How to make an origami bird
Take a perfectly square piece of paper.
Fold it in half to form a rectangle and half again to form a square. Make
sure your folds are firmly done.
Unfold your paper and fold this time across the diagonal to form a
triangle. Then fold again to form a smaller triangle.
Unfold your paper and fold from
one corner to one of the centre
diagonal folds, as though you
were making a paper aeroplane.
Repeat the other side.
Repeat with all for corners until
you have a clear pattern of folds
(see diagram on the far right).
Begin to push the four
points marked with a red
dot on the picture far
left, using your folds to
make a four-sided star
shape....
...fold the lines marked
with red lines on the
picture on the left
INWARDS until you are left with a kite shape.
With your kite shape, pull the corners
marked with a red dot (right) out and
turn your kite inside out, so that the
two flat faces of the new kite shape are
the ones which were creased inwards
before...

... your kite shape will LOOK the same
as it did, but with two different flat
faces. (see 4)
Now pull one of
the points at the
base of the kite
shape upwards to
form the shape in
the picture on the
left. (5 & 6)

Turn your shape
around and do
the same on the

Pull the two sections apart and down to make the
shape above (11).
To make the beak, pinch the neck of the bird and
pull the point down and fold over the top of the neck
section (12).
Pull up the wings on each side (14).
Slightly curve the inside of the wings gently (15), and pinch the front of the bird’s breast. Holding
firmly, gently pull the tail and the bird should flap its wings! Now you can decorate your bird....
Again, turn
your shape
inside out,
so that you
end up with
a diamond
shape, but
with two split
sections at the
top (see 9 and
10)
