Spittelau Viaducts
Address
Spittelauer Lände
1090 Vienna
Austria
.
The project is part of a revitalization initiative undertaken by the
city of Vienna for the Wiener Guertel, an over-dimensioned,
ring-formed slice through the urban fabric. The site is formed via
the culmination of densely overlapping infrastructural elements:
the “Spittelauer Leande” is one of Vienna’s most highly traveled
roadways; the Danube Canal connecting Germany to Hungary. The
housing is built along the Donaukanal, over Otto Wagner’s
elevated metro viaduct.

These 4 gas holders, known as gasometer were built in 1896 as
part of the gasworks at Simmering. After they were closed down,
the 4 historic towers were renovated, converted into apartments,
shopping malls and offices and reopened in 2001. When they were
built, the gasometers were the largest in Europe. They are listed
by the country’s heritage ministry as outstanding examples of
industrial architecture. The renovation goal was to reuse the
external façades of the existing buildings, avoiding total
demolition of the building and minimizing the generation of
demolition waste. The gigantic size of this construction project is
illustrated by the fact that Vienna's Giant Ferris Wheel would
easily fit into each of the four 75-metre high gasometers.

The Looshaus in Vienna (also known as the Goldman & Salatsch
Building) is regarded as one of the most important structures
built in the Wiener Moderne. The building marks the rejection of
historicism, as well as the ornaments used by the Wiener
Secession. Adolf Loos received the assignment in 1909, and the
building was finished in 1910. Upon opening, its appearance
shocked Vienna's citizens, since their overall taste was still very
much historically oriented. Because of the lack of ornaments on
the façade, people called it the 'house without eyebrows'.

In this jewelry shop in Vienna, ornament is both message and
medium. Hans Hollein has taken the basic shell of a 19th-century
building, corrected it slightly, and painted it white. He then
superimposed a clearly differentiated layer of elements not only
functional but fantastic and luxurious. Paradoxically for a jewelry
shop (and quite intentionally), he has used materials in flagrant
disregard of their real value: some are precious and some are
common, but all, glowing or glittering, tease the visitor with an
impression of wealth and mystery. Real marble is used in the
patterned floor, but in the black-curtained backworld of the
safe, under a mock skylight, plastic laminate pretends to be
marble. Real bronze is used as an arch/guillotine over the
entrance, but a headless 'bronzed' African bust is in fact plastic
(text from 'Ornament is no crime', Progressive Architecture/NY).

Judenplatz Museum
Address
Judenplatz 8
1010 Vienna

.
Rachel Whiteread's design for the Holocaust memorial has no
obvious points of reference to the remains of a medieval
synagogue discovered underneath Judenplatz. It is therefore
complemented by two other architectural features - the square
itself and the Judenplatz Museum in the Mizrachi House, which
hosts an exhibition on the life of Vienna's Jewish community
during the Middle Ages. The square and the adjoining streets now
form a self-contained pedestrian area dominated by the
Holocaust memorial and the statue of Lessing. It seemed an
obvious choice to use the old granite paving stones typical for the
city centre for the paving; stones of different size accentuate the
transitions from streets to square and the street gutters. The
lighting system installed on the roofs of the surrounding buildings
allows an even illumination of the urban space.

Hotel Topazz
Address
Lichtensteg 3
1010 Vienna
Austria
.
The new Topazz design hotel can be likened to a glistening,
dark-colored gemstone. Its brown mosaic façade, which absorbs
and reflects the natural light, ensures that this building - on one
of Vienna's smallest building sites - is a real eye-catcher. The
design is characterized by striking elliptical window openings that
jut out slightly. This unconventional, distinctive treatment of the
façade gives this round-cornered building a sense of
weightlessness and elegance as well as an unusually physical
presence within the fabric of Vienna's historical architecture.

A dark, closed block. The curved roof is pulled far down at the
corners; the entire building is enclosed in a 12-cm-thick shell
made of basalt lava. An outdoor flight of steps, 10 metres wide,
leads to the entrance level that lies 4 metres higher than the
level of the courtyard. This entrance level is at the centre of the
building in terms of height. There are two main exhibition floors
above it and two below; a further basement level is used as for
depots and for the building services.
