 14.
