My Year with Pet Refuge: A Volunteer's Story
Andrea Henderson
I moved to South Bend in June
2014, for the one-year MBA
program at The University of Notre
Dame. Unfortunately, I had to leave
my own dog back in Colorado
with my parents, so I immediately
began researching for a way to
volunteer within the South Bend
community and help dogs in need.
Pet Refuge was one of the original
organizations I found online. I
knew immediately that I wanted
to volunteer with this organization
because they take pride in being a
no kill shelter and working with the
dogs in order to find them the best
home possible. Pet Refuge is also
an all-volunteer organization and
therefore, without the help of the
amazing volunteers it would
not exist.
Volunteering each Monday night
became a much needed break from
school work and the everyday
stresses of life. Over the year that I
Pet Refuge Report: Summer 2015
volunteered, I had the opportunity
to meet many amazing dogs, see
them grow during their time at the
shelter and get adopted to their
perfect forever homes. It was always
bittersweet to see a dog go, but you
know that Pet Refuge is always
looking for the next dog in need to
take their place. Not only did the
dogs become like family, but the
volunteers I worked with did as
well. I plan to continue to support
Pet Refuge after I move away
because I have seen first hand what
they do for dogs and cats in need.
Every volunteer is there because
they love animals and does not ask
for anything in return, except for
doggy kisses, which they truly earn
each and every week.
Thank you, and it was a pleasure
working with you and everyone else
at Pet Refuge the past year! I will
keep in touch!

Dogs Saving Dogs!
Dogs Saving Dogs was founded
by two college students with the
promise to create jewelry that
uniquely expresses the beauty and
courage of homeless pets, and raises
money to protect them until they
can be fostered or adopted. These
sets come with two charms. One as
a necklace for you to wear and one
for your dog to wear on their collar.
The necklace is engraved with the
name of the specific dog you are
helping. 50% of profits from each
set goes directly to help that specific
dog.
Pet Refuge is so thankful to Dog
Saving Dogs for teaming up
with us. Several of our dogs with
special needs are receiving support
through their necklaces. Consider
buying a necklace to help support
one of the following Pet Refuge
Dogs: Bear, Boss, or Olaf. You can
even order a customized charm
with your own dog's name on it on
their website!

Vixen
Sweet Vixen is a 9 ½ year old
shepherd mix. Wandering around
the yard and sleeping on the couch
are her favorite pasttimes. She is
housebroken and crate trained.
She would also do best with older
children and a fenced yard.

Meet a
Volunteer…
ê
Anne LaBarber
Volunteer
Anne has been
volunteering at
Pet Refuge for
18 years. Over
the years Anne
has fostered cats and kittens for Pet
Refuge and even helped clean in the
cat rooms, but more recently she is
referred to as our “laundry lady”.
She has tirelessly worked at keeping
the laundry clean for the last 8-9
years. At our old location on 6th
street, Anne would haul huge bags
of laundry back and forth to a
nearby laundromat. It was the only
way to keep up with the constant
pile of dirty laundry made by over
30 dogs and 100 plus cats. We did
have a washer and dryer at that
location, but it just wasn’t sufficient
to keep up with the heaps of towels,
blankets, and sheets used to keep
our cats and dogs clean and warm.
At our new location on Burnette
Dr. Anne thinks she’s died and gone
to laundry heaven. There she has
an industrial strength washer and
dryer that do the laundry in half
the time the old machines did.
Anne comes into the shelter
twice a week to try to keep up with
the ever increasing piles of dirty
laundry. She is so appreciated by
the volunteer s who try to keep up
on the days Anne can’t come in to
work. She always goes that extra
mile to keep the laundry room
looking neat and clean. It’s just not
in her to leave before every spec of
laundry is clean.
Thank you, Anne. We all
appreciate you!

The 29th Annual Pet Refuge
Auction
H
Kevin Seale
ave you ever been to a Pet
Refuge Auction? If you
haven’t, here is what you missed.
On a cool spring evening, the
annual pet refuge auction took
place at the Gillespie Conference
and Special Event Center in
South Bend. Around the room
the auction items up for bid were
displayed; from watches and
artwork, to sports memorabilia
and fine wines, there was
something for every taste and
budget.
Supporters silently bid on
the items while listening to
the live band, socializing with
fellow supporters and volunteers
and eating well. A charming
multimedia presentation is
shown, highlighting the animals
and those whose lives have been
changed after adopting from Pet
Refuge.
Thanks to all those who came
out and supported Pet Refuge.
This is an annual event; plan
ahead to attend next years Pet
Refuge Auction (it will be our
30th!).

Our Kitty Miracle
Sharon Engstrom
After a recent church service my
husband, John & I were talking
to Roxanne Ewing about the
possibility of adopting another
kitty. Our previous one had died a
year & a half ago and we wanted to
adopt another one.
Roxanne mentioned she had
an 18 month old kitty whose left
front paw had to be amputated
due to it being mangled and they
were not able to save it. She said
the people who had rescued it
named her Miracle which seemed
very appropriate due to what she
had experienced in her short life.
Shortly after that conversation we
went to Roxannes to meet Miracle;
she was a very sweet loving kitty
who seemed to gravitate to us.
After looking at a few other cats, we
decided to adopt Miracle.
She has adapted very well to her
new surroundings and seems to be
very happy. She loves to be held and
petted, but can also let you know
when enough is enough. Since I
travel a lot for my work, John now
has a kitty waiting for him when
he gets home after work, waiting
for attention and of course also to
be fed!! We are so glad to have this
kitty and look forward to enjoying
her for a very long time. Thank
you to the family that rescued her
and we are now glad to be part of
Miracle’s journey of life.

Be A Volunteer!
Did you know with only 4 hours to spare a week you can help save lives? We
currently are in search of volunteers (18 and over) to help in our dog department taking care of our residents. They did not choose to be there and
they cannot take care of themselves. Your weekly commitment will consist of
about 1 hour of cleaning / feeding and the rest of the time playing, walking
and socializing with the dogs. We all waste 4 hours a week one way or another, why not putt that time to good use, we promise it will not be a waste!
Here are some benefits of volunteering at an animal shelter. http://www.
petsadviser.com/animal-welfare/benefits-animal-shelter-volunteer/
