KOBF
TRANSITIONING
TO
DIGITAL
At 11:59 p.m. on the February 17th, KOBF will
turn off its analog TV transmitter for the last time.
This means that viewers in the Farmington, Aztec,
Bloomfield and Shiprock areas will only be able to
receive KOB, KOBF and NBC programming with a
digital TV capable receiver, or by cable or satellite.
On February 5th Congress passed legislation
moving the DTV transition date to June 12, 2009.
Many TV stations in the nation, including most in
New Mexico, decided to delay their transition until
the new date.
The conversion process began on February 4th.
The old transmitter had to go back on the air one
last time. It didn’t like it! It started having problems
almost immediately.
Unfortunately, the old transmitter won’t be able
to keep running until June 12th, which means that
KOBF has to transition now.
KOBF is not able to delay, and must switch now.
In late 2005, some viewers may remember that
KOBF was off the air for a few days. It was a difficult
time for the station. The transmitter had failed, and
in a way that was very difficult to repair. After the
transmitter was back on the air, KOBF ordered a
replacement transmitter. This new transmitter
started its life as an analog transmitter, but the plan
all along was to convert it to digital.

Second, you will need an
antenna, and possibly not just any
antenna. Many older antennas will
work just fine, and some viewers
may have luck with just rabbit
ears.

If your old antenna gives you
spotty reception, you may need a
new style. There are indoor
antennas that are designed to
handle DTV signals better than
the older models. Outdoor
antennas generally work the best.
Whatever antenna you use,
make sure that it can receive both
VHF and UHF signals.
The antenna is important
because digital signals act a little
different than what most people
are used to with analog.
A ghost in the picture on an
analog TV is just an annoyance,
but a ghost in the digital signal
may mean that the picture goes
away entirely.
Rabbit ears are especially
prone to ghosting.
Making sure that your antenna
system is also DTV ready will
provide you with the fantastic
picture quality that DTV is known
for.

KOBF has several translators.
The translators will also be
required to switch to digital, but
there is no date by which they are
required to switch.
