Dear Community,
We have created a Learning Resource Center (LRC) here in ACE room 9; this center is
open to all students at various times throughout the day. This is in response to the growing
need of “readiness” services for transitioning into a new job or moving on to college. Staff
members will be available to assist students in academic areas, computer learning, college
and career readiness, and so much more. Please see inside our catalogue for more details.
Any current student can utilize the Learning Resource Center.
We continue to upgrade our technology with a newly renovated computer lab in room 11
that is a dual boot (both Mac and Windows 8); an iPad lab for our high school diploma and
GED courses; and a new ESL class for beginning literacy students who will learn English
reading, writing and speaking as well as computer literacy; this is via a computer literacy
grant that we were awarded this spring.
We hope that you will join us and utilize some of this new equipment and services. And, if
you have additional suggestions, please email me at [email protected] or post on
the school Facebook page. If you have not “liked” our school Facebook page or the Principal’s
page please do so. You will receive regular school updates and may win a free class!
Welcome to 2013-2014. As always, it is a pleasure to be with you on your learning adventures,

Introduction
to Google Docs
Did you know that Google offers a complete online
set of document, presentation, spreadsheet tools, and
more? Once called “Google Docs” the suite of tools is
now called “Google Drive” and lets you develop, store,
use, and share your information via the Web. In this
class we will get an overview of the tools which make
up the Google Docs/Drive set and what features the
various tools have in common. You need to have a
Google account (gmail or PicasaWeb) so that you can
use the tools. (We can set you up in class if necessary.)
Google Docs/Drive works via a web browser, so they
work on PCs, Macs, smartphones, etc. A general
knowledge of your computer is expected, and laptops

Adult Secondary Education Program
Welcome to Adult Secondary Education (ASE)! Our ASE Program assists students in achieving
their adult high school diploma or GED and helps prepare them for the transition to college and/or
work. When you become a member of our ASE Program, the Transition Team will work with you
to help you with college and career goals while you are attending classes at the adult education school.
After taking a Placement Test, you will be scheduled for a counseling appointment with a member from our
Transition Team where you will develop a personalized academic schedule to meet your educational goals.
Students should plan to bring an official transcript from high school and any college transcript if courses have been
taken at a community college as an adult.
The ASE Program is organized around the following academic options: direct instruction in subject specific
courses; independent learning through web-based instruction (distance learning); or a combination of both
(blended instruction).
To enter any of the ASE programs you must do the following:
•You must take a Placement Test and meet with a Transition Counselor to determine academic needs and individualized class schedule.
•Pre-registration for the Placement Test is required with a non-refundable fee of $40.00.
•The next Placement Tests will be offered Tuesday August 20 at 11:00 AM, and Wednesday August 21 at 6:00 PM. Tests are offered quarterly for enrollment into the program.

recognized for the GED certificate. Beginning in January 2014, the GED will
become a computer-based test.
Please Note: Final official GED tests are administered at locations in Mountain View and San Jose for an additional fee.

Drawing & Watercolor
Skills in drawing and watercolor can be taught
and developed. Often we need to be trained to see
more effectively to develop our artistic abilities.
This class emphasizes learning how to see in
order to draw and paint. It teaches how edges,
relationships, light, spaces and shadows affect
the whole image. Students use different drawing
implements, different grounds, and different
coloring media to help develop perceptual skills.
Personal artistic interpretation is encouraged as
is working towards a finished piece. Beginners
are welcome, as well as those who would like
to go further with their art in a positive and
supporting environment. Instruction is tailored
to the individual. Materials are discussed in first
class and everyone should bring a 6 B pencil and
a drawing tablet. Sara has a Master’s degree in
Art Education and has taught for Fremont
Union Adult Ed.since 1977. Her work may be
seen at www.sarandippity.com. A materials fee

handwriting. Carolingian minuscule was
created under the patronage of Charlemagne;
the script was developed from the “Insular”

Clarence Howard
At Adult Education I’ve been given a great opportunity to finish
my high school education, and I attend classes at both DeAnza
and Adult Education. I have built an amazing relationship
with everyone here. They want the absolute best for me and
work just as hard as I do to help me reach my goals. Not only
have they helped me succeed, they have become a big part of
my life.

Diana Bebbington
I've had a lot of success through courses at the SunnyvaleCupertino Adult School. Several years ago I got my
Green Gardner certificate and it has greatly enhanced my
garden consulting business. It has brought me clients and
colleagues I network with who all agree to practice sound and
environmentally safe garden maintenance.
As I transitioned from landscape maintenance to garden
consulting I needed better computer skills, so for the last year
I have been taking the E-Learning Computer Lab series and
focusing on Word and Powerpoint.
Now, in addition to making presentations that promote what I can offer clients, I have also
made fun things like tributes to my parents and other family members. These classes require
dedication and regular attendance, but the staff, including the substitutes, are top notch and
impart a can-do attitude.
I am a grateful beneficiary.
