Prince Edward Island
Written by Laura Byrne Paquet
With just 145,000 residents, Prince Edward Island (PEI) is Canada’s smallest province. Locals ask each other “Who’s
your father?” to figure out whether their families have crossed paths before — which they probably have. But while this
East Coast island is drenched in rural charm, there’s much more to it than that. For one thing, until recently, it had one of
Canada’s highest immigration rates, and those newcomers have added fresh flavours to an already vibrant culinary scene.
Lobsters, oysters, potatoes and apples
don’t come much fresher than you can
enjoy them in season on PEI. Driving quiet
country roads fringed by tiny harbours and
farmers’ fields, it’s only a matter of time
before you find yourself behind a pickup
stacked with crates of seafood or a tractor
trailing clots of the province’s famous red
soil. Fortunately, it’s easy to taste the
island’s riches. In the province’s capital,
Charlottetown, start your day with a huge
plate of eggs Benedict or French toast at
Red Water Rustic Grille, in the Holman
Grand Hotel.
To fuel up after a busy morning of
exploring the city, you can’t beat Pendergast
Bakery, housed in the Youngfolk & The
Kettle Black café. Chef Robert Pendergast’s
tasty dishes include meat pies and
sandwiches made with organic breads and
vegan specialties. Don’t miss the red bean
and lentil soup if it’s on that day’s menu.
Catching a play or concert at the
Confederation Centre of the Arts? Leave
time for a pre-show dinner at Mavor’s.
The arts center’s popular restaurant —
which you don’t need a theatre ticket to
visit — caters to diners of all tastes and
budgets. Splurge on a three-course table
d’hôte with an accompanying flight of wines,
or opt for simpler fare like fish and chips.
Beyond Charlottetown, other great
meals await. For a sensational bowl of
clam-studded seafood chowder, drop into
the unprepossessing Sheltered Harbour
Café on the eastern side of the island.
You can also get home-style dishes like
liver and onions, as well as lighter fare like
a cranberry, orange and almond salad.
For an iconic island experience,
follow your nose, roadside signs or an
islander’s recommendation to one of the
countless lobster suppers that cater to
visitors and tourists throughout the island
all summer. Along with whole lobsters
boiled in salt water and served with butter,
the menu will likely include non-lobster
entrees as well as a groaning table of
breads, salads and desserts.
If all of this bounty has you itching
to mess around in a kitchen, sign up for
a workshop at Annie’s Table Culinary
Studio. Housed in a former church, this
friendly school offers classes in everything
from gluten-free cooking to Thai cuisine,
held from late spring through early fall.
Nicaraguan-born chef Norman Zeledon’s
enthusiasm for local ingredients — like
potatoes raised by a Filipino-Canadian
farmer in the fields next door — can’t
help but rub off on you. And the recipes
you bring home will be a little taste of the
island you can savour long after you leave.

An hour away, you’ll find the town
of Negril. This small resort area is
considered one of the most laid-back
places in Jamaica — and for good
reason. The tourism industry didn’t
hit Negril until the 1960s, when the
first road to Montego Bay was built.
Today, luxury resorts dot the town’s
famed Seven Mile Beach, with
spectacular snorkelling, swimming
and diving only a short walk away.
t
The Ocho Rios–Runaway Bay region
is packed with history, culture and
eco-adventure. Hiking waterfall trails
(visit Dunn’s River Falls) is practically
a national pastime here. And, as the
birthplace of reggae legend Bob Marley,
this area is also the pulse of the Jamaica’s
spiritual heart. Tour the region Marley
once called home and ascend the
stairways to Zion — the location of
Marley’s mausoleum and one of the
most sacred spots on the island.
In Montego Bay, visitors get an authentic
taste of Jamaican life. Visit Market
Street on Saturday and explore the
bustling outdoor market filled with
exotic goods and foods. Nearby, the Hip
Strip offers unique shops, restaurants
and bars. Or, if it’s history you’re after,
take a tour of the Rose Hall Great
House — a massive plantation home
said to be haunted by its former mistress.

Whatever your definition of relaxation,
you’re sure to find it here in Jamaica.
Beautiful beaches, blue waters, smooth
reggae vibes, laid-back Rasta culture
and fantastic cuisine make up this
incredible island. Here, you can
snorkel on Monday, zipline on
Tuesday and relax in a private
beach cabana all day Wednesday.

Stone
An internationally known chef, best-selling author and TV host, Curtis
Stone is inspired by Mother Nature to keep his delicious recipes simple,
using local, seasonal and organic ingredients. Curtis is the host of
BRAVO’s new show, Top Chef Duels and is a regular guest co-host on The
Chew. He is also a familiar face from shows including The Today Show,
Ellen, Conan, The Talk, The Biggest Loser and Celebrity Apprentice. In the
last year, Curtis launched his eco-driven cookware Curtis Stone Kitchen
Solutions on HSN, and watched his fifth cookbook, What’s For Dinner? hit
the New York Times bestseller list. Curtis recently returned to his culinary
roots by opening his first restaurant, Maude, in Beverly Hills.
Q
What is your favourite
destination
and why?
Miami. I love that city. I love the water,
it’s so great with the beautiful beaches
and it’s great for scuba diving. You
can do so many different things there.
You travel about 20 minutes and you’re
in the swampland. Or you go the other
way and find all these beautiful caves.
I also love the atmosphere. There’s a
very South American feel to it. And
don’t get me started on the food!
Q
Where
haven’t you been that
you would like to go?
My beautiful wife Lindsay is half
Korean so I’m itching to go to Korea
with her and our two-year-old boy Hud;
I’ve never been before. I’ve travelled
through a lot of Asia but never to
Korea. I love their food and I’ve
been introduced to so many of their
incredible traditions through Linds
and her family.
Q
What one item is a must-have
when
you travel?
An ID and credit card and I’m good
to go. I like being a little unequipped.
It’s what you don’t bring with you that’s
important. As soon as you have too
much stuff with you — too many plans
and guidebooks — you spend too
much time with your head in a book.
The most exciting thing about travelling
is the people you meet and getting
the local experience from them. Who
knows better where the best taco
stand is than your taxi driver?
Q
here do you go to relax and
W
“chill out?”
I’d probably have to say Hawaii. I don’t
know if it gets any more relaxing than
these tropical islands. It’s only a fivehour flight from L.A. so I love that I can
be in total paradise following just one
quick flight. One short flight is such a
breeze for this boy born and raised
Down Under!
Q
here do you like to go that’s
W
easily accessible?
When I can grab a day off here and
there, I’m very happy to do simple day
trips in Southern California. I love to
jump in the car with Linds and Hud
and cruise down to Malibu beach, have
lunch overlooking the aqua blue Pacific
Ocean water, play in the sand with Hud,
try to squeeze in a surf if I’m lucky and
finish the day with an incredible sunset.
Q
If you had just one major trip
to plan, what would it be?
A big outback trip in the Northern
Territory, Oz is sitting pretty close to
the top of my bucket list. The Northern
Territory is two and a half times the size
of Texas and has so much to offer both
the international and local traveller. I
don’t like to take my big adventure
vacations lying down so I’d love to trek
through King’s Canyon, check out the
wildlife at Alice Springs National Park
and get amongst the lush, greenery
of Kakadu National Park.
