HISTORICAL BUILDINGS ON
BRIVIBAS STREET IN OGRE
1
1
The building on Brīvības Street 4 was built in 1927. The
owner of the building, Kārlis Ausbiķis, created a hotel and a restaurant
named Ogre, which was managed by Anna Ausbiķe. During 1948, the
Council of Workers’ Deputies and housing association’s flats were located
in the building. After the World War II, the Executive Committee of Ogre
District, a library, a complex of municipal enterprises, and later – a Housing Authority, were all located within the building.
2 The building at 11 Brīvības street is an architectural monument built in 1926 and designed by the architect Eduards Smurgis. The
station master, Antons Pudans, the owner of the house, set up a hotel
and a restaurant “Esplanāde”, while the first floor was occupied by various
shops. In 1928 the building was bought by the newly elected Ogre town
council. After the reconstruction by Vladimirs Shervinskis, the Ogre town
council and Ogre 6-year elementary school were located there. After
World War II, educational activities continued in the building. When Ogre
secondary school moved to its new premises in 1960, the building was
left at the disposal of Ogres secondary evening school, but since 1991 the
Ogres art school has been located here. In 1998 a mental coat of arms of
the town of Ogre was attached to the wall of the building in memory of
time when the Ogres town council worked there.
3 The building at 12 Brīvības street is an architectural monument built in 1901 as a residence and for trade purposes. After World War
I the building was in miserable condition because its owner, Martins Pau-

citis, had emigrated to Russia. In 1929 ownership rights were obtained by
anna and Veronika Paucitis. A variety of shop were placed in the building,
e.g. Karlis Davidson’s colonial wares, Mile Austrian’s bakery and confectionary, Marija Mikelsone’s textiles and haberdashery, Elfrida Adins’ meat
and sausage production, Lilija Blicavs’ hairdresser’s. After World War II the
function of the building changed several times. Most Ogre inhabitants remember it as the Ogre district police department prom forty years. After
the reconstruction of the building in 1997-1998, it is now the restaurant
and entertainment complex “Police Acedemy 98”
4 The first Ogre railway station, a one-storey stone building,
was built in 1859. The structure of the station consisted of two platforms,
the platforms shed, a storehouse and loading platform, a water supply
tower, a wooden barrack and two water pumps for filling steam engines.
Over the years the station building has been reconstructed and enlarged.
During World War II it was destroyed, and the new building was built
in 1947 after a standard design. The shed, built at the beginning of the
20th century on the second platform has been preserved. Its supports are
made of steel rails produced in 1881-1883. The station building belongs
to the state stock company “Latvijas Dzelzceļš”. In 1999-2000 extensive
repair and restoration work was done to the railways station.
5 The first chemist’s building at 22 Brīvības street was built
in 1895. The owner of this one-storey stone house was a pharmacologist Arturs Flahs. After World War I only the walls of the building were
4

retained. The remains were bought by the pharmacologist Peteris Shirons and Lilija Shirons and in 1924 a new chemist’s shop was designed
by Indriks Blankenburgs. In 1927 a bath house was added, and in 1933
Edgars Starkis created additional premises for trade and a kiosk. At the
end of the 19th century a bathing institution was established as part of
the chemist’s, which functioned until 1941. People could attend the bath
house to take therapeutic bath (sulphur, conifer needles, assorted salts).
In 1986 the reconstruction of the chemist’s building was started, which
significantly changed both the outer appearance and the interior of the
building. At present the chemists continue working in the building, even
though much of the previous glamour has been lost.
the owner, Pauls Baumanis, opened a café and a boarding house, “Ogre
- kurhous”. It was a place where local musicians performed in the evening, and famous artists prom Riga were frequent guests. In 1930 the
management of the restaurant and hotel was taken over by A. Birzulis
(the manager of Mazais Vērmaņu parks) and later, in 1935 by N. Osipas.
The building became the cultural and social center of the town. Various
entertainments, concerts, festivities (beauty contests, press balls) took
place there. After World War II the building housed a dining facility and a
hotel. Prom the mid-eighties till 1993 the building was run by the applied
arts and souvenir production company “Daiļrade”. at present the building
is a private property.
6 The building on Brīvības Street 23, where nowadays a cafe
Niko and a flower shop Ortija are located, was built in 1927. The owner of
the building was Mārtiņš Pūre, who lived with his family on the higher
floor of the building, a bakery and a pastry shop were housed on the
ground floor. The whole family worked in the bakery, each of them had
their own responsibilities. Pūre’s bakery became one of the most favourite shopping places among inhabitants of Ogre. It was considered that
the tastiest bread and the sweetest pretzels could be bought there. At
the moment, the building is again owned by the son of Mārtiņš Pūre –
Oļģerts, who lives in California.

The Ogre post office at 38 Brīvības street is an architectural monument. It was built in 1936 according to architect Davids Zarins
design. Until that time post office was situated in small inadequate
premises. The first floor of the post and telegraph office was a transaction
room, the second floor – the post master’s and technician’s apartments,
and the basement was used as a maintenance department. The guard’s
house was located in the yard. In 1937 a modern automatic telephone
exchange, produced in the famous factory VEF, was opened in Ogre. It
served 150 subscribers. By 1939 the number of the subscribers had doubled. Over the years the building has not changed in appearance or function – the Ogre post office in still located there.

war times in Ikšķile, the school which was located next to the road was
destroyed for several times. From time to time the school was located in
a house of a sexton or a bell-ringer, and sometimes even in a peasant’s
room. In 1966, Elkšņi School joined the 8-year-old Ikšķile School in the

The cemetery was laid out during the late 17th century when the deceased were no longer buried near the Ikšķile Church and pastorate.
Initially the cemetery was purposed only for Latvian peasants and craftsmen, but starting from 1772, Germans belonging to the Ikšķile Congregation were also buried here. During the 19th century an Orthodox section
was created, which later on formed as a separate cemetery. Here lay
Latvians that became Orthodox believers, and bodies of soldiers from the
Russian army base located near the cemetery. The Ikšķile Cemetery is an
important monument of cultural history, where one can see headstones
made by stonemasons from both Riga and Ikšķile, as well as more than
fifty cast crosses. A memorial to the Latvian Riflemen who died during

Order, Peter von Borch. By uniting eight peasant farms, the Jaunķeipene
manor was formed (Vecķeipene manor was destroyed during the Northern War) in 1743. Nowadays, only the dendroligical plantation of national
importance – Ķeipene Manor Park (2.8 ha) – with important introduced
tree species (the circumference of grey walnut trees can reach 2.9 m and
3.4 m) has remained. The park was created in 19th century, when the
owner of the manor was a landlord Carl von Lewis of Menar. There are
27 secular trees at the park. In the centre of the park a cemetery hill is
located where the estate manager and his family rest. The park is state

birthday gift from the self-government. A belief says that “if you touch
the note and feel absolutely certain about what you want to achieve in
music and in life, it will come true”. The author of the idea is Linda Mangule, the sculpture was created by the sculptor Valdis Štrāls. A miniature
version of the sculpture is used as a statuette which each year is given to
the best students and teachers of the school for special achievements.
Ogre Music School was founded in 1960. Nowadays the school offers five
programmes: keyboard instruments, stringed instruments, wind instruments, percussion instruments, as well as music theory and choir class.

Eduards Morics Zilbers) a cradle is hanged in the house Siliņi. This is
the place where the literary characters from Sudrabu Edžus works were
born, such as the boy named Dauka, who because of his big curiosity was
undeservedly called Crazy Dauka. The name of Sudrabu Edžus is closely
connected with the history of Meņģele. His father, Fricis Zilbers, was
a church organist at Meņģele Church during the period of the landlord
Scheinvogel. A monument, created by the sculptor Vilnis Titāns in 1984,

The Evangelical Lutheran Congregation of Ogre was formed in the 20th
century. Initially, in 1908, residents of the Ogre seasonal village decided
to build the Forest Chapel. The priest of the Salaspils congregation Waldemar von Huhn on behalf of the congregation bought a piece of land and
commissioned to an architect Edgars Frīzendorfs (1881–1945) a project
of the church in 1909. The Forest Chapel with 300 seats was a wooden
building and stylistically reminded of sacred buildings in the South of the
Czech Republic and Switzerland. The chapel burnt down during the WWI.
The Congregation of the Ogre Seasonal Village was formed in 1927, thus
there was a need for a church. The church in late neo-Gothic style was
designed by a project of Haralds Kundziņš which was altered by an engineer Andrejs Kēse. The new church with 422 seats was built in a year
on the remains of the Forest Chapel. The church was consecrated on
31st August 1930. The bell of the church (Ø 0.78 m, 200 kg) was made
at the bell foundry of Schwenn, Riga. A phrase “Dzīvos saucu, mirušos
apraudu” (“The living I call, the dead I bewail”) and the words “Ogres
pilsētas baznīcai Ziemas svētkos. Liets no J.C.Schwenn. Rīga, 1930.g.”
(“A Christmas present to the church of Ogre Town. Made in J.C.Schwenn.
Riga, 1930.”) are written on the bell. The altarpiece, which was a present
from the first head of the congregation Andrejs Kēse, was created by Jānis
Šēnbergs based the work of Karl Huhn The Second Advent of Christ. In
1940, the pipe organ was played at the church for the first time. During the Soviet period, the fate of the congregation and the church was in
jeopardy. During the 1970’s, only 50 people were registered in the congregation, and less than 20 people visited church services. The Catholic
congregation used the church to hold its services, as well as the Baptist
congregation after 1975. Since 1999, only the Lutheran congregation
holds its services here. There were 362 registered congregation members
in 2010. Spiritual music concerts also take place here on a regular basis.

once full of, is one of the interpretations about the origins of town name
(угорь is the Russian for eel, which sounds similarly to the word Ogre).
There are many legends related to the Ogre textile production plant, the
free thinking and rebellious spirit of the town which has accompanied
the unforgettable concerts of Imants Kalniņš and the band Pērkons (The
Thunder), and the extraordinary conclusion of the folk festival Baltika-88.
The silver giant of the Ogre Blue Hills has its own legend: he has found
its home here because he knew the meaning of the place name Ogre in
English, which has caused lots of misunderstandings.
The exposition Ogre – Water and Air Resort is dedicated to one of the
greatest periods in the town’s history – the time when Ogre became a
favourite and popular resort destination in Latvia. The exposition tells
about the most picturesque places, hotels, B&B hotels, beauty and health
care services, restaurants, cafes, as well as summer houses and their famous inhabitants. Art and thematic exhibitions take place in the exhibition hall of the museum on a regular basis.
