breezes begin cooling everything in the early evening.
After-hours and weekend
activities always beckon. And
winter weather seldom calls
for more than a sweater or
jacket.

Volusia County a vacation paradise where visitors return to live, work and play
Where you live does make a
difference! Whether you prefer
the fast lane or the slow lane,
if you are headed to Volusia
County, Florida, you are on
the right road. It’s a place of
incredible diversity, environmental splendor and creature
comforts that will make you
happy to call Volusia County
home.
From the gentle manatees
floating through the sparkling,
clear springs of west Volusia
County to the thunder of
NASCAR competitors chasing
the checkered flag in Daytona
Beach, Volusia County has it
all. There are poolside tiki
bars, club entertainment and
concerts, Broadway shows
and more. Many of the area’s
restaurants are award-winning.
There are downtown street
concerts and festivals. Whether
you are coming from a
cosmopolitan city or the
wide-open countryside, you
are sure to feel at home in
Volusia County.
Education in a class by itself
Many things contribute to the
dynamic quality of life here.
Education is a shining star.
Volusia County has excellent
public and private schools
and an extraordinary number
of colleges and universities for
a community its size. Among
them are the world’s leading
aviation and aerospace
institution of higher learning,
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University, based in Daytona
Beach, and Stetson University
founded in 1883 in DeLand.
Just what the doctor ordered
Medical resources are exceptional
in Volusia County. The first
robotic surgery in the United
States was done at Halifax
Medical Center in Daytona
Beach. There are hospitals in
every quadrant of the county,
each staffed by talented
medical, surgical and support
professionals. Two health care
systems in Volusia County
have opened state-of-the-art
facilities within the past two
years in Daytona Beach — the
France Tower at Halifax
Health Medical Center and
Florida Hospital Memorial
Medical Center. In addition,
there are numerous impressive
clinics, outpatient facilities and
surgery centers, and a growing roster of impressive highly
skilled doctors and nurses.
In fact, local doctor and
community leader Frank
Farmer is Florida’s Surgeon
General and Secretary of the
Florida Department of Health.
Be it ever so humble
When it comes to housing,
Volusia County has a castle
for everyone...quaint city
neighborhoods near downtown areas…historic
residential districts...rural
homes...beachside homes…
oceanfront and riverfront
condominiums...exclusive
gated communities...luxury
apartments. Many residential
areas are close to schools,
parks and popular shopping
areas. Home purchase and
home building prices are
moderate in comparison to
the rest of the nation.
17
Sunny and mild
Volusia County’s mild weather
is truly enviable. With an
average summer temperature
of 81 degrees and plenty of
sunshine year-round, Volusia
County is a delightful place to
live. Outdoor activities and
sports can be enjoyed all
year. Of course, Volusia’s
wide, sandy beaches are
popular with residents and
visitors and are as pleasant
for a stroll or a run as they
are for sunbathing or surfing.
Whether you are pursuing big
mouth bass in west Volusia
County or looking for a
challenge while deep sea
fishing, Volusia is an angler’s
dream. When it comes to
golf, you can tee off at a
different course every day for
a month. Among Volusia’s
premier links are the two
signature courses of LPGA
International, in the shadow
of the world headquarters of
the Ladies Professional Golf
Association in Daytona
Beach. Tennis players are
equally at home in Volusia
County with great facilities
throughout the area including
the USTA Florida Tennis Center
in Daytona Beach.
Beach, beach, beach
Volusia County has nearly 50
miles of magnificent beaches.
Stretching from Ormond
Beach to Ponce Inlet, with
more beaches in the New
Smyrna Beach area, you’ll
have plenty of room to play
or just kick back and watch
the tide roll in and out.
Volusia’s lifeguard corps is
world famous. The Beach
Patrol is one of the few
agencies in the world where
the staff holds three certifications
– professional lifeguards,
emergency medical technicians
(EMTs) and law enforcement
officers. Convenient concessions
make it a breeze to grab a
bite to eat, pick up some
sunscreen, or rent a colorful
umbrella and chair. You can
drive on many parts of the
beach, and there are designated traffic-free areas that
are reserved for pedestrian
beachgoers. Volusia’s beaches
also have a national reputation for excellence in plant
and animal conservation. So
whether you are rollin’ or
strollin’, there is always
plenty to see and do at the
beach.
On the waterfront
Beyond the magnificent
beaches, the Intracoastal
Waterway in east Volusia
County and the St. Johns
River in west Volusia County
are alive with activity and
breathtaking scenery. There
are marinas, yacht clubs, fish
camps, swimmin’ holes and
more. River tours offer a
bird’s eye-view of spectacular
homes and put you in close
proximity to exotic wildlife
such as ospreys, manatees,
alligators and eagles.
Riverfront restaurants offer
traditional Florida fare such
as key lime pie, fried gator,

home, you just found it.

blue crab, lobster and other
fresh seafood. Lakes offer
great fishing, pontoon boats,
kayaking and stunning natural
beauty.
Fine arts
Like America and Florida,
Volusia County is an ethnic
melting pot where cultural
diversity is embraced. Cultural
arts and history are important
elements of the community’s
fabric, and there is a wide
variety of arts, culture and
historical offerings. The
Museum of Arts and Sciences
in Daytona Beach is a fascinating complex with an
exceptional collection of
Cuban art, interactive teaching
centers and a planetarium.
Other museums include
historic DeBary Hall, the
Pioneer Settlement for the
Creative Arts, the Ormond
Museum and Art Gallery, the
Museum of Florida Art and
many more. The Ocean Center
— the county’s meeting, convention and event complex —
features a stunning collection of
permanent art ranging from a
spectacularly colorful glass
sculpture that refracts the sun
shining through the spacious
atrium to playful water sport
paintings to Florida wildlife. The
Ocean Center also hosts rotating
art exhibits in its lobby with a
focus on Volusia’s ecological,
cultural, historical and outdoor
(ECHO) resources. The family-
friendly interactive Marine
Science Center is a stone’s
throw from the historic Ponce
de Leon Inlet Lighthouse and
Museum. The Atlantic Center
for the Arts is a renowned
complex for artists-in-residence
in New Smyrna Beach dedicated
to promoting excellence
through collaboration among
some of the world’s most distinguished contemporary
artists. The arts are alive and
well outdoors, too. Outdoor
events such as the Halifax Art
Festival, the Images Art
Festival, the Wild Game Feast,
and the DeLand Fall Festival
of the Arts draw visitors from
far and wide.
To do list
There is no shortage of things
to see and do in Volusia
County. In addition to the
beach, water sports, fishing,
science and art museums, golf
and tennis, there is shopping
in historic downtown districts,
state-of-the-art destination
shopping areas, malls,
boutiques and more. There
are unique restaurants
throughout the area. Farmers
markets are very popular. Live
theater performances fill the
calendar every year in a
variety of performing arts
centers and smaller venues.
And concerts are particularly
popular and include everything from emerging bands
to the London Symphony
Orchestra, which has made
dozens of appearances in
Daytona Beach and throughout Volusia County and has
attracted many other world
class performers to the area.
And of course, famed Daytona
International Speedway hosts
an array of events including
NASCAR and Grand Am races,
motorcycle races, exhibitions,
go kart races and even a
popular half-marathon that
begins and ends at the track.

We put a premium on education in Volusia County
Volusia County has exceptional
educational resources.
Whether it be at elementary
and secondary schools or
colleges and universities,
outstanding work is being
done by educators at all levels,
often resulting in state and
national recognition.
“We are fortunate to have
exceptional educational
resources throughout Volusia
County,” said Volusia County
Schools Superintendent
Dr. Margaret Smith, who
once served as Pennsylvania’s
Secretary of Education.
“At every level, dedicated
educators, administrators and
support staff combine proven
techniques with creativity and
innovation to provide students
with a rich educational
experience.”
Volusia County Schools
Volusia’s public school system
serves more than 61,000
students, making it the 13th
largest school system in
Florida. There are 81 schools
in the system including 45
elementary schools, 12 middle
schools, nine high schools,
two combination schools (K-8
and 6-12), four alternative
education schools, and nine
charter schools. Volusia
County schools are staffed
with more than 4,500 teachers,
all of whom are state certified
and 43 percent of whom have
a master’s degree or higher.
Accredited…and honored
The district is accredited by
the Southern Association of
Colleges and Schools (SACS).
In fact, the Volusia County
School District was the first
school district in Florida and
the third in the nation to
receive accreditation from
SACS, a distinction that
recognizes and celebrates
educational excellence in
Volusia County. Add to this
Florida’s 2010 Superintendent
of the Year honors bestowed
upon Dr. Smith, and it is clear
the district is committed to
excellence at every level.
Exceptional teachers
Many teachers have brought
honor to the classroom and
the Volusia school district.
Among them are Pine Ridge
High School teacher Erin
Johnson, recognized as
22
Florida’s Outstanding
Agricultural Education
Teacher; and Cathy Colwell, a
Mainland High School teacher
who, along with her students,
has received a Meritorious
Achievement Award from the
National Medal of Technology
program 10 years in a row.
Deltona High School teacher
Starr Woods has been honored
with a Governor’s Excellence
in Education Award, recognizing exceptional AfricanAmerican teachers. Heritage
Middle School teacher Lisa
Bynum was named Florida’s
Agriscience Teacher of the
Year, and New Smyrna Beach
High School teacher Kathleen
Weaver was named Florida’s
Outstanding Young Member
by the Florida Association of
Agricultural Teachers.
Students raise the bar
Students also have put the
Volusia County school system
on center stage. The 2010 Dell
Scholar Program recognized
four Volusia County students.
The graduation rate for
Volusia County high school
seniors exceeds that of the
state and the nation. Nearly
1,300 students are enrolled in
the International Baccalaureate Program or pre-International Baccalaureate program.
More than half of high school
seniors tested with an average
SAT score of 1,475 or higher.
Volusia County graduates
garnered more than $28 million
in scholarships in 2010.
Academies and the
workforce
Volusia County Schools is
a national leader in the
development of its 34 career
academies and is recognized
by the Ford Fund as a Next
Generation Learning
Community. Academies
include those focusing on
building and construction,
information technology, digital
media and marketing, health
services, robotics, finance,
and many other areas of
study. Each gives students an
opportunity to learn more
about a particular field as
they move closer to career
decisions.
Backed by business
The business community
provides substantial support
for Volusia County Schools
through its nonprofit FUTURES
Foundation. It was established
in 1985 to increase business/
community involvement in
public schools and to provide
programs and activities
beyond the financial
capabilities of the school
district. The FUTURES
Foundation provides assistance
to all public schools in
Volusia County. Members
work to encourage and
increase business and civic
involvement in the school system. They motivate,
encourage and fund creative
and innovative educational
programs, and assist students
in preparing for the workforce
of tomorrow. FUTURES also
plays an instrumental role in
providing recognition of outstanding achievements by students, teachers and
support staff. The organization
assists in the recruitment of
the highest quality teachers
and administrators and works
to raise the level of public
understanding and support
through improved communication and distribution of
information, in addition to its
vital partnership with the business community.
“Another way business backs
Volusia County Schools is the
Career Connection Consortium,
a partnership with area
business and industry, the
Center for Business Excellence,
and local colleges and
universities,” said Brad Giles,
president of Giles Electric and
chair of the cadre. “We advise
and evaluate the career and
technical education programs
and the many career
academies offered through
our secondary schools.”
Higher education
Volusia County is particularly
fortunate to have several
outstanding colleges and
universities. “For a community
our size, higher education is
exceptionally well represented
here with a wide range of
private and public colleges
and universities,” said Dr.
Wendy B. Libby, president of
Stetson University. Among
them are some familiar names
among the nation’s respected
colleges and universities.
Stetson University
Since 1883, Stetson University’s
vision has remained constant
— engaging students with
rigorous academics and a
personalized education that
instills civic values for life.
Stetson dares its students to
pursue not just success, but
significance. An independent,
accredited, private university,
Stetson was awarded a chapter
of the prestigious Phi Beta
Kappa honorary society in
1982. The university consistently performs well in
national rankings, including
being named by U.S. News &
World Report as third among
the South’s top regional
universities and fourth on the
Great Schools, Great Prices list
for 2012. Serving 3,900 students, the College of Arts and
Sciences, School of
Business Administration and
School of Music are part of
the historic campus in
DeLand. The College of Law
is in Gulfport/St. Petersburg,
Florida. The university also
has two satellite centers — the
Tampa Law Center and the
Stetson University Center at
Celebration near Orlando.
Bethune-Cookman
University
Founded in 1904 by Dr. Mary
McLeod Bethune, BethuneCookman University enjoys a
legacy of faith, scholarship
and service through its
relationship with the United
Methodist Church. It is
committed to academic
excellence and civic engagement. The university offers
baccalaureate degrees in more
than 30 majors through seven
academic schools and maintains intercollegiate
athletic programs and
instrumental and choral
groups that have achieved
national recognition. The
school achieved university status in 2007 with the launch of
a master’s degree program in
transformative leadership and
since has launched a graduate
program in
integrated environmental
science. It is one of three
private historically black
colleges in Florida. The institution boasts a diverse and international faculty and student
body of more than 3,600. It is
ranked by U.S. News & World
Report as 34th among the
nation’s Best Black Colleges
and is also ranked among
Best Regional Colleges in
the South.
Embry-Riddle
Aeronautical University
Embry-Riddle Aeronautical
University is the world’s
leading aviation and
aerospace university. Founded
22 years after the Wright
Brothers’ first flight, EmbryRiddle has achieved
an enviable record in
aviation and aerospace. The
curriculum also covers
business, engineering and
research. The university
conducts extensive research in
the areas of aviation,
aerospace and “green”
technologies.
Residential campuses in
Daytona Beach and Prescott,
Arizona, provide education in
a traditional setting, while
Embry-Riddle Worldwide
provides instruction at more
than 150 locations in the
United States, Europe,
Canada, the Middle East and
Asia and through online
courses. The university is
23
ranked first in undergraduate
aerospace engineering
education by U.S. News &
World Report, an honor it
has been awarded for the past
12 years.
Daytona State College
Daytona State College is
among the region’s largest
providers of higher education
and workforce training. With
Volusia County campuses in
Daytona Beach, DeLand,
Deltona and New Smyrna
Beach-Edgewater, the college
serves more than 36,000
students annually and offers
more than 100 programs,
including one-year certificates;
two-year associate degrees;
nine baccalaureate degrees in
business, education and
engineering technology; and
a wide variety of continuing
education offerings for business
and industry. Approximately
75 percent of the college’s
associate of arts graduates
transfer to universities.
Daytona State College is
ranked 37th in the nation
among four-year institutions in
awarding associate degrees.
The college continues to partner
with neighboring higher
education institutions to
support the region’s economic
development and workforce
training needs. Daytona State’s
Advanced Technology College
houses its engineering
technology, computer science
24
and vocational programs,
while its recently acquired
News-Journal Center in
downtown Daytona Beach is
home to the college’s music
production and performing
arts programs. Other
resources include the Mori
Hosseini College of Hospitality
Management; the acclaimed
Southeast Museum of Photography; and the Florida State
University Daytona Beach
Regional Medical School
Campus, a community-based
medical school that provides
third- and fourth-year clinical
training through affiliations
with local physicians, ambulatory
care facilities and hospitals.
University of Central Florida
While the University of
Central Florida’s main campus
is in neighboring Orlando,
Volusia and Flagler County
residents can complete UCF
degree programs at the
university’s Daytona Beach
campus. UCF Daytona Beach
occupies more than 36,000
square feet in two joint use
buildings at the northeast side
of the Daytona State College
campus. Nearly 1,000 students
are enrolled in classes,
majoring in 17 undergraduate
programs and three graduate
programs. The undergraduate
majors include psychology,
business administration,
photography and nursing.
The University of Central
Florida and Daytona State
College have a long history of
collaboration though the 2 + 2
statewide articulation program
that has benefited students
and the area for more than 30
years. Undergraduate majors
at UCF Daytona Beach
include nursing, criminal
justice, early childhood
development, elementary
education, exceptional student
education, health services
administration, interdisciplinary
studies, interpersonal/organizational communication, legal
studies, political science,
social sciences, sociology,
technical education and
industry training. UCF Daytona
Beach also offers a unique
opportunity for those with
associate in science degrees to
enhance their skills with the
bachelor of applied science
program, which allows
students to select from one of
six areas of concentration.
UCF Daytona Beach has two
programs that are unique to
this campus — master of arts
in clinical psychology and
bachelor of science in
photography.
And there’s more…
There are many other
educational resources in
Volusia County. For example,
Father Lopez Catholic High
School offers a private-school
alternative. There are many
private schools covering prekindergarten through eighth
grade, some of which have
religious affiliations. Keiser
University, Nova Southeastern
University, Phoenix University
and others add to the alternatives for higher education in
Volusia County. Wyotech,
Installers Institute, International Academy and others
offer training in specific areas
such as automotive and
motorcycle repair, car stereo
installation and cosmetology.
And Palmer College of Chiropractic, the first and largest
chiropractic college in the
world, has a growing campus
in Volusia County.
With these educational
resources, the enthusiastic
support of the business
community and a growing
contingent of professionals
engaged in economic
development, education has
a place of honor in Volusia
County. The bottom line is
that the opportunities for
education, continuing
education and trade-specific
