Ready. Set. Dig. That is exactly what University Health Systems
of Eastern Carolina officials and guests did June 14 when they
broke ground on the Children’s Hospital addition.
Maynard is the co-founder and chairman of Investors
Management Group, the parent company of Golden Corral
Corporation.
Dr. Ronald Perkin and Dr. David Rodeberg, who provide the
medical leadership for Children’s Hospital, joined with other
dignitaries in commemorating the start of construction for this
$48.2 million project. They were joined by dozens of miracle
children who have been served by the facility over the years.
The miracle children were among the first dignitaries to turn
spades full of sand symbolizing the beginning of the project.
“Connie and I have been blessed to be able to make this gift,
which will benefit children and families of eastern North
Carolina. This gift is possible because of the many loyal
customers of Golden Corral and the outstanding efforts of
Golden Corral associates every day,” Maynard said. Once
complete the addition will be called the James and Connie
Maynard Children’s Hospital.
The addition will provide dedicated space to meet the medical
needs of the smallest patients and their families – from newly
designed patient rooms to pediatric equipment and specially
trained staff. The new children’s hospital expansion is being
designed through the eyes of a child to be patient and family
friendly to support an environment of healing. This project is
estimated to be complete in 2013.
“We have a unique opportunity to expand our children’s
hospital to embody our philosophy of care, which places
children and their families at the center of everything we do.
This place will be more than concrete and steel; it will be a
place where miracles happen.”, Perkin said.
James and Connie Maynard of Raleigh are donating $9 million
to the addition project. A $1.5 million gift will go toward a
distinguished professorship in the Department of Pediatrics
within the Brody School of Medicine.
University Health Systems Children’s Hospital is the only
hospital in eastern North Carolina designed, equipped, and
staffed to care for children. Children’s Hospital is part of Pitt
County Memorial Hospital, the tertiary care center for 1.4
million people living in the health systems’ 29 county service
area.
A Day of Celebration Through the Eyes of a Child
June 14, 2011 was a memorable day for all the children in eastern North Carolina. The groundbreaking ceremony for the
James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital addition represents a crucial move towards a full-service children’s hospital.
This addition solidifies the vision and has been a key factor in the recruitment of pediatric subspecialists. Plans are
underway for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to be held in the summer of 2013. Until that time, much work will be done on
program development. We will keep you apprised of construction progress in upcoming editions of Peds Partners. We

Components of the Children’s Hospital Addition Project
This construction project encompasses a 78,000 square
foot addition and a 7,500 square foot renovation. It is
scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2013 and will
include the following components:
•
Development of a new, state of the art immunosuppressed unit to be called KISU. It will offer a
controlled environment for children with illnesses that
compromise the immune system.
•
Creation of a new 9-bed pediatric radiology
department and a pediatric outpatient facility.
•
Replacement and expansion of the Level II newborn
convalescent nursery. This will be a 21-bed unit, all
private rooms, for infants who no longer need critical
care.
•
Creation of a Ronald McDonald suite within the
Children’s Hospital to enable families to be close to
their hospitalized child. The existing Ronald McDonald
House, located across the street from the hospital, will
continue to provide homelike sleeping space for
families.
•
Development of an outside play/therapy yard
•
Renovation and expansion of the waiting area, family
resource center, and support space.
A key focus of this project is creating an environment
conducive to patient- and family-centered care. More than
a slogan, this philosophy has been the guiding force
behind pediatric care at Children’s Hospital for at least 25
years.
This is the first phase of a 6-story expansion expected to
cost $200 million when all phases are complete. It will
provide an environment in which top quality pediatric care,
medical education, and clinical research can flourish.
