awesome books we have in the teen
section.
Teen Game Night is a chance for
you to get some free food while hanging out with friends. If you love video
games then challenge your friends
on our Nintendo Wii or play one of
the many board games that we have
available. Teen Game Night is the third
Wednesday of every month. We are
looking forward to our next one on
February 20 at 4:30pm.
At the Richwood Library, we love
graphic novels! Recently, we have
been expanding our Manga selection.
You can now check out books from
series such as Fullmetal Alchemist,
Naruto, Sailor Moon, Bleach, and more!

Major News for NUMS!!! VEX Competitors
HAVE qualified for the National Robotic
Competition in Anaheim, California. Three
Teams have made it and hoping for another team to make soon. Congrats to Mrs.

At about 10:30 a.m., four men burst into the SMC
Cartage Co. garage that Moran used for his illegal
business. Two of the men were dressed as police
officers. The quartet presumably announced a raid
and ordered the seven men inside the garage to line
up against a wall. Then they opened fire. Witnesses,
alerted by the rat-a-tat staccato of submachine guns,
watched as the gunmen sped off in a black Cadillac touring car that looked like the kind police used,
complete with siren, gong and rifle rack.The victims,
killed outright or left dying in the garage, included
Frank "Hock" Gusenberg, Moran's enforcer, and his
brother, Peter "Goosy" Gusenberg. Four of the other
victims were Moran gangsters, but the seventh dead
man was Dr. Reinhardt Schwimmer, an optician who
cavorted with criminals for thrills. Missing that morning was Capone's prize, Moran, who slept in.
Capone missed it due to vacationing at his retreat at
Palm Island, Fla., he had an alibi for his whereabouts
and disclaimed knowledge of the coldblooded killings. Few believed him. No one ever went to jail for
pulling a trigger in the Clark Street garage, which
was demolished in 1967.
The 6th grade hallway looks awesome. We
feel that it is unfair that the 7th grade hallway doesn’t have any pictures or paintings.
They have all the classrooms painted, the
only room painted for 7th grade is social
studies. We think it needs more color. Also,
we think that we should have pictures up
that are up to date. Because those pictures
are from last year, and there are none with
the new 6th graders. Look Below.

On this frigid morning, in an unheated brick garage
at 2122 N. Clark St., seven men were lined up against
a whitewashed wall and pumped with 90 bullets
from submachine guns, shotguns and a revolver. It
was the most infamous of all gangland slayings in
America, and it savagely achieved its purpose--the
elimination of the last challenge to Al Capone for
the mantle of crime boss in Chicago. By 1929, Capone's only real threat was George "Bugs" Moran,
who headed his own gang and what was left of Dion
O'Banion's band of bootleggers. Moran had long
despised Capone, mockingly referring to him as "The
Beast."

Valentine’s Day Massacre’ and thought you all may
be interested as I am in the Al CaPone character. In
7th grade we read ‘Al Capone Does My Shirts’ and I
wanted to learn more about Al Capone. Talk about a
character! Almost all books and movies have a bad
character and this one well you check it out.

Candy Bar Sales

According to Mrs. Chapman, as of right now
we have sold 8,600 candy bars. The reason
that we sell candy bars is to raise money fo
our rewards, parties, assemblies, scholarships,
celebrations and many more. Mrs. Chapman
is selling the final peanut butter bars at the
window there are about 500 left. We have
been selling candy bars for many, many years.
The most bars we have ever sold has been
over 15,000 candy bars. Mrs. Martin really appreciates everyones effort of making candy
bar sales a success year after year. We will have
rewards and special prize winners in the March
edition. What yummy news!

The first llamas lived on the plains of North
America. When the first Ice Age came, however, llamas migrated to South America and
made their home in the Andean Mountains.
3,000-4,000 years ago llamas were first domesticated in the highlands of Peru. That
makes them some of the oldest domesticated
animals in the world! Llamas were worshipped
by the Incas, they called them their “silent
brother”. Between 1800-1900, private collectors and zoos brought llamas back into
North America. Today, there are almost seven
million llamas and alpacas in South America
and 80,000-10,000 in the United States and
Canada.
An average adult weight for a llama is
between 250 and 400 pounds and they live
about 20 years. A properly trained llama can
carry 25-30% of its own body weight. They are
easy to take care of, they usually forage for
their own food and only minor supplementation is needed. They can cost less to feed than
a dog! A single acre of land can support 2-4
llamas if there is sufficient plant life. Llamas
are very calm and gentle, and their fur can be
woven into yarn to make sweaters, blankets,
hats, anything!

sky. And in the tangled lanes of Prague, a young
art student is about to be caught up in a brutal otherworldly war. Meet Karou. She fills her
sketchbooks with monsters that may or may not
be real; she’s prone to disappearing on mysterious “errands” and her bright blue hair actually
grows out of her head that color. Who is she? That
is the question that haunts her, and she’s about
to find out. When one of the strangers--beautiful,
haunted Akiva--fixes his fire-colored eyes on her
in an alley in Marrakesh, the result is blood and
starlight, secrets unveiled, and a star-crossed
love whose roots drink deep of a violent past. But
will Karou live to regret learning the truth about
her and herself? She is one girl that you do not
want to mess with.
When I first read this book I found it very entertaining. Through the loving passion of Karou and
Akiva; to the “Itch’ of Karou ex-boyfriend. This
book is more than a good read but it is very hard
to but this book down. You can find Daughter of
Smoke and Bone and it squeal is called Days of
Blood and Starlight at the local Richwood Public Library here in town. Both books are a great
catch to read.
The Super Bowl

This year’s Super Bowl was a
battle of the Baltimore Ravens and
San Francisco 49ers. The coaches
being brothers, the Harbaugh brothers are crazy. The game was aired
on CBS. Performances by Alicia Keys
and Beyonce were awesome. The
49ers were favored as the predicted
victors of Super Bowl XLVII, but the
Ravens won!
The first Super Bowl was played
between the Packers and Chiefs. The
Packers ended up winning and, this
was a great event in history for the
Cheese Heads. Since then, the Packers have had three additional victories in the Super Bowl. The Pittsburg Steelers have the most Super
Bowl victories in history with six.
However, there are four teams who
have never been in a super bowl.
Those teams include The Cleveland
Browns, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Detroit Lions. See
our random school survey of students and staff for the favorite Super Bowl commercials on page 7.
Movie Reviews

There are several new movies coming out this February
and I am going to help tell you which ones look best in
my opinion from looking at the trailers. At the bottom of
the poster is a link to watch the trailer. It is always fun to
go see a movie occasionlly and these are all rated pg. I
thought these three were good movies, The Croods and
Oz The Great and powerful are my favorites. Escape From
Planet Earth is ok. This is just my opinion, you’ll have to go
see them yourself to find out what you think.
The best family/school appropriate movies coming out
this year are:

Warm Bodies

When I went to see the movie Warm Bodies I was there to enjoy a movie about a Zombie.
Though when I got there I found that the movie
was more. It was more than just a brain eating kind
of movie it was more of a romantic comedy. With R
being the first of the corpse to go back to humans
it is up to him and the Human named Julie to turn
back the entire corpse that they can. The only problem is the bones, the last stage of being a zombie.
This movie was not only a funny and adventurous movie but this movie was very heartwarming
to the whole movie theater. The only thing that
would make this movie bad would be if it was just
a poorly copy of Twilight, though the only connection between the two is the company that had
produced it. One of the things that most people do
not know is that it is based on a book called Warm
Bodies by Isasc Marion. When I did see the movie
it was only after it when I found out that there is
a book that the movie is based. After reading it I
found that they did a pretty good job making it
similar and not all the way off the wall like other
books that get turned into movies. I would suggest
reading the book before seeing the movie.
The Memory Games

A Google A Day is a program created by Yahoo!, I
mean Google. It’s like the website Lumosity which
can improve brain functions, memory, etc. It includes topics such as history, sports, and arts and
literature. It has achievements and badges that you
can get for your Google+ account. SO that means
that you’ll have to have a Google+ account to play
A Google A Day, but it’s free brain training exercises.
Lumosity is a more advanced version of A Google
A Day. With memory, reflex, and control, Lumosity has a survey that you can take to find out how
you need and want to improve your brain. More
popularized that the Google program, it’s not free
however. It’s $9.99 a month for a year if you want
to have a popular and more advanced version of
memory games.
Well of course to first find out if you need to improve your mind, take a simple IQ test.
EXTRA, EXTRA, READ ALL ABOUT IT!
ASTEROID TO NARROWLY MISS EARTH!
It’s a BIRD, it’s a PLANE, NO it’s an ASTEROID!
There is an asteroid that is supposed to go
by Earth on February 15th. It’s the closest
asteroid to pass by Earth (except the one that
wiped out the dinosaurs). It’s a good thing
we have a long weekend so we can all sleep
all day Friday then stay up all night partying,
I mean watching the asteroid. The piece of
space rock will be traveling eight times faster
than a bullet from a high powered rifle. Well
turns out we won’t be able to see it from here
but if you really really want to see it, it might
be worth the flight. The asteroid is 150ft
across but don’t worry its not going to damage any of the 400 telescopes in space.

Global Warming = NO SNOW DAYS!!

The lack of snow days from cancelations made by the school may have
been because of global warming.
So I decided to do some metaphorical
digging. I searched ‘global warming’ as
well as ‘no snow’ and found some theories to if or if not global warming has
affected the lack of snow days.
All of the below posted information is
from the Environmental Defense Fund
website. What warms the Earth?
To determine what is causing today’s
rapid global warming, scientists have
examined all the factors that can affect the Earth’s temperature. There
are essentially three factors that could
be responsible for recent rapid global
warming:
1.
The sun
2.
Earth’s reflectivity
3.
Greenhouse gases
All the evidence points to greenhouse
gases. That leaves the greenhouse effect as the only remaining scientific explanation for the rise in global temperatures in recent decades. We have direct
measurements of CO2concentrations in
the atmosphere going back more than
50 years, and indirect measurements
(from ice cores) going back hundreds
of thousands of years. These measurements confirm that concentrations are
rising rapidly.
That’s 30% more than the highest natural levels over the past 800,000 years.
So, in conclusion, if we cut down on
our CO2/greenhouse gases, we will cut
down on global warming, eventually
leading to… SNOW DAYS!!!

Some wrestle districts which are those in
the Top 4. They have the opportunity to
continue practice during Open Mats. With
only 7 on the team they were forced to
have multiple forfeits, and so their overall
team record was not significant. Hopefully,
next year you can get more to participate.

It’s a Fishy Fish World!

Starfish are also known as sea stars.
There are over 2,000 species of starfish.
Starfish are about 5 to 10 inches, and can
weigh 11 lbs. If a starfish is chopped into
pieces, each piece can grow a whole new
starfish. Starfish can have four or more
arms, some have 12, but most have 5
arms. Starfish do not have brains. Starfish’s body has no blood. Starfish are not
completely blind, even though they do
not have eyes. Starfish sense light and
shapes through an eyespot (an organ
sensitive to light) located at the tip of
their arms.
Like the starfish or sea star, sand dollars are “Echinoderms”. They are in the
same family as sea urchins. They are usually blue or purple, they are covered in
spines, and they have tiny “tube feet” that
they use to dig in the sand. They crawl on
the ocean floor sucking up microscopic
organisms with their mouths.

hat’s right, It’s that time again! That time
when we bring you EXPLOSIONS FROM
THE PAST. Wait, Blasts from the Past? Oh
well. This time we bring you the Nifty Nintendo 64!
It’s time for, Say it with us; A Blast From The Past!!
The Nintendo 64 (Also called the N64) came along
in 1996, when It was first released in Japan. And get
this: On the first day it came to shelves, It sold over
500,000 Units! Can you say, “Whaaaaaat”? In total,
the N64 sold 32.93 million units, which is pretty amazing! But, not-so-surprisingly, the game that has sold
the most copies is Super Mario 64 with 11.92 million
worldwide.
h, and just to prove that everybody
makes mistakes, The Legend Of Zelda:
Ocarina Of Time is one of the best selling
Nintendo 64 games out there, and on the
back of the original box they accidentally
spelled ‘Environments’ as ‘Enivironments’. Don’t try to
tell us you noticed, either. Other popular titles included
Conker’s Bad Fur Day, Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker
& Majora’s Mask and Hey You, Pikachu! That’s not in
order, though. A list of them is on (en.wikipedia.org/

When the N64 first came out, it was announced that
they would be coming out with an add on! Everyone
got extremely excited and the company said it would
come out around 2000, so when 2002 hit and there
was still no game expansion, people got mad. But
everything turned out dandy when the company FINALLY released it around 2006-2007. But here’s the
funny thing; Even though literally millions of people
were excited for the product, only about 1000 sold.
That was mostly because the cost for the pack was
the exact same as the N64 itself. In some places, even
HIGHER!

This Month In Rox!

What is Rox? Rox is a seventh and
eighth grade girls program, that teaches girls
how to deal with bullying, girl bullying, sexting, harassment, and teaches self defense.
Mrs. Mariucci is the staff leading this program.
The girls are going into self defense
on Monday the eleventh. Some examples
are heel palm strike, making someone back
off, and shin kick. All of these things can disable an attacker. These girls can use these
against that are sexualy, metaly, or physical
harassing them. As Mrs. Mariucci said, “If
you girls were the skinniest, little things, you
could take down a 200 pound, 6 foot 5 inch
man.”

Information: All you have to do is perform a random act of kindness. Almost anything will work. I highly recommend that you do
this, for anyone. It is a really nice thing to do. Teachers have used
this day to promote and educate students about Kindness. Organizations have also used this day to promote fundraises and the
cause.

The Sixth Grade Boys North Union Wildcats
Basketball Teams have been expertly coach
by Mr. Burggraf and assisted by Mr. Ahern for
the 2012-2013 season. A total The black and
orange Wildcat teams played opponents from
the Marion League, including River Valley,
Pleasant, Elgin, Harding, Northmor, and RIdgedale. The boys used a transition and half-court
offense and are tentatively playing in the
upcoming Cardington Tournament. The last
game is at home this weekend, February 23
at NUMS at 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. Coach Burggraf said he "saw improvement in every single
player and can't wait to see the players compete next year as seventh graders representing
North Union Middle School."

Eat Your Heart Out

This is what you’ll need:
1 can of sweetened condensed milk,
3 packages of red flavored gelatin,
2 envelopes of unflavored gelatin.
Get Started:
First, Dissolve one package of flavored gelatin in 3/4 cup boiling water.
Add 3/4 cup cold water, then pour the it
into a glass pan and refrigerate for 1 hour.
Then, Stir together 1/2 cup boiling water
and the condensed milk.
In a separate bowl, dissolve all the unflavored gelatin in ½ cup cold water for 1 to 2
minutes. Next, mix in 3/4 cup boiling water,
then combine this mixture with the milk
and let it cool.
Add half the mixture to the pan of red gelatin, pouring it over a spatula to slow the
stream, and refrigerate for 20 minutes.
Finally, Continue alternating layers — gelatin mix, the remaining milk mix, the final
gelatin mix — chilling each for 20 to 30
minutes for it to settle. Create individual
servings with a heart-shaped biscuit or
cookie cutter, and you should have this:
