God the Sower and His Gift of Nature.
This week the Gospel picks up were we left off last week, in the
thirteenth chapter of Mathew.
Jesus proposed another parable to the crowds,
saying “The kingdom of heaven may be likened
to a man who sowed good seed in his field. (Mt 13:24)
Jesus often used nature as a metaphor to help us understand our
relationship with our Creator. It is especially graspable for our parish. We are blessed to have an
enviable view --living amidst the beauty of creation, witnessing up close and many participating in
the planting and harvesting cycle. We are receivers of the promise made to our ancestors i.e.,
deliverance to a land flowing with milk and honey (Exodus 33:3). We live in a land filled with milk
and honey, daily bread, water to quench our thirst and much more as evidenced by our haul from
Safeway.
This blessing of having blessed direct access to see and enjoy the majesty of this God given gift is a
call to action. “When someone has been given much, much will be required in
return” (Lk 12:48). Nature ministers to us as we hike, bike, or just take in the surrounding area. All
creation is good when it is what it was intended to be – God has a plan. The face of God can be
found in all his handiwork.
Pope Francis states that ‘we have received from the Creator a common gift: nature. Interventions
on nature are meant to be performed responsibly – for the benefit of all. We are to keep
theecosysem in balance’.
Nature is not to be abused, exploited, or desecrated. It is not just God’s gift to us in this present age.
We are mandated to be good stewards. Our stewardship will enable us to pass this gift on to future
generations (re-gifting in this case is good -- it is not just for unwanted Christmas presents lol).
The Catholic Climate Covenant website reminds us that the impact of climate change falls heaviest
on the world’s poor. ‘As Catholics, our faith demands prudent action’. Pope Benedict XVI
insists, “Before it is too late, it is necessary to make courageous decisions” to curb climate change.
This week we contemplate that God the sower went out to sow. Perhaps we can also include last
Sunday’s Gospel admonition “To those who have ears hear” (Mathew 13:1-23). As we
comprehend our lesson, the meaning of these metaphorical parables, let us also note that they are
centered in nature – reminding us of our stewardship.

bears fruit, and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty."Matthew

IN NEED OF FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE?

Often, recently, St. James parishioners arriving for Sunday Mass have been greeted by individuals or families holding signs
requesting financial help. Perhaps our response to those begging on the church plaza is a measure of our faith.
Some parishioners have responded by opening their hearts (and their wallets) to answer this plea for help. Others have invited
those requesting help to join them at hospitality. Still others have engaged them in conversation. Members of our St. Vincent de
Paul conference have given them groceries and, more importantly, have given them information about how to get financial
assistance.
Lately, articles and letters have appeared in the Davis Enterprise discussing “aggressive panhandling” in Davis. Some community
members have suggested that residents consider refraining from giving money to beggars and to redirect their giving to local
charities focused on aiding the needy.
Our parish and our community have programs in place to provide substantial help for those in need. In the community,
organizations such as S.T.E.A.C., Davis Community Meals, and Grace in Action assist the needy with food, clothing, and shelter.
Faith communities have many programs, in particular the annual Interfaith Rotating Winter Shelter, serving our homeless
brothers and sisters during the coldest months of the year.
Here at St. James, members of our St. Vincent de Paul Society conference provide substantial assistance for the homeless and the
“invisible poor” of Davis and Yolo County. Last year, due almost completely to the generosity of St. James Parishioners, our St.
James Vincentians provided more than $35,000 in direct financial aid to those in need. This included help with rent, utilities,
medical bills, medication, and a variety of other expenses. Additionally, through our various drives, we have collected and
distributed approximately $10,000 in in-kind goods such as food, clothing, and paper goods to individuals, families, and
organizations. Often, Vincentians visit those we serve in their homes to determine how best to help them.
Each year, the diocese returns to the parish 25% of the funds donated by St. James parishioners to the Annual Catholic Appeal. In
2012, Fr. Bosque asked that SVdeP take charge of these funds to help those in need. These funds are to be used, eventually, for
programs to help those we serve develop the skills necessary to free themselves from the cycle of poverty.
Beginning this weekend, Sacristans at Mass will have special cards with SVdeP
contact information as well as our brochure, “Guide to Resources for General
Assistance,” detailing services available here in Davis: meals, food distributions,
and referrals for a variety of assistance.
Donating to beggars at our doorstep may not be the best solution to their
problems. A five-dollar bill may buy a beggar a cup of coffee. That same five
dollars, combined with others from generous parishioners can go much further
in addressing the deeper, more systemic problems of poverty and homelessness.
If you really want to help those in need, consider picking up an SVdeP donation
envelope in the vestibule of the church.
Catholic Camps
Summer Camp IS for Teens
Camp Pendola is offering four different programs for high
school youth. In addition to the leadership programs
offered in the past we have added a one week backpacking
trip and the formation of the Camp Pendola High School
Volunteer Corps. Skills learned in the camp environment
are transferable to school and ministry program in the

Voice Workshop

Newman will be hosting a Summer Faith Group for all

ESPEREMOS PACIENTEMENTE EL JUICIO
Mateo, más que los otros evangelistas, habla sobre
Jesús que sale de su hogar y regresa. Muchas veces sale de
su casa porque las multitudes se reúnen afuera y quieren
que les enseñe. Hoy, después de haber enseñado y
despachado a las multitudes, sus discípulos lo siguen hasta
su casa buscando más explicación a lo que parece ser, al
menos a nosotros hoy, parábolas muy directas.
Tanto para Mateo como para Marcos, cuando Jesús
está en la casa con sus discípulos siempre significa un
momento especial para enseñar y nos debe hacer prestar
atención. Usualmente es Jesús quien nos da consejos
sensatos sobre lo que significa ser sus seguidores. Hoy no
es diferente: seguir a Cristo significa estar listo a
encontrarse con los seguidores del mal, tener que vivir y
trabajar y predicar entre ellos, esperando pacientemente
ese juicio que sólo puede venir de Dios, el juicio de
decidir justamente quién será arrojado a las llamas y quién
vivirá para ser un santo ejemplar. Escuchemos esta
enseñanza casera para que significa lo mismo para
nosotros que seguimos a Cristo hoy.
Escuela de la Palabra
La Escuela de la Palabra es un grupo de oración que se reúne
semanalmente, en el cual se lee y se reflexiona sobre lecturas
bíblicas, este grupo es guiado y supervisado por la fraternidad

HACIENDO CRISTIANOS
En las dos semanas previas hablábamos de dos [el Credo y los sacramentos] de los cuatro pilares en que se sostienen
nuestra fe. En esta ocasión leeremos sobre los otros dos pilares: la moralidad y la oración.
La moralidad (vivir la fe)
“Las canciones de la música tradicional suelen estar llenas de corazones rotos; hablan de amores que se han convertido
en desamores. Dos personas que se aman deben de tratarse mutuamente de una manera que así lo muestre, porque
cuando eso no se hace, se pierde la fe en la relación. Al igual que unas maneras de comportarnos expresan amor, otras
muestran rechazo a ese amor.
Dios nos ama y por ello nos invita a que, a nuestra vez, le amemos a él y a los demás. Si
decimos que amamos a Dios debemos de actuar de una manera que manifieste ese amor y no de
una manera que muestre rechazo a ese amor. Así de simple. Entonces ¿Por qué es tan difícil?
Vivir con una moralidad cristiana no debería ser tan difícil. Solo hay diez mandamientos a
seguir, y Dios es tan bueno y nos ama tanto que ¿quién podría siquiera pensar en hacer algo que
no debiera por él? Aunque nos duela admitirlo, la verdad es que los seres humanos nunca
estamos satisfechos con lo que tenemos. Siempre queremos más. Nuestros corazones
insaciables buscan satisfacción en otras cosas y lugares y no en Dios. Al igual que una persona
casada que parece ‘tenerlo todo’ pero aun así comete adulterio, también nosotros podemos
fácilmente olvidar lo bueno que Dios es con nosotros e ir a buscar la satisfacción en otro lado.
Vivir la vida desde la moralidad cristiana nos es solo cuestión de simplemente evitar las cosas malas. Se trata de ser
conscientes de lo mucho que somos amados y de responder a ese amor de la manera en que nuestro Dios del amor nos
pide que lo hagamos: buscando la saciedad solo en él y amando a nuestro prójimo. Dios nos es fiel y no le podemos
hacer daño con nuestros actos inmorales. Los únicos corazones que corren el riesgo de ‘romperse’ son los nuestros.
La oración (rezar la fe)
En una encuesta llevada a cabo hace unos años se le pregunto a personas felices en su matrimonio cuales eran las diez
características más importantes de un matrimonio feliz. Uno podría pensar que el sexo, dada la atención que se le
dedica en nuestra cultura, sería el número uno. Pero esa no fue la respuesta. ¿Cuál fue el número uno? ¡La
Comunicación! Las relaciones duran cuando se comunican.
La oración es una forma mediante la que nos comunicamos con Dios. La comunicación es una calle de
doble dirección: hablar y escuchar. A muchos de nosotros se nos enseñó que rezar es ‘hablar con
Dios’. Pero esta es solo una parte de la dinámica de la oración. Si la oración se entendiese solamente
como hablar con Dios, entonces la insistencia de San Pablo en que debemos ‘rezar siempre’
significaría que debiéramos de hablar a Dios constantemente. ¡Pobre Dios! ¡Imagina tener que
escuchar a alguien que habla sin cesar! Cuando no escuchamos perdemos la oportunidad de oír la voz
de Dios. La oración es el cuarto pilar de nuestra fe católica y que sin la oración corremos el riego de
derrumbarnos, al igual que una mesa que solo tiene tres patas.
¿Y qué importa esto?
¿Qué le importa a un católico creer que los cristianos se hacen, no nacen? Es importante, porque significa que somos
llamados a ser receptivos. La fe es algo que recibimos. No nos pertenece; se nos hace llegar como si fuera una reliquia
familiar que atesoramos, protegemos y pasamos a los otros miembros de la familia. Ser receptivo significa pensar en
Dios como el alfarero y en nosotros con la arcilla. Dios, a través de la Iglesia, nos da forma. La arcilla nos le dice al
alfarero que forma quiere tener.
Oración
Señor Dios, cada día trae una oportunidad nueva para que me hagas uno de tus discípulos. Si recientemente te he
fallado, rehazme para que pueda asirme a mi fe en ti, expresar la fe que tengo, vivir esa fe y rezarte desde esa fe.
¡Gracias por estar conmigo siempre! Amén.”
