The Baptism of the Lord
January 13, 2013
3
Dear Friends in Christ,
Today is the celebration of the Baptism of the Lord. It is the great feast of our
Church that marks the end of the Christmas Season. John the Baptist had the great
honor of pouring water upon his cousin, Jesus. Most importantly the Holy Spirit
came upon Him and announced that Jesus was the blessed Son of the Father. The
Lord now went forth and began His public ministry. Most importantly, He called
forth disciples and commissioned them to follow Him.
As we mark this celebration it gives us the opportunity to look at the gift of Baptism
that we have received. In this sacrament we enter the Church and become members of God’s family. The
Holy Spirit begins to dwell in us. We are washed clean of original sin. We are changed forever!
Over the years I’ve baptized hundreds of people of all ages. I’m always happy when I see one of them
especially after some time has gone by. In particular, I’ve been blest to know the first of all the children. As
a deacon in the summer of 1976, I baptized a newborn named Megan. In recent years we’ve had the joy of
being reacquainted. We have a special bond with each other.
Today is a time to remember those who were part of your baptism. Perhaps these questions will help you to
do so:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Do you know who baptized you?
Where and when did it happen?
Who were your godparents?
Where are they now?
When have you last been in touch with them?
Do you have any godchildren?
Do you keep in touch with them?
Do you have pictures of the baptisms in your family?
When was the last time you looked at them?
This conversation is certainly one that would be good for families to participate in. I’m sure children would
be very interested in hearing the stories of the baptisms of their parents and, of course, their own. If you have
the candles that were given to you, why not bring them out. Light them at your family meal and recall how
Christ has been with you throughout the years.
In the Love of Christ,

A New Year Wish from Spiezio and Affiliates
Over the past year, Spiezio and Affiliates has continued
to serve this parish community to provide counseling
services for those in need. The number of people who
have used these serves has increased tremendously this
past year. In ways, this is a "bitter-sweet" reality. The
"sweet" - is good news - people are utilizing the services
that are available. The "bitter" - is sad news - so many
more people are in need. However, this is no surprise to
any of us. Our world, our lives are becoming
increasingly more difficult, more stressful - full of more
suffering. There seems to be more sin - "being off the
mark". There is increased pain, anxiety, depression,
addiction. The why of all of this…we do not know. We
can blame the economy, technology, being too busy or
any number of things - but blame is simply a reason to
not deal. Instead, people are seeking improved health,
solutions, coping tools and ways to deal with the
suffering through counseling and their faith.
THIS IS THE HOPE! And, we must keep this hope alive
and thriving. God is the HOPE - God's wisdom and love
come to us in times of suffering. We grow more aware of
our own weaknesses and parts and more open to God's
Grace entering into our lives in new ways. This is my
wish for all of us in this New Year. That we may be
present to whatever is happening in our lives and the
world around us. That we will deal with our own
parts. That we will make room for the Wisdom and Grace
of God to enter more fully our lives…and our world.
Peace to your New Year. Spiezio and Affiliates is
available for any counseling needs by calling our number
listed in this bulletin.

10 The Baptism of the Lord
January 13, 2013
Did you Know…? The word 'baptism' comes from the Greek ‘BAPTIZEIN’ which means ‘to immerse, to dip in water’
and that word came from the Greek 'BAPTIEN' meaning 'to dip' or 'to dye'.
John the Baptist, the last of the Old Testament prophets, had been told by God to baptize people using water with the message
"repent for the forgiveness of sins". Water was an Old Testament symbol for cleansing- think of Noah and the Ark. At the
same time, John foretold the arrival of One far greater than himself who would baptize with the Spirit and with fire.
When Jesus travelled down from Galilee to meet His relative, John, at the Jordan River, John was, at first, reluctant to
baptize Him. Jesus said to John, "Allow it now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness". After Jesus was
baptized, the Holy Spirit, in the form of a dove descended upon Him and a voice from Heaven was heard to say, "This
is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased". At that moment Jesus began His public ministry. His baptism was
not one of repentance but it was to fulfill the legal requirement for entrance into the priesthood. He was a priest after
the order of Melchizedek. Jesus was chosen by God, yet He was spotless and so became the perfect high priest AND
the perfect sacrifice for sins.
When Jesus was baptized by John, the sacrament of baptism changed from one of water only (repentance, etc.) to
one of water and the Holy Spirit. A dove, representing the Holy Spirit, descended upon Jesus while today the priest
will use oil. For us, the only ordinary means of salvation is sacramental baptism. It is the means of entrance into
the community of the Risen One, the Church. We become grafted to Christ.
How important is baptism? Jesus commissioned the eleven, after His Resurrection, to "Go therefore and make
disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to
observe all that I have commanded you".
Faith and Action Can Go Together: This year all Elmhurst Churches have been invited to join IC Parish at the Respect
Life Candlelight Vigil. If you have never attended, please consider joining us for the candlelight vigil, prayer service,
light supper and guest speaker on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, beginning at 5:00 in the rectory.
New Evangelization—Adult Faith Formation Opportunity
Chris Hannigan-Wiehn will be making a presentation at Immaculate Conception on Wednesday
January 30, at 7:00 p.m., as a representative of the Newman Institute for Lay Formation of the
Diocese of Joliet. All adults of the parish, particularly the catechists, are encouraged to attend.
A description of the one-session course follows:
Jesus reveals the self-giving and self-sacrificing love of God, and he calls his disciples to bring
the good news of the Kingdom of God to the entire world. The new evangelization is an
invitation to hear this good news of the Gospel again, as if for the first time; it is a call to reencounter the living Lord in and through the Church. This course will help participants continue to answer their
personal call to holiness, to explore the responsibility of all baptized Catholics to spread the Good News, and to
contribute to the Church’s mission of bringing all people to Christ.
Chris Hannigan-Wiehn is a Lay Franciscan Associate who holds a certificate in spiritual direction from the Claret
Center, and Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies from Loyola University. A graduate of the Diocese of Joliet New Wine
Program, Chris is currently attending Catholic Theological Union working toward an advanced degree. She is an
experienced spiritual director for lay and religious women.
Chris has 30 years of professional teaching experience in private and public school settings and has been involved in
the faith formation of adults and youth on several parish staffs. She has served as a volunteer catechist for 42 years.
Chris is presently working at IC as their Director of Religious Education for grades K-5 and serves as a spiritual
director for Mayslake Ministries.

Listen to what our parents say
about ICGS.
“Our school provides ‘the whole package.’
Not only do we focus on academics; but also,
faith, community, and pride in oneself.”
-Deenie Doughty
ICGS provides excellence in education, a
Christian foundation, and unity as a
community. At ICGS everyone comes
together as one to help each other out. It’s
wonderful to see the kids wanting to help each
other out in someone’s time of need.
-Angela Schiele
“ICGS is the best decision you'll ever make to
have your student succeed academically,
athletically and spiritually. High expectations
bring out the best in all of us. My only regret is
that we didn't move him here sooner! “
-Leticia Tait
We believe our new name accomplishes a great deal: it
retains the heritage of our blessed Mother and the
Immaculate Conception (“IC”); it honors our mission as
a Catholic school first and foremost (“Catholic”); and it
succinctly communicates our focus on preparing
students for college (“Prep”). Furthermore, the IC
Catholic Prep Name more clearly distinguishes us from
our elementary school, with which we share a campus.
Our new Tagline – The School for Independent Thinkers
– is how we want people to think about us when
comparing our school to the many other high schools in
the area. It reflects how we want to develop our
Students; it reflects the mindset of faculty and staff we
employ today and will seek to recruit in the future; and
it is what ultimately differentiates us from neighboring
Catholic high schools.
IC Catholic Prep provides six distinct benefits to each
student. More than a grade point average, a diploma or
any athletic achievement, these are the specific
outcomes we want and expect every student to enjoy.
More than anything – more than any name change or
tagline – these benefits are our brand.

Break the Mold.
Experience How High School Should Be.
Reach Your Potential.
Surprise Yourself.
Succeed at More Than Just College.
Matter More.
While we recognize this is a significant step for our
students, parents, alumni and friends of IC, we want to
assure our entire school and the community that this is
an informed decision made from a position of strength
and stability. We firmly believe that today is the
opportune time – the right time – to follow our own
advice and break the mold.

REMINDER! REMINDER!
REMINDER!!
Beginning this month, we will begin
collecting food on a weekly, rather
than a monthly, basis. We continue
to serve 50-60 families each month and
this will help our shelves stay a little
fuller towards the end of each month.
Most needed items are peanut butter and jelly, pasta sauce,
children’s cereal, canned fruit, laundry detergent and
toothpaste. We are enormously grateful for the continued
generosity of our parishioners, without whom our pantry
could not exist. God bless you for your kindness.

Thank You!
We are so
grateful for your donation of
$1,400 worth of gift cards,
$400 in funds for our “Get on
the Bus Campaign” and your
many donations of new hats, thermals, sweaters, socks,
gloves, toys and more. Our clients will be thrilled to
receive such needed items as they brave cold
temperatures and transportation challenges. We are
excited to announce that because of your generosity
and the support of others, 12 formerly homeless
families and individuals now have a home for the
holidays.
Our community of caring donors, 4,000 volunteers and
130 congregations enabled our agency to support 1,398
individuals, serve 122,277 meals and provide 37,801
nights of shelter during 2012. Thank you!

IS ONE OF YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS
TO TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT????
Many of our Christian Ministry committees are in need
of volunteers. Would you consider helping a grieving
family plan the funeral liturgy? How about taking
Eucharist to those who are homebound or hospitalized?
What about preparing food for our PADS clients?
Becoming a Transitional Housing mentor is fulfilling
and life-giving to both the mentor and the client. Are
you up to the challenge? Will you step outside your
comfort zone and try something new in 2013?
Please call Pam at 530-3497.
