MESSAGE FROM THE DIRECTOR
Suzanne Watters, Community Wellness & Recreation
[email protected]
Our staff and the volunteer
sports groups have worked hard
to put together the information
on the programs available in our
community in this brochure. As
well, the Department hosts the
Community Registration at our
facility to allow all groups to
show case their programs and
allow residents and newcomers
in our community an opportunity
to gather information on
programs, meet program leaders
and have a one stop shop
registration for all your
Fall/Winter recreation needs.
Each organization will conduct
their own registration under
one roof. This is planned for
September 10Th.
The Department registration will
take place on Sept 20th closer to
the beginning of our swimming
lessons. We hope this will give
everyone an opportunity to see
their other activity schedules
and then register for a
swimming lesson that will fit for
your family.
“I would like to take this
opportunity to thank the
many volunteers in our
community that allow for the
many programs to be
available in our community
and provide us with the
details so that we can pass
the information along to you.
Their valuable knowledge,
skills and time needs to be
acknowledged with a huge
THANK YOU!”
Our cancellation line for storm
closures will be used once again
this season (623-2333). Please
check the line if you are unsure if
a program will be running during
inclement weather. The staff
will be making a decision based
on the weather information
provided by Environment
Canada and putting cancellation
on the line ASAP as well as using
our Facebook page and the local
radio stations.
We are always looking to meet
the needs of our patrons and
welcome your comments and
suggestions, as they are
invaluable. You can contact our
Department in person at our
office at 94 General Manson
Way, by phone at 623-2300 or
email us at
miramichirecreation@miramichi.
org. Your comments and
concerns are logged,
investigated and used to help us
improve our services. You will
receive a response from a
member of the staff so long as
you leave your contact
information.
Thank you for taking time to
explore your options for your 60
minutes of physical activity most
days which will have you
realizing the health benefits
quickly!
Recreation...the benefits
are endless!

Lunch Hour Pickle Ball…Come in and try one of the fastest growing
sports in North America: PICKLE BALL. The game of pickle ball has quickly grown in popularity
amongst people of all age groups. Should you be asking yourself what it’s like to play, it’s a cross
between badminton, tennis and table tennis. Players use wood paddles to hit a waffle ball over a
net. The low impact sport is perfect for getting active and having some fearless fun at the same
time. Come and Join the Fun!!
Afterschool FUNSport is an active afterschool program
where kids ages 6-9 have the opportunity to participate and be introduced to a variety of team
and individual sports at the recreational level. This Multi-sport program means children learn the
skills and concepts of a variety of sports. At FUNSport kids will learn the skills of basketball,
baseball, football, ball hockey, tennis, soccer, track and field, volleyball and many others. This
means kids develop a variety of gross motor and athletic skills that stimulate and develop their
minds and bodies. We feel that it is important that children gain the benefits of being involved in
a variety of sports. The goal is for the children to be introduced to many different sports and
ultimately find something they really like. Drop in fee of $3/visit
Give your child the skills and confidence to enjoy a variety of sports and recreational activities for

MESSAGE FROM THE AQUATICS CO-ORDINATOR
HOLLY ALLISON, COMMUNITY WELLNESS & RECREATION
[email protected]
We are excited to be back
into the indoor pools for the
2016-2017 Season. With a
successful previous year we
are thrilled to be continuing
to offer Life Saving Sport
Fundamentals and Assistant
Instructor along with other
great programs to meet our
community needs.
This year there are new
public swims added on School
Professional Learning Days
along with some great special
event swims including
Lifeguard Appreciation Day,
March Cake Break, and the
Santa Swim. Also please check
out our March Break Camp
and learn the duties of the
Lifeguard.
The Recreation Department
continues to offer the
Lifesaving Society’s Swim for
Life Learn to swim program.
We encourage all children
and adults to take lessons as
swimming is a very important
life skill everyone should have
(Remember Adults, it’s never
too late to learn). As affiliates
of the Lifesaving Society the
City of Miramichi continues
to work on its contributions in
teaching our populations to
swim to survive in order to
help keep our drowning rates
down especially where we are
surrounded by the Beautiful
Miramichi River and open
water activities are more
popular today than ever.
“The Aquatic Staff are eager
to welcome you back indoors.
They have been keeping up
with their qualifications as
Lifeguards and Instructors.
We hope to see you at the
pool for a fun, safe enjoyable
experience.”

How do I register for Swimming?
Registration takes place 4 times per year: in the fall, winter, spring and summer with the dates being advertised on
our pool schedules, facebook page, local radio station and on the City website at www.miramichi.org. Class size is
limited and the initial registration is done on a first come first served basis. A maximum of 4 participants per person
may be registered. After the initial registration, participants can register at the Recreation Office or by phoning
623-2300 with your credit card.
27
Instructional Swim Policies:
Please note that due to the limited space in the instructional swim program, refunds can only be made up to the third
class. Refunds are done through the Recreation Office and will be reduced by a $5 administration fee.
Private Instructional Swim Lessons:
Private instruction is available for those that need a little extra help with their swimming techniques or for those who
prefer not to be in a group setting. Arrangements can be made through the main office by calling 623-2300. The
Aquatics Co-Ordinator will set up an instructor for your needs during a public swim time. The fee for private lessons
is $10 for one half hour and $20 for one hour.
Weather Cancellations:
The instructional swim classes are once a week for 10 weeks so we do incur bad weather or in rare cases, unforeseen
maintenance problems. The Recreation Department now has a dedicated phone line on which we will announce
closure of our facilities. In inclement weather, the number to call is 623-2333 if you are unsure whether your event
will be happening. Cancellations will also be announced on the radio. We will make every effort to replace
cancellations of instructional swim classes but due to time constraints, this is not always possible.
Pool Rentals:
Rentals are available at the Golden Hawk on Saturday & Sunday from 4:00-5:00 or 5:00-6:00 with one hour
afterward in the birthday room. MVHS Pool rentals are on Saturday from 4:00-5:00 or 5:00-6:00 and on Sunday

SPECIAL EVENTS
39
The Facts: In Canada, drowning is the number one cause of unintentional injury deaths among
children aged 1 to 4 years, and the second leading cause of preventable death for children
under 10 years of age. With some 500 fatalities annually, drowning is the third leading cause
of unintentional death among Canadians under the age of 60 and is surpassed by only motor
vehicle collisions and poisoning.
The role Lifeguards/Instructors Play: Much of what a Lifeguard does goes un-noticed by the
public, but Lifeguards are highly trained and certified in preventative measures and emergency
response in an aquatic environment. They are water rescue professionals trained in
emergency care. Lifeguards prevent accidents and are trained to spot potential trouble and
intervene before it becomes life-threatening. They identify hazards and determine safe
practices. They educate the public about the hazards and risks associated with aquatic
activities and how to be water smart.
Swim Instructors on the other hand are highly visible to the public but many people view them
as providing recreation rather than providing a life-saving skill. Swimming is a life skill that all
children need to learn if any meaningful attempt is to be made to eliminate drowning. Teaching
an individual the essentials needed to survive an unexpected fall into deep water is an
important first step to being safe around water. Swim instructors are highly trained and
certified to deliver the swim instruction program to participants which includes education on
how to be safe in an aquatic environment.
Lifeguards and Swim Instructors are equipped to deal with injuries and medical emergencies
and are certified in Standard Workplace First Aid and CPR/AED. One person can be both a
Lifeguard and Swim Instructor.
