Summer is the time to slow down and enjoy each precious day of warmth, sunshine,
travel, and fun. Summer is also a great time of year to visit the center. On those days
you could imagine eggs frying on the street, you can stay cool with us. The summer
calendar is loaded with activities, events, guest speakers, and of course, food!
We’ll have trips, parties and informational programs. So, grab a friend, or come
alone to make a new friend, it’s a cool way to spend your summer!

Fun Fact: In the past three months, we issued 45 Plainville Senior Center
key cards. This means we have new members joining the center, past
members looking for a new card that may be worn out from over use, or
just lost. We also have six new bus riders. We love that you are here!

July 8th (NOTE DATE CHANGE): "The Chaperone" by Laura Moriarty
Only a few years before becoming a famous silent-film star and an icon of her generation, a fifteen-year-old Louise
Brooks leaves Wichita, Kansas, to study with the prestigious Denishawn School of Dancing in New York. Much to
her annoyance, she is accompanied by a thirty-six-year-old chaperone, who is neither mother nor friend. Cora Carlisle, a complicated but traditional woman with her own reasons for making the trip, has no idea what she’s in for.
August 5th “The Replacement Wife” by Eileen Goudge
Camille Hart, one of Manhattan’s most sought-after matchmakers, has survived more than her fair share of hardships. Now in her forties, she has already survived cancer once, though the battle revealed just how ill-equipped
her husband Edward is to be a single parent. So when doctors tell Camille that her cancer is back—and this time
it’s terminal—she decides to put her matchmaking expertise to the test for one final job. Seeking stability for her
children and happiness for her husband, Camille sets out to find the perfect woman to replace her when she’s gone.

SENIOR SPOT LIGHT
Meet your fellow volunteers
We thank you for what you do!
Otherwise known as the “Three Amigos,” these friends of over forty years can be regularly seen
together, and they are multi-faceted, important volunteers for the center.
SANDY GERMANO grew up in Roslindale. As a child, she and her husband of 32 years were
neighborhood friends. They raised their five children in Roslindale and eventually Norwood, where
she lived for 38 years. Sandy has 13 grandchildren. As a family, they all gather to make homemade
ravioli for the holidays. When her children grew up, she decided to downsize and moved to Plainville
where she has lived for 18 years. Sandy has worked in administrative positions at Norfolk Bristol
Ambulance, Stop & Shop, and Poirier Appliance. Now retired, Sandy still enjoys bowling every
Thursday as she has for 30 years. Some of her volunteer work at the center includes, Vice President
of the Friends of Plainville Seniors, receptionist, Sociables Dance, and breakfast.
MAUREEN HEADD grew up in Quincy and lived in various towns in the south shore. She met her
husband at Walpole High School, graduated, married, moved to Foxboro and raised their two boys.
Maureen worked as a full-charge bookkeeper for law firms in Boston. And worked for companies in
Jamaica Plain and South Attleboro. She retired five years ago but continues to work part time as a
bookkeeper. Maureen decided to come to Plainville Senior Center by chance. A relative had a WII
bowling game, she loved it, and found out the center plays the game. Her volunteer help includes a
member of the Council on Aging Board, receptionist at the center, and Sociables Dance Committee.
JUDY MOLLOY grew up in Newton. She lived in Walpole, then Foxboro with her husband and
three children. She moved to Plainville ten years ago, next door to Sandy. Judy worked as a secretary
at various companies including Norfolk Bristol Ambulance, an Ophthomologist for ten years in Norwood, and East Coast Fireproofing for ten years. She has been retired for three years, yet continues
to volunteer at the center. She is a Co-Board Member of the Council on Aging Board, and recently
underwent extensive training to become a SHINE Counselor at the center. Judy enjoys working the
Tuesday’s breakfasts.
These ladies also volunteer for Project Reassurance by calling homebound seniors daily. The trio all agree they
love dining, traveling, and spending time with family. Sandy, Maureen, and Judy along with a few others, go out
to dinner every Friday night together. They say coming to the center is an important part of their lives. “We
have met so many new friends, and really enjoy being here.” They are looking forward to an exciting trip to
France together in August. Thank you for being such a big help to the center!
Happy Birthday & Happy Anniversary to all celebrating in July and August!

Thoughts from George Carlin
Don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the
sweaty things.
If man evolved from monkeys and apes, why do we
still have monkeys and apes?
I went to a bookstore and asked the saleswoman,
"Where's the self-help section?" She said if she told
me, it would defeat the purpose...
Could it be that all those trick-or-treaters wearing
sheets aren't going as ghosts but as mattresses?
If a man is standing in the middle of the forest
speaking and there is no woman around to hear
him... is he still wrong?
Is there another word for synonym?
Isn't it a bit unnerving that doctors call what they
do "practice?"
Where do forest rangers go to "get away from it all?"
What do you do when you see an endangered animal
eating an endangered plant?
If a parsley farmer is sued, can they garnish his
wages?
Would a fly without wings be called a walk?
Why do they lock gas station bathrooms? Are they
afraid someone will clean them?
Why don't sheep shrink when it rains?
Can vegetarians eat animal crackers?
If the police arrest a mime, do they tell him he has
the right to remain silent?
Why do they put Braille on the drive-through bank
machines?
How do they get the deer to cross at that yellow
road sign?
Is it true that cannibals don't eat clowns because
they taste funny?
What was the best thing before sliced bread?

One summer evening during a
violent thunderstorm a mother
was tucking her son into bed.
She was about to turn off the
light when he asked with a tremor
in his voice, "Mommy, will you
sleep with me tonight?" The
mother smiled and gave him a
reassuring hug. "I can't dear,"
she said. "I have to sleep in
Daddy's room."A long silence
was broken at last by his shaky
little voice: "The big sissy."
