SUBVETS 50th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
Return to your Submarine Roots! — Come celebrate the USSVI Groton Base 50th
Anniversary Weekend where it all started. Groton Base the “First and Finest”, is proud
to host the annual Anniversary Weekend. It will be held in the “Submarine Capital of
the World”, Groton CT 1-3 May 2014. This event is a great opportunity for all submariners to come back to where we all got started, to see the advances we have made in
Submarine technology, and to perpetuate the memories of all Submariners.
To save space in the newsletter, and to save on the cost of printing, you can get a
copy of the Registration form at the clubhouse on the Anniversary Web Page at http://
subvetsgroton.org/anniversary, or by contacting either the Base Commander, Vice Commander, or House Committee Chairman at the email addresses/telephone numbers provided in this newsletter.
In addition to celebrating the Anniversary of our great organization and having a
great time in sharing camaraderie with our Shipmates, the other purpose of this event
is to serve as the principal fundraiser for the Groton Base Scholarship program. There
are opportunities to provide sponsorships, and donations on the registration form. We
will also be generating a program book as another fundraiser for this event. The program book is discussed elsewhere in this newsletter.
Although we are still in the planning stages we have registration forms available
as indicated above. The basic Schedule of Events is listed on the SUBVETS website.
Other additional events may be added as we move down the road.

Clubhouse Cleanup
Our club gets cleaned thanks to our shipmates on the Saturday Morning Cleanup Crew who continually donate
time every weekend to clean our clubhouse and keep it looking good for our members and guests.
The club belongs to the membership, but cleanup of the club is done by only a small handful of hard-working, dedicated volunteers. We can always use more volunteers on a regular basis to clean. You don’t have to be there every
Saturday, just when you can.
Cleanup starts around 7am and is usually completed by 10am for our 11am opening.
The clubhouse belongs to the membership, and at Groton Base we are very fortunate in that we are the only
USSVI Base with its own clubhouse, even 48 years after the organization was formed. That is special.
Please pitch in to keep your club clean. If the membership does not clean the clubhouse, it does not get cleaned.
Our fall field day was successful even though there were only 13 volunteers. Thanks to Dale MacKay and his
grandson Joseph, Charlie McMullin, Obie Hill, Chris Callahan, Frank Rowe, Eric and Nathaniel Mathley, Bob
Bell, Dee and John Carcioppolo, Jeff Walsh and Stan Mathis.

Commander’s Corner
As you all know we have had some turmoil over the last few months and we have taken it in
stride, and are on the road to recovery for ourselves and the Organization. It was due to many
things but this is not the forum to discuss it. Many of you heard various rumors and other discussions that have prompted you to question why you joined this Organization in the first place. You
joined it because you chose to join the Navy and then our Submarine force. It was volunteer then
and it is volunteer now. You worked harder than most in the Navy to get qualified in a warfare
group that absolutely depends on each other for their return to homeport where their loved ones
were waiting. Now that most of us do not have to go to sea we can sit around and laugh about the
good times and the not so good times because we all were out there together. You joined USSVI
for the camaraderie that we always enjoy when submariners get together. It was “To perpetuate the memory of
our shipmates….” Groton Base is the First and Finest and we shall continue to be same.
As we continue into the next quarter of this year remember we have a number of activities planned and at times
the committees that are responsible for the planning and execution of these tasks require your help accomplish
same. It may be only one event or a day, but if spread out among our membership all of our activities will be successful.
First on our plate is the renewal of your membership. If you haven’t renewed your dues – Your late! We have to
get these processed immediately.
We have dinners planned for January, February & March. See the calendar of events for these dates. I hope you
will plan your other family activities to include these events. It’s your Organization.
Our Thanksgiving/Caring and Sharing Program was again a great success. We fed close to a thousand people
between meals on wheels and our guests at the clubhouse. We made significant donations back to the community
using the surplus funds. The team, here in Groton and from as far away as Long Island, NY, have served USSVI
in preserving our creed to “Perpetuate the memory of our shipmates...” With several of our guests volunteering to
take meals to known veterans not comfortable in requesting a meal or two, and another stopping what appeared
to be a disabled veteran in a super market and inviting him and his family for a take-out meal. This is what Subvets is about; veterans helping veterans, community helping community.
In addition to Thanksgiving, November was a busy month. We supported the Red, White and Blue Mass at the
Cathedral in Norwich, several Veterans events, including our Veterans Day Memorial Service where we remembered our shipmates on eternal patrol. I thank the membership for their dedication to our Organization and for
their support.
In recent weeks it has become apparent that numerous members of Groton Base have chosen to unsubscribe
from our weekly broadcasts and occasional intermediate broadcasts. I have attempted to keep the number of
broadcasts to two per week to prevent this from happening. The broadcasts are to keep this Base informed of
what is going on so that you might want to participate in one of the many events we plan for the year. It is like
any other news cast; if you do not like it turn it off/delete it, but do not destroy the medium that transmitted it.
These broadcasts provide information in the local area.
Shortly, we will begin a new year—a year of significant events for USSVI. It’s our Golden Anniversary and we
become a member of the Holland Club, too. There will be many events across this great nation of ours at every
Base and District. We are 50 years young! With fellow members I have become accustomed to, it will be continue
to be great to be a part of this organization. Like any organization people will have differences of opinion, but we
are Brothers Of The Phin, and our fellowship will continue.
This year is another election year. You will be electing our Vice Commander and Secretary. Our choice was to
stagger our election process to maintain some continuity in our E-Board. If you need to see changes in our Base
consider running for one of these elected offices. It is time for others in the membership to step to the plate and
take the reins of our great Base.
For those of you with children seeking higher education consider our scholarship programs. Nationals program
started in October and continues to receive applications until April 15th, and Groton Base’s program will commence receiving applications in mid-February. Please assist your children with these applications. It saves you
money and helps these young people become the individuals we would like them to be. The more education they
have, the better decisions they will make in their lives.
I have talked enough. Keep an eye on the Base Calendar of Events on our webpage. There is so much going on
that I open the webpage with the calendar first before I get side tracked.
Until next quarter, or the next broadcast, be safe this Winter.

Chaplain’s Offerings—Tom Russell, Base Chaplain
Much of the reporting
from the chaplain have
been on Honors Services, Eternal Patrols,
and hospital visits, but
that is only half of
what the chaplain, his
alternates, and his volunteers have been doing. It's funny
how some things turn out when you
take them from the beginning.
For instance, just consider the number of SUBVET chaplain events
that have been created from just a
single source. There are the Homecoming events we take part in, welcoming the deployers and their submarines home from six month deployments overseas. Next are the
two historic Remembrance Ceremonies that we do, September 11th for
the terrorist air attacks in NY, the
Pentagon and PA, and December 7th
for the Japanese air attacks on
Pearl Harbor, HI.
Additionally,
support is provided for the SUBVET Memorial Day Ceremony with
21 minute guns of mourning.
All of this began with a muzzle
loading brass cannon built by my
grandfather and a request from
Groton to welcome cruise ships to
New London. We had the cannon.
And we fired it faithfully. The
growth occurred with gun interest
from fellow vets and the introduction of two Winchester 10 gauge
black powder blank saluting cannons, Navy models with brass barrels. All the rest of it came with
the thoughts of where and when
can we fire the cannons? Praise
the Lord and pass the ammunition!
I need to expand on the chaplain's
alternates, the two willing and capable men who make the chaplain's
duties available at a moment's notice, every day of the year. Alternate Chaplain Jack Gallimore fills
a spot that makes this chaplain job
doable. The Honors Services alone
bring Jack to the fore with Eternal
Patrol Certificates for the families,
mailed out if necessary, but always
on hand for the service. If I am
away, Jack picks up the whole load
and has never failed. The whole
load is contacting the family and
funeral home, calling the troops for
a service, and doing the service.
Being a COB certainly reflects his
capability and leadership in handling whatever comes up. On top of
that, Jack is also the chaplain for
SUBVETS WWII in our area.
Our second Alternate Chaplain is
Norm Kuzel, another dedicated
stand in if help is needed. Norm
has already done an Honors Service
when neither Jack nor myself were
available and it went off like clockwork. Norm has his Ella Mae as a
right hand and the two of them are
inseparable. He has all the services
we do, word for word, and he could
do a sermon off the cuff if he had to.
A dedicated shipmate and willing to
answer the call whenever he is
needed, except from January to
April.
We're here for you and yours and it
is our privilege to serve.
Cheers to all and blessings on thee,
Tom Russell, Chaplain SVGB

the U.S. SUBVETS WWII National Submarine Memorial East. This Memorial Service will be held in commemoration of the 51st Anniversary of the loss of USS THRESHER (SSN 593) and the 114th Birthday of the
Submarine Force. The Memorial Service will include the Tolling of the Boats. In the event of inclement weather the Memorial Service will be moved indoors at the Groton Municipal Building on Meridian Street in the
City of Groton.
We will also have a Memorial Service on 03 May as part of the SUBVETS Anniversary Celebration starting
at 1:00 pm (Guest Speaker to be determined) and on Monday 27 May for Memorial Day at 12:00 am (Guest
Speaker to be determined).
We hope that you will be able to join us for one or all of these Memorial Services as we pay tribute to our
Shipmates on Eternal Patrol. Remember these Memorial Services are truly what we are about. “To perpetuate the memory of our shipmates who gave their lives…” Following the Memorial Services (Apr 06 and
Memorial Day only) we will host a reception back at the clubhouse. These are always pot-luck receptions. We
ask you to bring a dish to share. We also need volunteers to help prepare, serve and cleanup.

Membership News—Robert Perritt
[email protected]
Together with Rick Boorman
and Brian Turley we as the Membership Committee have three
primary goals. Retention, Recovery and Recruitment. These goals
should not just be the Membership Committee’s Goals because
— RETENTION, RECOVERY
AND RECRUITMENT is the
responsibility of ALL HANDS.
We need to retain the members
we have. Recover the ones we may
have lost due to non-renewals and
recruit new members whenever
we have the opportunity.
We are in the final phase of the
retention phase for 2013. As of
this writing we still have 669
members who still need to renew,
which includes 135 Life Members.
Renewal Notes
*It’s never too early to pay your
dues in advance. We have members paid out till 2049. You may
renew in person with any member
of the Committee, fill out a renewal form at the clubhouse and drop
it with your payment in the Dues
Box by the stairs, renew by mail
or renew online at the Base Website using PayPal: http://
www.subvetsgroton.org/
Donations/default.aspx.
* Don’t forget when renewing to

(Regular and Associate). We have
been processing renewals since 1
Jul. As you can see by the membership statistics we are about
100 members shy of last year’s
total and our numbers for 2014
are really low. We need to put a
full court press on membership
renewals for 2014. On 31 January
those who have not renewed will
be dropped from the Membership
Roster, and those Life Members
will be dropped from Groton Base,
and will become Members At
Large of National.
We will be working hard on
Membership Renewals from now
to February working on getting as
many members to renew as possible. We will be putting forth our
best efforts to maximize the Membership Renewals so that in February 2014 we will only drop the
minimum number of members
due to non-renewals. YOUR

National Submarine Memorial East: Scott Freyer
I know how much the U.S. SUBVETS WWII National Memorial
East means to the members of
Groton Base and to the SUBVETS
WWII and I will strive to continue
maintaining the Memorial in the
standards fitting of a National Memorial.
After the last National Convention, I’m proud to say The Memorial Committee was recognized for
their efforts by receiving the National Commander’s Robert Link
Award. We are very proud of this
award and continue the standards
that got us here. The Memorial
Committee is responsible for the
care and maintenance of the U.S.
SUBVETS WWII National Memorial East. Donations can be made
at any time. All of the funds to do this
work come from either donations or
the Annual Appeal and Raffle. Your
support is in keeping with our creed
“To perpetuate the memory of our
Shipmates who gave their lives in support of our country…”
There’s always lots of work to do in
maintaining the grounds and the memorial in the standards deserving of a
national memorial to our war dead
and in preparing the memorial for the
various memorial services and functions held there. This takes volunteers
and donations to support this work.
The Memorial Committee could always use more volunteers—especially
younger volunteers.
We encourage you to visit your memorial and to use it for various func-
tions. Please just contact us first
to ensure there is no conflict with
someone else’s plans and that we
are not doing major work on the
day/time that you want to use
it.To volunteer to assist the Memorial Committee, for arrangements to use the Memorial or for
any questions or comments regarding the Memorial please contact
me
at

at (860) 941-7811.

Westport Satellite Group
The Westport Satellite Group
(WSG) is a group of Groton Base
SUBVETS who live in the southwest corner of CT. They enjoy the
benefits of being a part of the First
and Finest and have the added advantage of getting together as ship-
mates for good times and submarine
camaraderie even though they live
70–100 miles away from the clubhouse. The group as a whole are
great supporters of SUBVETS
Groton Base. They are big supporters of the Kaps for Kids, Scholarship
and Thanksgiving programs.
If you live down below New Haven
check them out. For more information, contact either Paul Grammar at (203) 386-9742 or
[email protected] or Dave Rosenbluh at [email protected].
ADDRESS CHANGES:
Please keep your address up to date at all times. Having the correct address allows us to get you stuff and saves
us money. If we mail our newsletters to the wrong address, they end up costing us money, and you lose touch with
your organization. To update your address it’s simple. Just contact the membership chairman Robert Perritt at
[email protected]. or call him at 860-961-8327.

The HOLLAND Club Report—Al Kinsall
The 2014 HOLLAND
CLUB ceremony will
be held on Saturday
07 June 2014. Currently there are 75
members who qualified in submarines
during 1964. Please note that if
you qualified before 1964 and
have not been inducted into this
prestigious group of submarine
veterans I urge you to contact me
so I can put you on the list for this
induction ceremony.
In the weeks to come I will be contacting each member to make
them aware of their eligibility and
to make sure their membership
dues are paid through 2014.
As stated many times before, each
month HOLLAND CLUB members get together at the club for
lunch. It’s a popular event that
sells out as soon as it’s publicized.
Wives and guests are welcome to
accompany their HOLLAND CLUB
member. The cost is only $6 each.
The luncheons are held the third
Tuesday of every month. Mark your
calendar and make your reservations early by contacting Bud Atkins (National HOLLAND CLUB
Chairman) either by email at [email protected] or (860) 4403120 for the next HOLLAND CLUB
luncheons scheduled for 15 October,
19 November and 17 December,
2013.
We are working on an excellent
guest speakers program for the remainder of the year. Recently we
have had as our guests: CAPT Richard E. Verbecke and CMDCM (SS)
Eric Murphy from Regional Support
Group Groton, RADM Ken Perry,
CMDR Submarine Group Two,
CAPT Dave Roberts, CO Naval
Submarine School and CMDCM
Thad

(SS) Roy Wohlgemuth, and CDR
Steven Wilkonson Commanding Officer of the USS Hartford (SSN768)
and COB MMCM(SS) Eric Mathley.
Watch for announcements in the
Base Commander’s weekly email.
Also, I’ll be sending out an email
reminder each month reminding you
to reserve your seats for the luncheons as space is limited. Thank you
all for taking the time to join us for
lunch.
If you have any questions about the
HOLLAND CLUB Induction ceremony or our monthly luncheons,
please don’t hesitate to contact me

2014 Groton Base Nominations/Elections
In January we start the process of Base Elections for the permanent positions of Base Vice Commander and
Base Secretary for the next two years.
The present Vice Commander Al Kinsall and the present Secretary Stephen Hallquist stepped up and were appointed to temporarily fill these vacated positions.
According to the Groton Base Bylaws the Base Vice Commander and Base Secretary are elected in odd years.
Only Regular Members (Not including Associate Members) may participate in the election of Base Officers, and
only Regular Members may run for the positions of Base Officers. Associate Members may not run or vote in Base
Elections. They can only vote in the Club Officers/Board of Trustee Elections in even years.
There will be a Chairman of the Base Officer Nominations Committee appointed in the January time frame.
The Chairmen’s job is to collect Nominations for the different positions available, and to verify the eligibility and
desire of the potential candidates. Nominations will remain open until 01 April 2014. When the Nominations close
on 1 April the Chairman will provide listings of those candidates who have indicated their willingness to serve to
the Base Secretary who will take care of the ballots and voting by the membership.
The call for nominations for USSVI Groton Base Elected positions which include the Base Vice Commander
and Secretary will be issued at the January monthly meeting. If you are a member in good standing, you may
nominate yourself or any other Primary Groton Base Member for any of the elected positions listed above.
Nominations, when called for, may be made from the floor at the meeting or afterwards by separate correspondence. Nominations shall be submitted by any member in good standing to the chairman of the Nominating
Committee on or before 1 April 2014 when nominations will be closed. To be placed on the ballot by the Secretary
a nominee must sign a statement saying they agree to serve if elected, nominations shall be accepted upon the
oral or written consent of the nominee that he accepts the nominations and will serve if elected. The qualifications
of the nominee, not to exceed 100 words, shall accompany nominations. The Nomination Committee will request those statements from your nominees for you.
Upon receipt of all nominations as aforesaid, the officer conducting the nominations for the Base officers shall
have published in the Base publication the names and qualifications, in alphabetical order, of all candidates
properly nominated, at least thirty (30) Days prior to the monthly meeting.

Submarine Qualification Recognition Program
Attention COs and COBs!
Do you know about our Submarine Qualification and Recognition
Program (SQRP)?
We would like the opportunity to
recognize your sailors with our
SQRP, but to do so we need your
support and involvement.
We need you or one of your Chief
Petty Officers to tell us that you
would like to recognize crew members who recently Qualified in
Submarines at an upcoming meeting. We need a list of the individuals including their full names and
rates/ranks at least one week prior
to the meeting that we will be recognizing your sailors so that way
we can prepare a certificate for
them.
On meeting night (first Monday of
every month except when it falls on
a holiday), the crew members show
up before the meeting starts at 1830.
Usually the COB, CO, other crew
members and family accompany
them. We conduct the SQRP at the
very start of the meeting. The CO
and COB say a few words if desired.
We all sound off our names and boat
and year that we qualified. When
the sailors hear some of the Qualification years it really hits them. We
are usually done by 1900 so all can
depart, or proceed downstairs to enjoy our facilities. Anyone can stay for
rest of the meeting.
Boats just returning from deploy-
ments are the ideal candidates with
numerous crew members who received their dolphins for us to recognize. We look forward to recognizing
your sailors.
If you are in port when our meetings are scheduled (Jan 6, Feb 3, Mar
3)), give the Base Commander a call
and allow us to recognize your sailors.
If you are not the CO, or COB reading
this, please show them a copy and
bring it to their attention so that we
can recognize your shipmates for
their efforts and welcome them as
“Brothers of the Phin”.

USSVI Silent Service License Plates—Harrison Solt III
The SUBVETS creed, in part, is
“To perpetuate the memory of
our Shipmates who gave their
lives in the pursuit of their duties while serving their country. Having the Silent Service License Plate on your vehicles is one
way to “live the creed”.
The requirements for the Connecticut “Silent Service” License
Plate are (1) You are a member, in
good standing, of SUBVETS
Groton Base. (2) You have a CT
registered vehicle, and (3) You are
listed on the registration. If you
satisfy items 1 through 3, the pro-
cess is simple. Contact me by Email
[email protected] or call me
(860) 464-9540 and I will send you
everything you will need, including
membership information if necessary.
Fees for this specialty license
plate are quite reasonable. Transferring an existing vanity or marker
plate is $65.00. Taking the next “off
the shelf” Silent Service plate is
$65.00. Establishing a new vanity
plate on the Silent Service plate is
$135.00.
Once the completed application
and your check made payable to
DMV is returned to me, your membership status is validated. The application and check is then forwarded to the Department of Motor Vehicles.
After about 6-8 weeks, your
plates arrive in the mail with instructions regarding the disposal of
your old plates. If there are any interim problems, I will work with
DMV to ensure everyone is happy.
I continue to get inquiries from
Submariners who didn’t know about
USSVI but spotted a Silent Service
plate or were referred to me by
DMV, so SUBVETS plates on our
roads are making a difference!
For over two years USSVI has
tried to create a motorcycle Silent
Service license plate.
Step up, be the next one on your
block to have the Silent Service License Plate on your vehicle.

Submarine Excellence At SUBVETS Groton Base
This article provides highlights of
some of the Submarine Excellence
from among our local commands,
and Active Duty membership at
Groton Base.
This quarter’s recognition for
Submarine Excellence goes to all
of our Shipmates in the Groton
area who were selected as either
Junior Sailor of the Year (JSOY)
or Sailor of the Year for 2013.
Getting selected to this group is
no easy accomplishment. It takes
a lot of hard work, dedication and
professionalism to achieve this
status. The JSOY and SOY recipients represent the very best Sailors from within our Submarine
Force. Although they go on to furth er c ompetition s at th e
COMSUBLANT levels, to select
the best Sailors at those levels
there are no losers in this group.
Every one of them is a winner.

Winners. Winning the Battle E
means your boat is the best of the
best. Having been on the receiving
end of that award is an honor and
a privilege for the entire crew. It
is no easy task. The Submarines
home ported here in Groton that
were the winners are as follows:

COB: FTCM(SS) Ronald Clark
Submarine Development
Squadron 12
USS DALLAS (SSN 700)
CO: CDR Jack Houdeshell
COB: FTCM(SS) Billy Williams
The BATTLE E award is just
one award. There are many other
Boats recognized at this time of
year for many other things with
other awards Congratulations to
all commands that were award
recipients.

House Committee—Jeff Walsh
Hello Shipmates,
I hope both you
and your family
had a wonderful
Christmas and I
wish your family
the best during
the New Year.
I would like to discuss the success we had this year with our
Thanksgiving Caring and Sharing
program. We served nearly 1000
meals which include Sailors and
their families, Veterans not able
to make it out for the holiday, and
local EMS and First Responders.
For this program to be a success,
it relies on the tremendous generosity of our many sponsors and
members with the various donations that we receive. This year
our many sponsors and wonderful
members went above and beyond
and they pulled through as they
have always done in the past. We
also raised enough to donate
$12,500 to the CSG-2 Caring and
Sharing Program, Navy Relief,
and Subvettes. I thank you for
your generosity as we USSVIGroton Base continue to do what
is good and take care of our own
in need.
As we start the New Year, it
also means it is that time to start
planning for one of our biggest
events, the 50th SUBVETS Anniversary and Scholarship.
We
have started to hold meetings in
planning for the many events that
will be held during the week, if
you wish to help please contact
myself and/or the Base Commander.
Our Brunches this year have
been a success thanks to our outstanding volunteers who consistently lend their support by cooking these Sunday meals. You will
notice a change this year as we
have dedicated every third Sunday as Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS) day.
With the help of our third week
crew: “Stu’s Crew” and Adrienne
Foret, all tips generated will be
donated to the Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS)
program. To date, with your help
we have raised nearly 200 dollars.
This program is very important
and I am striving to ensure we
give back to it, as John Riley and
his volunteer’s do such an honorable act. I believe whatever we can
do to help them would be a noble
thing.
We have a few dinners planned
this quarter. January 18th 2014
will be our Winter Steak Dinner;
our traditional St Patrick’s Day
dinner will be March 15th, 2014.
This year in place of our Veal dinner in February we are replacing
it with a Prime Rib Dinner. This
is scheduled for February 15th
2014.
The new calendar of events is
posted on the website, however if
there are any events you would
like to see, please contact me so
we can discuss how to best utilize
it to make it a success. My email
is [email protected] my
cell phone number (860) 449-2103.

Kap(SS) for Kid(SS)—John Riley
"No one stands
so tall as when
they stoop to
help a child"
Abraham Lincoln
Groton Base’s Kap(SS) 4 Kid(SS)
Team brings comfort and joy to children and advances USSVI’s creed
and purpose in the process.
On June 25th Groton Base Westport
Satellite Group SUBVETS Mike
DeLeo, Roy Wilkes and Buzz Merritt, with John and Jackie Riley,
visited Children at Bridgeport Hospital. This was our 4th visit to the
Bridgeport Hospital.
We visited the kids in the hospital's
Activity Room and made Honorary
Submariners of 11 boys and
girls. The kids had lots of questions
which we enjoyed answering. They
were very excited about becoming
Honorary Submariners and receiving the gifts we presented them.
As usual, the hospital staff asked us
to return to visit the children as
often as we can, and we promised to
do so.
On July 2nd, Rich Lukas, Mike Lewis, Stuart Temple, and John and
Jackie Riley conducted another
K4K visit to children at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center
in Hartford. We made Honorary
Submariners out of 37 Kids. We
brought comfort and joy to them
and the family members who were
visiting them.
The hospital staff thanked us for
our visit and requested that we
come back as often as we can. The
responses we receive from the children and their families warms our
hearts. Our lives are enriched by
the memories of these responses
and the knowledge that we made a
positive difference in the lives of our
new Honorary Shipmates.
We are coordinating with Connecticut Hospice to visit child patients in
their homes.
We are also discussing a K4K visit
to child and adult patients at the
Hospice. We were informed that
many of the hospice patients are
veterans and that it would be a
huge boost to their spirits.
Groton Base’s K4K shipmates bring
comfort and joy to sick children by
giving them caring attention and
making them honorary submariners. We give them an embroidered Honorary Submariner cap or
doo rag of their choice, an Honorary
Submariner certificate and a submarine photo signed by the SUBVETS. We also give them brochures
from the Groton, CT, Submarine
Force Museum and USS Nautilus
Submarine. We let them know that
they will get special treatment from
SUBVET docents if they wear their
caps when they visit.
We share lots of information about
submarines, submariners and our
history with the children and all
who are in attendance, which significantly advances the USSVI
Creed.
"We began by imagining that we
are giving to them; we end by realizing that they have enriched us" Pope John Paul II

2014 Washington, DC Memorial Day Parade
Shipmates,
I have finally gotten most of the
information on the Washington, DC
National Memorial Day Parade on
Monday, May 26, 2014. We have to
apply for it and be approved to
march in the parade. The National
Memorial Day Parade is our nation's largest Memorial Day event.
Each year, more than 250,000 spectators and 3000 participants convene in Washington, DC to honor
our heroes who have worn the uniform.
I need to know how many bases and
base members of each base are willing to march in the parade. At the
present time there will be very limited space for those members who
cannot walk the one mile length of
the parade. Parking will be very
limited anywhere near the parade
and most of us will have to use the
Metro subway to get to the parade
and walk maybe a half mile or more
to the location where we form up for
the parade. I also need to know how
many bases would be willing to
bring a float and I need a picture of
the float with the tow vehicle. I am
also in need of a color guard for our
unit in the parade. This information needs to be sent to me at
[email protected] no later than October 24, 2013, as I want to put our
parade application in before the end
of October. This information is also
needed so we can start looking into
hotels and transportation from the
hotels to the parade in Washington,
DC . Note: Bases do not have to put
in an application for the parade as
this is being handled by National
and would cause problems with our
approval process. After I put in our
application we will not be informed
if we were accepted until midJanuary 2014.
This is a professional parade put on
by a production company from
Pennsylvania that just got through
doing the Miss America Parade in
Atlantic City, NJ . There is a limit
on the number of floats we can
have and this will not be finalized
until after March, 2014 when they
start setting up the parade order
and formations. We also need to
have a uniform of the day so we all
look similar as this is a professional parade. Black shoes and socks,
khaki pants, base polo/golf shirt,
vest if you have one and either a
base/boat ball cap or garrison hat is
a starting idea at the moment.
You can see the 2013 parade information sheets on our website:

Subvettes News—Dee Carcioppolo
Please pass this to
your spouses, mothers,
sisters,
and
daughters.
The Ladies Auxiliary
of the U.S. SUBVETS
are called the SUBVETTES. The
SUBVETTES are an organization
for Spouses, Mothers, sisters and
daughters of Regular members of
SUBVETS Groton Base. We were
approved by a vote of the Groton
Base Membership several years
ago. Our purpose is to support
Groton Base as required, and to
coordinate our own programs. We
are also established to provide
camaraderie amongst the ladies
who support our SUBVETS.
The SUBVETTES meet at the
same time that Groton Base
meets which is on the first Monday of every month at 6:30 pm.
We are always looking for new
ladies to join on with us. You can
either come to one of our meetings, and find out what we are
about, or you can contact president Dee Carcioppolo at either
(860) 514 – 8770, or ladiesaux@sub vetsgroton.org .
The SUBVETTES have been
busy through the fall. We assisted
with the Veterans Day reception
following the Memorial Service,
and many of the ladies helped out
with preparing desserts for the
great Thanksgiving feast at the
clubhouse for the single Sailors.
In November we did another
packing/mailing for the Individual
Augmentee (IA) program for
Thanksgiving and we did a second
mailing for Christmas. Many
thanks to the ladies who either
volunteered, or provided items for
these events.
We still have cook book for sale
as a fund raiser so if you are interested please contact us.
Start thinking now about the
Submarine Birthday Ball in April
and the SUBVETS Anniversary
Celebration 01 - 03 May. Ensure
your SUBVET gets you tickets for
both as they will be good times
not to miss.
That’s all for now. Have a safe
but Happy New Year. We’ll talk to
you again next year.
