Two years to go
Children from Hackney give four-times Olympic gold medalist Michael Johnson a run for his money on the London 2012 Olympic Park race track
LOCAL youngsters made
the headlines as they
helped mark two years to
go until London 2012.
The Hackney group joined
Olympians and Paralympians
past and present, including
cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, swimmer
Ellie Simmonds, hurdler Sally
Gunnell, middle distance
runner Seb Coe (who led
London’s bid for the 2012
Games) and US sprinter
Michael Johnson to tour the
Olympic Stadium, where they
were interviewed by the BBC,
and even got a chance to race
the 400m world record holder
down the home straight.

GREEN WITH PRIDE
By
Gracia Douglas
HERE were
celebrations when
Hackney was
awarded three new
Green Flags, which
recognise the UK’s best
green spaces.
National environmental
charity Keep Britain Tidy
awarded the prestigious
flags to parks in Hackney,
which brings the total in
the borough to 12 –
among the highest in
London. The new Green
Flag parks are Well Street
Common, E9; Cassland
T
Gardens, E9; and Clapton
Square, E5.
These are in addition to
the nine sites that have
retained Green Flag status
in 2010. St John’s
Churchyard, E8 has also
kept its status as a Green
Heritage site, one of only
13 in London.
The Council celebrated
the announcement at Well
Street Common, where
Cllr Jonathan McShane,
Cabinet Member for
Community Services
proudly raised one of the
latest Green Flags.
He said: “Five years ago
Hackney only had one
award for its parks; now
we have 12. This is a
wonderful achievement
that demonstrates how
far we have come in
making sure that
residents and visitors have
access to the welcoming,
safe, clean and pleasant

areas they deserve.
Congratulations to the
staff, user groups and
local organisations who
have worked so hard to
look after our valuable
green spaces.”
St Mary’s Secret
Garden, E2, achieved a
Green Pennant award –
given to community and
voluntary groups who
successfully manage their
own public spaces.
East Reservoir
Community Garden, run
by London Wildlife Trust;
and Hackney Community
Tree Nursery and Edible
Forest Garden, run
by Hackney Marshes
User Group also retained
their pennants.
The award scheme is
the national standard for
parks and green spaces in
England and Wales.
It encourages a high
level of environmental
standards, creating a
benchmark of excellence.
To be eligible for an
award, parks must also
submit a five-year plan
for continued
maintenance and
improvement.

HACKNEY Wick is set to receive a £1million investment from
the Big Lottery Fund (BIG).
It will be one of the first 50 places in the country to benefit
from the funding, earmarked to improve regional
neighbourhoods. An independent charitable trust will be set
up to run the programme, and BIG is looking for individuals
and community groups to get involved and help run it.
The funds will not be available until autumn 2011, but in the
meantime, the Council will be working with local people and
BIG over the coming year to identify which projects the
money could be spent on.
Cllr Jonathan McShane, Cabinet Member for Community
Services, said: “We are delighted that Hackney Wick is due
to receive this substantial cash injection to help pay for the
community projects and initiatives that residents most want
to see happening on their doorsteps.”
BIG plans to invest up to £200million over the next decade
to help regenerate 150 urban and rural neighbourhoods.
The deadline to apply to join the Hackney Wick trust is 12
August. For more info, visit: www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/

COUNCILLOR Maureen Middleton of
New River Ward, North Hackney, has
passed away after suffering a heart
attack. She was 68.
First elected as a councillor in 1998,
Cllr Middleton was committed to
representing the borough and highly
valued by her constituents.
She served on many committees during her time as a
councillor, and following the 2010 election was a member
of the Health in Hackney Scrutiny Commission; Inner North
East London Joint Overview & Scrutiny Commission for
Health; Living in Hackney Scrutiny Commission; and North
East Neighbourhood Committee.
Councillors and the Mayor of Hackney expressed their
regret at the death of Cllr Middleton, and sent their
condolences to her friends and family, paying tribute
to her years of work in her local community and
tireless commitment to taking up cases on behalf of
her constituents.
A by-election for New River ward will be held in the near
future. See the next edition of Hackney Today for details.

Be part of a town centre farm
During July, HCC students did work experience at Woodberry Down,
carrying out repairs with materials from Berkeley Homes, and facilities
provided by Mulalley, a contractor carrying out repairs for existing homes
opportunities. Zaynab
Mahmoud, 26, is a trainee
electrician and mother-oftwo living at Woodberry
Down. She said: “I’m
almost there, almost
qualified, and am looking
for employment – and I’d
never be late for work
here as I live in the
next block.”
The event was
organised by Berkeley

Woodberry Works.
RESIDENTS are invited to roll up their sleeves and help
transform an empty shop in Dalston into a working farm.
Eco-designers Something & Son will create Farm:Shop at
20 Dalston Lane, E8, and are looking for volunteers to get
stuck in until the grand opening in September.
Mini fish farms, rooftop chicken coops and an indoor
'hydroponic' allotment are among the innovations
volunteers will help to create.
Farm:Shop is the second in a series of projects supported
by the Council to bring empty shops back to life.
The projects are financed by Government funding
awarded to the Council, and are designed to
provide temporary activities that will benefit
residents and visitors.
Farm volunteer days will run every
Saturday at 20 Dalston Lane, E8, from
10am-7pm, until 18 September. For info

Thinking
outside the
record box
By
Marcel Reinard
T’S just as well the
inexhaustible music
encyclopaedia locked
in the vaults of Gilles
Peterson’s head has no
bearing on his actual record
collection in N4.
After years of seeking
out just about every genre
and sub-genre, from 1950s
folk to bedroom dub-step,
the BBC Radio 1 DJ finally
lost the battle with his everincreasing horde of vinyl.
“I was living on
Brownswood Road, but it
was when I had children
and the collection was
too big that we moved to
Stoke Newington. Now I
live there and walk across
Clissold Park to get to the
studio,” he says.
The old house is also the
base of his new company
Brownswood Recordings.
Twenty-five years at the
top has furnished him a
not undeserved mantle as
a music taste-maker and
a risk-taker tapping into
artists working outside
conventions. That’s not to
say he doesn’t know a good
chart tune when he hears
one: the back catalogue of
artists he produced became
the cornerstone of UK
I
soul in the early 1990s –
Jamiroquai, Brand New
Heavies, Incognito and
Young Disciples.
He began his career on
pirate stations in the 1980s,
spinning records at London
soul nights, one of many
being Special Branch at
the Royal Oak in South
London with the rest of the
capital’s DJ royalty.
“

“I’d play upstairs and
downstairs it was Danny
Rampling, Paul Oakenfold
and Nicky Holloway. That
lasted four years, a very
important weekly club. Out
of it came nearly everything
that we have today in the
UK,” he claims.
His name became
synonymous with acid
jazz, a warped, electronic
take on jazz funk. It started
as ‘just a joke’, his and a
friend’s answer to 1980s
acid house.
He says: “It was a great
time, but after two years I
was beginning to feel the

sound, the music, and acid
jazz name was ghetto-ising
itself, it was becoming a
mod thing, a retro thing.”
Setting up his own
Talkin’ Loud label – a name
taken from his Camden
club night – with Norman
Jay, he had numerable
successes along the musical
spectrum. Legal stations
picked up on his talent too
and his CV includes Jazz
FM – before his show was
axed for ‘inappropriate’
music and his anti-war
comments during the first
Gulf War in 1991 – Kiss
FM when it first received its
licence, and the BBC.
And he still presents the
Radio 1 Worldwide show,
currently in its tenth year.
Not bad for someone who
began his career setting
up his own station as a
teenager with an aerial
suspended between a tree
and a phone box.
Now in Hackney for 20
years, he continues to be
amazed by the music on
offer locally.
“I didn’t think there was
much of a music scene here
for ages, but obviously now
it’s a complete explosion,
it’s incredible, it’s never
been better, whether
it’s Stoke Newington,
Shoreditch or Dalston,
Hackney is unbelievable; I
couldn’t be living in a better
part of the world right now,
let alone London.
“The main thing is just
what’s happening with the
exposure – it’s gone from
Shoreditch and now it’s
hitting Stoke Newington
and you’ve got places like
Café Oto in Dalston and all
DJ Gilles Peterson has been based in Hackney for 20 years
these great places,” he says.
His new big project
is Havana Cultura: a
collaboration of previously
unknown Cuban singers
and rappers, himself and
talented pianist Roberto
Fonseca.
“There weren’t that
many people taking risks
in Cuba. Obviously there
are brilliant musicians, but
it’s all quite safe and what
you would expect. For me
it’s about finding the cracks
between the pavement to
find where the real radicals
were living,” he adds.
Now touring with a
selection of the artists
featured on the album, in
typical style, he’s already
looking to the next
project.
He says:“I want to get
some new producers from
around the world and get
Cuban vocalists. People
like Diplo; getting the
cutting edge producers of
electronic music into Cuba
to spend time recording
stuff with a lot of these
artists and see what comes
out of the experiment.”
With such a successful
career, it’s hard to pin him
down on the highlights:
“I’ve been able to play
everywhere – it’s all good.
I’ve met all my heroes,
though I still need to do
an interview with Herbie
Hancock. I haven’t spent
time with him yet.
“It really doesn’t feel like
25 years, I’m still as active
as I ever was,” he says.

Around the world
A CELEBRATION of culture from across
the world has taken place at Whitmore
Primary School in N1.
For its international afternoon,
pupils, teachers and parents
entertained guests with
Turkish dancing, a fashion
show, steel band and choir
performance. There was
also a routine from
SPLATs circus skills
company and music
from DJ Devon.
Hannah Robertson, one of the organisers of the 9 July event,
said: “We had food stalls from Africa, Turkey, India and an
English cake stall, which all went down very well.
“Everyone found it interesting experiencing little bits from
the cultures of their fellow pupils. We made over £600 for
school funds, which was also a great plus to the day.”

THE founder of one of the largest

generation of high flyers.
Former Capita Group chairman
Rod Aldridge (right) headed a
GCSE Business Studies lesson at
the school, focusing on how the
new budget will affect the economy and
their own lives.
Rod encouraged academic attainment and advised
pupils to keep an open mind when exploring careers.
He also backed entrepreneurship as providing
opportunities for personal and economic growth.
“If they take away the message that they can succeed
by applying an entrepreneurial mindset to their lives,
then I will feel the session was worthwhile,” he said.
Retiring from Capita four years ago, Rod set up The Aldridge
Foundation, which aims to inspire young people through
education and entrepreneurship.
The visit was organised by educational charity Teach First.
Up for debate
ASPECTS of voting reform were keenly argued during a
debating competition involving A-level students from
Hackney Community College.
Two teams of three pitted their wits against each other in a
competition that focused on ways to increase voter
participation: reducing the voting age to 16; allowing nonUK citizens the right to vote; and making voting compulsory.
The event was organised by UBS and was the culmination
of a four-week internship programme at the financial
company. Before the 21 July contest, held at UBS’ city
offices, both teams attended a series of training sessions on
presentation, advocacy and negotiation skills.
Sneh Brahmbhatt, whose team helped convince the
audience to disagree with compulsory voting and votes
for non-UK citizens, was chosen by judges as the
best speaker.

Dreaming of Hot Chip
REVIEW
Hackney-born Paloma Faith (above) and the merry-go-round (below)
By Marcel Reinard
Continued from p17
The festival is now in its eighth year and
boasted a roster – including Hot Chip – of
Dizzee Rascal, Paloma Faith and the original
art rockers Roxy Music. Sunday arguably
focused more on disco with Chromeo,
Peaches, Cut Copy, Horse Meat Disco, Jocelyn
Brown and irrepressible headliner Grace
Jones. Many have commented on her
youthful appearance having little bearing to
her age of 61, but her star quality surpasses
any superficial references, as does the back
catalogue of exceptionally good dub and funk.
She performs better than many of her
contemporaries could dream of, and even
Hot Chip summoned up all of their collective
emotions to nod their heads in
quiet appreciation.

Hot from the street
REVIEW
Staff Benda Bilili
By Miranda Yates
Staff Benda Bilili, Hackney Empire, Mare
Street, E8, 20 July
HOT, hot, hot, both inside the sweltering
Empire and on the stage as this Congolese
band got into their groove.
The music was utterly relentless, tirelessly
dynamic, and layered in earthiness with vocal
harmonies that cut a clear pathway through
all the crazy stuff.
Apparently Benda Bilili’s tunes come straight
off the streets of the Congo, and it’s true
these former street-dwellers do exude a truly
exotic energy that’s a far melodic cry from
Mare Street – even at 28 degrees.
What’s served up is witty stuff; a blend of
roots music, blues and Cuban drum rhythms
that will only ever allow you to leave the
dance floor when you can barely breathe your
fifth request for an encore.
The name ‘Staff Benda Bilili’ means ‘look
beyond appearances’, a reference to the
band’s disabilities – all the musicians had
polio as children, and appear on stage in
wheelchairs and on crutches, in hats and
in a line across the stage that never
stopped dancing.
The musicians – who inspired a French
documentary about their lives and appeared
at the Cannes Film Festival to a standing
ovation – have an uncanny ability to make
their disabilities appear and disappear, as the
show goes on.
When one singer gets out of his wheelchair
we’re reminded; but when he dances like
there’s no tomorrow, down low on the
stage floor, you stop seeing, until he jumps
back into the chair.
What we have in Staff Benda Bilili is wise
musicians in wicked control of their audience
– and don’t they just love it.

The two gentlemen in action
By Marcel Reinard
Vakomana Vaviri Ve Zimbabwe , Rich
Mix, Bethnal Green Rd, E1, 13-14 August
Full of humour and sparkle, a new

Vakomana Vaviri Ve Zimbabwe – like the
original text, the Two Gentlemen of Verona –

compete for the love of the same woman.

jealousy, each don disguises and cultivate

At mobile performance
venue The Lift, in Canning

Sports celebration
THE sporting achievements of young people, coaches and
clubs were celebrated at the annual Hackney Youth Sport
Fund Awards.
The event, organised by the Council’s Leisure & Physical
Activity Team, showcased an array of talent, from
grassroots to those representing Great Britain.
In total, 34 applicants received funding in a variety
of sports ranging from fencing to girls rugby to sitting
volleyball.
Omarie Mears, 16, was one of the young people who were
presented with an award by Mayor of Hackney, Jules Pipe.
The talented young weightlifter attends Cardinal Pole

the weightlifting gold at this year’s

Road safety and red carpets
MMC group members at the premier
A HOST of young people
turned out for the
premiere of a film that
aims to help communicate
road safety messages.
‘Concrete Dreams’ was
shown to an audience of
invited guests at the Arcola
Theatre on 30 July. MMC,
a group of young people
from Hackney, aged 15 to
19, proudly premiered the
film they have produced,
directed and starred in.
Production assistant,
Ethan May, explained the
decision for making a film
for people their own age:
“It started with statistics.
We did a survey of over
200 young people from
two different schools in
Hackney and realised that
only 14 per cent actually
remember the road safety
messages aimed at them.”
The 15-minute film is
intended to be used by
schools, community
organisations and youth
groups, and will also be
put on YouTube and
Facebook.
‘Concrete Dreams’ is the
result of a project
organised by the Council’s

an updated ‘feeding your

The NHS and Council
joint director of public
health, Dr Lesley

“Breastfeeding can be a

women, and we recognise
it can take time to
establish a regular feeding

“We want to make sure

RUNNERS from Headway East London have raised £2,680
at this year’s Asics British 10k run – with one describing the
experience as a chance to ‘give something back’ to the
brain injury charity.
Volunteers, supporters and two brain injury survivors faced
tough conditions and tougher competition in their efforts for
Headway on a hot 11 July.
Matt, a Hackney resident who sustained a brain injury two
years ago, said: “I was super nervous before the run. The
responsibility of sponsorship was weighing heavily upon my
shoulders, but in the end it was a blast.”
Headway East London supports people affected by acquired
brain injury and the money raised will contribute to physical
therapies to help people reach their goal of independence.
Matt added: “I raised some money for Headway East
London who have consistently supported me following a
head injury in 2008. In that time I’ve seen the work they do
and wanted to be able to give something back.”

Health survey results
PROPOSALS to reorganise health services in North East
London have received broad support from residents.
These include the principle of separating planned and
emergency surgery, and separating
children’s and adults’ A&E
departments.
During the Health For North-East
London survey, documents were
distributed to around 10,000 people
outlining the proposals developed
by patients, doctors, nurses and
other health care professionals on Thousands of people had
how services across the area
their say on proposals
could be improved.
More than 3,000 residents and organisations responded to
the four-month long consultation, which ended in March.
The results were published last month.
The news coincides with the Government’s instruction that
all NHS health trusts should review their reorganisation
proposals with GPs and local authorities to further test
regional support. Health For North East London added no
decision will be made on any of the proposals until this
happens and feedback has been reviewed.

Hackney Council is committed to improving services,
increasing opportunities for all, and making
a safer, cleaner, greener borough. Here we focus on
a service that helps to make this possible:
SUPPORTING THE
HELPING HANDS
Frances Harve, Counselling
Support Officer
Frances has been supporting
CRT volunteers, who are a
key part of the team, for eight
years. She trains them in
communication, as well as
how to help older people
suffering from abuse,
bereavement and loss.
She also provides emotional
back-up. Frances is proud to
be part of the recruitment
process for CRT volunteers
and feels lucky to regularly
meet people who are willing
to go that extra mile for
Hackney’s older people.
Frances also works with
community organisations to
deliver training on dementia,
mental health, emergency
first aid and self
management.
She said: “I enjoy the
challenges in my role and the
rewarding working
relationships I have
developed with my
colleagues and the
volunteers.
“But most importantly, I enjoy
the benefits and the joy that
our dedicated volunteers
bring to the older people who
would have been lonely and
socially excluded in the
community without the CRT.”

Cllr Demirci tries out one of
the new hire bikes
LONDON’S newest
transport system has
opened for business.
To use the Barclays Cycle
Hire Scheme during
August, residents need to
register as a member before
receiving a key to unlock
the bikes. The first users
will show which areas the
bikes are most used in. The
scheme will open to casual
pay-as-you-go users later
this year.
The key costs £3 and
there are membership fees
of £1 for 24-hours; £5 for
seven days; and £45 for a
year. There is also an access
fee for the time the bike is
used during the day, with
the first 30 minutes of any
journey being free.
People using the bikes
will be able to pick up and
drop off one of the 6,000
hire bicycles at around 400
locations in central
London, 24-hours a day.
Cllr Feryal Demirci,
Cabinet Member for
Neighbourhoods, headed
to Shoreditch High Street –
one of 14 Hackney
docking points – to give
the scheme a try. She said:
“It’s great this scheme is
finally off the ground. I
know many people in the
borough are eager to sign
up, so they can start
cycling. I certainly enjoyed
giving one of the bikes a
road test and I’m looking
forward to doing it again
in the near future.”

HACKNEY City Farm has unveiled its own cycle rental
scheme – just for commuters using the number 55 bus.
Those more used to waiting at Hackney Road stops near
the farm – at Warner Place, Queensbridge Road, and
Pritchard Road – can hire a bike for a day, for the same
price as a bus fare.
The farm’s Environment and Enterprise Manager, Gustavo
Montes de Oca, said: “A lot of it came from personal
experience when I had to get the bus. In rush hour there
can be huge queues, and we’re right next to a major cycle
route so it just made sense.”
Currently six hybrid bikes are available, all with pannier
racks, shock absorbers and mud and chain guards.
The farm also provides locks, helmets and ‘bike buddies’ –
experienced cyclists who can help new riders gain
confidence on the road. Gustavo added the farm is still
looking for more experienced riders to volunteer for this
part of the scheme.
Bus Stop Cycle Start is funded by the Community Cycling
Fund for London, which gave the farm a £4,933 grant in
June to help different community groups get on their bikes.

Green buses win prizes
LONDON Buses has won the Low Carbon Champion Award
for reducing carbon (CO2) emissions in its fleet.
The company, which forms part of Transport for London
(TfL), was recognised in the bus category by Low Carbon
Vehicle Partnership for its commitment to greener travel in
the capital. Judges praised TfL as a whole for its work
getting low CO2 buses used nationally.
There are currently 56 hybrid buses – powered
by diesel and an electric motor –
operating in London, with the first
introduced in February 2006. In
2012, the new hybrid
Routemasters (left) will come into
service to form part of the 300
other hybrids set to be in use by
this date.
The LowCVP Low Carbon
Champion Awards recognise best
practice in vehicle
manufacturers, fuel suppliers,
fleet operators and developers of
products and services that
reduce greenhouse gases from
the road transport sector.

Job Profile
Murthy Balakrishnan
Trading Standards Manager, talks to Hackney Today about
the Senior/Principal Commercial Standards Officer role
Why is the Trading
Standards Team a good
place to work?
The work we do is not only
varied and interesting, but it is
also incredibly rewarding.
Everyone feels annoyed when
they hear about people being
ripped off, and we can
practically help residents.
The team is tight-knit, highly
motivated and professional
and everyone is really
supportive. We all have our
own areas of expertise and all
officers are given the
opportunity to explore and
research their area.
What makes this a
rewarding job?
It’s really satisfying to
empower residents to make
informed purchasing
decisions in a borough that
has such a diverse population.
The service puts out warnings
and pre-shopping advice and
reacts very quickly to issues.
It’s also rewarding to give
high-quality trader advice to
small businesses in the
borough. Feedback has been
very positive. The job can be
exciting, but it also has a
problem-solving side that is
really satisfying.
What are the main
challenges?
One of the key challenges is
meeting the needs of hard to
reach communities in
Hackney who may have
concerns, but don’t know who
to contact for help. We also
need to come up with new
ways to use the resources
that we have effectively, and
balance nationally-driven
projects and policies with
local needs.
What attributes will the
successful candidate have?
They will need to be very
resourceful, a good team
player and someone who can
demonstrate that they
are both innovative and
practical, with excellent
problem solving skills.
They should have experience
in most areas of Trading
Standards work and be adept
at managing a challenging
workload. They’ll need to be
flexible and work unsociable
hours on occasions.

Serpil Dogan, 24, from Hackney, found it difficult to find employment to meet her
childcare needs. With no previous experience, she decided to test her skills in the food
and hospitality industry after her daughter, who is now six, started school.
Serpil is now an apprentice chef training in the kitchen, as well as picking up some
front of house skills. She is enjoying learning how to cook food from different cultures,
and working with the rest of the kitchen staff.
Serpil said: “Working at the Hoxton Apprentice has really widened my knowledge of
the food industry; there is so much I didn’t know. I also feel more confident talking and
working with people and my communication skills have improved.”
Her ambition is to own her own restaurant serving a mixture of British and Turkish

The Mayor & Councillors
Councillors are elected by Hackney
residents and serve for four years.
The last borough elections were in
May 2010.
Councillors have a range of
responsibilites, including helping to
oversee the Council and its services.
They hold advice surgeries where
residents can meet their local
representative and ask them to take up
issues that may be of concern.
Generally they can help with Council
related matters, but if the issue is the
responsibility of another person or
organisation, councillors can often point
people in the right direction and tell
residents who they need to see.
Hackney has 57 councillors
representing areas called wards –
illustrated in the map opposite.
To check which councillor covers your area, or confirm surgery times, call: 020 8356 3373.
