Friday 15 January - University of Sheffield
Graduation
2016.
Friday 15 January 2016
The University of Sheffield
Your graduation day is a special day for you and your family, a day for celebrating your achievements
and looking forward to a bright future. As a graduate of the University of Sheffield you have every reason
to be proud. You are joining a long tradition of excellence stretching back more than 100 years.
The University of Sheffield was founded with the amalgamation of the School of Medicine, Sheffield
Technical School and Firth College. In 1905, we received a Royal Charter and Firth Court was officially
opened by King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. At that time, there were 363 students reading for
degrees in arts, pure science, medicine and applied science. By the time of our centenary, there were over
25,000 students from more than 100 countries, across 70 academic departments.
Today, a degree from Sheffield is recognised all over the world as a hallmark of academic excellence.
We are proud of our graduates and we are confident that you will make a difference wherever you choose
to build your future.
With every generation of graduates, our university goes from strength to strength.
This is the original fundraising poster from 1904/1905
which helped raise donations for the University of
Sheffield.
Over £50,000 (worth more than £15 million today) was
donated by steelworkers, coal miners, factory workers and
the people of Sheffield in penny donations to help found
the University.
A century on, the University is now rated as one of the top
world universities – according to the Shanghai Jiao Tong
Academic Ranking of World Universities.

Welcome from the Vice-Chancellor
For all of us here at the University, this is one of the high points in
the year, as we congratulate you on your achievements and share
with you in your hopes and plans for the future.
But this is by no means the end of your association with the
University. Today you are joining the ever-growing global community
of University of Sheffield alumni. We hope that you will keep in touch
with us, and with each other, in the years to come.
Congratulations to you and a warm welcome to your family and
friends. We hope everyone here today enjoys this very special
occasion.

Reasons to be Proud
Graduation is a time to recognise and celebrate achievement and success, and every graduate has a
story to tell of effort and attainment.
You should feel proud you are graduating from a world-leading university that is helping address some
of the most urgent challenges facing society today.
That’s why some of the world’s most talented, ambitious staff and students come here, finding a place
they can challenge accepted wisdom, push boundaries and break the mould.
The University of Sheffield Graduation: Friday 15 January 2016
As a place to live and study, we believe Sheffield
is impossible to beat.
• We delivered free lectures to the people of Sheffield
through our Mobile University.
We believe that’s because we are building
something very special here in the city we call
home - academic excellence and the very best
student experience.
• Our Department of Landscape is helping Sheffield City
Council regenerate the Riverside District and Castlegate
areas of the city.
Pioneered
• The University is home to two Catapult centres – our
Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with
Boeing and the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research
Centre (Nuclear AMRC) – that are driving economic
growth and boosting the UK’s nuclear industry.
• Our scientists joined world leaders at the UN Conference
on Climate Change to share our expertise on food security
and sustainable energy to help them tackle climate
change.
Recognised
• We’ve been named among the top 100 universities in
the world in the latest Times Higher Education World
Universities Rankings.
• Our engineers are developing microscopic swimming
devices that have the potential to deliver drugs to a
targeted location inside a patient’s body.
• Sheffield Students’ Union has been voted the best in the
UK for the fourth year in a row in the National Student
Survey (NSS).
• Scientists at the University are leading a project to find
new treatments and a cure for the debilitating childhood
disease Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA).
• A new £10 million centre to address climate change and
provide food security will be led by Sheffield researchers.
• Our researchers are developing new tools to help female
cancer patients make more informed decisions about
their fertility.
• Sheffield scientists have identified a new protein which
regulates the severity of tissue damage caused by
rheumatoid arthritis. This discovery will help patients with
the most severe effects of the disease be identified early
and fast-tracked to treatment.
• Researchers at the University have discovered a drug,
which has already been in use for decades to treat liver
disease, which could be an effective treatment to slow
down the progression of Parkinson’s disease.
• An international team of researchers led by Sheffield has
discovered that MRI scanners, normally used to produce
images, can steer cell-based, tumour busting therapies to
specific target sites within the body.
• Dr Stuart Littlefair from our Department of Physics and
Astronomy discovered that brown dwarf stars host
powerful aurora displays just like planets.
• We’ve opened a new £3 million advanced nuclear
materials research facility to develop new environmentally
sound strategies for the safe treatment and disposal of
radioactive wastes.
Invested
• World renowned investor and environmental
philanthropist Jeremy Grantham is helping our scientists
create a more sustainable world through our Grantham
Centre for Sustainable Futures.

the world – Factory 2050 – a revolutionary, glass-walled
reconfigurable factory at the heart of our advanced
manufacturing campus on Sheffield Business Park.
• Our engineers are using their expertise in a £10 million
research centre to transform the UK’s manufacturing
industries through the use of phonics, the science and
technology of light.
• The Chancellor, George Osborne, announced a historic
devolution deal for the Sheffield City Region at our
Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) with
Boeing.
• Our new £81 million building – The Diamond – officially
opened last September. The six storey building includes
specialist teaching facilities, seminar rooms, open-plan

The University of Sheffield Graduation: Friday 15 January 2016
Honorary Degrees
The University of Sheffield confers honorary degrees (or degrees honoris causa – as a ‘mark of
honour’) on people who have given distinguished service or brought distinction to the University,
the City of Sheffield or the region. They may be individuals of national or international standing or
alumni of the University who have risen to the heights of their chosen profession or field of service.
The University tradition of recognising excellence in this way dates back to the first congregation to
award Sheffield degrees. This took place on 2 July 1908 in Firth Hall, and the first honorary degree
was awarded to the then Chancellor, the Duke of Norfolk. The University is proud to include many
notable figures amongst its honorary graduates in the years since and 2016 is no exception.

1964), was awarded an honorary degree (DSc) in 1995. The
Kroto Research Institute is named in his honour.

The Arms of the University of Sheffield
The University Arms, whose background colour is azure, contains a gold-edged open book at its centre, on which is
inscribed Disce Doce (Learn and Teach).
On either side of the book is a sheaf of eight silver arrows, which is derived from the shield of old Sheffield. The gold
crown is the Crown of Success and the White Rose of York denotes the University’s home county. The scroll carries the
motto of Firth College, Rerum Cognoscere Causas (To Discover the Causes of Things; from Virgil’s Georgics II, 490).
The University mace, which precedes the presiding officer in the academic procession, is made from silver gilt. Used for
the first time in 1909, it bears the Arms of both the University and the City of Sheffield, the York Rose, and the figure of
Minerva holding the wreath and palm branch.
