Bubblegum Bump Game +
By Kelly Nelson
This center is designed for two students to practice addition, while playing a popular math game.
In order to play this game, the students will need 10 game markers each in their own color
(double-sided chips or bingo chips work best). They will also need three dice.
How to play: Player 1 rolls three dice and adds the numbers together. They then cover the number
on the board that is their sum. Player 2 takes their turn by rolling the dice, adding, and placing
their color chip on their sum number. If their sum number already has a chip on it, then they can
bump the other chip. If they bump their partner - then their partner takes back their chip and
gets to use it again. If a player rolls a number that they have already covered, they can stack
another chip on their own. When they do this, it is locked and that space cannot be bumped.
The player to use up all their chips first wins!
CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and
subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 =
10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13 – 3 – 1 = 10 – 1 = 9);
using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows
12 – 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the
known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
According to the terms set forth by many of the artists that I use for graphics
and fonts I must acknowledge their wonderful work here!
