Variety - The Children’s Charity
We are proud to be choosing our third Miss World Canada on Sunday, May 13, 2012 who will
go on to represent Canada in Miss World 2012 to be held in Ordos, Inner Mongolia.
President of the UK-based Miss World organization, Julia Morley, coined the phrase “Beauty
With A Purpose” more than 25 years ago, and since then more than $500 million has been
raised in its name in support of children’s charities across the globe, bringing help and hope
to hundreds of thousands in need. Among the many recipients of this outstanding fundgenerating activity has been Variety International of whose Board Julia Morley is a member.
Variety Pageants have raised close to $200,000 for children’s charities through its Miss Canada
Teen Global and Miss Octoberfest pageants. In particular, the last competition raised well
over $100,000 for Variety, the Children’s Charity, BC.
Competitions such as Miss World Canada should be venues where aspiring ladies may
showcase their talents and dreams while doing good for the community. 10% of each
contestant’s score is based on her fundraising endeavours for Variety. There is also a silent
auction where 100% of the proceedings go to Variety.

A Message from Miss World Canada 2011
RIZA SANTOS
My experience as Miss World Canada has truly been a gift from
God and I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who
richly blessed my life with the opportunity of being crowned Miss
World Canada 2011. It has been a year filled with adventure, sincere
friendships, learning, and growth.
I am so grateful for the wonderful people that I have had the
opportunity to meet along the way. Volunteering with Variety – The
Children’s Charity enriched my life personally and it gave me great
joy to be able to see the positive impact that can be made in the lives
of children.
In support of Variety – The Children’s Charity, the Miss World
Canada Organization and myself were able to bring together
various not-for-profit organizations such as the Calgary
Wildrose Lions Club, Calgary Filipino Lions Club, Visminsa
Charities Foundation, Knights of Columbus, and other
generous business owners such as Manila Capital Ltd.,
Great Life Financial Ltd., Solid Industries and Machine Shop
Ltd., Philippine Financial Services Inc., SHE Lingerie, XTreme
Photography, Ravenscourt Capital, Dr. Rose Geonzon, Mr. Ray
Tantay, and Marlborough Ford. Thanks so much to all of you for
your generous contributions and support.
The title of Miss World Canada has also afforded me opportunities
to travel across Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom,
and the Philippines. It has been an unforgettable year and I am so
grateful for the unconditional love and support I have received from
my family and friends. I extend my heartfelt thanks to the Miss World
Canada Organization and its amazing volunteers, also to the dedicated
staff of Variety – The Children’s Charity. My memories and the lasting
friendships I developed are the treasures that I will always keep in my
heart.
And now in passing on this beautiful gift of opportunity to my successor, I
want to congratulate the new Miss World Canada. May your year be richly
filled with blessings and opportunities as you go forth representing the

A Message from the Chairman
Humility is truly the first step to succeeding in life.
I must admit that at one time, I regarded a pageant as simply a beauty contest. However, after
meeting our contestants and working with so many dedicated people in preparing for Miss World
Canada, I am grateful that I no longer suffer from such a narrow perspective.
The first Miss World pageant was hosted in 1951 and today is held in 120 countries with winners
from each country proudly representing their nation as they compete for the Miss World title.
The global interest in Miss World has continued to escalate each year, reaching a worldwide
television audience of 3 million viewers.
Today, Miss World is an international movement which empowers women to become leaders.
Our pageants are about cultivating inner beauty, achievement, promoting tolerance, self respect
and giving back. We celebrate global culture by actively integrating diversity and supporting
communities, charities and bringing awareness to challenging social issues.
A famous comedian once said, “Ironically, we as a society pick politicians by the way they look
on TV and we pick Miss World by how she stands on issues.”
To all our staff, volunteers and sponsors - words on paper cannot not suffice to communicate my
gratitude for your efforts. It is truly your time, effort and resources that have ensured the success
of Miss World Canada. Your commitment, passion and generosity are truly amazing, and serve
as my inspiration.
Enjoy the show!

Monique Atusa Ataei COQUITLAM, BC
I aspire to become a role model for young women, in helping them to overcome their many challenges in life and to
pursue their dreams. My other interests lie mainly with the arts and living a rewarding lifestyle.
I was born in Tehran in 1991. My mother and I moved to North Vancouver, Canada, when I was three years of age.
I discovered a passion for the visual and performing arts. As a child, I won several local visual arts awards. In highschool, I focused more on my studies and living a healthy lifestyle involving running. I have found a home within the
Faculty of Environment at Simon Fraser University because the Geography program has broadened my knowledge
by allowing me to learn more about global issues.
I am very active within the SFU community, as I often find myself involved in campus fundraisers, awareness
programs and social events. I wish to see our campus as not only a place for academic achievement and career
advancement, but also a place for friendship, social involvement and community spirit. I would like to see our
society focusing more on women’s strength and embracing peoples’ individualities.

I am 18 years old, and I reside in the Beautiful British Columbia. I have lived in Burnaby for about half my life, and I
am very thankful to be a delegate for Miss World Canada 2012. My hobbies consist of: sketching/painting, reading,
and listening to music. Art is one of my main passions as well as one of my talents. Another one of my passions is
playing sports and staying fit. I have participated in: soccer, swimming, wrestling, mui thai, body building, yoga
and pole dance for fitness. I am active 7 days of the week, apart from my full time occupation. I plan on attending
a post-secondary institute for health studies. My dream job is to inform and educate teens and young adults about
overall health.
My main reason for entering this pageant is because it holds a strong statement about taking initiative and giving
back to the community. I realized my desire of helping those in need when I volunteered at a local senior home. I
would come home every day feeling exuberant, knowing that I had offered a beneficial service out of my own time.
Miss World Canada helps inspire the general public by sending out the message of humanitarianism, the act of
kindness. It does so by raising funds for Variety Children’s Charity. I would love to give up some of my time to
contribute to this benevolent act.

Katie Cire
VANCOUVER, BC
I was born on December 30, 1990 and was raised in Ponoka, Alberta where I graduated from St. Augustine High
School. During this time I volunteered as Student Body President. It is in my nature to take it upon myself to ensure
the health and welfare of others and I have been presented with Citizenship awards, Stewardship awards and a
Leaders of Tomorrow Award. I am passionate, responsible and charitable. These skills have been demonstrated
through many volunteer hours with children’s programs and in hospitals.
Following through with my dreams I now attend LaSalle College in the Fashion Merchandising program and
live in Vancouver British Columbia. I was fortunate enough to have met Catherine Beckett and she inspired and
encouraged me to apply for Miss World Canada 2012.
Now that I have been accepted to compete I feel that this opportunity gives me a platform to set an influential
example to youth on how true beauty is not found in superficial appearance but in the way a person acts. Beauty
should not be looked upon in a narrow sense, but must have a meaning. Through Miss World Canada 2012, I aspire
to guide the world to recognize that beauty has a purpose.
Lisa Deane AURORA, ON
Having earned a well-decorated honours English literature degree from the University of Toronto, St. George, I’m
currently crafting the manuscript for my debut novel, and working as a freelance editor/journalist. “I always knew I’d
spend my life in love with the pen. There’s nothing else I’d rather do.”
At my alma mater, peer-led charities stirred my philanthropic instinct and I was fortunate to have donated to the
Students Against Hunger program. Having discovered the transcendent power of reading as a child, my personal
humanitarian goal is to help others escape less-than-ideal realities, finding solace and solidarity in the shared
human experience that is the essence of all good writing.
Outside of the creative arts, I enjoy my own brand of personal wellness. I love the healthy sensation that comes with
staying active. I can’t think of a better way to train for life’s fast-paced journeys!
None would be worthwhile, though, without the support of family and friends. My “family” – that is, everyone dear
to me – is very involved. Mountain Top Spring Water, for example, is more than a sponsor; it’s a family business. I
have a lot of great people in my life and Miss World Canada has introduced more.

Tanya Halata
WEST VANCOUVER, BC
Originally from Toronto, I moved to Vancouver when I was young. I graduated from Rockridge Secondary with honors
with distinction, then studied Fashion Merchandising at Blanche Macdonald Centre, finishing in the top percentage
of my class. Making a difference in the lives of children is important to me, since volunteering at children’s summer
camps at the age of 12. With a remarkable passion for hockey, I volunteered as a mentor to underprivileged children
through HEROS hockey program.
My deep affection of animals led me to volunteer my time to animal shelters around Vancouver. I was recognized
as the youngest person to donate to the International Fund for Animal Welfare to stop animal abuse. Showing my
compassion and zeal to donate my time to those in need, I trained my dog to become a service animal, visiting the
sick and aging in hospitals and homes.
Some of my other passions include English-style horseback riding, soccer, hockey, and tennis. After being highly
affected by horseback riding, I realized my ultimate dream was to open a non-profit organization for mentally
disabled and underprivileged children. As a Miss World Canada contestant, I feel blessed to have been given the
opportunity to give back to those in need. Through this amazing opportunity, I am excited to be a role model for
the world as a humble and considerate young woman, embodying beauty with a purpose in everything I achieve.

contribute to something greater. I also have always been an active athlete in sports, including: soccer, basketball,

I am a strong, independent young woman who is driven. I want to be Miss World Canada to promote natural beauty
as I have a gap between my teeth and curly hair. These make me beautiful and I wish to encourage other girls to
embrace what they look like and to find confidence within themselves as I believe beauty comes from within. As
Miss World I would be a positive, realistic role model, and I want to make a beneficial impact on those who I am
able to touch.

‘Beauty with Purpose’ is a perfect way to define my goals in life. Enrolled as a student in the Early Child Hood
education program at Ryerson University, I have had the pleasure of working with all types of age groups and
special needs children in class room settings and day care settings. I have done lots of volunteer work for daycares
and kindergarten classrooms. One of my biggest joy in life is to know that I can make a huge difference in a child’s
life just by encouraging and reinforcing a positive attitude.
Toronto, Canada has been my home since I was born. I have a Greek school Diploma and a Bilingual certificate for
French and English. I am currently taking my Real Estate Course which also appeals to me. I believe education is
very important and I am always willing to learn more.
In my own eyes, beauty has always been defined with something a person possesses first and foremost within. A
beautiful heart will always portray a beautiful person who has great ambition and lives their life with purpose by
making a difference. I am confident in saying that I have a beautiful heart which is why I strongly believe that I am

VANCOUVER, BC
I am an eighteen year old university student studying Arts at the University of British Columbia. I was born in
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, yet I was raised in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. I lived in Mexico between the ages of eight
to fourteen, and moved back to Canada for high school. Because my parents remained living in Mexico, I lived with
my older sister throughout high school. My upbringing has raised me to be an exceptionally independent and
responsible young woman, as I essentially lived my teenage years as an adult.
When I came to university, my goal was to be a well-rounded student, and I believe I succeeded. I am a member
of Delta Gamma sorority, which allows me to give back to the community through our philanthropy, which is the
Canadian National Institute for the Blind. In addition, I am also a floor representative for my house in my residency
on campus. This position has improved my leadership skills as I help create and organize events.
I chose to take part in Miss World Canada because I want to continue to pay it forward through volunteer work as
well as continue to be a leader.
Denisse Liwanag
VANCOUVER, BC
At 19 years old, Denisse Liwanag is a young woman determined to be heard. In a world where beauty is most
equated with what is seen with the eyes, she hopes to represent the voices of the overlooked beauties around the
world. It is Denisse’s belief that beautiful people are characterized by their selfless, loving actions and not solely
by their appearance. She hopes that her participation in Miss World Canada 2012 will be a platform to spread this
worthy message among the many others causes she holds close to her heart.
Denisse was born and raised in Vancouver, BC. She is currently a public relations university student with a strong

Tala Manson
SURREY, BC
As a 17 year old growing up in Vancouver BC, I’ve learnt and taught myself many things. Ever since I was a child, I
always took a liking in athletics. Starting in elementary with volleyball, and wrestling, in which I earned gold medals
for. I’ve always been an all-round person. Taking part in different types of artistic productions as well as excelling
academically.
Entering high school I knew that I was going to make sure I tried everything, but still keeping my foundation
strong. I played volleyball all through grade 8 to grade 11, and ranked as the top setter in the province. I kept
academics first and was very time efficient. As a grade 12 student, I’ve developed many qualities since I was a
child. I’ve become independent in the sense that I rely on myself before I let others get involved. I’m very punctual,
meeting deadlines even with a lot of pressure.
I know how to produce quality work other than just rushed within a short time limit or deadline. I am very well
known in groups, work and school because I know how to present myself as an outgoing and easy to talk to person.
I believe in quality over quantity and strive to perfect these qualities because I know that qualities like these will
get me far in life.

play sports such as: Soccer, Volleyball and running track. I was inspired by a former Miss Canada, and ever since have
been trying to make difference in people’s lives.
I am currently working on a Leadership project for Bethesda which is an organization for Teen moms who want a

I am a huge believer that everything I do has a consequence, so let that consequence be a good one! I am here

volunteering through my life will allow me to achieve a dual relationship between being a leader, and at times an

I have always been interested in pageants growing up and never thought that I would get to have the experience
to be a part of something so amazing. I’m very excited to be competing in the 2012 Miss World Canada pageant. I

I love animals, so at a young age, my family would motivate me to go out and volunteer my time for places like

others faces.
I was born and raised in a small town located near Vancouver, BC. I enjoy cooking and would love to travel. My goal
is to make a difference in the world we live in and make others happy. No matter whom you are, or where you come

A smile is a curve which straightens up everything. I have competed as a golfer, a pianist, a painter, and even a
basketball player, but now, I am here, as a pageant girl, to light up my stage.
I believe in ‘I am who I am’ instead of ‘I am who I want to be’. Height, face, and body are what one is born with, but
in order to be a role model of all young ladies worldwide, there is a price of true beauty and great passion that I am
able to pay. As well, I can see myself empowering others, through presenting myself in a positive way.
I am not a catwalk model, nor a soldier fighting for the Canadian forces. I am simply a high school student with goals
and dreams. I have dreamed of being a fashion designer, a TV reporter, a teacher, a lawyer, and more. I think every
child deserves to dream and should chase after what she believes in.
I believe in confidence, pride, commitment and encouragement. These qualities of mine not only will help me
through this charitable event, but also will follow me and will guide me through my life. Because I am entering this
pageant for the future of many children in need, I believe the positive values I convey will attract everyone with a
