Fall for OC
So Much to Do
Suntans by Day
With 34 cities and hundreds of points of interest, Orange County
is full of possibilities. Here are a few itinerary ideas to get you
started, and discover more at anaheimoc.org.
Sunsets by Night
A few days at the beach will leave you relaxed and suntanned. Catch a
wave of ideas for some fun OC beach escapes by day and by night.
Newport Beach
Early morning – Nothing is more “real” than the Dory fishermen selling
their catch of the day at the bustling fish market at the base of the
Newport Pier - It doesn’t get fresher than this.
Mid-morning – Take in the local flavor and rent a bike (there are several
locations in town) to cruise the boardwalk past million-dollar
beach cottages, miles of sandy beaches and great views.
Afternoon – By car or by foot, hop on board the
inexpensive three-car auto ferry that crosses
Newport Harbor to Balboa Island.
This island is filled with charming
architecture and spectacular
harbor views. On Mariner
Street, (the town’s main street),
you’ll find art, clothing and
beach-themed shops. For a
melt-in-your-mouth frozen
treat, try a Balboa Bar (page 7).
Evening – Pacific sunsets and
coastal vistas seem to last
forever from the Newport
Pier against the silhouette of
Catalina Island and the lights
of distant coastal towns.
Harbor-side dining and
casual nightlife on the Balboa
Peninsula are great ways to
complete your Newport day.
Laguna Beach
Early morning – Up for a hike? Mild to moderate trails in Laguna
Canyon Wilderness Park lead to fields of wildflowers uncovering this
region’s natural beauty, or explore sea life up-close at the intriguing tide
pools of Crystal Cove State Park.
Mid-morning – Sunday Brunch at the beach is the good life at its best.
Taste this coastal pleasure where sipping champagne and drinking in
ocean views are how it’s done. Experiences range from being surrounded
by a stunning rose garden at Las Brisas restaurant to trying gourmet
cuisine as the waves break just 25 feet below at Splashes restaurant.
Afternoon – It’s time to put on your flip-flops and discover Laguna
Beach’s colorful downtown district from Heisler Park’s shimmering
4 | DESTINATION UPDATE 2007
hilltop views to an array
of intriguing art galleries,
eclectic shops and
inviting sidewalk cafés.
Evening – Romantic views are
free here and nearly everywhere
you look. This rugged coastline
offers plenty of places to steal a
kiss as you watch the orange sun
set over the Pacific Ocean.
Huntington Beach
Early morning – Take a
morning jog or walk along
the boardwalk, then grab
breakfast at Michele’s Sugar
Shack Café, an authentic
surfer hangout and
Huntington mainstay.
Mid-morning –
Catch a wave and get
the ride of a lifetime!
Take a surfing lesson
from the pros at Toes
on the Nose (located
in the Hyatt Regency
Resort). These patient
experts can teach even
a novice to become
a California surfer… at
least for a day.
Afternoon – The local color here is always
tan. People watching is an art form as you cruise the
surfwear shops, pubs and local eateries on Main Street. Take
your pick of fresh fruit or handcrafted items at the Farmers Market on
the famous Huntington Beach Pier every Friday.
Evening – Keep the heat of the day going at night, as nothing tops off
a Southern California day like a cookout on the beach. Fire pits are at a
premium in the summer, so stake out your area early and don’t forget
the firewood, hotdogs, and maybe even some marshmallows. Enjoy!
During the fall months, the crowds diminish and it’s a great time to visit Orange County
while the weather is still sunny and warm. Escape on a weekend getaway and fall for OC!
Friday
Sunday
Kick off your weekend with Anaheim’s home teams!
Catch a MLB Angels game or an NHL Anaheim
Ducks game (see page 21). Grab a pre-game beer
or quick bite at J.T. Schmid’s Brewery (across the
street from the Honda Center) or El Torito Grill
and The Catch, both within walking distance of
Angel Stadium. After the game, head to Downtown
Fullerton for some barhopping fun along Harbor
Boulevard and Commonwealth Avenue.
Before heading back home, wake
up early and play one of the
award-winning golf courses
(page 24) or be pampered at
an OC spa. Try a Southernstyle breakfast that’ll really
lift your spirits at the House
of Blues’ Gospel Brunch. Then,
spend the day at one of the
area’s unique museums or drop
in for an early-afternoon show
at the Orange County Performing
Arts Center.
Saturday
Enjoy OC’s natural side in the morning. Tour
the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve, a 300-acre
sanctuary and one of California’s most significant
coastal wetlands, or go on a guided kayak tour
through the waters of the Upper Newport Bay
Nature Preserve, where up to 35,000 birds may be
seen at one time during November. (Weekend tours
with a naturalist are from 10-12 am.)
If you simply must see fall foliage, head to one
of OC’s regional or wilderness parks. The native
California sycamore trees change to various shades
of yellow at Caspers Wilderness Park, O’Neill
Regional Park (RP), and Santiago Oaks RP. During
late fall, the liquid ambers’ leaves turn gold, yellow
and red, at Craig RP, Irvine RP and Mile Square RP.
Grab lunch at one of the area’s prime outdoor
dining spots (page 17). Then take the scenic drive
down Pacific Coast Highway, stopping along the way
at boutiques, coffee shops or parks with coastal
view pathways. Order a sunset cocktail overlooking
the ocean at one of the coastal resorts, such as the
Montage Resort & Spa, Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel
or the St. Regis Resort Monarch Beach.
Stay for dinner or make your way to the Irvine
Spectrum Center for a variety of dining options,
from decadent cheesecake and traditional
American fare to authentic Mexican or exotic
cuisine. After dinner, laugh it off at a comedy show,
play billiards, grab a movie or ride the Ferris wheel.
Still going? Check out one of OC’s hottest
nightclubs: Club Vegas, Sutra Lounge, or Tentation
Ultra Lounge. And if you’re looking for something
more low-key, chill out in Costa Mesa at Chat Noir’s
Jazz Lounge, The Clubhouse, The LAB’s Gypsy Den or
The CAMP’s AIRe.

FACT
Knott’s Berry Farm’s story began in the 1930s when Walter Knott transplanted several
frail vines of Ralph Boysen’s abandoned experimental berry plants to his farm. Knott
nurtured the scraggly plants to fruit-bearing health and named them “Boysenberries” after their
originator. In 1935, he began selling the large tasty berries at his farm stand – now a world-class theme
park, and crowds steadily returned in great numbers… They haven’t stopped coming since.

where you’ll find all the latest trends and next season’s hits
now. Here’s a quick take on how to shop – OC style.
Smart and stylish, fun and sporty, or quirky and unique… You’ll
find the look for all your fashion moods at Fashion Island
and South Coast Plaza, collectively offering more high-end
designers than Rodeo Drive.
Go on a coastal shopping spree down scenic Pacific Coast
Highway. Hit the beach cities’ downtowns for kitschy souvenir
shopping, art galleries, consignment finds and surfwear
galore. Along the way, Corona del Mar Plaza and Crystal Cove
Promenade feature classic OC stores, one-of-a-kind boutiques
and mouth-watering restaurants.
If your companions are less than enthused by all the shopping
possibilities, head to Downtown Disney® District, Irvine
Spectrum Center or The Block at Orange. These locations mix
shopping with entertainment, from sports bars and skate parks
to movie theaters, live music and family fun – plenty to keep
them busy.
In search of a completely different retail experience? The LAB
and The CAMP are popular with OC insiders for Bohemian
chic style, active wear and a fashion-forward look. But, if
mainstream classics are your perfect fit, The Market Place and
Westfield Shoppingtown MainPlace are ideal.
Finally, remember to bring back gifts, original artwork, that
OC t-shirt and SoCal-inspired home décor for everyone else on
your list. There are plenty of nearby outlets if you’ve splurged
too much on yourself. Don’t worry, we won’t tell!

Orange
DINING
Orange County’s award-winning restaurants serve an eclectic array of creative
cuisine. The casually sophisticated OC lifestyle offers the perfect setting for a
range of dining options from sidewalk cafés and local microbreweries to upscale
fine dining and lively oceanfront restaurants. Savor gourmet treats, comfort food
specialties and new fusion dishes in OC’s trendsetting culinary scene.
FRESH Picks
From California cuisine to
farmers markets, Orange
County’s menu of fresh
ingredients is a key element
in its recipe for
culinary success.
Popular in OC,
California cuisine is
marked by an interest
in “fusion”–integrating
different cooking
styles and ingredients
– and tends to be
freshly prepared
due to the influence
of California’s health-conscious lifestyle. OC’s
award-winning chefs turn common foods, from locally grown
avocados to mahi mahi fresh from the Pacific, into sublime cuisine.
You might run into these chefs stocking up at one of
the local farmers markets, which are rising visitor
destinations as the culinary travel trend continues
to sweep the globe. So for all you
“foodies” looking to get a real taste of
OC, try a signature California cuisine
dish or handpick your own treat at
one of these great farmers markets…

What’s
New
Eight new restaurants are opening their doors by the end of 2007 in Anaheim, all within walking distance of the
Disneyland® Resort, local hotels and the Anaheim Convention Center. (See pages 2 & 3.)
Morton’s The Steakhouse debuted in December 2006 as a taste of what’s to come in ‘07. This fine dining
restaurant specializes in classic, hearty American fare (pictured) surrounded by rich décor. Morton’s Bar 12-21 is a
great place for casual gatherings, featuring a selection of more than 50 martinis and the $4 Bar Bites menu.
Located on the street level of the new Stadium Lofts in the Platinum Triangle, El Torito Grill was the first new
Anaheim restaurant to open in 2007. Borrowing from Indian and Mexican cultures, the menu is a fusion of
contemporary and traditional native foods of Mexico, and the bar features hand-shaken margaritas, a wide
selection of oak-aged tequilas and a festive atmosphere.
Ruth’s Chris Steak House opened in April 2007 next to the Courtyard by Marriott in Anaheim. The chic décor
offers a comfortable, yet elegant atmosphere to enjoy a menu of New Orleans-inspired appetizers, the finest
U.S. Prime steaks, fresh seafood and classic desserts, all complemented by an award-winning wine list.
Located along Katella Avenue, the new Anaheim GardenWalk opens its first phase in November 2007, including popular restaurants
such as Bubba Gump, California Pizza Kitchen, Cheesecake Factory, McCormick & Schmick Grill, P.F. Chang’s and Roy’s of Hawaii.
Just 10 minutes from Anaheim, SevenS Steakhouse & Grille opened in late 2006 and has a bold, comfortable atmosphere. Led by Executive
Chef Craig Rouse, the culinary team delivers carefully presented dishes, such as sake marinated sea bass and the Kurobuta pork chops, that
taste as good as they look.

decadent spa treatment rooms and the finest in spa services,
products and techniques.
Glen Ivy Hot Springs Spa introduced its Under The Oaks
massage area, a private outdoor space where guests can
enjoy unique massage treatments inspired by the natural
surroundings, in early 2007. During Winter 2007/08, the spa
plans to build The Green House around its two newest pools
to keep guests warm during the cooler winter months and also
shield them from the sun’s ultraviolet rays during the summer.
Anaheim welcomes the Hotel Ménage onto the scene as
the city’s newest boutique hotel. In June 2007, the hotel will
complete a total renovation of the former Holiday Inn’s guest

rooms; a 1,300-square-foot water experience, inspired by
Japanese water rituals; and a new “do-it-yourself” Body

massages, salt water pools and
orange peel masks – to create
that native SoCal glow.
Fresh and Fruity – The California
citrus polish treatment takes the power of vitamin C to a new
level! Spas combine essential oils, including orange, lemon and
lime, with Dead Sea salts to create a body polish that transforms
dull, tired skin. Finish with a rich milk treatment to complete the
full-body exfoliation.
Surfside Stretch – Become one with the rhythm of the Pacific Ocean
and sign up for a beachside yoga class. Professional instructors help
you dive into the natural healing of yoga and reach a feeling of
well-being in your own sanctuary of sea and sand.
Beauty Wrapped Up – Indulge in a full head-to-toe treatment,
wrapped in a nourishing seaweed mask complete with lavish
essential oils to detoxify and quench the skin. For the ultimate
soft-skin solution, add a sand-scrub foot treatment using natural
ingredients such as beach sand, marine botanicals and sea salts.
A Much-Kneaded Treat – Undergo full-body indulgence in the hands
of one of OC’s acclaimed massage therapists. Deep relaxation awaits
with variations such as
the Sea Stone Sonata
Massage, employing
heated stones, essential
oils and Swedish massage
techniques. Or inhale the
ocean breeze while you
embrace pure relaxation
during one of the area
spa’s beachfront
massages or private
cabana sessions.
