CLUB CATALOGUE
The items in this catalogue were purchased primarily for use in our club by current members of
Trainers By Design. The usage policies below are listed in the order of priority (for example, a
member of Trainers by Design wanting to borrow a book to read will take priority over a
Toastmasters member from another club who wishes to borrow the same book).
Broadly speaking, the training tools at our club are there to help our members strengthen their
knowledge and delivery of training. Part of the objective of our club is also to improve the quality
of training in the District. These purposes help provide guidance as to appropriate use of the
resources where no specific policy exists to cover any unforeseen situation.

All items being borrowed require a bond to be
paid in the amounts listed. Bond is applicable to
each item being borrowed.
How can I borrow?
1. To request to borrow an item in this catalogue, please send an email at least 2 weeks prior
to the date you wish to pick up the item to: [email protected]
2. On the date of pick up, you will need to pay your deposit amount and be asked to sign a
register that confirms you have received the item(s) you are borrowing.
Returns Policy
- Books can be borrowed for up to 3 months. All other items must be returned within 1
month. Please be aware that returns after this time limit will forfeit their deposit.
- It is the responsibility of the borrower to return items on time.
- Goods returned with damage may forfeit some or all of the deposit paid plus additional
damages to cover the cost of replacing the item, at the discretion of the Resources
Manager receiving the returned item.

Members of Trainers by Design who have previously borrowed at least one item and returned it
in good condition may be eligible for a discount/waiver on future deposits if they submit a review
of the item they borrowed and what they learnt for the benefit of other members (can be written
or oral).

POLICY FOR USE BY CLUB MEMBERS IN COMMERCIAL CONTEXTS OUTSIDE OF TOASTMASTERS
Applies only to reusable items, books are not seen as belonging to this category
- Items can only be borrowed for this purpose ONCE by a member (if they wanted to
reuse an item they would be expected to purchase their own rather than repeatedly
utilising TBD resources for personal profit)
- The member submitting the request must have assisted at Speechcraft (as this is where
the money to purchase our tools came from) in one of the following ways:
i) Coordinator or Assistant Coordinator for a course; or
ii) Assistant/Helper at minimum 10 evenings (does not have to be consecutive)
OR alternatively, the member must be able to demonstrate a significant commitment of
time and resources to the club beyond simply attending meetings that makes them
eligible for this usage privilege.
- The member’s email request must outline the educational benefit derived from the use
of equipment outside the club, for example:
i) are they getting their training/speaking presentation signed off in a Toastmasters
manual by a fellow Toastmaster; or
ii) is there an identifiable learning outcome they will gain from the experience that will
benefit the club such as writing a newsletter article or delivering a short presentation
to other members?

programs, or verbal thank yous) and a short promotional statement about our club and
what we do to ensure mutual benefit is derived for both parties.

HOW WE LEARN

 People tend to misjudge what they have learned well, what they don't yet know, and

information without preparation. Babies might seem to be a counterexample, showing that you
can learn from scratch. However, you examine what newborns must know at birth in order for

Next you explore in depth how humans master different tasks, from learning a native language
or a second language, to becoming adept at a sport or a musical instrument, to learning a new
city or a problem-solving strategy, to grasping the distinctive style of thinking required in
mathematics and science. Then you look inside the learning process itself, where many factors
come into play, including what is being learned and the context, along with the emotions,
motivations, and goals of the learner. You close by considering individual differences. Some
people seem to learn without effort. How do they do it?
Tips on Learning
Along the way, Professor Pasupathi offers frequent advice on how to excel in many different
learning situations:
 Mastering material: Testing yourself is a very effective strategy for mastering difficult
material. Try taking a blank sheet of paper and writing down everything you can recall
about the subject. Then go back and review the material. Next, try another blank sheet
of paper.
 Second-language learning: Becoming fluent in a second language in adulthood is
difficult because your brain is tuned to your native language and misses important clues
in the new language. To overcome this obstacle, immerse yourself among native
speakers of the new language.
 Motivating a child: When trying to motivate a schoolchild to learn, avoid controlling
language, create opportunities to give the child a sense of choice, and be careful about
excessive praise and other forms of rewards, which can actually undermine learning.
 Maintaining a learning edge: Middle-aged and older adults can preserve their learning
aptitude by exercising to maintain cardiovascular health, staying mentally active, and
periodically trying a new challenge, such as learning to draw or studying new dance
steps.

lasts between 10 and 20 minutes and is an ideal way
of raising the awareness of a group of learners about
the pre-conceptions and assumptions we bring into
new situations. This is very valuable in problem-solving
or innovative thinking processes as it highlights how
we can limit our thinking and reject new possibilities if
they do not fit with our existing patterns.

been used worldwide to focus on the
fundamental skills of great two-way
communication and the achievement of shared
meaning. It is also used to explore team
problem-solving, team understanding of

Wearing blindfolds to ensure total dependence upon the quality of their verbal communication,
and holding a collection of small, irregular, coloured plastic shapes, a group works together to
gather information that will allow them to solve a puzzle. The size of the group (between 4 and
28) demands different types of skill: information and group management, effective listening and
questioning, strong chairing skills, the ability to clarify and summarize and the need for
feedback to ensure understanding.
The exercise can last for up to 40 minutes, with breaks for review and coaching, and generates
a large amount of discussion. The activity can greatly benefit employees working in remote

Task supervision: establishing and controlling a

This activity works well at first line supervisor level
