T
he Hindley report as far back as 1939 stated:“An essential feature of a scheme of control
for private hire vehicles would be to ensure that the
vehicles do not infringe on the cab’s privilege of plying
for hire”
We believe our right to “ply for hire” is under threat.
The current thinking of the Law Commission is to
discard the concept of plying for hire and not to define
it, but instead use a definition of pre-booking as it applies
to Private Hire. They are also proposing to control Taxi
numbers but not PHVs.
The RMT London Taxi Branch strongly believe that
the “Knowledge of London” and the right to ply for hire
are intrinsically linked. Why complete the Knowledge
to gain a hard earned privilege that is not defined or
protected in law.
The following issues are examples of major failings
in urgent need of reform:•Plying for hire must be defined both in our favour
and in statute
•PHV’s should not be permitted to wait in advance
of bookings or form ranks outside venues.
•Vehicle distinction is paramount the “black cab”
is our unique selling point.
•A managed growth of BOTH taxi and private hire
trades is crucial for maintaining standards.
•Robust enforcement of illegally plying for hire.
Funding must be set at a level capable of dealing
with the size of BOTH taxi and private hire
trades.
•Pedicabs and alike must never have the right to
ply for hire or operate on the highway.
•Crime statistics and plying for hire offences
should be broken down into categories such as
Taxi, PHV, and Unlicensed.
•Taxi ranks overhaul and a fit for purpose strategy
developed throughout London.
•Planning permission for satellite offices to include
No Taxi rank = No satellite office.
•A PHV should always be a PHV and should only
be driven by a PHV driver whether working
or not.
Despite meetings between TfL and various trade
organisations many of these issues remain unresolved
year in year out. This has been further highlighted
recently within various articles appearing in the trade
press.
Tfl completed PHV driver licensing in 2003. When
recently asked how many PHV drivers have been
convicted of illegally plying for hire in the last ten years
they stated that “they do not routinely prosecute or
collate information on illegal plying for hire offences.”
Let’s be clear “Touting ” is not the same as “Plying”.
The RMT London Taxi Branch firmly believes that
the status quo cannot continue if our future and the
public’s safety are to be assured. Leaving London alone
is not the answer both the Law and TfL’s policy must be
reformed. These current proposals could very well put
us in a worse position than the status quo!
So ask yourself this question
“is this as good as it gets?”
With this in mind the RMT London taxi branch is in the
process of writing letters to the various trade organisations
in an attempt to come together in addressing and dealing
with these issues.
Plying for hire allows a Taxi to be publicly hired. It
is now time for the world class London Taxi to be fully
integrated alongside the other publicly hired modes of
transport within the capital. To be treated fairly with
buses trains and trams and not as a second class mode of
transport. The RMT are adamant that in reforming the
law governing taxis and private hire that any loopholes,
lacunas and deficiencies are resolved by way of primary
legislation. If there is a conflict between statute and
common law, It is the act of Parliament which will
prevail and must be followed by the courts. Policy and
enforcement must reflect this!
Calling ALL London taxi drivers and trade
organisations it is time to come together and make a
stand. Let’s be proactive in advance rather than reactive
at the eleventh hour.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION
ON THE FUTURE OF
CAPITAL CALL
MAYBE IT’S BECAUSE I’M
A LONDONER…THAT I
LEAVE TAX SO LATE
ransport for London (TfL) has launched a public consultation on
proposals to withdraw the Capital Call subsidised minicab service,
which currently duplicates the more popular Taxicard scheme. Together,
Taxicard and Dial-a-Ride ensure that disabled Londoners can get around
the city, and contribute towards making London one of the most accessible
cities in the world in terms of transport.
Capital Call was created by TfL in 2003 and operates in just 10 London
boroughs where historically there was a shortage of taxis (black cabs).
The availability of taxis operating in the 10 boroughs has increased and
has contributed to the number of people using the Capital Call service
reducing significantly, by 20 per cent in recent years.
There are currently around 1,400 people regularly using the service,
compared to the 10,000 that use Taxicard in these boroughs. In 2011
the Taxicard scheme started including minicabs as well as taxis. To be
eligible for Capital Call, a user must already be a registered member of
Taxicard and is automatically eligible for Dial-a-Ride - which can be used
for shopping trips, recreation or visiting friends and family.
Capital Call costs £470,000 a year to operate. Because it is effectively
duplicating the Taxicard scheme, TfL is considering its withdrawal. The
efficiency savings that would be delivered would be invested in making
further vital improvements to the capital’s transport network, to the benefit
of more people across London. Garrett Emmerson, TfL Surface Transport
Chief Operating Officer, said: “This proposal reflects both changes to the
subsidised travel schemes and the way in which people are using these
services. Significantly fewer people are now using Capital Call, which
effectively duplicates the Taxicard scheme which now includes minicabs
as well as taxis. Together, Taxicard and Dial-a-Ride would continue to
ensure that mobility impaired Londoners have access to two services that
ensure they can get around the city.”
The public consultation on the future of Capital Call is available on the
TfL website at https://consultations.tfl.gov.uk/assisted-transport/capitalcall until Friday 11 April 2014. TfL is writing to every registered Capital
Call member to explain the proposal and ask for their views.
A decision will be made on the future of Capital Call on a borough by
borough basis in summer 2014.
ondoners are more likely to miss the tax return deadline than taxpayers
in any other part of the UK, figures released by HM Revenue and
Customs (HMRC) reveal.
Around one in nine (11 per cent) of the 560,000 people in Inner London
who had to send in a tax return last year didn’t do so by the relevant deadline
– 31 October for paper returns and 31 January for online submissions. The
one million taxpayers in Outer London were more punctual, with one in
11 (9 per cent) failing to meet the deadline, but they were still the second
worst offenders. The tardiest taxpayers outside of London were in the
North West of England, with 8 per cent of their 890,000 returns failing to
meet the deadline.
Taxpayers in the rest of the English regions fared better. The most
punctual were in the South West, with only 6 per cent of their one million
tax returns arriving late. The other English regions, as well as Wales,
Scotland and Northern Ireland, all registered 7 per cent of late tax returns,
which was the UK national average.
HMRC Director General of Personal Tax, Ruth Owen, said: “Whether
you’re from London, Livingston, Lisburn or Llandudno, the consequences
of missing the tax return deadline are the same – an automatic £100 latefiling penalty. The longer you delay, the more you have to pay. So if you
still have to send us your tax return, take action now.”
Anyone with an outstanding 2012-13 tax return must send it online, and
pay any tax they owe, by 31 January.

TAXI RANKS UPDATE
ARCHWAY TAXI RANK
A new taxi rank in Junction Road, outside Archway Station has been
appointed. The rank is operational between 19:00 and 02:00 and is in two
portions. The first portion is for one taxi and the second is for three.
The rank is not in a suburban area and has not been designated as an
island rank.
MARYLEBONE STATION
Ongoing works in Harewood Avenue have resulted in the northbound lane
being closed between Hayes Place and Harewood Row, but the southbound
lane is still open and the taxi rank is still working as normal.
The works are expected to finish by the end of March 2014 and following
this the road will be reopened.
L
“INFORMAL”
DFT TARGETED
CONSULTATION
O
n the 7th of January the Department for Transport (DfT) sought views
from a select few (7) organisations on a number of proposals to amend
the law relating to taxi and private hire licensing. The 10 day consultation
sought views on the following proposals:
1. to allow PHV operators licensed in England (outside London) and
Wales to sub contract bookings to an operator licensed in a different
district. London PHV operators are allowed to sub-contract to an
operator licensed outside London so it would be a case of establishing
a more level playing field.
2. to address the law as stated in the case of Benson v Boyce. It is
to allow private hire vehicles licensed by a local authority outside
London to be driven by a person (e.g. a family member) who does
not hold a PHV driver licence when the vehicle is not being used
for private hire work i.e. when it is “off-duty”. This is the position
in London so again, it would be a case of estabishing a more level
playing field as between London and the rest of England and Wales.
3. to make it explicit in the legislation applying to taxis and PHVs
outside London that taxi and PHV driver licences should be issued
for a standard period of three years (and PHV operator licences five
years) and licences should only be granted for shorter periods in the
circumstances of an individual case (e.g. probation/monitoring or
where the driver asks for a short-term seasonal licence).

JOHN PAUL PACE
axi Globe is saddened to report the
passing of taxi driver John Paul Pace
– known to many as ‘The Pope’. John Pace
passed away on Wednesday 8th January after
a long battle with Motor Neurone Disease.
A controversial correspondent, who penned
many ‘State of the Trade’ articles for Taxi
Globe and also Taxicab News, John’s heart
was one hundred percent London Taxi
Trade. He will be remembered as one of the
characters of our trade who was never afraid to voice his opinion.
John’s funeral was held at Green Acres Woodland Burials in Epping on
22nd January. If anybody wishes to make a charitable donation the two
charities that have been chosen are St.Clare Hospice that cared for John a
number of times or the Motor Neurone Disease Association. If you wish
to make a donation in John’s memory this is being managed by the funeral
directors, Daniel Robinson’s, Robinson House, Wych Elm, Harlow, Essex
CM20 1QP Tel: 01279 426990. They will collect the donations and then
inform both the charities and the family of all the donations that have been
gratefully received. Alternatively donations can be sent directly to either
establishment.
HOUBLON £50 BANKNOTE
TO BE WITHDRAWN ON
30 APRIL 2014
£
Page 5
50 banknotes carrying the
portrait of Sir John Houblon,
the first Governor of the Bank of
England, will be withdrawn from
circulation on 30 April. From that
time, only the £50 note featuring
Matthew Boulton and James Watt,
which was introduced in November
2011, will hold legal tender status.
Members of the public who have
Houblon £50 notes can continue
to use them up to and including 30
April.
After 30 April, general retailers are unlikely to accept the Houblon notes
as payment. However, most banks and building societies will continue
to accept them for deposit to customer accounts. Agreeing to exchange
the notes after 30 April is at the discretion of individual institutions.
Barclays, NatWest, RBS, Ulster Bank and the Post Office have all agreed
to exchange Houblon £50 notes for members of the public – up to the value
of £200 – until 30 October 2014. The Bank of England will continue to
exchange Houblon £50 notes after 30 April, as it would for any other Bank
of England note which no longer has legal tender status.
The Houblon £50 banknote was first issued on 20 April 1994. The
Boulton and Watt £50 banknote was first issued on 2 November 2011.
There are approximately 224 million £50 notes (£11.2bn) in circulation,
of which an estimated 63 million (£3.2bn) are Houblon notes. Sir John
Houblon was the first Governor of the Bank of England; he was appointed
to this position in July 1694. In 1696 he was re-elected by a General Court
of Proprietors and continued in office until July 1697. The Houblon £50
note was issued in 1994 to coincide with the Bank’s 300th anniversary.
The design on the back of the note includes an image of Houblon’s house
in Threadneedle Street on the site of the Bank’s present building.

FRAUDULENT TAXI
DRIVERS CONVICTED
A
fraudulent black cab driver has been jailed for four months for
fraud as part of Operation Excalibur - a joint investigation with
the Metropolitan Police Service Safer Transport Command (STC) and
Transport for London (TfL). Melios Themistokleous, 58 years, appeared
at City of Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday 7 January charged
with fraud by false representation and possession of articles for use in
fraud. He was sentenced to four months imprisonment on both counts,
which will run concurrently.
A second man, Michael Audsley, 59 years has also been sentenced to
a community order for 12 months after appearing at Central London
Magistrates Court on 13 December 2013 for fraud by false representation
and possession of articles for use in fraud. A third man is due to appear
at Central London Magistrates Court on 28 January 2014 to be sentenced
after being convicted of fraud.
These sentences follow ongoing intelligence led work to crackdown
on this type of illegal activity, which uses Automatic Number Plate
Recognition (ANPR) cameras to target fraudulent taxi drivers who are
posing as legitimate drivers. All three men were arrested in possession of
forged items such as taxi driver licences, badges and plates.
Themistokleous was previously convicted of two counts of fraud in
May 2013, following an investigation by the STC and was sentenced to
a community order for 12 months. Chief Inspector Colin Carswell, Safer
Transport Command, said: “This case demonstrates how seriously we
take this type of illegal activity and how important the intelligence we
receive is to our operation. We will continue to crackdown on fraudulent
taxi drivers who are illegally working in the Capital.”
Steve Burton, TfL’s Director of Enforcement and On-Street Operations,
said: “We are pleased with the sentences handed down to these fraudsters
who have been posing as taxi (black cab) drivers. Licensing of taxi drivers,
as with private hire drivers, is essential in helping to keep the public safe
when they travel by cab - we will continue to work closely with the police
to crack down on the minority of bogus cab drivers who put the travelling
public at risk and undermine London’s legitimate, and iconic, taxi trade.”

LONDON TAXI TO BE
EXHIBIT AT THE HAVANA
MOTOR MUSEUM
I
n a unique international initiative, London
Taxi driver Tony Caccavone is donating his
London taxi to Cuba’s Havana Motor Museum
in the heart of Old Havana. Tony said:
“For 16 years I’ve driven my cab, liveried with
the Cuban flag, around London. This was the
first ever cab in any national colours and it’s
been permanently on the road since I decided to
advertise my love for the island following my
holiday to Cuba in 1996.” Tony was born in 1943 in Camden and lived
there for 40 years before moving to Enfield where he lives now. Over the
years he has spoken hundreds of times on various London radio stations
and he and his ‘Cuba cab’ have become a favourite figure on the roads
of London. He spends much of his time explaining to people about Cuba
and the islands successes in health, and education and its struggle to stay
independent despite the constant United States blockade of the island.
The taxi will be shipped over in February. Tony continued: “The cab
has been a real talking point over the years. From actors and politicians
to Joe Public, from the great to the not so good, it’s kicked off so many
discussions. The vast majority have been positive. People are really
delighted to hear the truth about Cuba and its achievements in health,
education and culture. You’d be surprised at how many Americans have
responded positively and are ashamed of their government’s position. And
over the years I’ve met more and more people who have visited Cuba and
come away with a positive experience.”
“Now I’m delighted that the cab will
be in the motor museum in Havana. All
that these people want is to be able to
determine their futures independently.
I think that’s something people in
London and Britain can understand. I’m
delighted that my cab has played a small
role in spreading that understanding.”
NEW FACE OF NISSAN TAXI FOR LONDON
n 6th January Nissan unveiled
the new face of its Taxi for
London, re-designed to make it
instantly recognisable as one of
the capital’s iconic black cabs.
Based on the company’s successful
multi-purpose NV200 platform,
the vehicle was first unveiled as a
bold and exciting new vision for the
famous London Hackney Carriage
in August 2012. In response to
feedback from the London Mayor’s
office, Transport for London and
other key organisations which have
put their backing behind the new
taxi, Nissan has redesigned the
vehicle to better reflect the iconic
nature of the traditional black cab.
Developed for London, in London,
by Nissan Design Europe (NDE)
in Paddington, at the same design
centre responsible for the Qashqai
and Juke, the new taxi will be
launched in December 2014. It will
have a modern, clean, 1.6-litre petrol
engine equipped with an automatic
gearbox. Nissan are also going to
launch a zero emission electric
version of the NV200 taxi in 2015;
called the e-NV200, Nissan intended
to meet the Maypor’s 2020 deadline
- which has now been brought
forward to 2018. Design Excellence
Manager at NDE, Darryl Scriven,
said: “Having already overcome
the unique technical challenges
presented by the development of a
new Hackney Carriage for London
ahead of our launch of the vehicle in
August 2012, we turned our attention
to making the vehicle look the part.
The Mayor’s office and taxi drivers
were very keen that we maintain the
character of the Hackney Carriage,
making it something that people in
the city can be proud of.
“The main challenges were
concerned with making sure
customers can easily recognise
it as a taxi. Being in London, we
were able to go out and talk to
cabbies about what was important to
them as well as look at the vehicle
from a customer’s viewpoint. It’s
unusual for us to be able to work
on something as bespoke as this,
specifically for one location in the
world and we are very proud to have
been asked to do so.”

HAILO - STEPPING UP
OUR GAME
T
he time has come to step up our game. What does that mean? Hallo
initially started as perceived to be an extra string to your bow.
Something that you can use when you want and reject as many jobs as
you want. This has to change.
The tech team at Hailo have built us the ultimate driving tool yet
some drivers are not fulfilling their part of the Hailo team. This has to
change otherwise we will go back to where we were before. We have
built features into the app that leave our competitors in our shadow. We
have the minimum fare. We have going home. We are shortly going to
introduce Hailo for Business and this will require drivers to be offered
trips that we will have to accept. Why? Simple, if we are going to win
the corporate sector then we have to give them a service that’s second to
none. If we are going to remain at the top then we have to step up our
game.
This all sounds tough but believe me if we don’t change our policy then
passengers will go back to their old ways.
Some drivers are constantly offered work that they reject or ignore will be
reminded that if they don’t step up their game they may be removed from
the circuit and either put back on the waiting list or removed completely.
Why the hard stance? We have almost 500,000 regular passengers and
rejecting work not only gives them a bad customer experience but good
drivers miss out too. This is because if some drivers constantly reject
jobs then passengers will look elsewhere for a service. We won’t let this
happen.
Many drivers have seen Hailo as the best thing to hit the taxi trade for
years. If we want to remain the best then we have all got to go that extra
step to cover more work.
Taking one more job a
day will make a massive
difference. This is your
chance to finish off private
hire. Leave the passengers
stranded and they will
get a private hire car. Do
you want that? Private
Hire companies have had
a massive cash injection
recently and if you think
that they are going away
you will be wrong.

ALL NEW LONDON TAXIS WILL NEED TO BE ZERO
EMISSION CAPABLE FROM 2018
M
ayor Boris Johnson announced plans that will require all new taxis
presented for licensing in the capital to be zero emission capable from
1 January 2018, with the expectation that they will automatically operate
in zero emission mode while in areas where the capital’s air quality is at its
worst - such as parts of central London. At TfL’s ‘New Taxis for London’
event, held at Potters Field by City Hall on 16th January 2014, the Mayor
talked about the plan as members of the media and taxi trade organisations
got the opportunity to see some of the taxis in development. These will
will meet the requirement, with the Metrocab probably being the nearest to
ready. The news follows a pledge the Mayor made last year to introduce an
Ultra Low Emission Zone in central London by 2020. Since then TfL has
been exploring ways to introduce the scheme in 2020 and have focused on
the development of options. The plan to introduce a requirement for all new
taxis presented for licensing in the capital to be zero emission capable from
2018 will be subject to a full public consultation later this year. The Mayor
will set out his plans and will urge the public, the taxi trade, taxi vehicle
manufacturers and any other interested parties to submit their views.
FINANCIAL OPTIONS FOR
TAXI OWNERS
To assist taxi owners and drivers and
encourage the early adoption of the
new greener vehicles before the 2018
deadline, the Mayor and TfL are now
exploring a number of supporting
measures with the Office of Low
Emission Vehicles (OLEV) and are in
discussion with the Green Investment
Bank around financial options to help
the transition to zero emission capable
taxis. Probably the most frequent
question asked by drivers, owners
and trade press journalists was that of the costs to buy the taxis and all the
manufacturers are saying the pricing will be “competitive” but no-one has
given a firm price as yet.
Boris Johnson said: “The London taxi is iconic in so many ways - not
least in terms of its eye-catching looks and the way it is piloted by wily
experts who know the capital like the back of their hand. To date its one
Achilles heel, particularly of older models, has been the pollution generated
by chugging diesel engines. As part of my mission to improve our air
quality and drive innovation, I’m making a firm pledge to Londoners that
from 2018 all taxis presented for licensing should be zero emission capable.
The cleaner, greener vehicles I’ve seen today are proof that the evolution of
the great London cab is well and truly underway.”
The three vehicles on display were a prototype taxi from Karsan, the new
Metrocab and the hydrogen taxi from LTI. News of the Metrocab has been
coming through over the early part of January and later in the afternoon
following the press event, taxi drivers and other members of the public had
the opportunity to see the vehicles themselves.
Garrett Emmerson, TfL Surface Transport Chief Operating Officer, said:
“We will continue to work closely with taxi manufacturers to get ‘New
Taxis for London’ carrying passengers on the streets of the capital as
soon as possible. The manufacturers at this event today are clearly well
advanced in delivering the next generation of green taxi. We believe these
vehicles will be available well in advance of the challenging deadline set
today by the Mayor. We are also working with the wider industry and the
Green Investment Bank to provide assistance to cab drivers who want to be
among the first to get behind the wheel of these cutting edge vehicles that
will significantly contribute to improving air quality in the capital as well
as delivering benefits to cabbies themselves, in terms of reduced running
costs.”
TfL is continuing to work with and support all the manufacturers’ to assist
them in meeting London’s taxi vehicle requirements, including wheelchair
and other accessibility requirements. Through Source London the capital
already has one of the most developed public charging networks in the
world with almost 1,400 charge points. The scheme will be managed by
IER from the summer and they have ambitious plans to increase the number
of charge points across the capital to 6,000 by 2018, with targeted services
for taxi drivers. The new zero emission capable taxis being developed
include both plug-in full series hybrid vehicles and full electric models.
These vehicles will have the ability to operate in passenger service without
emitting harmful pollutants.
Although there was not a green option to see from either Nissan or
Mercedes, both manufacturers are also bringing new taxis to market. Steve
Bridge, Managing Director Vans - Mercedes-Benz UK Ltd, said: “MercedesBenz, an existing established long-term black cab provider, is currently
developing the next platform of Vito taxis. These new vehicles, specifically
designed to include zero emission capable concepts, will augment our
market leading excellence in engineering, safety, comfort and efficiency for
the taxi market.” Commenting for Nissan was Jim Wright, Nissan Managing
Director, who said: “Nissan supports the Mayor’s initiatives to improve air
quality in the capital. We are committed to delivering a 100 per cent electric
taxi to the UK in 2015, following the launch of our petrol NV200 Taxi for
London later this year. Our zero emission electric taxi will be based on the
proven technology of the market leading Nissan LEAF, which has reached
almost 100 thousand sales worldwide.”

METROCAB
Metrocab Chairman, Sir Charles Masefield said: “The Metrocab is designed
as a next-generation London taxi and represents a revolution in the market
as the first electric-powered cab to meet the duty cycle of a London taxi,
where cabbies typically drive many miles from outside the city. Ready
now, our range extended drivetrain technology offers the solution London
and other world-class cities are looking for. We are confident Metrocab
will make a real impact in the market and provide a better service to
cities, drivers and passengers alike.” The Metrocab is a range extended
vehicle, which is capable of zero emission operation. With a top speed of
Page 13
80mph (Restricted) and regenerative braking, it meets the turning circle
requirement. The litre petrol range-extender engine coupled to generator
unit is fuel efficient and meets Euro 5 emission standards.
METROCAB PARTNERS WITH COMCAB TO RECRUIT
DRIVERS AND LAUNCH IN-MARKET TRIALS AT BORIS
JOHNSON ZERO EMISSIONS TAXI EVENT
Metrocab, together with ComCab, is inviting drivers to register for
real-world trials in the new zero-emissions capable taxi. Many cabbies
registered their interest at the City Hall event. Registration for the trial can
also be completed at www.newmetrocab.com/trial
Metrocab Chairman, Sir Charles Masefield, said: “Today’s presentation by
Mayor Boris Johnson of the zero-emissions models under development for
London is a great opportunity for Metrocab to recruit drivers for commercial
trials. The all-new Metrocab is ready now and we are keen to get our cabs
on the streets of London this year for real-world trials by drivers who will
experience for themselves the cost savings, environmental benefits, easy
ownership and maintenance, and enhanced passenger experience offered
by our revolutionary new taxi. The new Metrocab looks very much at home
on the streets in today’s test-rides – like a true next generation London
taxi.”
Also showcased by Frazer-Nash Energy Systems at City Hall was
a revolutionary new Solar Charging Station model demonstrating the
company’s Concentrated PhotoVoltaic Technology that converts light
energy into electrical energy for charging the Metrocab lithium-ion
polymer battery pack. The company is testing a full size system at its
Surrey headquarters for re-charging its Range Extended Electric taxi and
intends to roll-out the charging stations in London and other key cities
around the world.

LONDON TAXIDRIVERS’ FUND FOR
UNDERPRIVILEGED CHILDREN
T
HON. CHAIR REPORT 2012/2013
he London Taxidrivers’ Fund for
Underprivileged Children celebrated 85
glorious years of helping disadvantaged children
in 2013. This fund was started by a handful of
drivers in the Leicester Square Shelter, now in
Russell Square, who decided to give something
back and take a few underprivileged children from
the Norwood Orphanage to London Zoo. From
this small beginning the charity grew to what it is
today and our main objective is still the same. We
are now a charity comprising of 13 trustees who
are licensed London Taxi drivers and our time
and expertise is given freely, keeping overheads
down and ensuring that each child we help gets
approximately 99p out of every pound we receive
in donations.
In December 2012 I had the great honour
to attend, with my husband Gerald, the
Worshipful Company of Tin Plate Workers (alias
Wireworkers) Christmas Dinner and I thank them
for being both past and present great supporters
of our Fund. Also in December the trustees and
disabled children from the Bridge School were
invited once again to attend Clarence House to
help our Patron, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall,
decorate the Christmas tree in the downstairs
apartments. HRH has such a rapport with
disabled children and a great time was had by
all. On 20th January 2013 our 85th anniversary
celebrations really began, with our Mad Hatters
Tea Party being held at the Grosvenor House (a
JW Marriott Hotel) and in spite of arctic weather
conditions, the party was a brilliant success. The
children had such a wonderful time and I must
thank all those involved, too numerous to name,
who made it such a special day.
The Southend outing this year was full of fun
and laughter. The taxis were covered in balloons
and all sorts of decorations, but driver Steve
Pulham and his helper Kay Molyneaux went one
step further and made an excellent wooden 85th
birthday cake for the top of their taxi and won
first prize for their efforts. Thank you and well
done to everyone who participated on the day.
My husband Gerald and I had the privilege and
honour to be invited to Buckingham Palace as
part of Her Majesty’s Jubilee Celebrations. The
sun was shining, the Royal Family were all in
attendance and as a taxi driver, I felt very humble
and appreciative to be part of this fantastic day.
In August we took children to see Matilda the
Musical at the Cambridge Theatre and we thank
the Royal Shakespeare Company for inviting
us. The show was funny, poignant and just
plain amazing and we thank all those involved
in the day for giving the children a fantastic and
unforgettable afternoon. In September the team
behind the famous English farce ‘Run for your
Wife’ hosted a Gala screening for the London
Taxidrivers’ Fund for Underprivileged Children
at the Stratford Theatre. The cast and the writer
Ray Cooney made it such a special night and I
cannot remember laughing so much at a film for
a long time. My thanks go to all involved, with
a special thank you going to Ray Cooney for
donating a large cheque to us.
Also in September, a few committee members
and their wives joined me at the Pearly Harvest
Festival, which started at the Guildhall and ended
with a service being held at the St. Mary-le-Bow
(Bow Bells) Church. This is such a traditional
day for London and we are grateful to the Pearlies
for giving us such great support every year. In
October we held ‘The Rank of Angels’ interfaith
service at St. Paul’s Cathedral to celebrate our
85th anniversary. During the day we were granted
the use of St. Paul’s Courtyard to promote the
charity and to raise funds, which attracted many
people. In the evening there was a Concert by the
London Charity Orchestra, conducted by William
Carslake, including the new London Children’s
Choir and the Pembroke Academy of Music,
conducted by Ronald Corp. To say thank you to
all those involved does not seem enough. The
day was wonderful and the evening serene and
magical and we thank you most sincerely.
I have had three hard working, humbling and
glorious years as Honorary Chair and it is now
time to pass the mantle on. I look forward to
working alongside and giving my total support to
Simeos Yiannikaris, who will take on the position
of Hon. Chair with as much gusto as all of us who
have enjoyed the privilege before.
Thank you to those of you too numerous to
name, for the help and support you give the
London Taxidrivers’ Fund for Underprivileged
Children. I must also thank the Trustees, their
wives and partners for their support; they are the
best team ever. I also thank the drivers and their
partners, as without you there would be no Fund.
Last, but not least, thank you to my husband
Gerald for his total support.
Susan Angel
(Hon. Chair)
HON. TREASURER’S REPORT FOR
YEAR-END 31 OCTOBER 2013
ven though the economy seems to be picking
up, many charities are suffering, with The
London Taxidrivers’ Fund for Underprivileged
Children being no exception. However, as a
result of the prudent safeguards of the last few
years, the Fund has maintained strong reserves
to enable continued support for the many
disadvantaged children of Greater London.
General administration expenses add up to just
over ½ % of generated income, allowing nearly
every penny of income being spent on improving
the quality of life for those in need.
Over £4500 of grants were made during the year,
including supporting the children of taxi drivers
who have been unable to work; The Grosvenor
House children’s party expenses were greater than
the previous year as transport costs increased due
to the really atrocious weather; The cost of the
annual outing to Southend-on-Sea was virtually
the same as the last year, although a one-off item
of china mugs to celebrate our 85th Anniversary
did increase the total. However, thanks to the
generosity of its many benefactors, the Fund was
able to recover much of these outlays, and has
been able to maintain its high profile within the
London licensed taxi trade, giving hundreds of
disadvantaged children many great memories of
the year’s events.

MICRO LIGHT
FLYING DAY
n 27th September 2013, The
London Taxi Benevolent
Association for War Disabled invited
around twenty members of the armed
forces who are currently at Headley
Court rehabilitation centre to a day
of Micro light flying at Damyns Hall
Aerodrome, near Upminster Essex.
This event had been organised by
committee member Gary Belsey.
The members of the forces arrived and after registration, their instructions
of what to do in the plane were given and they were eager to participate
in the flying. It was great to see the guests enjoying themselves and there
was a continuous queue all morning. At midday it was time for lunch,
which gave the pilots a rest and a chance to cool the engines down on the
micro lights. After lunch it was back into the planes; the flight took guests
over parts of Essex across the Thames into Kent and over the Dartford
crossing. All to soon it was time for the guys and girls to leave and make
their way back to Headley Court, all saying what a very enjoyable day
and would love to do it again. The Chairman and committee would like
to thank all the staff at Damyns Hall for all their work on the day.
