What is it?
• One of the biggest festivals on the Hindu Calendar
• Also known as Deepawali. Deep – Lamp, Awali – Row of.
• End of fiscal year
• Five day festival
When is it Celebrated?
Amavasya (New Moon) night of the month of Karthik.
This falls sometime during the end of October or the beginning of
November.
Why is it celebrated?
• Return of Lord Ram after 14
years of exile.
• Victory of light over darkness
• New year
• Summer harvest
Preparing for Diwali
• Cleaning of homes (physically and
metaphorically)
• Decorating of homes
• Buying new cloths, jewelry and
household stuff
• Buying gifts for friends and family
• Preparing sweets and other snacks
Day of Diwali
• Visit friends and family and
exchange gifts
• Wear new cloths
• Pray
• Light the Diyas and place them all
around the house and outside
• Have a feast
• Burst firecrackers
Who do we pray to?
• Goddess Lakshmi – The Goddess of
wealth and prosperity
• Lord Ganesh – New Beginnings and
remover of obstacles
