IOTA CHAPTER #1 at DU!
IOTA ADVISORS’ UPDATE
This fall has been another record one at IOTA. We now are a brotherhood of over 110 men. The brothers
not only had a successful recruitment, but completed over 1000 hours of community service, raised nearly
$10,000 for Children’s Miracle Network, placed 14 men on the Dean’s List last spring, have started their
march to their fourth consecutive intramural championship, have a brother serving as IFC’s president and
one as a student senator, and much more. We are very proud of our undergraduates and their success in
and outside of the classroom.
This winter quarter the chapter will be hosting a Safe, Smart Dating program with the women of Alpha Phi.
We will also be welcoming DU’s new Chancellor Rebecca Chopp to a chapter gathering.
As we approach IOTA’s 100th anniversary of our founding in 1920 we are excited about our future as
A Powerhouse of Excellence at DU.
My thanks to all of my fellow advisors for their efforts in mentoring and supporting our undergraduates
and thanks to Jay Reano for his efforts on alumni events in Denver and Gregg Witt for those in Chicago.
We are also thrilled that so many IOTAs are now involved as board members with the national fraternity
and foundation as well as serving as local chapter advisors for groups around the country. These brothers
are living the ritual by doing brotherhood, always.

Zeta Beta Tau — A Fraternity
Without Pledging Since 1989
25 years ago, Zeta Beta Tau made history by becoming the first fraternity to
abolish pledging and remove all twotier membership practices. Today, that
decision is more relevant than ever as
fraternities, sororities, colleges and universities, and other student organizations discuss ways to eliminate hazing
practices.

Letter from the President
Vice-Presidents
Fall quarter was a very important quarter for this,
the Iota, chapter. Our recruitment team, lead by
John Kopec, recruited and initiated 34 members.
This recruitment class increased the chapter size
to a campus high of 113 brothers. After recruitment, we continued our great quarter with raising
almost $10,000 for Children’s Miracle Network.
Austin Oberfeld and his committee worked hard
all summer to make sure this Get on the Ball was
successful. Thanks to all alumni and parents that
helped us raise the money for the kids! My Vice
Presidents, Stephen Stanis and Scott Graham
have been working hard all quarter to keep our
brothers busy with events including exchanges,
socials, mini golf, go karts, movies, trips to the
deli, and many more things. They are currently
busy planning ZBTahiti and Formal, which will
both occur in spring quarter. During all of these
things, Iota has been winning lots of Intramural
Sports including bringing home the championship in soccer. Our GPA was once again above
the all men’s average at the university and
Dominic Italia has been doing a great job keeping
this chapter focused on academics. Last but not
least, I would like to give a thank you to Christian
Thorndal Nielsen and Peter Throckmorton for the
effort at their jobs that can sometimes be thankless. As we look ahead to elections this quarter, I
can confidently say we have many brothers looking to run that will do great things for this chapter. Things have been going very well lately at the
Iota chapter and that is due to all of the hard
work of all the brothers here.
Go Blackhawks,
C, F & S,
Nick Young
President of Zeta Beta Tau’s Iota Chapter
Wow, fall quarter went by fast! Throughout the
whirlwind, we were proud of the events that took
place this past quarter. The recruitment chair, John
Kopec, and his committee laid the groundwork for
our outstanding fall rush throughout the summer,
and their hard work certainly paid off with 34 new
brothers, pushing Iota well over the century mark.
Community Service also hit a new high, with the
chapter completing over 1,000 combined hours
this quarter. Alumni football was a great success,
although unfortunately the alumni did pull off a
win with a strong showing from the recent graduates, and a surprise-rushing touchdown from
Steve. There has been a lot for Iota to be excited
about in the past half year, and we are confident
we are set up to reach many new highs in the near
future.
C, F & S,
Scott Graham
External Vice President
This quarter has had its share of benchmarks for
the Iota chapter of Zeta Beta Tau – we’ve hit new
highs in what seems to be every committee in the
fraternity. With the initiation of 34 new brothers,
our Traditions and Rituals committees had their
hands full, but performed well above expectations. Our Rituals committee, led by Josh Lansky,
did a tremendous job of hosting our initiation in
the university's Gottesfeld Room, bringing the
new brothers into the fraternity with class. Our
Traditions committee, tasked with organizing our
retreats, helped to bond this class to the rest of
the fraternity, aided greatly by our BDD events
and the bi-weekly fraternity lessons held by our
Provost, Layne Hopkins. Perhaps our most
impressive committee this fall, however, was
Philanthropy. Austin Oberfeld and his committee
took it upon themselves to raise the bar of this
fraternity’s philanthropic efforts, and to use the
chapter’s now over 100 manpower to achieve
their high goals. With Austin and his committee,
as well the entire fraternity, supporting this effort,
we were able to raise over $10,000! It was an
amazing thing to see as a senior how far the fraternity has come in all aspects of fraternity life,
and I look forward to more progress the rest of
this year and beyond.
It’s great to be a Zebe!

Brotherhood Education
Hello, my name is Layne and I currently hold the
position of Provost within the fraternity. As the
Provost I am responsible for the education of the
chapter as a whole. This includes inviting speakers to chapter, having leadership workshops, and
running new brother education for freshman during their first quarter in the chapter. Over the last
year we have had speakers that include the
Chancellor, DU Career Services, a MS society representative and Campus Safety. I personally
believe that these speakers provide a unique
learning opportunity for the chapter because they
teach us about leadership, heritage, and show us
what our philanthropy goes to. I also believe that
it is important to help the junior and senior classes find potential jobs while also helping the freshman and sophomore classes prepare for the
future. This is why I try to have a workshop or
speaker that is focused on the future each quarter. This quarter DU career services will be coming to the chapter and informing brothers about
their program. The DU career services is an excellent program that can provide job opportunities
with Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Arrow
Electronics, and many other organizations.
Speakers are a critical part of the development of
our chapter, but it is brotherhood that truly
makes up the roots of our fraternity. ZBT has
been a very progressive chapter throughout its
history. In 1954 ZBT opened its doors to men of
all creeds, religions, and race and in 1989 ZBT
tossed aside its pledge process and eliminated
hazing. This has led to a truly unique education
experience that creates brotherhood through true
bonding instead of a two tier system. I have spent
the last year revamping the education program to
focus on supporting freshman as they transition
through one of the largest transitions in their life.
New brother education now focuses on informing
them about the history of the chapter and the
general information they need to know about
Greek Life while also supporting them through
their first year of school. The education experience begins with new brother education where
freshman are reminded that school comes before
everything. In the end we are here to gain an
invaluable education. It also focuses on being
socially aware, having integrity, and creating a
strong brotherly bond. While new brother education is the core program of our education it never
ends there. I have had the honor of watching
everyone from the freshman to the seniors grow
throughout my three years in this chapter and I
truly believe that the Iota chapter has positively
Brotherhood
My name is Nathan Bracy and I am the Brotherhood
Development chair for Zeta Beta Tau’s Iota chapter.
I’m a senior and joined ZBT in the winter of 2012.
As Brotherhood Development (or BDD) chair, my
duties are to keep my brothers interested and
engaged in ZBT. Ultimately, if a brother is thinking
about dropping the fraternity it is my job to gauge
what went wrong. On a daily basis, I look for fun
and interesting activities for the fraternity to do
together. For example, we have gone to play minigolf, paintballing, played laser tag, bowling, and
other events.
In addition to this, the BDD chair works with the
Provost, or the new brother educator, to create lesson plans and teach the new brothers about their
fraternity. Lastly, I try to make myself available to
all brothers in case they need advice or anything
along those lines.

Parent/Alumni Relations
This past fall quarter was yet another fun quarter
here with the Iota chapter. As the chairmen of
parent and alumni relations I had the pleasure of
helping organize several events throughout the
quarter. We had our annual fall alumni football
game and am sad but not surprised to say that
the alumni took home yet again another win as
they have had great success in years past against
the undergraduate team. We had a great turnout
for our alumni poker event as well at our house.
Parents weekend was great to see so many parents come out and see the house and meet many
of our brothers, following our hockey team’s win
against Boston College that night! Overall it was a
great fall quarter and I am looking forward to this
coming winter. My job as chairmen is to help
keep parents and alumni connected with what is
going on with the Iota. As always if you ever have
any questions or possible suggestions for parent
and alumni events please reach out to me at
[email protected].

Academics
Risk Management
ZBT Iota once again showed its commitment to academic excellence this past quarter. Iota maintained
one of the foremost overall GPA averages among
fraternities at the University of Denver, and had a
greater overall GPA than that of the DU all men’s
average. In the spring quarter of 2014, Iota was
proud to name 13 brothers to the Dean’s list. These
brothers each had a GPA equal to or greater than
3.75 for the quarter. A major goal for this fall is to
beat this already impressive number of brothers on
Dean’s list.
This quarter had a number of new brothers
obtained from fall rush, each of which went
through the new brother tradition of attending
weekly study tables, as well as meeting with our
faculty academic advisor, Greg Grauberger. New
brothers were counseled on useful study habits
and on ways of being proactive in their classes and
in relationships with teachers. Brothers who were
having difficulties meeting the ZBT Iota GPA requirement went through much the same process. They
attended study tables and met with Mr. Grauberger.
Helping these struggling brothers is one of the most
important aspects of the Academics Chair position.
ZBT Iota is proud of its academic accomplishments, and aims to forever increase its academic
quality. Iota will never relent in its efforts of sustaining a prestigious academic record.
C, F & S,
Dominic Italia
Academics Chairman
Risk Management took another huge leap forward
for the Zeta Beta Tau Fraternity Iota Chapter. We
strived to set the right tone moving forward in the
quarter by introducing to the new initiates what it
means to be ‘your brother’s keeper’, because all
things aside, upon being initiated into this powerhouse of excellence, we become family. And family comes first. With this mindset, we implemented
rules to manage our fraternity’s social events in the
most effective and efficient fashion. The risk management schedule was designed to ensure further
bonding between brothers as a member from each
class was always on staff, accentuating the need for
brotherhood among all and the imperativeness for
cooperation in order for success. In light of these
adjustments, the brothers were very willing to raise
their hand to help the risk management efforts
without being asked, showing how far we’ve come
in valuing safety and protecting our family!
C, F & S,
Alexander Hill
Risk Management Chairman
Athletics
Sports! We had yet another successful quarter of
athletics competing in five sports. We had six
teams playing in intramural soccer, flag football,
volleyball, basketball, and broomball and co-rec
broomball. The soccer team took there season all
of the way to win the championship. Our football
team also made it to the end of the season however lost in championship by a tragic one point.
Overall it was a great season and we are on our
way to yet another overall Greek athletic champion title.
In addition to intramural sports we also had in
house games with our new athletic equipment.
On any given day you can find a few brothers
playing basketball on the court behind the house,
but we also organized a brotherhood event,
which brought out our new freshmen to participate in a tournament.
With winter quarter coming we will be participating in another season of intramural sports and
heading to the mountains for some skiing and
snowboarding. Hopefully without injuries on the
fields or the slopes we will continue our pursuit
of the overall Greek athletic championship!.

Recruitment
Philanthropy
As the fall quarter came to an end there were many
great things to reflect on over fall quarter and look
forward to for the rest of the year. With a total of
40 bids handed out, we not only had the best
retention rate the University of Denver Iota chapter
has ever had, but also the largest fall recruitment
class in our history. We initiated exactly 34 new
brothers this fall! Our chapter has continued to
grow from last year and is still the largest fraternity on campus while still maintaining our standards
as the number one fraternity at the DU.
This rush experience was a little bit different than
the rush processes in the past due to some
changes with IFC. This year we were allowed two
on campus events and one off campus, which is
one less on campus event from last year. Our on
campus events included a BBQ on Friday and
cigars and sandwiches or ‘Stogies and Hoagies’ on
Sunday. In the past, indoor skydiving has been an
extremely popular off campus event but we decided to change things up this fall by switching to
Paintball. Paintballing could not have gone any better. It allowed for endless conversation with
prospects and encouraged teamwork in the 10 vs.
10 games. With this outstanding bonding event
and an overall great showing of both brothers and
prospects, we will continue to do paintballing next
year as our off campus event.
With fall recruitment passed, we have already
begun planning for the winter. With the help of the
E-Board and a brotherhood of well over one hundred brothers, we will continue to initiate quality
men into our “Powerhouse of Excellence”. I am
extremely proud of this chapter and my committee
with the results from this fall. With that being said,
we are always accepting recruitment recommendations. If you know anyone interested or simply
wants to see what Greek life has to offer, pass along
their contact information via [email protected]

DENVER
This quarter was a huge success with our Get On
The Ball fundraiser. This fundraiser goes to the
Children’s Miracle Network to help support young
children who cannot afford certain medical treatments. We were able to raise over $10,000! We
could not have done it without the help and support of all the parents, alumni, and brothers of
this chapter. I was thrilled with the success we
had this past quarter am excited to start working
on Red Nose Days our winter philanthropic event
which supports the Children’s Miracle Network.

Our House
A typical day as the housing director at Zeta Beta
Tau fraternity is a thrilling ride through three floors
that create our home. I wake up earlier that most
brothers in the house, I walk around to see what I
can find to put into that day’s work orders. While
my main job is to maintain the cleanliness, safety
and efficiency of the house and I am there for the
brothers. Being a young alumnus I find I can be a
mentor to our younger brothers. Furthermore, I am
the liaison between the housing corporation, cleaning crew, catering service and the University. I am
an employee of DU. My job is straightforward; make
sure the house is in a livable and safe condition for
current and future brothers to enjoy a special place
brothers before us have worked hard to maintain.

Our Rituals
This fall we were happy to initiate 34 new members
to our brotherhood. For initiation ritual our advisors
were able to attend. During retreat, new brothers
were able to connect through old brothers stories
and experiences. The rituals of ZBT Iota are continuing to bring out brotherhood closer together. As is
a ZBT tradition we start each meeting with a reading from our Ritual. In planning our programming
we are mindful that it should bring our ritual to life.

Interfraternity Council
This past quarter I continued to hold my position as
president of the Interfraternity Council (IFC). Along
with this position there was no Vice President of
Recruitment, or Vice President of Risk Management
slated, because of this I took on those two positions as well. This has been challenging but it has
also encouraged excellence in myself, and in the
ZBT Iota Chapter. While I am in this position I work
to hold my chapter and my brothers to a higher
standard in order to use ZBT as a role model, and
standard setter for the rest of the Greek
Community. In this position I have been lucky
enough to realize all that our chapter is doing right,
but also how we can improve. I have been able to
work alongside our chapter president and chairs to
get a better idea of what chapters want to see here
on campus, and how I can help influence these
changes. I hope to continue challenging ZBT, and to
be challenge by my brothers as I move forward in
this position.

clients elect to give us. My family, Trish, Melissa, Scott
and I are extremely excited about Melissa’s wedding in
May. Scott is the executive assistant to the Number 1

Craig Mason ’88
Craig “Brother Murray” Mason just passed his 14th
year as a Microsoft employee based in Denver. ZBT
philanthropy made a deep impression many years ago
and Craig has taken this to heart with his yearly
fundraising for the National Multiple Sclerosis
Society’s Bike MS Colorado ride. Together with several
other ZBT’s including David Brereton, Mike Sachs, and
Rob Brereton, Team Conehead in 2014 raised
$50,456 with 28 riders and an average of $1806 per
rider, with Craig leading the team as Captain
Conehead with just over $8K in funds raised! Craig
lives in Lone Tree, CO just 20 minutes south of DU
with his wife of 15 years Cindy, their daughters Sarah
(Age 10, the Artist) and Ella (Age 7, the Athlete). In
2015 Craig plans to study for and receive his Private
Pilot license.

I'm a stay at home father to a 12-year old son. I'm
working on my second master's degree, this one in
Criminal Justice from Grand Canyon University. After
working in collegiate athletics for 16 years, I plan on
transitioning into becoming a criminal investigator. I
reside in State College, PA. I serve as president for the
Penn State University Men’s Hockey Booster Club and
as an assistant coach for one of the State College
Middle School hockey teams. Still single, but looking
for my wife. Four years ago, I adopted my son, Dmitrijs
from Latvia. He keeps me busy with his hockey and
lacrosse.
