Mission
MOTHER McAULEY LIBERAL ARTS HIGH SCHOOL is a Catholic educational community
committed to providing a quality secondary education for young women. In the tradition of the
Sisters of Mercy and their foundress, Catherine McAuley, we prepare students to live in a complex,
dynamic society by teaching them to think critically, communicate effectively, respond compassionately
to the needs of their community and assume roles of Christian leadership. In partnership with parents,
we empower young women to acknowledge their giftedness and to make decisions with a well-developed
moral conscience. We foster an appreciation of the diversity of the global community and a quest for
knowledge and excellence as life-long goals.
ABOUT McAULEY
A small group of Mercy Sisters arrived in Chicago in 1846, led by Frances Warde, Catherine McAuley's
closest friend. Within weeks they opened a "select school" that became St. Francis Xavier Academy for
Females, the first school chartered in the city of Chicago. The course of study covered primary,
secondary and collegiate levels. The first building was located on Wabash Avenue between Madison and
Monroe Streets. When the Chicago Fire in 1871 destroyed the original building, St. Francis Academy
relocated to 29th and Wabash for a short time, then to a larger site at 49th and Cottage Grove in 1900.
In the 1950's, the southwest side of Chicago needed a Catholic girls' school to serve a fast-growing
population. In 1956 "the Academy" relocated once again. Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School
and St. Xavier College (which is now a university) opened in the fall of 1956 to serve secondary and
post secondary students respectively. McAuley opened with 523 students, 300 of which were first year
students. McAuley has continued to expand. Today approximately 1400 young women and 150 faculty
and staff members form the McAuley community.
CHARISM
Mother McAuley was dedicated to serving those in need. She had strong faith, courage and initiative.
Others joined her and worked with her because they too believed in the dignity of all persons. They also
believed that one must work actively to make the world a better place in which to live.
CHALLENGE
The young women of Mother McAuley High School have inherited a great tradition and a great
challenge. They are challenged to preserve the faith and make it grow, to have the courage to live by the
Catholic values they believe in, to take the initiative to be women of the 21st century - educated women
who will respond to the needs of others. The faculty, staff and administration share in Mother McAuley's
call to educate young women. The challenge for the future requires the commitment of each person who
helps form the community of Mother McAuley High School.
SERVICE
Service is an essential dimension of the mission of the school. Through direct service and with
reflection, students respond compassionately to the needs of the community and critically reflect on
needed societal systemic change.
Giving Thanks
We are pleased to present the Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School
2010 Annual Report. This past school year marks the completion of our
164th year of Catholic education in the Mercy tradition. We are grateful to
the Sisters of Mercy for entrusting us with their mission to develop young
women as confident, well-educated and strong leaders for the future.
Nancy Hill-Davis
Chair, Board of Trustees
We are truly thankful for the generous financial support from our board,
Sisters of Mercy, alumnae, parents, faculty, staff, friends, and neighbors.
We need to ensure that a McAuley education remains within the financial
reach of our students by keeping tuition rates affordable and by providing
financial assistance to those families that need help. This delicate balance
can only be accomplished through our ongoing partnership with individuals
and organizations.
Given their rigorous liberal arts education, we are confident that our
graduates are thoroughly prepared for college. The Class of 2010 has the
proud distinction of having achieved a 100% college acceptance rate.
They also received over $23 million dollars in college scholarship funds.
In fact, we believe that each of our alumnae enjoys a “Lifetime of
Advantages” as a result of their unique McAuley experience.
Christine Melone, Ed.D.,
President/Principal
In this Annual Report, we will acknowledge our supporters, present our
financial results, and share some stories of our success at McAuley.
Whether you are a donor, alumna, parent or friend, we are certain that
Mother McAuley has touched your heart in some way. Please continue
to support and/or participate in our sacred mission and help us spread the
message of Catherine McAuley to others.
We wish you and your family a Happy Thanksgiving, a Merry Christmas and
in the words of Catherine: “Provident God, pour out your blessings on our
benefactors. Their goodness has encouraged us; their gifts have enhanced our
efforts to recreate your merciful presence in our world. In gratitude, we ask you
to reward them with signs of your generous love and, when their lives on
earth are over, to welcome them to your heavenly banquet. Amen.”

A Celebration of Giving
The name Celebration, given to Mother McAuley’s largest fundraiser, is all encompassing. The literal
definition of celebration is the essence of what the Mother McAuley premier event stands for: to show
happiness that something special has happened by eating and drinking together or playing music. At Mother McAuley’s
annual Celebration Endowment Fundraiser, we celebrate our honorees, donors, guests and our school
community as a whole.
Our Honorees
During the Celebration event, we
honor individuals who exemplify
the charism and values of Catherine
McAuley; carry on the tradition
of the Sisters of Mercy; and
demonstrate an ongoing
commitment to our mission.
We honor these individuals with

and Co-Chair Robert B. Kuenster
This year the Catherine McAuley
Leadership Award was presented to Archdiocese of Chicago Auxiliary Bishop Gustavo Garcia-Siller* for his
support of the mission of the school in providing a quality Catholic liberal arts education for young women.
Board of Trustee Chair Nancy Hill-Davis said, “We at Mother McAuley commend Bishop Gustavo for his
tremendous contributions to our community, our school and most importantly the girls of McAuley.”
Ms. Laura Shallow, Class of 1975, was honored with the Distinguished Alumna Award at this year’s event.
For more than three decades, she has supported Mother McAuley High School’s mission, most recently as the
Chair of the Board of Trustees. “Laura fosters the mission of the Sisters of Mercy and of Catherine McAuley in
every action. Laura also embraces a true commitment to providing a quality secondary education for young
women in a Catholic educational community. Mother McAuley is a better place today and will be a better
place tomorrow because of Laura,” said Mr. Michael Nielsen, Vice Chair, Board of Trustees.
Our Donors
We give thanks and pay tribute to our donors for their selfless support of the young women of Mother
McAuley. The support of their time, talents and resources made Mother McAuley’s Celebration a true
success. Key supporters of Celebration 2010 included Event Sponsor Fifth Third Bank; Décor Sponsor HR
Imaging/Root Studios; Valet Parking Sponsor Henry Bros. Construction; Entertainment Sponsor The
Lombard Company; Invitation and Program Sponsor Sheila King Marketing and Public Relations; Floral
Design Sponsor Robert. B. Kuenster/Country Daisy Flowers; and Lighting Sponsor Bigane Paving Company.
Through the generous support of these donors and many more, McAuley was able to boost the tuition
assistance endowment and provide young women an opportunity to benefit from an outstanding education
in the tradition of the Sisters of Mercy.

Our Guests
The pre-dinner hour was abuzz as guests had a chance to mingle, meet the honorees, and enjoy cocktails
and appetizers. Included among the guests were members of the Sisters of Mercy, Mother McAuley’s Board
of Trustees, Chip Reeves of Fifth-Third Bank, Cook County Sheriff Thomas J. Dart, Evergreen Park Mayor
James Sexton, administration from Brother Rice High School and Saint Xavier University, and McAuley
alumnae and friends.
The cocktail reception was held in Mother McAuley’s newly renovated student lounge which offers a
beautiful view of Catherine’s Garden. Following the cocktails, guests moved into the beautifully
transformed gym complete with elegant flowers, lighting and table settings. Dinner was provided by
Jewell Catering, music by City Lights Orchestra, and artful decorations from Country Daisy Flowers.
Given the resounding success of the 2010 Celebration Endowment Fundraiser, it's hoped Mother McAuley
can build upon the momentum and provide additional financial assistance for our students.
* Bishop Garcia was elevated to Archbishop of San Antonio in October 2010.

Carrying on the Tradition of Giving
The St. Xavier Academy/Mother McAuley Alumnae Association, Mothers Club and Fathers Club are
three organizations that demonstrate the true spirit of giving back. The members of these groups are all
volunteers who give generously of their time, talents and resources to ensure that future generations of
young women can benefit from a McAuley education.
Members of the McAuley Alumnae Association, Mothers Club and Fathers Club co-sponsored the
Party with the Pageant fundraiser.
Alumnae Association
The St. Xavier Academy/Mother McAuley Alumnae Association was established to foster the growth of
Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School for future generations. Graduates are encouraged to keep in
contact with their school, their former teachers and classmates. The Alumnae Association supports
Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School by sponsoring several annual events including the Alumnae
Golf Outing which raises money for financial assistance. The Association also coordinates the Legacy
Family Mass and Brunch, the Alumnae Volleyball League and publishes Inscape, the alumnae newsletter.
Golf Outing
Thank you for your continuous support of the McAuley Alumnae Board’s annual Putt ’n Party Golf
Outing. This event raises money for the Alumnae Tradition of Excellence Scholarship Fund which
provides financial assistance to incoming Legacy Students. A Legacy Student is the daughter, granddaughter
or niece of women who graduated from St. Xavier Academy or Mother McAuley. The outing includes
nine holes of golf at Stony Creek Golf Course in Oak Lawn, followed by a buffet, raffle drawings and
dance music. In addition to golfing, proceeds are generated through the support of local sponsors.
McAuley would like to thank the following donors for their generous support: the Martin Family,

MOTHERS CLUB
The Mother McAuley Mothers Club has as its purpose the fostering of good home/school communication and
enriched Mother/Daughter relations. Through the Vendor Fair, Annual Spring Luncheon and Fashion Show
and other social events, the Mothers Club gives financial support to the school.
• McAuley Buses
McAuley students are riding in style thanks to donations from
the Mothers Club and a private donor. Through the generous
support of these donors, Mother McAuley was able to purchase
two 14-passenger buses to use for student activities and
sporting events.
• Vendor Fair
The annual “Ladies Night Out” Vendor Fair hosted by the
Mother McAuley’s new buses
Mother Club brings in vendors from the community for a
pre-Christmas shopping event. The Mothers Club raises money
through table fees for the vendors and a nominal entrance fee. Patrons can enjoy a delightful evening while
contributing to the fundraising efforts of the Mothers Club.
• Fashion Show
The Mother Club annually welcomes nearly 900 mothers, daughters, aunts and grandmothers to one of their
biggest fundraisers of the year. Guests enjoy an afternoon of delicious food, fabulous fashions from local specialty
stores, and more than 100 wonderful gift baskets and raffle prizes. Fashions were modeled by members of the
McAuley community.
• Alumnae Mothers Chapter
The mothers of McAuley graduates have created a chapter of the Mothers Club for those who choose to continue
their association with McAuley after their daughters have moved on to college. Their mission is raising funds for
student financial aid. Their main fundraising method is running the Macs Ltd. Store. The store is run by a staff of
volunteers and leading the effort is Mrs. Joan Claussen.
FATHERS CLUB
The Mother McAuley Fathers Club is dedicated to fostering good relations between dads and daughters through
activities of a social and spiritual nature. Events include Father/Daughter Golf, Father/Daughter Liturgy, and
other activities. Moreover, through sales of raffle tickets, the Fathers Club contributes support for students in
need of financial aid.
• Freshman Family Picnic/ Tuition Raffle
Six years ago, the Fathers Club began hosting the Freshmen Family Picnic to welcome incoming freshmen and
their families. In addition to the food, games and music provided by the McAuley
Fathers Club, the winner of the Tuition Raffle is announced that day. The raffle is
one of the Fathers Club’s biggest fundraisers of the year.
• White Sox Game
Not only does this major Fathers Club event show support for the White Sox, but
the proceeds help raise money for financial aid. Fans are able to purchase game
tickets for the designated McAuley Night and get a chance to see a “player’s view”
of the stadium while walking around the warning track before the game.

The Spirit of Giving
Through their service work, the students at McAuley follow in the
footsteps of the Sisters of Mercy and embrace the spirit of Catherine
McAuley. The stories on the following pages highlight only a few of
the many ways McAuley students, faculty and staff answer the
call to help those in need.
Mercy Day
On Mercy Day, Mother McAuley
recognizes members of the community
who exemplify the charisms of Catherine
McAuley. The 2009 honorees were
seniors Colleen Healy and Paige Travis,
and staff members Vicki Nettle and
Paul Rossetti.
“Catherine McAuley, foundress of the
Sisters of Mercy, was a pioneer for her
Paige Travis and
time. With courage and determination,
Colleen Healy
she made a commitment to educate
young women and teach them how to be women of faith by serving
others. Colleen and Paige embody these traits and represent the
giving spirit of all our students.” said Dr. Christine Melone,
President/Principal of Mother McAuley.
Colleen and Paige are both caring individuals who are always willing
to help others. Outside of school, Colleen volunteers for the Su Casa
House which assists families displaced by violence in Central
America; she attended the Peace
Builders Initiative where she
developed a peace project to help
children with cancer; and she has
received the Girl Scout Silver Award
for collecting clothes, toys and books
for a women and children’s shelter.
In addition to her many McAuley
Dr. Christine Melone, Vicki
activities, Paige volunteers with the
Nettle and Paul Rosetti
Special Olympics, is a member of the
hospitality committee at her church,
and participated in the 2009 NASA Students Pursuing Academic
and Career Excellence (NSPACE) Summer Research Program at
Chicago State University. She is the daughter of McAuley
alumna Alvenna Ward, Class of 1978, and Paige’s essay won

Staff honorees and building managers Vicki Nettle and Paul
Rossetti are an integral force behind the scenes at Mother
McAuley. The care and concern they show for even the smallest
of tasks exemplify their true love of McAuley and its community.
They selflessly give their time and energy to keep the students,
faculty, staff and Sisters of Mercy safe, and ensure McAuley is
running smoothly at all times.
Operation Haiti and the EcoMacs
The students in the
EcoMacs Club began
building a solarpowered biodiesel
processor in November
2009 with the
intention of donating
it to a school in Haiti
months before the
The McAuley EcoMacs Operation Haiti team
region suffered the
devastating earthquake.
The students designed a processor that would combine a natural
resource with a natural energy source to create a sustainable system
for producing fuel. The natural resource is the seed of the Jatropha
plant which grows abundantly in Haiti. The solar powered
processor will heat the oil rich seeds of the Jatropha plant. Once
heated, the oil is easily extracted, mixed with Methaoxide and
agitated in order to separate the glycerin byproduct from the oil.
Once the glycerin is removed, the pure biodiesel fuel created can
be used by farmers in their tractors. The glycerin byproduct will
also generate a source of income for the village since it can be used
as fertilizer and made into soap. Any excess energy generated by
the solar panels for the biodiesel processor will be used to provide
electricity for the school. The hope is that with electricity, students
beyond sixth grade can continue their education by attending
classes at night. The young women in the EcoMacs Biodiesel Team
have learned much more than just the steps in building a biodiesel
processor. These students have learned how their work goes beyond
the streets of Chicago and will impact the people of Pichon, Haiti
for generations. The EcoMacs have received national attention for
their hard work including being named a 2010 Grand Prize
Winner in the prestigious Lexus Eco Challenge; a winner of the
True Heroes contest, and the “Education Vision Award” from the
Keep Chicago Beautiful organization.
Day of Service
The nearly 400 members of the
Mother McAuley Class of 2011
stepped out of the classroom and
into the community for their Day
of Service. “Service is an essential
component of Mother McAuley’s
mission and by having the students
spend a day outside of the classroom
The first annual “Day of Service”
immersed in helping others is a great
lesson,” said McAuley Service Coordinator Molly Meade-McGowan.
The students visited more than 20 different sites throughout Chicago.
Some of their work included reading to preschool students at St. Martin
DePorres House of Hope in the Woodlawn neighborhood; preparing
meals at the Ronald McDonald House at Comer Children’s Hospital;
sorting and boxing up shoes at Share Your Soles in Alsip; helping with
activities at the LaSalle Senior Center and Misericordia on the North
Side; as well as cleaning up the lake front with the Chicago Park
District 63rd Street Beach Restoration Project. At the end of the day
the students returned to McAuley for a prayers, reflection and spiritual
music by the Harmony, Hope, and Healing Choir, led by Marge
O’Connell Nykaza ’72.
Haiti/Philippine Benefit
The McAuley community rallied together and raised nearly $6,000 to
donate to the Holy Cross School in the Philippines and the Catholic
Relief Service for help in Haiti. Half the money raised was donated to
the Sisters of Mercy at the Holy Cross School in the Philippines. The
convent and a portion of the school were completely destroyed in a fire
and needed to be rebuilt. The other half went towards the earthquake
victims in Haiti. Donations of diapers, baby wipes, and other sanitary
items were also collected.
Off the Street Club
The Spanish Honor Society used a portion of the money raised
during their annual cookie dough sale to buy clothing, toys, books,
games, and sporting equipment for the Off the Street Club. The
SHH students purchased $1,200 in gifts to deliver to the Club’s annual
holiday party hosted by Huen Electric, Inc. The Off the Street Club is
the oldest boys and girls club in Chicago. The Off the Street Club helps
its members turn away from lives filled with gang violence and drugs.
This is the third year SHH has used a portion of their fundraising money
to donate to this most worthy organization.

Top Lifetime Donors at Mother McAuley
In addition to the many recent donors who made gifts to our organization within the last school year,
we want to recognize those who have given generously over their lifetimes. Some have given
steadily for years, some have given one-time major or planned gifts; some have done both.
Thank you to the following individuals for their extraordinary gifts.

The Thibeau Family
The Bigane Family
On January 24 the Mary Kay Thibeau Memorial
Scholarship Luncheon was held in the new dining hall
at Mother McAuley. Mary Kay was an alumna from the
Class of 1970 who passed away in January 2004 of
ovarian cancer. A scholarship was set up in her name to
help current seniors who are struggling to pay their tuition.
Mary Kay strongly believed in the McAuley education
and that every student should have the opportunity to
complete her four years here. The event raised $4,500 and
the afternoon’s success will allow a senior to finish
her education at McAuley.
As the five daughters of a wonderfully caring and loving
mom, the Bigane girls knew they had to plan something
special for their mom’s 80th birthday. The Bigane family
has been part of the Mother McAuley community for over
30 years. The five girls, Anne ’76, Katie ’78, Sheila ’79,
Meg ’82, and Julie ’84, are all alumnae of the school. Their
mom, Mrs. Edward Bigane, has played an active role in the
community since Anne was a freshman. The girls thought
what better gift than to give back to McAuley on behalf of
their mom. The Bigane family and friends raised money that
was dedicated to tuition assistance as well as helping current
seniors receive the full McAuley experience.
