HealthcareSolutionsarepleasedtoannounceanewopportunityontheCAMTechInnovation
Platform(CIP)-theFirstMileDiscoveryChallenge-aninitiativetocrowdsourcecritical
challengestoinformthedevelopmentofnewsolutionstoimprovethereach,efficacy,and
efficiencyoffrontlinehealthcareworkersatthefirstmileofcareinlow-andmiddle-income
countries(LMICs).
TheFirstMileDiscoveryChallengewascreatedtoidentifyunmetclinicalneedsinprimarycare
settingsinLMICs,withpriorityonneedsandinnovationsrelatedtomaternalandchildhealth,
cardiovascularscreening/healthandsafesurgery.
Upto10awardsof$1,000USDwillbegivenforthebestchallenges.Below,pleasefindtheexpected

ProgramDetails
Theprogramfocuswillbeonprimarycaresettingsinlow-andmiddle-incomecountries(LMICs),
withpriorityonneedsandinnovationsrelatedtomaternalandchildhealth,cardiovascular
screening/healthandsafesurgery.RegionsofparticularinterestwillbeIndiaandSouthAsia,Africa
andSoutheastAsia,butsubmissionsmayalsocomefromothergeographies.
Clinicalchallengesmayincludeissuesrelatedto:
• Distancebetweenpatientsandproviders(e.g.accessibility/proximity,information
asymmetry)
• Congestedcaresettingsservingheterogeneouspatientpopulations(e.g.seekingurgentcare
vs.routinefollow-upvisits)
• Availabilityoftimely,cost-effectiveandappropriateclinicalcareforspecificdiseaseor
conditions
• Accessibilityofprimaryprevention,harmreduction,ordiseasescreening/diagnostic
services
• Convenienceofcomprehensivecarebundledasbroader,recurring“wellness”visits
• Patient-managedcareandlong-termtreatmentadherence
• Coordinatedcare,referralnetworksandtrackingpatientsthroughroutinefollow-up
• Non-medicaldeterminantsofhealth(e.g.builtenvironment,nutrition,safety,poverty,social

SubmissionFormat
ChallengesshouldbesubmittedthroughtheCIPandshouldaddressrecurrentburdensor
inadequatelyaddressedbarrierstocarewithintheprimaryclinicalcaredomainsof:

2. Cardiaccare
3. Safesurgery
Foreachchallenge,applicantswillberequiredtosubmitthefollowing:

Competitivesubmissionswilldescribeaspecific“challengepathway”includingclinicalsetting,
compellingdescriptionofthechallenge,keyactorsinvolved,andtheimpactonpatientorcommunity
outcomes.Compellingsubmissionswilldescribehowtheproblemiscurrentlydealtwithandwhy
thecurrentsolutionremainsinadequate.
EvaluationProcess
SubmissionstotheDiscoveryChallengewillbeevaluatedfortheimpacton,orvalueto:
1. Clinicalimpact/Value(e.g.clinicaloutcomesorqualityofcaremeasures)
2. Thebroaderpublichealthofacommunity(e.g.aggregatewell-being,morbidityormortality
measures).
ThevotingandevaluationprocesswillbecompletedbytwodifferentgroupsontheCIP.The
CAMTechonlinecommunitywillreviewthechallengessubmittedbyvoting-uptohelpnarrowdown
themostpressingchallengesinthefieldofprimarycare.
CAMTechwillalsoinvitecliniciansfromitsexternalTechnologyReviewCommittee(TRC)to
evaluateandcuratethechallenges.Judgingcriteriawillincludethefollowingonaslidingscale:
