Hey there Mustangs! We’re back again this week with some more awesome information from our Agenda Books! This
week we’ll learn a new study tip, vocabulary word, quote, day in history, and a random tip from pages 82 and 83 of
our Agenda Books.
This week’s vocabulary word is engross. Engross
means to occupy completely. An example of
engross used in a sentence would be: “I had so
much homework on Monday night, it began to
engross me.”
This week’s awesome study tip is: Do rote (mechanical or
habitual repetition of something to be learned) memory
tasks and review, especially details, just before you fall
asleep. If you review things right before you go to bed,
they’ll stay in your head longer and you’ll memorize things much easier if you do this because it will be the
last thing you remember for the night.
The quote of the week this week is: “Be a rainbow
in somebody else’s cloud.” – Maya Angelou.
Maya Angelou is hailed as a global renaissance
woman, a celebrated poet, memoirist, novelist,
educator, dramatist, producer, actress, historian,
filmmaker and civil
rights activist. Maya was
born on April 4th, 1928,
in St. Louis and
experienced the brutality
of racial discrimination,
but also became absorbed
by unshakable faith and values in her traditional
African-American family, community and her
culture.

Florida was dedicated. President

When you wake up in the morning to get dressed, are you ever just
stumped? Do you ever think man, I really want to wear that tank top,
but it’s too hot to wear a shirt over? Maybe you’ve walked down the
hall and a teacher has said, “Hey you! How wide are your tank top
straps?” Now your caught and written up. Why is the dress code so
strict?
Many people like wearing
tank tops to school during the
warmer months of school, but
some run into trouble, maybe
because their straps aren’t wide
enough.
In the Allen East
student handbook,
under the DRESS
REGULATIONS it
states that, “tank
tops less than two
inches wide… are
not permitted.” And
when this rule was
put in there were people who
tried to push the limits of what
was acceptable to wear at
school.
Though, really it is unfair for
the school to mandate a dress
code that is fading from society.
Maybe the 2-inch tank tops are
harder to find, because the
fashion of clothes is changing.
The school could maybe try to
find a compromise between its
dress code and the fashions of
today.
With the changing of
climates, the spring, summer
and even autumn days of Ohio
are getting warmer. Some are
finding it hard to stay cool in the
heat. And with the lack of 2-inch
sleeves available to today’s
teens, people are forced to
muddle through.
Of course, some can make
the argument that if the school
changes the tank top rule,
what is going to stop
rambunctious teens from trying
to blur the line of what is
acceptable to wear and what is
not. But, there are other rules
that can be made to prevent
teens from crossing over to the
“dark side” of wardrobes.
We caught up with a
couple teachers to ask
them what their opinion
of the tank top rule, and here is
what they had to say…
Mrs. McDorman said, “I think
that two inches is fair, because I
don’t want to see girls’ bra
straps, and such.”
Whereas, Mr. Casey had this
to say, “My opinion is that it is
probably very difficult to find a
tank top with straps that are two
inches wide. So, I kind of have
ambivalent feelings, because we
have to abide by the school
board rules, but although in the
past straps that were two
inches wide would have been
more easy to come by, in today’s
society and in this area such
tank tops are something you
don’t come across often. So,
even if you wanted to wear a
tank top with two inch wide
straps, it would be very
difficult, and this true for
both girls and guys.”
Mr. Casey makes a
very good point. Think
about it…

The student council is always working hard on school related issues and events like the blood drive and the
homecoming dance. This week we are going to show our appreciation of all that they do for us by interviewing
one of their own. This member of student council is none other then Max McAdoo.
Q: So Max, what made you want to join
Student Council?
Q: What is the most fun thing that you have
ever done with the student council?
A: I joined student council because I want to
attend College at Notre Dame University and
it looks good on a college resume. I also
wanted to make a difference in our school.
A: Well every year the picking of the prom
theme is pretty fun but if I had to pick the
most fun thing that I have ever done as a
part of the student council is the student
achievement fair because I got out of school
and there was an awesome buffet.
Q: How long have you been a part of student
council?
A: I joined student council my Junior year so this
would be my second year.
Q: What is your title in student council?
A: I was elected by my piers to be the Senior
Class Vice President.
Q: Does student council have any events
coming up?
A: Some of the events that we have planned for
the rest of this year are another blood drive
in the spring, picking super fan themes for
the basketball games, and picking a theme
for prom.
Q: Is there anything that you would like to
add?
A: I would like to add that if everybody tried to
make the school a little bit better every day
it would be a pretty great place.

Have you heard about that wacky group here at Allen East? They are not afraid to be silly in
front of a crowd. They actually thrive off of being in the spotlight on stage. That crazy group is
the Drama Club! Read on the find out more about Couch Potato Santa!
The Drama Club is putting on a play called
Couch Potato Santa. This is going to be
performed on December 21, 2012. This is
going to be performed in front of
kindergarten through 3rd grade. This week
there was only one rehearsal, it was
Wednesday December 5, 2012 in the
auditeria from 3-4. The group only has 3
more rehearsals to put this play together.
The play is set in
Santa’s living room at the North Pole.
The play starts out
with Santa lying on
a couch watching
TV.
He
flips
through the channels trying to find
something to watch but he is not satisfied
with each channel that he flips to. Everyone
at the North Pole tries to get Santa happy
again. Also, Rudolph got a nose job!
Everyone can tell that it is fake but he is
mad that everyone makes fun of him for his
nose. He just wants to fit in with all of the
other reindeers. But his nose stands out
more.
This group is planning on doing a live
nativity scene at the Harrod United
Methodist Church. They are doing this on
December 15, 2012. You can come and
watch this at 7:00pm, 7:30pm, 8:00pm, and
again at 8:30pm. Come out and see them!
Make sure that if you come and see them
that you are in a car so you can tune your
radio to the
station
that
they
provide
you with so you
can hear what
is going on!
The drama club is planning on redoing the
whole set for the nativity scene. This will be
quite expensive and they are not sure if
they are going to be able to do this yet. The
set is very old and has been used by the
church for many years. So, come out and
support your fellow classmates by watching
this the live nativity scene and Harrod
United Methodist Church!

On Monday, the high school quiz bowl team went back to LCC to start their tournaments.
The
tournament is in the last few weeks that the team gets to play. These are the matches that decide who is the
best team in the league. This just so happens to be the wrapping up of the Quiz Bowl season for Allen East.
This is the beginning of the end of the season and throughout the next few weeks we wish the best of luck to
our team of smart and brilliant students!
When the team went to LCC they had a total of 5 matches and each one was fought well. In each match
there were two rounds, the toss-up round and the buzz round. The toss-up round has fifteen questions worth
two points. For each question the team has fifteen seconds to come up with an answer and write it down on
the white board they are given. In the buzz round each team has a chance to race the opponent in buzzing in
with the correct answer for a total of three points. Each question gives the players ten seconds to think quickly
before their chance is up. The only exception is a math question which last thirty seconds in both rounds.
The Varsity team had six players which were Trey
Gossard, Derek Ketchum, Trenton Carey, Casey
Crow, Julie Webster and Bren Emerson. The first
match of the night the Varsity team had a bye
which means that they sat out and watched a
match. The next game they were in against
Wapakoneta. It was a hard fight but in the end the
team lost 41 to 13. The third match was against
Spencerville and with some great answers Allen
East won, 20 to 13. In the fourth match the team
played Shawnee. The questions were tough and the
team ended up losing, 27 to 8. The fifth match
turned out to be great for the six players as they
went head to head with Perry. Allen East managed
to score 27 points against Perry’s 13. Then came the
final round, it was Allen East against Lima Senior.
Both teams fought it out to then end, battling each
other to the end where Allen East had 12 points
against 10. Overall, the Varsity did well, winning
three of five matches played.
The Junior Varsity team had eight players on the
team last week, Rachel Ernest, Katelyn Mattson,
Dakota Clark, Alex Larese, Kiley Lutes, Maddison
Rex, Forest Hager and Ben Thayer. The first match
that they played was against Bath. They had lots of
energy and put plenty of effort into the match but
alas they lost in the end with a final score of 8 to
13. In the next match they played against Bluffton.
Their efforts and attempted were to no prevail for
in the end they lost, 22 to 12. The third match they
were to play against Delphos Jefferson but the
school didn’t have a large enough team to play so
Allen East had a bye. The fourth match they played
Elida and lost 11 to 6. Then came the final match of
the night, Allen East versus LCC. It was a hard
fought battle but in the end the Junior Varsity team
lost, 28 to 11. The JV team had fought well
throughout the night but their attempts didn’t get
them far. Thankfully they still have some time to
pull up in the rankings and place in the tourney!

The Varsity game against the
Cardinals was thrilling. In the first

weak quarter for us only scoring 6
points the entire quarter. The
halftime score was 29 – 19, New
Bremen up. It was a new half and
the boys kicked it into gear. The

score of 41 – 35.
The

exhilarating.
Both teams were
back and forth the
entire
quarter.
Unfortunately,
the
guys did not come
out with a win falling
short by 2 points. The
final score was 58 – 56 a Cardinal

The JV and Varsity played Pandora
on December 1st, 2012. The JV
played very well. They won 32 –
22. Travis Wireman was the
leading scorer for this game with
15 points. Tanner Stippich was the
next leading scorer following
Travis, with 8 points. They are
now 1 – 1.
The Varsity boys had a tough
night playing after such an
adrenalin
battle the night before. The final
score was 44 – 35. They played
well throughout the entire game
but they unfortunately could not
come up with a win. The top
scorers were Senior Clay Plaugher
and Junior Marcos Quintero both
having 7 points. Juniors Tyler
Friesner and Matt Shuey both
scored 6 points each for the team.
It was a great game overall. Better
luck next time for the Mustangs!

This year the basketball season has been really exciting. The reason for most of the excitement
is our basketball cheerleaders. Those girls really know how to get the crowd pumped up! To
see who is behind all of the excitement we talked to a very special cheerleader, a senior, a
motivator, and most of all a leader! It is our very own Brooke Forest! She took some time to
talk with us about the excitement of the cheerleaders this year here is what she had to say...
Q: So Brooke, how is the season going so
far?
A: The season is going really
well; the girls are working
super hard!
Q: What is
your favorite
cheer?
A: My favorite
cheer would
have to be Cat
Dog! It is fun and gets the
fans really into the game!
Q: How are the fans doing
this year?
A: The fans are doing awesome! I am super
excited to see how our fans look against
Bath!
Q: How do you think the underclassmen on
the varsity squad are doing this year?
A: They are doing a really good job
and they are really fun to cheer
with!
Q: Do you have a ritual you do
before every game?
A: I just like to
dance like crazy
with my friends
and get excited
and pumped up for
the game!
Q: Is there anything else
you would like to
add?
A: Go Brass and Go Blue!!

The Junior High Cheerleading squad works hard each game to pump up the crowd and energize the
team! They enjoy what they do and love being a part of the team. They are under the lead of a former Allen
East cheerleader, Kortney Reneau. We had the chance to interview two great people on the squad for this
year. It just so happens that both of them are extremely close to their coach.

With a paintbrush in one hand and a smock over her
clothes, she teaches grades 7 through 12 about artists
such as Pablo Picasso and Vincent Van Gogh. She’s always willing to lend a helping hand to any of her students.
That’s right; we’re talking about our very own teacher,
Mrs. Massillo. Always on the go, we were lucky to
interview her so you can see what an awesome teacher
she is!
Q: Mrs. Massillo, how long
have you been a teacher
here at Allen East?
Q: Do you do art outside
of school?
Q: What is your favorite
thing about art?
Q: What is your favorite
medium?
A: Yes. I have put some of
my work in some
surrounding art shows
and even won a couple
awards.
A: I like how you can
convey ideas and
emotions. You can get
someone to see what you
see.
A: I love doing work in
colored pencil!
Q: What made you want
to teach art?
Q: Who is your favorite
artist?
Q: What is your favorite
project to teach?
A: My high school art
teacher really was a big
influence on me becoming
an art teacher. He was
very nice and very helpful
and I thought that I would
like doing it, too.
A: Vincent Van Gogh. I
love his style.
A: I’ve been a teacher here for 20 years.
A: I like teaching painting.
It’s so easy and the kids seem to be really good at
it.
Q: Why do you think kids
should take art?
A: I think it’s a great way for them to express
themselves.

This week we had time to sit down with that girl everybody knows and loves. She is involved in
a lot but you might not see her because she is super-fast. She’s always smiling and brightening people’s days. It’s Hailey Perkins! Here is what she had to say!
Q. How is your Senior
year going so far?
A. It is going just
fantastic!
Q. Do you know where you are going
to college at?
A. I have it narrowed down to
Findlay or Toledo.
Q. Do you think you will miss high
school?
A. Most definitely.
Q. What extracurricular activities are
you involved in?
A. I am in cross country and
track. I also am a class officer,
student council and SADD.
Q. Would you recommend
Post-Secondary to under
classman?
A. Yes, but not until your senior year
because you miss out on stuff.
Q. What advice do you have to the
underclassman?
A. Have fun while it lasts, because it
goes by fast.
Q. Is there anything else you’d like to add?
A. Prepare yourself for track this year
because the 4x4 team is going to
state again!

In our school there are so many special people, and sometimes not everyone truly knows just how special some of the
people are. This week we took some time to talk to a very special student and also a member of our armed forces. You
will most likely see him walking the halls having a good time putting a smile on everyone’s face. Who is this guy? He is our very own Seth Gehle and he took time out of his busy day to talk to us and here is what he had to say…
Q: What Branch of the military are you in?
A: I am in the Army Reserve.
Q: What made you want to join the
military?
A: I joined the military to serve our
wonderful country. I wanted to
make a difference and the military
gives me guidance.
Q: Would you recommend joining the
military to anyone?
A: Yes, it’s a great choice. There are only benefits. It makes you a new person
and teaches you leadership values.
Q: What is the best part about being in the
military?
A: The best part is when people thank me. It
is the best feeling when someone thanks
me for my service. I could care less about
the money or anything else.
Q: Is being in the military everything that
you expected?
A: Yes and no, some things are
different. I used to think soldiers
were like gods, but in reality they are
just everyday people like you and me.
Q: What was your favorite part of basic
training?
A: My favorite part of basic training was
learning to use all the weapons. Some
of the ones we shot were the M16, M4
Carbine, SAW (Squad Automatic
Weapon), and a Grenade Launcher.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to
add?
A: Go Army! And if you are seriously
interested in any branch of the military,
go for it. We all serve the same cause,
and it’s a great feeling to protect such a beautiful country.

This week we had an opportunity to spend some time with a newby and ask her a few
questions. You see her walking through the halls most of the time with camouflage on. She
is a shy kind of girl but she is everybody’s friend and loves it here at AE! You know who she
is, it’s Leah McCollum!
Q: What school did you previously attend?
Q: Is there anything else you
would like to include?
A: I went to Perry High School.
A: I’ve made a lot of really good friends
Q: Do you like Allen East?
like Kennedy Rex, Abby Wright, Julia
Daigle, and Amanda Baker.
A: Yeah, because the people are a lot
nicer and take their classes more seriously
compared to
Perry.
Q: What’s your
favorite class?
A: Chemistry is my
favorite class because I want to be a
chemical engineer.
Q: Why did you move here?
A: I moved here because bullying was a
major issue and Perry was a bad time.
Q: What activities are you involved in?
A: I am involved in Brass and Concert
Band.

Q: How long have you been playing football and
why did you first join?
A: I joined in the 4th grade and I thought it looked
like a fun sport to play.

A: I applied there because Joe Miller talked me
into turning in an application and it ended up I got
the job. Now I have been working there for about
a year and a half.
Q: How much do you like working with Lenzy

A: Yes, I enjoy wrestling a lot because you get to

Q: How did you do last year in wrestling?
A: I love working with her! She is so fun and I love
how she is Asian! 
Q: You took French 3 last year why didn’t you take French 4?
A: I did not do so great last year. I’m hoping for a
better season this year.
A: I decided not to take French 4 because I
thought that it would benefit me to take other
hard classes instead.
Q: Is there anything else you would like to add?

Hey there readers! This week we have some great advice coming to you! So
let’s dig in with none other than Mr. Advice himself, Drew Swaney!
Dear Mr. Advice, I have recently thought
about selling my vehicle, but I am unsure
about how I will be able to get to school and
work, and I don’t know how much to sell it for. Please help!
Sincerely, Vehic-less.
Dear Vehic-less, I have encountered the same
problem many of times. What my advice is to
you is to see what your vehicle books for
online. Then after that, post it on a site like
Craigslist or EBay, and post your asking price.
Be ready to get people asking you to trade for
nonsense ideas though, or people offering
way too low a price. As for not having a
vehicle, see if you can get one lined up so
when you sell yours, you can buy another.
Good luck!
Sincerely, Mr. Advice
Dear Mr. Advice, why do kids say the
darndest things?
Sincerely, confused.
Dear Confused, I believe kids say the
darndest things, for the fact that they have
nothing else to say. They say stuff to make
people think they are funny.
Sincerely, Mr. Advice.
Dear Mr. Advice, I see a lot of people with
blonde hair. I just want to know, what is
wrong with them? I want to be cool, is that
the cool thing to do? Please help!
Sincerely, out-of-the-loop-brown-haired-kid.
Dear out-of-the-loop-brown-haired-kid, I
know that you think this is the right thing to
do, but trust me. It’s not. Don’t dye your hair
blonde. It’s not the “cool thing” to do. It’s an Allen East tradition for wrestlers to dye their
hair. Keep your natural hair color. It’s better.
Sincerely, Mr. Advice.
Dear Mr. Advice, Is the
Buh-buh-buh-bird bird
bird really the word? I was
not aware that the bird
was the word. I’ve heard so from so many people
and I don’t know what to believe!
Sincerely, The Trash-Man.
Dear Trash-man, I believe that the bird really
is the word. I think so, because think about it.
Bird is a word. So the song makes sense now.
Since it says the “the Bird is the Word” I believe that the bird, is in fact, a word. And
not just A word, THE word.
Sincerely, Mr. Advice.
