MEN’S SOCCER 2005 GAME 3 – CONCORDIA vs. ST. THOMAS – SEPT. 14, 2005 – JAKE CHRISTIANSEN AC GAME 3 St. Thomas (21/00 MIAC) at Concordia College (11/00 MIAC) September 14, 2005 Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex Moorhead, MN GAME TIME: 4:00pm SERIES: St. Thomas leads the series 1251 SERIES STARTED: 1987 LAST MEETING: St. Thomas won 10 LAST YEAR’S RECAP: Freshman Nick Radigan's 30foot blast above a leaping Concordia goalkeeper with 1:11 remaining gave host St. Thomas a 10 victory over the Cobbers. The Tommies outshot Cobbers in shots on goal 105 Concordia had a corner kick with 90 seconds left but tried a short pass and dribble. The ball was kicked out, and Tommie Jeremy Pope took the loose ball near midfield and dashed all the way near the goal before dishing to Radigan on the wing. Radigan punched a perfect shot to the top left corner above the outstretched goalie for the winning goal. Junior Nik Pickett had eight saves in goal for the Cobbers, while Tommie goalie Danile Hutton made five saves in the second half to pick up the win. SERIES HISTORY: Three words stick out when discussing the Cobber/Tommie men’s soccer series, “one goal games.” Eight of the last nine games in the series have been decided by a single goal. The only game that was not decided by a lone score came in 1998 when Concordia bettered the Tommies 51...St. Thomas has won the last four games in the series. The last time Concordia beat the Tommies was back in 2000...four of the five wins for the Cobbers in the series have come at Jake Christiansen Athletic Complex. Concordia owns a 421 alltime mark against the Tommies at home. ..the most goals scored by a single team in the series is six. St. Thomas beat Concordia 62 in Moorhead in 1990. GameDay Kickoff (What you need to know about today’s ConcordiaSt. Thomas matchup) Ø Concordia is playing their third straight home game to start the season. The Cobbers were supposed to have an away game on Sept. 4 but the game was canceled due to rain. The three straight home games to start a season are the most in program history. Ø Sylvester Ndhlovu currently leads the Cobbers in scoring. Ndhlovu broke out of the scoring gate in Concordia’s last game against St. Scholastica. He scored twice to help the Cobbers claim the 30 victory. That was Ndhlovu’s first multiplegoal game of his career. Ø Six different Concordia players factored in the scoring sheet of the last game. Last year 13 players had at least one point for the Cobers. Ø Sophomore goaltender Dustin Pattengale made his college debut in Saturday’s game. Pattengale came on in the second half and pitched a shutout in 45 minutes of action. Ø Another Cobber player notched a collegiate first against St. Scholastica. Freshman forward Kwaku Opoku scored the first goal of his career. His “nugget” in the second half gave Concordia a comfortable 30 lead. Ø After today’s game, the Cobbers will embark on their toughest twogame road trip of the season. Concordia will travel to Gustavus to take on the Gusties on Saturday, Sept. 17, at 1:00pm. They will then turn around and play at Macalester on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 4:00pm. Ø St. Thomas played well in a 11 split in Spokane, Wash., last weekend. The Tommies surrendered an own goal and lost 32 to No. 21ranked Whitworth, and then beat Pacific Lutheran 21. Ø Tommie freshman forward Vanjelis Ngwa of Cameroon has scored in every game and has a goal and two assists overall. Freshman Andy Gikling of CretinDerham Hall has two goals. Ø St. Thomas has a long hiatus before returning to MIAC play again. The Tommies do not play another conference game until Sept. 23 when they play at Bethel. In between, they will play three nonconference games, including Cobber season opening foe the University of Mary. The win was also Cobber head coach Damian Koshnick's first collegiate victory. The shutout victory is the first Concordia shutout victory since the first game of last season when the Cobbers beat Northland 20. The threegoal margin of victory is the biggest win since the opening weekend of 2003. In a game that had the feel of a seasonopener, Concordia scored twice in the first and then once more in the final period to beat the Saints for the seventh consecutive time. Concordia was coming off an unusual eightday rest period from its first game of the season due to the cancellation of the team's game against Simpson last Saturday. The Cobbers looked energized, healthy and hungry in the opening 15 minutes as they had a pair of chances just miss the goal. The Saints’ defense had pulled up on the play in an attempt to draw Ndhlovu offside, but Evenstad’s welltimed pass was able to free Ndhlovu for the goal. Ndhlovu collected his second goal of the half when he beat Whitehead to the near post after stealing the ball deep in the Saints defensive third of the field. The teams traded scoring chances to start the second half as St. Scholastica tried to notch a goal to bring the Saints within one. The backbreaking goal came at 69:36 when Ryan Elling sent a ball across the goalmouth and Kwaku Opoku was able to collect the ball and fire a low shot into the far side of the goal. For Opoku it was his first collegiate goal of his career. The Cobbers outshot the Saints 179 in the game and held a 76 edge in corner kicks. Whitehead finished with two saves for St. Scholastica, while the Cobbers' twogoalie tandem of Brett Oestreich and Dustin Pattengale turned aside five shots to pick up the victory.
