we have been able to successfully bring together
thousands of art enthusiasts from all over Winston-Salem
and the surrounding communities. We have teachers who
started out in our summer art programs as youngsters.
We have students who have gone on to professional
careers in the arts. And we even have former students
who have returned to teach as master craftsmen.
We take great pride in all of these accomplishments and
look towards the future with tremendous excitement as we
continue our tradition of providing high-quality community
arts education for students of all ages and abilities.

PROGRAMMING
Overview
At Sawtooth our most valuable asset is our
outstanding pool of professional artists
and crafts artists who bring their creative
talent and skills to the classroom as our
teachers and workshop leaders. Classes
and workshops at Sawtooth School range
from introductory to professional levels of
instruction across a wide variety of art
forms: photography (both digital and

Youth Programs: Perhaps the program area with the
greatest impact, our youth classes and workshops target
students from Pre-K to middle school, reaching young
artists during their most impressionable years. Our
summer youth programming includes:
8 weeks of art-intensive, themed camps ranging
from mural and community arts to photography,
ceramics and mixed media
4 weeks of middle school programming , including
ceramics, fused glass, stained glass, woodworking,
fashion design, digital art, photography, mixed media
and more.
Former students often tell us that the Sawtooth
experience is unique in both its creative classroom
environment and its exceptionally high quality of
programs and teachers. We’ve also found that our youth
programs bond families to our school. For example, a

In addition to revenue earned through class

Grants from both public and private foundations provide
programmatic support and development as well as funds

Gifts, bequests and donations of all kinds—public and

member-only offerings and catalog mailings.
Deck the Halls, Sawtooth’s signature fundraising event, is
a sale of affordable fine arts and crafts work from
Sawtooth faculty, students and regional artists for
purchase by the public. Proceeds are shared between the
artist and Sawtooth School, helping to support our
organization’s operations and arts-based programming.

Scholarship
Program
Sawtooth School is fortunate to be able to
offer a limited number of scholarships to
families and students who might not
otherwise be able to afford arts
education. Over the last year our
scholarship fund has provided nearly
$6,000 in scholarship opportunities for
children and adults alike. Primary funding
is generated by donor funds at the
Winston-Salem Foundation. This year, the

Twenty-year-old Donell Williams has always seen and
admired the Sawtooth building in passing but had never
stepped foot inside until hearing about the Art Journaling
Workshop and the scholarship program last year.
“I was getting into mixed media pretty heavy,” he said,
explaining his growing passion of putting different mediums
on a piece of paper and making them work together.
Donell said he didn’t really know how to play with mixed
media in these ways before coming to Sawtooth. “All I
knew was how to put them on a piece of paper, but I
didn’t know how to make them harmonize,” he explained.
“Now, I actually have the order of operations… I found that
in myself.”
Without the scholarship, Donell wouldn’t have been able
to take the Art Journaling Workshop and may not have

Donell was able to take his first class at Sawtooth—the Art

She first found her passion for metals as a student at
Iowa State University, where she started on the Art
Education track—until she saw the metals studio.
The rest, as they say, is history.
She graduated and came to Winston-Salem in 1987,
and the Arts Council pointed her in the direction of
Sawtooth. While Sawtooth didn’t have a metals
position available at the time, the school was looking
for a secretary. “And I happened to have a few
skills,” she quipped.

As luck would have it, the Metals/Glass/Wood

Sara jumped at the opportunity to teach others
what she loves most—and hasn’t looked back since.
After all these years, she still has that same passion
for both teaching and metals, and is thrilled to have
a place like Sawtooth where she and others in the
community can learn, share and enjoy the arts.
