Second Sunday of Easter, April 3, 2016
Thank You, Jesus and Borromeo,
for an Awesome Holy Week!
Thank You, Jesus, for raising us up to Your new life
of love—changing us and helping us all to grow through
our Church Family here at SCB. All the Holy Week celebrations and Sacraments were so moving and lifechanging. I could feel the powerful love of Jesus in our
foot washing—especially when children washed their
parent’s feet—and in our moving outdoor Way of the
Cross on Good Friday.
Thanks to so many who participated and helped in
many various ways to make them so beautiful and spiritually growthful, especially all of our ministers, our choir
and decorators. We are all thankful to Jesus for calling
our newest members to our Church through the RCIA
adults and RCIC children—your joy and love, enthusiasm and commitment are a witness to us all of Jesus, truly alive and working in us. Please read their stories over
the next few weeks.

at the sectionals this month. Junior Nathan Logan (son
of Mike and Pat and regular member of Borromeo) went
on to earn a top ranking in the Chemistry division and
the opportunity to move on to the statewide WYSE competition at Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla on April 19.
In addition, Nathan won first place in the regional
Science Olympiad in the anatomy and physiology category, qualifying for the state competition. The Missouri
Science Olympiad takes place on April 9 at Westminster
University in Fulton.
We congratulate Nathan on these wonderful accomplishments and wish him God’s grace as he goes on to
the State competitions.
And More Good News!
This note came from Birthright . . .
Please convey my sincerest thanks to all the PSR students that took part in the baby collection on Sunday. It
was very kind of them, their parents and for all the
teachers to participate. This will meet the needs of many
of our babies that we see and it makes their Moms very
happy to know that people care.
Blessed Easter to all of you!

Two Important Events Coming Up!

Please see the expanded information later in the bulletin about our
 April 10 pilgrimage to the Cathedral Basilica to pass
through the “Holy Door” during this Jubilee Year of
Mercy,
 and a commemoration of an important event in the
life of the parish: the 100th anniversary of the laying
of our church cornerstone on April 16, 1916. We will
remember this event with a re-dedication of our
beautiful church.
Everyone is invited to participate in these special
events, and check out the other events that we are planning for our parish’s 225th anniversary year, listed later
in this bulletin.
Merciful Lord, it does not surprise me that you forget
completely the sins of those who repent. I am not surprised that you remain faithful to those who hate and
revile you. The mercy which pours forth from you fills
the whole world. It was by your mercy that we were created, and by your mercy that you redeemed us by sending your Son. Your mercy is the light in which sinners
find you and good people come back to you. Your mercy
is everywhere, even in the depths of hell where you offer
to forgive the tortured souls. Your justice is constantly
tempered with mercy, so you refuse to punish us as we
deserve. O mad Lover! It was not enough for you to take
on our humanity; you had to die for us as well.

During the Year of Mercy, Pope Francis invites us to
contemplate the notion of a Holy Door, “a Door of
Mercy through which anyone who enters will experience the love of God who consoles, pardons, and instills hope.”
As Pope Francis has designated certain church doors in
Rome as Doors of Mercy, so also has Bishop Carlson
designated The Cathedral Basilica in St. Louis a Door of
Mercy. These churches are sites where individuals, families and other groups may make a pilgrimage—a holy
journey—seeking, remembering, and receiving God’s
mercy.
Join us in Pilgrimage and Celebration as our Borromeo
Church family travels to the Cathedral Basilica in St.

group to pass through the Door of Mercy. Please meet
on the gym parking lot at 1:00pm. We will have a tour
of the Cathedral and opportunities to pray. To complete our celebrations we will meet at Ted Drewes! “By

“The practice of pilgrimage has a special place in the
Holy Year, because it represents the journey each of us
makes in this life. Life itself is a pilgrimage,
and the human being is a viator, a pilgrim
travelling along the road, making his way
to the desired destination. Similarly, to
reach the Holy Door in Rome or in any
other place in the world, everyone, each
according to his or her ability, will have to
make a pilgrimage. This will be a sign that
mercy is also a goal to reach and requires
dedication and sacrifice. May pilgrimage be
an impetus to conversion: by crossing the
threshold of the Holy Door, we will find
the strength to embrace God’s mercy and
dedicate ourselves to being merciful with
others as the Father has been with us.”
—Pope Francis

Second Sunday of Easter, April 3, 2016
100th Anniversary of the Church Cornerstone
and Re-dedication of the Church: April 16/17, 2016
On July 7, 1915, a tornado destroyed St. Charles Borromeo Church. Our brick church was blown apart. From
St. Charles Borromeo 200 Years of Faith, “In a few seconds the winds leveled the east and west walls of the
structure, but it left portions of the front and rear walls
standing.” “On Sunday, July 11, over a hundred parishioners met in the school hall to make plans for the construction of a church of at least the same proportions and
beauty as the old church.”
On April 16, 1916, the church cornerstone was laid.
“Archbishop Glennon arrived in St. Charles around 4:00
but was unable to process around the block because
about 5,000 people had gathered on the property. According to Historia Domus, the archbishop then ‘made
the rounds and blessed the walls on the floor of the
church. Fr. Stritch preached a fine sermon and His Grace
followed him with a few most appropriate remarks.’ The
St. Charles Cosmos-Monitor noted that priests from fifteen nearby parishes attended.”
“Into the new cornerstone went the contents of the brick
church’s cornerstone; photographs of the inside and outside of the brick church and of its ruins; photographs of
the current construction and an artist’s conception of the
finished church; a newspaper from July 8, 1915, featuring
a description of the destructive storm; issues dated April
15, 1916, of the Cosmos-Monitor and Banner News; the
April 16 issue of the St. Louis German daily, Amerika; a
long list of contributors; a document signed by Louis
Wessbecher, John Ueberly, and the Building Committee;
and a special memorial written in Latin, in the elegant
script of the Sacred Heart nuns.”
At all the Masses on April 16 and 17, 2016, we will
celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the laying of our
Church Cornerstone and Re-dedication of our beautiful church. Please join us and invite your family members or former parishioners of St. Charles Borromeo to
come and help us celebrate this wonderful anniversary.
We wish you a blessed Easter Season!

El Camino de St. Charles Borromeo
1850—1860

The St. Charles Borromeo Journey
1850—1860
In 1851, Father Peter J. Verhaegen SJ returned to St. Charles Borromeo, his favorite
residence. Except for a brief interval, between 1857 and 1858 when he left to resume
teaching at St. Louis University, the aging priest served as pastor until his death in 1868.
Along with Fr. Verhaegen, there were five additional Jesuits at Borromeo, two associate priests and three Brothers that served as a gardener, a cook, and a teacher at the
boy’s school. In his capacity as pastor and spiritual advisor to the
nuns at Sacred Heart, he administered the last sacraments to his
dear friend, Philippine Duchesne, on the day of her death, Nov.
18, 1852. She was 83.
Verhaegen buried Philippine in a cemetery on the Sacred Heart grounds. In 1855 Philippine’s remains were exhumed and found to be intact. The Sacred Heart Sisters placed her in a new coffin
and reburied her beneath the floor of an octagonal shrine. In 1951, the Church in Rome ordered the
Society build a more suitable resting place. Construction began on a larger shrine and her remains
moved there on June 13, 1952.
During the 1850s, St. Charles Borromeo parish school for boys moved to a new
Fr. Verhaegen SJ
location. For over twenty years, the Jesuit Brothers had taught classes in a
wooden building constructed from material salvaged from the old log church. In 1851, the Jesuits
acquired a block of land from the city of St. Charles adjacent to the river. Here they built a two story
brick building that served as the boy’s new school and remained there until long after the industrial
development of the area forced the parish to move classes up the hill to Third Street. Adjacent to this
building, they had an additional two-story brick house built to replace the priest’s old frame rectory.
Soon the parish faced a new problem in the form of the North Missouri Railroad. Father Verhaegen
writes, “Another nuisance is caused by the proximity of the railroad which runs along the street in
St. Philippine
front
of our house. The puffing and smoke of the freight engine coming and going, and backing up
Duchesne’s Crypt
and the creaking noise of the cars day and night disturb our rest and we fear depreciation in the value
of our property.” At the same time, the railroad tried repeatedly to eject the Jesuits. Finally, Verhaegen deemed it wiser
to negotiate than to continue resisting, and so he accepted a settlement of $17,000 for the rectory property.
Father took the settlement and bought near the corner of Third and Franklin Streets. The property included a spacious
house with a garden and other buildings. In Father’s Verhaegen words, “The site of our new Pastoral Residence combines health with beauty, and is only 200 yards from the church.”

jobs. You guys do it so gracefully! Thank you.

have the delicious ice cream and pizza every week!

Easter Sunday Reflection
Many women and men follow Jesus from the beginning
of his ministry. They hear his teaching and witness his
healing actions. Jesus’ resurrection from the dead surprised his friends. The beloved disciple sees the empty
tomb and immediately believes Jesus is risen. Mary Magdalene hears the risen Jesus speak her name, recognizes
him, believes, and announces to the other disciples, “He
is risen.”
Peter and the whole community of Jesus’ followers lock
themselves in a room and pray together in fear. Suddenly the risen Jesus is in their midst, giving them peace and
forgiveness, calling them to forgive others and bringing
peace to them. Thomas doubts that Jesus is risen until he
sees Jesus for himself and believes.
Jesus’ friends witness his resurrection and began to proclaim the good news that God raised up to new life Jesus, who was crucified. The resurrection reveals Jesus’
divinity and his presence with us forever – our source of
joy. Let us go into our homes and discuss how we can be
witnesses for Jesus in our world today. How can we be a
source of joy to all who we meet?

What wounds in the world have you touched
firsthand?

How does your community of faith exercise its power to make peace and forgive?
Thank you.
School and café staff: your patience and cooperation
for the 6 weeks is unparalleled! Thank you.
There are many, many more people helping every week
in the café and behind the scenes, I’m sure we missed
some, and hopefully everyone realizes our Fish Fries
would not have been even half as successful if it weren’t
for each and every one giving their time so generously.
Yes, we are still looking for people to help coordinate in
2017. If you have questions, call us at 636-578-0670.
I hope everyone had a great Easter. Spring is upon us
and the flowers are in bloom! Enjoy!
Sincerely, Gretchen & Joe Thro

In the Gospel today, Jesus stands in the
midst of us and says: “Peace be with
you!”
During Mass we turn to each other and
say “Peace be with you!” As you put
your gift into the St. Vincent de Paul collection, you say “Peace be with you!” to those who are
poor and hungry.

Event in St. Charles Room this afternoon
All of us are challenged to show our love for Jesus by
“feeding His sheep.” Through prayer ask God how you
should best use your time, talent and treasure to assist
those who are in need. Remember that giving is an act
of worship and helps advance the mission of our parish
and greater Church.
We pray that, as disciples of Jesus, we answer the call to
be grateful and generous and look for ways to help
those in need.

Confirmation Rite of Election
We celebrate the Rite of Election with our Confirmation Candidates at the 4pm Mass Sunday, April
10. The Rite of Election brings to a close the process of preparing our young teens for Confirmation;
it does not, however bring to a close their learning about the Catholic faith and Traditions. At this
rite, with the testimony of sponsors, catechists, and parents, the candidates affirm their intention to
celebrate the Sacrament, and we, the Church, make our "election" of these candidates to receive the
Sacrament known.
They inscribe their names in the Book of the Elect as a pledge of fidelity to the Church. Now they are
called "the elect”. This period concludes with the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation on April 14, right here at
St. Charles Borromeo, when we welcome Bishop Robert Hermann for the 7pm Liturgy.
Students interested in the Sacrament of Confirmation next year, who attend the Academy of the Sacred Heart
should contact the Religious Education Office to register for the program, which begins in August 2016.
Interested in learning more about our Catholic Faith? The Rite of Catholic Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
continues to meet on Thursday evenings through May 6:30pm to 8pm. All are welcome to join us as we reflect and discuss scripture and Catholic teachings.
Our First Communion students celebrate the Rite of Election at 10am Mass next Sunday,
April 10. At this rite students and parents will commit to living the Christian faith, receiving Communion
each Sunday and living the Gospel life. Students will sign their name in the Book of Elect, which contains
the names of those who have proceeded them in receiving Holy Communion.
We are so blessed and thankful for your continued prayers for the success of all our Religious
Education programs.
In the love and peace of Jesus – Mrs. Becca McCullough
My Faith Journey—Zach Perry (a newly-Confirmed Borromeo Catholic—Easter 2016
I wasn’t very close to God before RCIA. I barely talked to God—didn’t even think about God as a Father to all of us.
The challenges I was facing was that I was not talking to Him and asking Him to forgive me for everything wrong and
that I wasn’t going to church every day.
What led me to RCIA is my Aunt Kim. She was the one that asked if I wanted to go. But also I wanted to be closer to
God and I have become closer to God. I discovered that Jesus will forgive me for all the bad things you did and He
doesn’t hold anything against you. I found about myself that I should have been closer to God before this. I found out
God will also forgive you and He doesn’t hold anything against you. And I found out the church community is a nice
family to be a part of.
The benefit is that I am closer to God and He will answer anything you ask. I am in the stage of becoming a lot closer to
God. I see ahead of me that I am closer to God and that I will always be close to God.
We wish you a blessed Easter Season!

to Mary Rhoades, who celebrated 100 years on March 29. God bless you, Mary!
Joke of the Week
A trio of old-timers ran out of tales of their own heroic exploits and started bragging about their ancestors. “My great
-grandfather,” one declared proudly, “was a drummer boy at Shiloh at age 13.”
“Mine went down with Custer at the Battle of the Little Bighorn,” another boasted.
“I’m the only soldier in my family,” confessed the third man, “but if my great-grandfather were living today, he’d be
the most famous man in the world.”
“What did he do?” his friends asked.
“Nothing much—but he would be 185 years old.”
We wish you a blessed Easter Season!
