We had the opportunity to speak with the Honourable Janice Filmon and her husband Gary Filmon.
We were all treated like royalty that afternoon.

Golf season is finally here!
Any lady golfers who are looking for a ‘fun-round-of-golf’
are encouraged to head down to the golf course.
Afternoon golf takes place every Tuesday in May at 1pm.
In June, July and August, the time changes to 9:30am.
Evening golf was a big success last year and another four
week session of best ball golf will take place starting Tuesday,
June 21st at 6:30pm. You can enter as a twosome or a single.
All golfers, both beginners and experienced are welcome!

This article is something you can talk about around the supper table...this month:
Jesus is our source for all our peace.
Matthew 11:28-30 Amplified Bible (AMP):
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavily burdened [by religious rituals that provide no peace], and I will
give you rest [refreshing your souls with salvation]. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me [following Me as My
disciple], for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest [renewal, blessed quiet] for your souls. For My
yoke is easy [to bear] and My burden is light.”
When people struggle and life becomes hard, they tend to look elsewhere for strength instead of the Lord. Life
becomes mundane and purposeless. Dreams die and hope vanishes. The best they hope for is a few minutes of fun
and distraction on the weekend. Many times people turn to religion hoping that this will help. Some have created
their own brand of religion, taking a bit of Christianity, a bit of new age and a little eastern mysticism. In the end
nothing really seems to provide the peace they are looking for. Christ invites us to look to Him and to Him only.
The crucial difference between following Christ and all other religions is that we are offered a relationship with
God, one that Jesus initiated and maintains.
When your faith is in Christ a whole new world of help opens up. You can now rely on God’s power and
strength within you! Psalm 34:19 says, “The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers
him from them all” (NIV). Proverbs 24:16 says, “For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise
again” (NIV). No matter what you’re facing, He can take you through! He gives us the strength by relying on
the power of the Holy Spirit within. There is not a challenge that is too big for God. There is not a problem that
He won’t give you wisdom. “I tell you the truth,” says Jesus, “if you have faith even as small as a mustard seed,
you could say to this mountain, ‘move from here to there’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible”
(Matthew 17:20, NLT). So what is possible?.......................
“Everything is possible for one who believes” (Mark 9:23, NIV)! Why not try Jesus and Jesus only today!

Thanks to everyone for their great support
of the Art Council's garage sale, and for those
who attended the really enjoyable Matt Zimmerman concert
that evening.
We had a nice-sized crowd attend for some great
Canadian music - about half original and then a great mix of
"Great Big Sea", Gordon Lightfoot, Murray McLachlan, and
others. Great spread of food provided by the board and just an
all-round enjoyable evening - thanks for being there!
Coming up we have the MWAC's annual general meeting
which is more a celebration of another successful year ......
anyone is welcome to attend! It is being held Monday,
May 16 at the Oak River Inn. Happy hour 5:30-6:30, supper
for $15 at 6:30 p.m. followed by performances by some of
our graduating musicians. Jaimie Rose, Randy Kirk, Bailey
Wilson and Brian Johnson have been performing for the
Arts Council for four or five years now and it’s a pleasure to
see what accomplished musicians they've all become.........
we will miss them, but hope they'll still come back to visit
after graduation!

know supper numbers.
Also coming up is the annual Hamiota Mid-West Art Club
annual show and tea on June 4, from 2-4 p.m. at the Heritage
Arts Centre. This year's theme "The Sky's the Limit" is from a
workshop some members attended by Gerry Oliver. There
will be a feature wall of 'sky' paintings as well as all the work
they've completed this past year, so hope you can make it.
Their display will remain as the exhibition for the month of
June in the Gallery.

The current exhibition is a bright-coloured mix of people,
places and still life subjects by self-taught artist Agueda
Montenegro. Agueda and her family moved to the area from
Mexico 10 years ago and you can catch the Mexican vibe in
the vivid colours and interesting approaches in the exhibition.
Many of them are for sale and five have actually sold already
although they will remain on display until the end of May, so
that tells you something about the appeal of this emerging
artist!
Our last booked concert from an 'away' performer for this
year will be by Jay Aymar, on June 21, so mark your
calendars. Jay was here last year and put on an absolutely
great show. He is also a published author and has a number of
CD's to his credit. It is not often we get an opportunity to
host someone you'd expect to see in larger venues, so we
really appreciate Jay's generous philosophy that makes him
willing to share his talent with small (but charming!) venues
like the Heritage Arts Centre. Hope you'll take advantage of
this opportunity and call the Arts Centre for tickets!
Believe it or not, it is nearly time for tea! The Heritage
Art Centre's weekly Thursday teas will be starting Thursday,
June 9 from 2-4 p.m. and will be running right through until
the end of September with the exception of fair day. It's a
great summer fundraiser for the Art Council which helps
provide for the youth classes, programs and concerts we run
the rest of the year, so please continue with your generous
support again this year. And, for five dollars, you get your
choice of tea and a lovely dessert or fruit cup, a pleasant
atmosphere, beautiful art displays to look at and a great place
to bring company or meet with friends.
We look forward to seeing you all again!
School of Dance held their year-end recital on April 17th.
The dancers performed twenty-two dances to a full house at the Hamiota
Collegiate Institute. Dale Davison was the MC for the afternoon and did an
outstanding job!
This year’s dance recital was bitter sweet as we said good bye and good luck to
our two dance instructors. Miss Kelsey Keilback has been an instructor with the
program for eight years and is graduating from the Brandon University with her
Bachelor of Physical Education. Also, after two years Miss Niki Nelson has decided
to continue her Bachelor of Management at the University of Lethbridge next year.
We would like to introduce Miss Brooke Webber as the dance instructor for the
2016/2017 dance season. Miss Brooke currently teaches at Steppin’ Time Dance
Studio in Brandon, MB and will be available to teach our dancers Tuesday’s and
Thursday’s. Miss Brooke brings with her 16 years of dancing experience and five
years of teaching experience.
She is very excited to start working with our dancers in September!
The schedule for the 2016/2017 dance season is currently under construction.
A general meeting will be held in June (date and time to be determined), with
registration for the 2016/2017 season in late August/early September.

April has been a busy month again and the
nice weather is a real blessing. Our thoughts and
prayers go out to those folks affected by the
forest fires.
Our Grade 3 Buddies were back for visits
again and since it was Earth Day themed, the
seniors and the students made bird feeders from
recycled toilet paper rolls and then we hung
them on the trees. The students also asked the
seniors about how they recycled in their student
days. As we know the seniors are experts at
reusing and recycling and that is second nature
to them. It was a fun morning and enjoyed by
all. One more at both buildings and then we bid
our students farewell for another school year.
Another hot lunch was held at the Elementary
School and our wonderful volunteers this month
were Tammy Campbell, Faye Bridge, Diane
Johns, Ev Allan and Wendy Bell. Thank you
very much for giving up your time for this
event. One last one to go here at the end of May
and that will wrap up the hot lunches for this
school year.
The Hamiota Seniors Council held our
fundraising pie auction on Wednesday May 11th
and we wish to thank everyone who donated
time, baking, attending our event, reminder
phone calls, picking up donations, working at
the auction and without your help it could not
have been a success and who doesn’t love pie!
I also need to thank the students who helped out
with our event by providing the entertainment
“Clean Slate” and the “Senior Tap Class”, as
well as the students who volunteered their time
to assist with serving, setting up, etc. Ken &
Shirley Hudson of Hudson’s Auction Services
were a valuable asset to our auction and we
thank them for giving of their time.
The Hamiota Chamber of Commerce,
Hamiota Economic Development, Co-op and
Super Thrifty Drugstore are sponsoring a
‘Free Ride on the Handi-van’ for shopping
purposes on the 1st & 3rd Tuesday of the month.
If you live at Park or Lilac Residence, please
call me to book your seat at 204 764-2658.
If you live in the community and want to take
advantage of this service, please call Edwin to
book your seat at 204 764-2003. The bus picks
you up at 1 p.m. and returns you back after
shopping has been completed. A very great
service that we hope will be utilized.
Next trip is May 17th @ 1 p.m.
Book early to avoid disappointment.
It was recently brought to my attention that
there may be some seniors in our community
that do not have an ERIK kit or that theirs may
be outdated and needs to be brought up to
current status. Please know that I have these
kits in my office and they are available to
anyone who wants one. The important aspects
of the ERIK kit are to place it on your fridge so
that if the ambulance arrives they know to look
for it there.
This kit holds your current medication list,
your Manitoba Health Numbers, emergency
contacts, family doctor, as well as your health
care directives if you are unable to speak for
yourself in the event of a medical emergency.
This is great information for us all and not
simply for seniors. If you need an ERIK Kit or
want to update yours, please feel free to contact
me and I would be happy to give you one. They
really speed up the care at the hospital as the
first pieces of the puzzle are already there for
the attendants to work with.
I am also looking at holding another Mature
Drivers Workshop and I am awaiting some
dates from the instructor to set this up. We need
15 participants to attend and it is a very
worthwhile workshop for anyone wishing to
improve their skills or simply to reinforce some
rules and regulations that may have been
forgotten or underused. Please note this
workshop is not an avenue to revoke anyone’s
license, it is a teaching tool. I will have more
information on this at a future date so please
stay posted.

Canadians with visual, hearing, medical or physical disabilities.

Drinks, Hot Dogs and a WALK in support of the Purina Walk for Dog Guides. If you wish to make a donation before that
evening, please contact any Lion Member. Lions Foundation of Canada will issue a tax receipt for donations of $20 or
more. All are Welcome !!
All Dog Guides and required training, including transportation and accommodation, are provided at
no cost to qualified applicants. The Lions Foundation does not receive any government funding and
relies on the support of fundraising events like the Purina® Walk for Dog Guides.
It costs approximately $25,000 to raise, train and place ONE Dog Guide.
