May at GA!
Wednesday, May 6 – Senior Moments Luncheon
Spring has sprung and it is time for our annual spring Senior Moments Luncheon! Please
join us this day for the noon luncheon in Luther Hall with entertainment provided by
musician and storyteller Jack Pearson. Please see pg. 8 for more information.
Saturday, May 23 – GA Community Garden Construction Day
Celebrate the joy of spring and God’s good earth by joining the GA Community Garden
Taskforce, Boy Scouts and Hmong-American Partnership on Saturday 5/23 to build our
GA Community Garden! We are embodying our GA mission and value to be a Gateway of
Faith with our city and neighborhood by building authentic Christian relationships
through the community outreach partnerships of this community garden. See pg. 6-7 for
more information.
Sunday, May 24 - Pentecost Sunday
9:00 am – Holy Communion service with Affirmation of Baptism in the
Sanctuary
11:15 am – Special multi-tenant worship service in Luther Hall (followed
by a potluck at 12:15 am)
Pentecost is sometimes called the church's birthday, but might more appropriately be
called its baptism day, since the gift of the Spirit is the fullness of baptism when we live
into our identity as a beloved child of God and take up our calling as Jesus’ disciples to
love God and one another through our presence, words and actions.
Come and celebrate Pentecost and the gift of holy baptism on this Sunday. At the 9:00 am
service we celebrate Pentecost with the rite of confirmation (affirmation of baptism) for
six youth and a festival worship. During the education hour we will gather outside to bless
our new GA Community Garden. At the 11:15 am service we celebrate Pentecost with the
congregations who share our building with us in our 2nd multi-tenant Pentecost
celebration. We’ll cap off our festive day of the church’s birthday with a potluck meal
featuring the foods of our many cultures – lefese, tuna hot dish, samosas, egg rolls, jello
salad- whatever we all choose to prepare and share!

complete gift:
Thank you to Pastor Margaret Kelly and Pastor
Maggie Novak for joining us in worship to preach on
April 12th and 19th. We are grateful for the ways
they both help carry out the ministry of GA.
Thank you to those who donated items for the GA
Youth Garage Sale as well as to those who
volunteered their time!
Contribution News
First quarter giving statements were mailed out
at the end of April. If you notice errors, please
write the corrections on your statement and return it to the Business Office at GA. Thanks for
your continued partnership and ministry to be a
Gateway of Faith!
(1) our facility is used more frequently and
efficiently (we are good stewards of what we have
been given); (2) we learn from them about the
Gospel and ministry today for their unique
culture, and we offer the same to them in return;
(3) we provide affordable ministry space for
congregations under development who cannot
afford their own building; and (4) the rent they
pay to us supports our mission – it is a bonus!
We ought not consider ourselves dependent on
their rent payments, for we are responsible for the
care of this facility and the ministry we do in the
name of Jesus Christ. This extra money in our
mission spending plan (budget) makes it possible
for us to extend our mission to our neighbors, and
to be better neighbors to people on the East Side
and in ever-widening circles beyond.
Tenants carry liability insurance to cover any
damage that accidentally may be done to our
building. Let us give thanks for the relationships
that have begun to grow, particularly with our
custodians, who are always present when they are
in the building.
Let us give thanks for the relationships that are
growing between the people of Gustavus Adolphus
and these unique missions. And when the time
comes for them to move to a new location, let us
grieve their absence, and send them with our
blessings.

Global Missions: Gifted Leaders & Programs Serving Others
In late March Wes Johnson and I were privileged to
meet with Rev. Chandran Martin, ELCA Regional
Representative working with the people in Bangladesh
and Southeast Asia. For several years this
congregation has shared an interest in the work being
done at Dumki with Lutheran HealthCare –
Bangladesh as it serves pregnant women and children.
The ELCA Global Mission Board made a deliberate
decision several years ago to establish a hospital in a
Muslim country, and has been there with leadership
since that time. Rev. Martin, born and raised in India,
is an excellent fit for this position. While LHC-B went
through some rough times a few years back, it is good
to report that they are back on the right track with a
new director, excellent board made up of men and
women, strong governance practices and rigorous
monitoring by Rev. Martin three times a year.
