•
Ahern receives Porce Medal Superintendent Fred Rice present
ed 34 officers and two citizens top De
partment honors at the 23rd Annual Po
lice Recognition Ceremony held in the
Arie Crown Theater of McCormick
Place May 21.
Two officers were honored post
humously.
The annual event is our Depart
ment's tribute to officers who have dis
tinguished themselves, and the Depart
ment, by heroic deeds, or by performing
outstanding accomplishments the past
year.
Mayor Harold Washington ad
dressed the assembly and congratulated
the award recipients, and a memorial
roll was read by Rev. Wilbur N. Daniel.
Entertainment was provided by
comedian George Kirby, the Frank
York Orchestra, song-sty list Christine
Corelli, tap dance artiste Archie Taylor,
'the blues group, The Vanessa Davis
Band, and bass Mark Doss, of the Lyric
Opera Center for American Artists.
WGN Radio personalities Bob Collins
and Tom Peterson shared master of
ceremonies duties with Chicago Sun
Tilles columnist Irv Kupcinet, who was
also honored at the ceremony.
However, the highlight of the
evening was the presentation of the De
partment's highest award, the Police
Medal, awarded to officers whose ac
complishments are so outstanding as to
justify special recognition .
The recipient of this year's Po
lice Medal was Officer James Ahern,
15th District , for his courageous actions
during a gun battle one night last win
ter.
Ahern, while off-duty and talking
to a friend in a tavern, observed two
men wearing ski masks walk into the es

tablishment and enter the restroom. A
third man, armed with a shotgun ,
then walked in, held his weapon to a
patron's neck, and announced a holdup .
Ahern qUickly drew his revDlver and
fatally wounded the gunman.
Suddenly, the other two offenders
ran from the washroom and fired at the
officer, wounding him in the lower back
and thigh . Ahern's friend also was
wounded . The officer returned the fire
and wounded one offender in the chest.
The third gunman continued his
fire until he was also wounded by
Ahern, who had retrieved his auxiliary
revolver stored behind the bar. The two
wounded offenders fled the tavern but
were apprehended a short distance
away by responding units.
Ahern was also presented the Su
perintendent's Award of Valor, awarded
to officers for outstanding acts of hero
ism, personal courage and devotion to
duty; and the Police Blue Star Award,
presented to officers wounded in the
line of duty.
Every year, the Police Medal re
cipient is unaware of the honor until
just prior to the presentation of the
award.
"The feeling is unbelievable and
impossible to put into words," said
Ahern. ''To be recognized by your
peers makes an award particularly
special. Eor years I have heard other
officers speak of the Police Medal being
the Department's highest award, and
now to have been presented the medal

is very humbling. The day following the
ceremony, my head was still spinning."
The Award of Valor and Polic(;
Blue Star were presented to the families
of Officers Dorelle Brandon, 3rd Dis
trict, and Fred Eckles, 6th District, both
killed in the performanc'e of duty.
Brandon was the first policewoman in
the history of the Department to be
killed in the line of duty .
After making a "controlled drug
buy", Brandon announced her office
and told the offender he was ' under
arrest. The offender suddenly lunged
and grabbed Brandon by the arms . Her
partner, responding to her call for help,
ran to the scene but was prevented from
entering because of locked burglar bars.
Fearing for his partner's life, the officer
fired twice and accidentally shot
Brandon, who later died from the
wound. The offender was apprehended
and charged with murder.
Eckles, along with other officers,
attempted to serve a search warrant on
an apartment where undercover officers
previously had purchased narcotics.
Eckles was wounded in the face, neck
and abdomen but managed to fire twice
before he fell in an exchange of gunfire
with three offenders in the apartment.
An offender, hidin&, behind a couch, was

New flag honors veterans
Former Marines, Officer Jerry Farrell, Mass Transit Section, and Sergeant James
Griffin, Auto Theft Section, raise new POW/MIA flag donated by Mrs. Mary Carol
Lemon, at Vietnam Veterans Monument at Wacker Drive and Wabash Avenue. Flag
flies 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Mrs. Lemon, who replaced tattered flag, is
mother of Lt. Col. Jeffrey C. Lemon, missing Air Force pilot, who was shot down in
Laos on April 25,1971.
Police Officer of the Month
The Police Officer of the Month
Award has been conferred upon Officers
Richard Robinson, Abraham Taylor and
Edward Gilmore, 3rd District ; Detec
tives Norbert Holzinger and Bernard
Richter, Area 6 Violent Crimes; Offi
cers Robert Lopez and Clifford Mor
land, 23rdDistrict; and Sergeant Larry
Williams and Officers Michael Coons
and Lawrence Roebuck, 7th District ;
for outstanding police work in three
separate incidents.
Robinson, Gilmore -and Taylor re
sponded to a hold-up alarm at a restau
rant and observed an offender pointing'
a gun at the employees while stuffing
money into his pockets with his other
hand. Concerned about the safety of
the citizens, the officers waited until
they were out of danger before an
nouncing their office and placing the
gunman under arrest.
A second offender, who served as
a look-out, was arrested a short di~
tance away.
A woman had been raped by three
offenders and her apartment set on fire.
After being supplied with a description
and other information from the victim,
8
Lopez and Morland arrested an offender
who later admitted ' his involvement in
the crime and named one of his accom
plices . The second offender was also
arrested and both were charged with
rape, home invasion and arson.
Richter and Holzinger later learn
ed that one of the arrested offenders
had bragged about killing women after
first tying, raping and then placing
them in a bathtub . 13y using their
skills of interrogation , the detectives
were able to solve two brutal murders,
and were investigating four other mur
ders fitting the same pattern .
Williams, Coons and Roebuck
learned that an offender, who had just
shot three men, had run into a base
ment. As the officers approached the
basement the offender suddenly pushed
open the door and began firing his
weapon .
The officers returned the gunfire,
fatally wounding the offender. During
the exchange , Williams was wounded in
the chest and recovered after receiving
medical attention. Two of the victims .
died of their gunshot wounds .

I'd like to toot his horn. Willis, his mother
and her union learned of a mother in our
district who could not afford funeral ex
penses for her young daughter, an innocent
victim of a gang shoo, tout. Willis and the
others got together and , provided funds for
the woman so that ' her daughter could have
a proper burial. Thank you all so much for
caring. . . Jogging and weight lifting go' well
together. Just ask T. Brunson... For all you

L.T. has lost something very valuable. It may
be large, it may be small, it has at least two, '
or nothing at all. But whosoever finds it can
give her a call. .. HAPPINESS IS: Waking up
and NOT finding another wrinkle; getting to
work and discovering the watch commander is
also 20 minutes late; returning home and
finding out your family has not moved (or
maybe it's returning home and finding out
your family HAS!) . . . Police have been
