SYNOPSIS
Ilustrated by no fewer than 180 film fragments, a chronical of the way
women have been represented in Spanish cinema from the 30s to the
present day. This is also another way to look back over the Spanish
history.

THE DIRECTOR
Diego Galán is a film critic, writer and director.
He directed several series on cinema for Spanish television, among
which Memorias del cine español and Queridos cómicos.
He is also the author of specialized books such as Carta abierta a
Berlanga ; Fernán Gómez, un señor muy pelirrojo ; Un joven llamado
Saura ; Pilar Miró, nadie me enseñó a vivir y Jack Lemmon nunca
cenó aquí – the latter having been inspired by his experience when he
directed the San Sebastián International Film Festival, from 1986
to 2000.
Besides, he directed documentaries, among which ¿Quién fue Pilar
Miró? and Pablo G. del Amo, un montador de ilusiones.
Diego Galán has also been a film critic for the Spanish daily EL PAIS
since 1980.
DIRECTOR'S NOTE OF INTENT
It is said that the twentieth century's only succesful revolution
was women´s liberation. This of course refers to the western world
where the right to vote, access to management positions and the sexual
revolution marked a paradigm shift in the history of women's status in
society ... and yet there is still a long way to go. I'm pointing at Spain
which was traditionally, and still is, a male chauvinist country. The
title comes from the revealing saying "La Mujer casada y honesta, con
la pata quebrada y en casa" (lit. "The good honest wife at home with a
broken leg.") which doesn't seem as harsh in any of our
neighbours' languages. In French, the closest equivalent we have
found is "Retourne à tes fourneaux" (lit. "Get back to your stoves"),
and in English, "Barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen". Nothing
as cutting as the Spanish phrase.
As a result when making my film I concentrated on Spanish cinema.
Movies, whether we want them to or not, always reflect reality or a
part of it ; At each step in history Spanish films have mirrored the
customs and political situation of the country. In the thirties, once the
king had been diposed, a republic offering men and women equal
rights and freedoms was established. The civil war also divided
women into two groups, Facism's victory put them back in their place:
"At home with a broken leg." After the death of Franco, Spanish
women joined the existing global struggle for liberation and they have
not yet surrendered their arms !
We have created a humourous montage by assembling clips from 180
films and documentaries. We weren't able to use everything that we
wanted to but I feel the ones in the film are very significant.
Unfortunately, some of the original recordings have disappeared so we
were forced to use poor quality copies.
Anyway, WITH A BROKEN LEG aims both to inform and amuse. I
hope we have succeeded.
