A Child's Love
Carrie Seale
A child's love is so strong and
so pure. Children don't see race
or gender. They don't see a dog's
breed. They see a dog's heart.
Skye had been to several adoption
events. A very sweet puppy who
loved to run and play. A wonderful
dog who had had a rough start to
her already short life. Skye came
to Pet Refuge with a severely
infected leg that eventually had to
be amputated. But some people
didn't see her as an energetic puppy
who just wanted a family to LOVE,
they saw her breed. I watched in
amazement as some people gave a
wider circle around her when they
went by.
But then something wonderful
happened. Max and his family came
to meet Skye. Max already knew he
loved her just by her picture. And
in the time he spent with her his
love grew.
Support Pet Refuge.......................11
Before his family came to visit
Max was so worried about Skye
missing a leg. So worried to the
point he was prepared to build her
a leg out of his treasured Legos so
Skye could run and play.
Max was so amazed Skye could
run and play. That she could roll on
the floor with him and cuddle.
Max saw Skye's heart. Max saw a
dog who wanted to be loved. Max
didn't see a breed. Max didn't know
and didn't care about her breed. All
he cared about was he loved her
and she loved him.
After meeting Skye, Max came
back several times to say "goodbye'
to Skye. He had me in tears. Tears
of joy that children's hearts are pure
and simple. That children love for
the sake of loving.
Thank you, Max and Family, for
adopting Skye and loving her!

Urban Adventure Games
Margaret Suter
On Saturday, July 25, the seventh
annual Urban Adventure Games
were held. What’s so special about
the Urban Adventure Games, you
ask? And what does it have to do
with Pet Refuge?
First, back in March, during the
planning of UAG, they had a $5,000
charitable giveaway. How this
worked is non-profits that benefited
the local community filled out an
application on UAG Facebook to
be eligible. On an assigned date for
each non-profit during the month
of April, anyone could go on UAG
Facebook page and “LIKE” the
eligible non-profit. The top five
non-profits that received the most
“LIKES” won $1,000. Pet Refuge
not only received the most “LIKES”
for their assigned date, but the most
“LIKES” over all the other nonprofits. Way to go Pet Refuge!
The checks were rewarded to a
representative from each non-profit
at the opening ceremonies the
morning of the Urban Adventure
Games at Potawatomi Park. Pet
Refuge’s own Pam Balint, along
with her husband, Brian, received
the $1,000 check on behalf of Pet
Refuge from the Urban Adventure
Games.
Second, for being one of the top
five winners, each non-profit pulled
together a team and volunteered
at one of the many checkpoints. A
group from Pet Refuge volunteered
at the Newman Recreation
Center. Pam Balint and her crew
of volunteers consisting of Brian
Balint, Sue Beggs, Tracie Davis,
Dawn Keller and Pam Filley ran
the “Blind Pictionary” challenge.
The Urban Adventure Games are
made up of two per team, riding
their bikes from checkpoint to
checkpoint throughout South Bend
and Mishawaka to complete a
“challenge”, whether it is physical or
mental. For Blind Pictionary, one
of the team members would pick
a card with a name or description
on it. They would hold a piece of
paper over their head and draw
what was on the card. The other
team member had to guess what
they were drawing. Then they
would switch. A fun time was had
by the volunteers in this exciting
event. Next year we would also like
to have teams riding in the event!

Adorable Adoptables
These are loveable animals, looking for their fur-ever homes
Sylvester Stallone
DOB July 2011
Contrary to his tough name, this
big boy is a sweet and gentle soul.
Sylvester Stallone likes to follow
you around and ask for attention
and he loves to stay close to you. He
is an outgoing, talkative cat and he
enjoys the company of other cats.
Pet Refuge Report: Fall 2015
Owen
Owen would prefer to be your one
and only! Owen would thus love to
find his true forever home where he
can be the only pet. He is a friendly,
affectionate 5-year-old mutt. He is
an energetic boy who would benefit
from continued training. He loves
to play fetch and requires a securely
fenced yard.

Romeo
Romeo is a leggy Min Pin mix
who is 4 years old. He is very
treat motivated and knows several
obedience commands. He is
housebroken. Romeo would prefer
to be an only dog, and while he
likes cats, they may not appreciate
his love. Romeo also has alot of
energy.

I adopted Auggie from Pet Refuge about this time
in 2004 as a 2 year old cat. Tonight he brought
me an anniversary gift. (It was wiggling a couple
minutes ago.) Thank you both for your wonderful
gifts. We have had a great 11 years.
Dear Pet Refuge and Foster Mommy Angie,
I've been in my fur-ever home now for one whole
month. I've been settling in and adjusting a little
more each day that I'm here. My new family has
been very patient and loving while I find my place
with them and my new fur-bro and fur-sis. (Mom
says my big, brown eyes melt her heart every day
and that helps me a lot if I get into trouble!)

We adopted Dexter 6 years ago along with his
brother Drake and he is happy and content and a
great book mark! Thank you Pet Refuge for your
amazing work with the animals in our community
I do silly things that make my mom and dad laugh
at me; I lay like a "frog dog" and just love rolling
around and laying in the bathtub. I've also made a
few new two-legged friends, big and small! I met
my new vet, who really liked me and was so happy
that a big dog like me was rescued! I also started
"school" last week where I'm learning a lot of new
things including some manners (because no one
had ever really taught me those). My teacher visits
me once a week! I really like to hang with my dad
in the yard whenever he's outside and I love to
chew on Nylabones, play with squeaky plush toys
(my favorites are a snake and a fox!), hang with my
fur-bro in the yard, steal bones from him and take
naps with him, and I even really like my little fursis! I like to sniff her and be near her. Just wanted
to check in and say thank you for finding me a very
loving home...I'm opening my heart to my new
mom and dad.
Love always,
Bomber

I think Luna (formerly Cali) is quite enjoying her
new home and owner. I know I'm enjoying her.
She's quite the character. Thanks to Pet Refuge
for being a great organization to find new family
members!
My pretty princess is so sweet. She has never
lived up to her namesake Omarosa so she's been
Rosalita. She's definitely a one-human cat though.
She's friendly to others and loves attention but
she's pretty much all mine and prefers to stick by
me. And will throw a fit if I am at work too long. So
glad I came to get her! She's the first thing I see in
the morning since she insists on sleeping on the
adjoining pillow. I've updated you all plenty but
this picture was so cute I had to share. I do love my
torties (three now!).

We got this little guy over two years ago from Pet
Refuge and he has been the perfect addition to our
family! We couldn't be more thankful to all those
who helped save his life! He is still getting used to
running around the new fenced yard we put in last
month! Lots of puppy yawns at our house when he
gets done playing!

For those volunteers that remember Dakota...
He is doing awesome! I adopted him a little over 2
years ago. He is the best behaved dog I have ever
owned (and I've owned a lot). He's been nothing
but a blessing to me and my family. I'm so glad
that I had the opportunity to work with him while
volunteering, and to adopt him when it was clear
we were meant to be together. I wouldn't trade him
for the world
