Vancouver Tap Dance Society proudly presents...
2010 Vancouver International
Tap Festival
A
fter a decade of growing this event and on the heels of the successful
and delightful 10th anniversary last year, we admit to having been
being a bit stumped about how to follow up in Vancouver, 2010.
Thoughts of what attracted me to tap dance and the inspiration to put on shoes
and take some lessons seemed to surface. It was tap in the movies and tap on
Broadway that caught me, hook, line and sinker. And so, this year we will
feature some of the most glorious moments in tap dance.
For example, we are proud to announce that the legendary Harold
Cromer will make his inaugural visit and put Vancouver on the map as one
of the major cities where he has shared his spectacular “Opus One”. As well:
two of the highlights from our festival five years ago: the eagerly awaited
return of tap star Jason Samuels Smith. And by popular demand we will
once again be hosting our amazing dinner cruise. Our VTDS presentations
continue to reach out and expand as we offer tap to Gabriola Island, the Isle
of the Arts, two days before our festival begins. And in November, we will copresent - with Centennial Theatre, Savion Glover’s production of “Bare
Soundz.” The society’s staff and board of directors thank you for your
support and the inspiration that moves us forward each year to shape a
program that everyone in our tap community will want to be part of. To all our
visitiors: We are looking forward to welcoming you to our city.

A Few Words About The Classes
CONTINUOUS CLASSES
Classes scheduled at the same time, with the same instructor, for all 2 or 3 days will be delivered with the intent of
covering continuous work over the 2 or 3 days. All single classes that may repeat an instructor, level or narrative are
individual classes that are uniquely different - none of these classes are continuous or repeated.
ADULT CLASSES
HAROLD CROMER:
OPUS ONE (3-day, continuous)
Sarah Reich assisting
- Intermediate/Advanced
Our festival proudly joins the ranks of major cities
to showcase this masterpiece created by Harold
in 1943 in New York while hanging out with the
likes of Gene Kelly. Cromer loved the Sy Oliver
arrangement of Opus One, particularly the violins
and included some ballet in his choreography. The
original master class premiered at the New York
Festival in 2004, with Lee Howard, Josette
Wiggan, Michelle Dorrance, Sarah Reich and
Jason Samuels Smith participating. The rest is
history, as they say. Join the growing legion of tap
dancers around the world, including the elite level,
who love the art form of tap and this unique piece.
DIANNE WALKER:
ROUTINE ONE (Nine hour residency) - Intermediate
“More, More, More!” was the resounding
reaction to our first residency with this
remarkable lady. Lady Di suggested: “Ask
Mika Komatsu from VTDS to pick a Leon
Collins’ routine for 2010.” She chose
ROUTINE ONE as the ideal vehicle for
students to fully embrace his work. Collins
approached his compositions with a clear
and understandable phrasing of crisp straight
eighth notes, accented and syncopated by
clapping sections, quick turns, and sharp
angular movements. Studying and sharing with Lady Di for nine hours is truly
a tap blessing. If you consider teaching this routine, Dianne advises that this
class will provide insights into both Leon’s and her methodology.
JASON SAMUELS SMITH:
RHYTHMIC EXPLORATIONS
(3-day, continuous) - Advanced
This is your opportunity to join 2009 Dance
Magazine Award-recipient Jason Samuels Smith
as he showcases his intricate rhythms and
original style in this invaluable three-day course.
The New York Times Claudia La Rocco says:
“even when his shoes seem barely to be
touching the stage, he exudes a powerful sense
of weighty rootedness that makes his virtuosic
explosions all the more dazzling.” Refine your
technique and improve your overall sense of
timing and musicality. Come ready to dance
hard and have fun while breaking a serious
sweat and don’t forget to bring a towel.
ADVANCED RHYTHMIC FOUNDATIONS
- Advanced Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced
Each class is a journey in developing and advancing the vocabulary and
skill of students. They will be exposed to diverse musical phrasing with an
emphasis on clarity and timing. Jason’s own experience and influences
will be embodied in each class with a strong emphasis on paying homage
to tap history and the legends who paved the way for the art form today.
JASON JANAS:
CONDOS BROTHERS (3-day, continuous) - Inter/Adv.
“I’d watched Steve Condos work a small square of plywood in his
Florida home, hour after hour, plumbing the fundamentals, the sources
of rhythm, drilling his feet into the wood to find the most beats he could
excavate,” recalled dance historian Sali Ann Kriegsman. Since he
began tap dancing JJ has also admired the Condos Brothers and will
share his respect, knowledge and passion in a Vancouver showcase of
their legendary speed, execution, precision, and let’s not forget: those
perfect, 5-sound wings. Grab some wood and get on this Condos’ Ride,
driven by an immensely talented, rhythm-obsessed artist who can lay
down his own tap hailstorm.
COMBOS, COMBOS, COMBOS
- Advanced Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced
Jason has many tricks, rhythms and combinations in his tap tool kit and we
asked him to highlight his favourite combinations of all time. He will share
these with you along with the knowledge of why they are so special to
him. Each class will have the appropriate combo selection to match skill
levels.
TERRY BROCK:
42nd STREET
(3-day, continuous) - Intermediate
“If you’ve got a little time to spare I’ll want to take
you there. Come and meet, those dancing feet.
On the avenue I’m taking you to.” Lyrics from
the iconic Broadway sensation: “42nd Street,” say
it all. And Terry is thrilled to be presenting this
classic choreography.
ELLIE - Advanced Beginner
In her uniquely heartwarming manner, Terry will
not only share her admiration of the artistry of
Eleanor Powell, but also a few new inside stories
about the “Queen of Tap Dancing,” along with
revealing insights.
JEFF HYSLOP:
One (2-day, continuous) - Intermediate
Yes, he is going to share with you his unique experience on Broadway in
the singular and enduring sensation: Chorus Line. Jeff was there, and will
take students inside this classic, front and centre, by sharing his insights
into the essence of its success, choreography that continues to thrill
gazillions, along with memories and stories that only a few know.
Welcome Jeff!
JOHNSON & PETERS:
GENE KELLY’S “I’VE GOT RHYTHYM” (2-day) - Intermediate
“I’ve Got Rhythm” is a lesson in classic tap dance steps demonstrated with
the action- packed physicality, creativity and charm that is unique to Gene
Kelly. Anthony and Cheryl will co-deliver this session.
Anthony Peters - Advanced Beginner
Shuffles, flaps, cramp roll, etc. are typically thought to be standard
advanced beginner steps. But in the heyday of tap dance, wings and pull
backs were considered fundamental techniques. This class is devoted to all
these steps and more.
Cheryl Johnson French Caribbean Music - Intermediate
Upbeat and fun choreography by Cheryl Johnson, inspired by French
Caribbean music created to support the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.
working it, getting dancers to feel the rhythm and move like they never
thought they could. Try this class, you will know what I’m talking about;
sweet!”
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
TEACHING SECRETS (Teachers Only)
Collectively, Cheryl, Dianne and Terry share more than 60 years of teaching
experience at all levels, training the past, present and future generations of
talent in our amazing tap community. Teachers, this discussion is for you.
Ask, hear and share time-honoured insights and methodology, as you
interact one-on-one with these three remarkable women.
A CAREER IN TAP - (Everyone!)
Harold Cromer, Jason Samuels,
Anthony Peters and Jason Janas
It’s designed to be highly informative and
thoroughly entertaining - even if you aren’t pursing
a career in the tap. This session will focus on four
champions of tap who will share their truly
amazing careers and uniquely individual paths, so
rich and successful on many levels that we knew
we had to provide an opportunity to chat, up close
and personal.
JESSIE SAWYERS:
STORYTELLING (2-day continuous)
- Intermediate/Advanced
Great music tells stories that we can relate to our
own lives. It makes us feel connected. Sometimes
a story told literally through lyrics. But often it’s told
figuratively, through the musical composition itself,
through the groove, the rise and fall, the
beginning, middle, and end. This class will be
filled with a combination of lessons on how to
cultivate the storyteller within yourself, and also
explore how you too can create a more
meaningful connection with your audience.
SLIDES - Advanced Beginner
Slides bring a playful, youthfulness to our dancing.
They’re fun to do, and even more fun to watch!
In this class, you’ll learn tips and techniques to
help you glide effortlessly across the floor in
combinations that introduce the wide variety of
slides.
MATT SHIELDS:
EFFORTLESS ASTAIRE - Advanced Beginner/Intermediate
When Sas asked what he would like to share this year, Matt replied: “Hey
I gotta’ a lot of Fred down, in my pocket. How about an Astaire class?” Her
response was: “You’re down Matt; for years now we’ve wanted to include
a class on his work.”
YOUTH CLASSES
(All classes - Intermediate level)
MATT SHEILDS:
BURN UP THE FLOOR (3-day, continuous)
This is Matt’s fourth appearance at our festival (he
fondly calls Vancouver his second home). To
celebrate, he is giving up some of his original,
cutting-edge choreography and creating a piece
that will be uniquely yours, in your pocket, something special to take home,
forever!
SARAH REICH
GIVE ME SOME OF THAT ROCK ‘N ROLL - Intermediate
Brock has his own unique style, fast, raw and filled with high energy. This
class will be fused with the world’s favorite music; exciting tapping to a
Rock n’ Roll soundscape.
HITTIN’ WITH SARAH (2 single classes)
Dance Magazine reports” “Watching tapper Sarah Reich dance is a lesson
in exuberance… she has an uncanny ability to balance the hard-hitting
syncopation of today’s rhythm tappers with a touch of confidence of the
tap legends.” Sarah is genuinely excited to be in Vancouver, especially
since she has brought along two completely different classes guaranteed to
make everyone thrilled to be a tapper!
TROY MCLAUGHLIN:
BROCK JELLISON
BLUES AND RHYTHMN - Advanced Beginner
Sas says: “I love the blues, they move me… and every single time I hear that
sweet low down sound coming from our studio I know it is Troy McLaughlin,
ROCK TAP
You could call it “Thrash Tap,” or whatever you like. But this class will be
jam-packed with high, raw energy and loud rock and roll rhythms.

Nov. 4 and 5
VTDS and Centennial Theatre co- presentation
Centennial Theatre - 7:30 pm
The undisputed master of tap dance Savion Glover makes his much- anticipated visit to Vancouver.
“Bare Soundz” will unleash a concentrated cavalcade of varied percussive footwork. The setting three heavily miked, island-like wooden platforms - is admirably unadorned and free of any trace
of showbiz glitz. Bearded, dreadlocked and casually dressed, Savion has developed a contemporary, funked-up and post-bebop street style that pays discreet homage to past masters while pushing his chosen form of expression into the future. After making his Broadway debut at the tender
age of 12 alongside Sammy Davis Jr., Savion Glover’s mastery of tap dance soon saw him shoot
to fame. Over the years he has worked on a truly diverse range of projects, from pop videos for
P Diddy to a film with Spike Lee, -not to mention picking up a Tony Award along the way.
