In 2016, we aim to make the content that was such a
hit last year an even more fulfilling experience.
Starting with new design ideas and lifestyle suggestions from each exhibitor, as well as a thorough factory tour.
The installation in the main convention space will be designed by Paris-based architect Tsuyoshi Tane (DGT), whose works
can be found all over the world. In addition, this year's official party will feature an abundance of Asahikawa's delicious food.
We are preparing an event that can be enjoyed by not just those in the interior/architecture/design/craft world, but by the
general public as well. This year Asahikawa Design Week aims to once more create a design "communication space" to
showcase the charm of Asahikawa's wooden furniture and spark conversation about the possibilities of local craftsmanship.

A collection of new designs and proposals for 2016 from
Asahikawa s proud woodworking industry
At this 62nd event held in Asahikawa in early summer, some of the major furniture manufacturers: Arflex
Japan, Time and Style, Takumi Kohgei, Mobel Toko, Isamiya, CONDE HOUSE, etc. launch new products made
through their advanced skills, design abilities, and collaboration with domestic and foreign designers.
Moreover, wood crafts and small wooden furniture by Cosine, Sasaki Kohgei, etc. add color to the event.

Kokonoki no Kagu Hokkaido Project
This is an initiative to build furniture with trees from Hokkaido forests, where furniture
m a n u f a c t u r e r s , i n a w i d e r a n g e o f c o l l a b o r a t i o n s w i t h g o v e r n m e nt b o d i e s , l u m b e r m i l l s ,
and material suppliers, aim at sustainable furniture manufacturing with hardwood from
Hokkaido, one of the most abundant areas with hardwood forests in Japan. A large
number of works made from Hokkaido wood by various companies can be seen
throughout at the Asahikawa Furniture Center.

Special Installation designed by architect Mr. Tsuyoshi Tane
(DGT)
Mr. Tane, having graduated from Tokai University in Asahikawa and being successfully active as an architect in
Paris, undertakes installation design at Asahikawa Furniture Center, the main venue of the event. Collaborating
with Kokonoki no Kagu Hokkaido Project (promoting furniture made from Hokkaido wood), we welcome you with
the in st allat ion repre s e nting a n i ma ge o f fur niture b e i n g “ b o rn ” f ro m t h e n a t u re .
Profile of Tsuyoshi Tane
1979: Born in Tokyo
2002 - 2005: Graduating from the department of architecture, faculty of engineering of the Hokkaido Tokai University, and gaining his careers
at the Royal Danish Academy, Henning Larsens Architects in Denmark, and Adjaye Associates in London
2006: Establishing his own business, DGT (DORELL.GHOTMEH.TANE / ARCHITECTS), with Dan Dorell (Italy) and Lina Ghotmeh (Lebanon) in
Paris, and internationally receiving attention by winning the 1st prize in the international competition for the design of the New Estonian
National Museum (completion in 2016) and being a finalist of the New National Stadium International Design Competition .
Present: Undertaking some projects mainly in Europe, winning a lot of awards such as the NAJAP French Ministry of Culture Architecture Prize,
Architects Association of Milan Prize, and MILAN DESIGN AWARD 2014 (two awards), and teaching at GSAPP, Columbia University.
Master pieces: A House for OISO, TORAYA PARIS, CITIZEN ‒ LIGHT is TIME, and so on.
Special exhibition of a collection by international chair
expert Mr. Noritsugu Oda
Mr. Noritsugu Oda (professor emeritus of Tokai University) is a renowned expert on chairs from around the world
and has a large collection of Scandinavian mid-century chairs from designers such as Hans J. Wegner, Borge
Mogensen and Finn Juhl. We will hold a special exhibition of his collection at the Chairs Gallery in Asahikawa,
wher e y ou can see h o w c ha i r de s i gns ha ve c ha ng e d o v e r t h e g e n e r a t i o n s.

Shuttle taxis make it easy to get around. More various participating
companies are offering factory tours, where you can see Asahikawa
woodworking technology and technique up close.
A l a r g e n u m b e r o f J a p a n ’s m o s t a d v a n c e d t e c h n o l o g i e s a n d f a c t o r i e s f o r p r o d u c i n g w o o d e n f u r n i t u r e
are concentrated in the Asahikawa area. We are working to revitalize our communities through design,
making use of the networks with Japanese and overseas designers that we have built through the
International Furniture Design Fair Asahikawa (IFDA), an event that has been held every three years
since 1990. We are also working to establish Asahikawa furniture as a brand through initiatives such
as participation in overseas exhibitions and development of products that target high-end furniture
mark e t s t hr o ugho u t th e wo rl d .
As the factories are scattered across a wide area around Asahikawa, we offer special taxis for you to
trav e l be t w e e n t h e f a c to ri e s.

Participant companies welcome visitors with various Asahikawa foods at their shops and factories. We

Meet all kinds of people at our official party at ADW bar
which received a lot of favorable comments last year.
The official party last year marked 600 visitors and received a lot of favorable comments. In order to welcome
more people this year, we will use as a party venue Asahikawa Taisetsu Crystal Hall which is the center of
citizen’s education, studies, art, and culture development to create an attractive and abundant local society.
