the Broads Authority 2014 guide to Eating out in the
2014
In this
guide...
You’ll find some of the very best the Broads has to offer in terms of
eating experiences, including traditional pubs, speciality seafood
restaurants and cosy riverside tea rooms.
Every business featured serves local ingredients - which could
include beef from farmers, game from estates, samphire and seafood
from the coast and locally-grown fruit and vegetables.
And even better, these establishments have been quality checked by
independent assessors and scored highly. Quality in Tourism judged
that all achieved at least 60% in their tests.
The Broads Authority started the Quality Charter
scheme back in 2001 with just a handful of
establishments. Today, there’s a fine range to choose
from and each year standards get higher. So relax and
enjoy the Broads - Britain’s Magical Waterland - and
take your pick.
At the back of this guide (pages 17 to 22) you’ll find lots of ideas for
other things to enjoy in the Broads - boat trips, canoeing, cycling and
much more…

Going out for quality time
The Broads is part of the family of national parks, with delights for
all the senses, whether you want to feast your eyes on big skies, hear
the booming of a bittern, one of its rare birds, touch feathery reeds,
smell the sweet scent of wild honeysuckle or just savour your next
meal. Besides eating out, the Broads offers a fantastic range of other
activities for your quality time, including all kinds of boating, walking,
cycling, birdwatching, fishing and scenic train rides.
The Broads is a place for all seasons,
with lots to offer in winter as well as
during the warmer months. Some
boatyards stay open right through
the year for day trips, and so do
some bike hire centres and other
places to visit, such as Fairhaven
Woodland and Water Garden at
South Walsham, Wroxham Barns
and the Bure Valley Railway.

Canoeing
Gently rolling countryside, quiet lanes,
wide open skies - take to two wheels
and you’ll discover hidden backwaters,

centres throughout the Broads offering
day, half-day, hourly and family rates.
Children’s bikes, child seats and tandems
are available at some centres.
The Broads is a great place to
go up the creeks with a paddle.
Canadian canoes are suitable for
all the family; they usually carry
up to three adults but please check

Hire centres offer day, half-day,
hourly and 24 hour rates. They
supply buoyancy aids, and advise
on safety and routes. Canoeing is
ideal for exploring the headwaters
(less tidal waters). We don’t
recommend canoeing in the lower
reaches. If you do you need to be
extremely experienced, fit and able.

Walking
The Broads has over 190 miles (300km) of
footpaths through some very attractive landscapes.
Boardwalks are often the best way to reach marshy
areas of the Broads and many are on nature
reserves. Easy access paths and boardwalks are
suitable for wheelchair users and people with
pushchairs. Dogs are allowed on public rights
of way under effective control, but many nature
reserves don’t allow access for dogs.
Three long distance routes also pass through the Broads, the Weavers’ Way,
the Angles Way and the Wherryman’s Way, which has some related circular
walks and follows the route of the River Yare from Norwich to
Great Yarmouth.
Broaden your horizons with two train lines. From Norwich the Bittern Line
goes through Wroxham to Sheringham on the North Norfolk coast, and the
Wherry Lines go east from Norwich to Great Yarmouth and Lowestoft. The
Wherry Lines will take you through spectacular expanses of grazing marsh
and you can even stop off for RSPB nature reserves at Strumpshaw Fen and
Berney Marshes. Both rail lines have websites with lots of info to help you.
